Dust suppression is an important environmental control in most mining operations. The poorest quality water within a mine site is often used for dust suppression since it provides an effective means of reducing the volume of poor quality water. The ultimate fate of contaminants or salinity associated with water used in dust suppression is important to consider for optimising water management and assessing the environmental impact and life span and maintenance requirements of roads associated with dust suppression.The propensity for remobilisation of contaminants or salts depends on a range of factors such as the application rate, climate, road construction, water chemistry and soil geochemistry. This paper describes a typical study approach which could be used to assess the short- and long-term impacts of mine water application for dust suppression. The steps of the study are: reviewing the environmental setting, estimating water requirements for dust suppression, reviewing source water chemistry, developing a mass balance model and assessing the mobility and fate of contaminants with a geochemical model.This approach identifies which salt species are likely to form and whether they are prone to remobilisation. It is possible to quantitatively assess the risk of exporting contaminants or salt from roads and to refine the dust suppression strategy to minimise the environmental risk. The approach can be applied at mine sites to address regulator concerns, aid decision-making and improve the understanding of short- and long-term environmental risks.CITATION:Gimber, C, 2013. This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points. "In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. "The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. With the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities related to haul truck accidents, this research investigates technologies and intervention strategies for improving worker training using a virtual environment (VE). Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research specifically focuses on training workers in preshift inspections of haul trucks to avoid preventable defects from causing worker injuries and expensive equipment damage. Improved training in these inspections is expected to increase uptime. The VE developed to train workers for preshift inspections consists of three phases: the virtual tour, the virtual inspection and the shift simulation. The virtual tour introduces information necessary to conduct a preshift inspection by guiding the worker around a haul truck, identifying parts to be inspected and explaining defects to look for. The virtual inspection assesses retention as the worker navigates around a haul truck and identifies defects. During the shift simulation, the worker is shown a simulation of the work shift, which animates severe consequences of any overlooked defects to emphasise the importance of preshift inspections. To provide multiple training platforms, desktop and CAVEÖ versions of the training VE were created. Flux Studio was used to model the environment and to produce Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) files for the desktop version. DIVERSE, an application programming interface, was then used to implement a more realistic version of the VE in a CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system. Initial feedback from mining colleagues indicates that the training VE may replace normal classroom training for preshift inspections in the future. As opposed to PowerPoint presentations and instructional videos, the training VE provides better spatial understanding of the location of parts and incorporates interactive features to actively engage drivers in the learning process, which may result in better retention. Initial feedback also indicates that minor improvements can be made to the virtual tour and virtual inspection phases.

The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.

Spatial and temporal trends in water chemistry in the acidic (pH ~2.6) Berkeley Pit lake, Butte, Montana, can be explained by a newly developed iron-cycling model. Key elements of this model include: subaqueous oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide minerals by dissolved ferric iron, producing Fe2+ as a by-product; re-oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the epilimnion, assisted by A ferrooxidans; precipitation of secondary ferric minerals (schwertmannite, jarosite) in the epilimnion; and replenishment of the Fe3+ concentration of the hypolimnion by seasonal lake turnover and gravitational settling and re-dissolution of ferric precipitates. Pyrite oxidation rates were approximated by using published rate laws and information on the Fe3+ concentrations (~5 mmol) of the Berkeley Pit as a function of depth. The results indicate that subaqueous pyrite oxidation may be releasing as little as 6 + 106 or as much as 600 + 106 moles of H+ each year to the lake; the large range reflects uncertainty in calculation of the specific surface area of pyrite in the flooded pit. This helps to explain the observation that the pH and metal concentrations of the Berkeley Pit have not improved with time since mine flooding began in 1983. Vertical cycling of ferric iron in the pit lake permits pyrite oxidation to continue in deep water, even in the absence of dissolved oxygen. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary stable-isotope data.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. The disposal of dewatered coalmine tailings and coarse reject within spoil piles is gaining popularity as a means of eliminating separate surface tailings storage facilities or dams. The contrasting characteristics of coalmine spoil, coarse reject and tailings are somewhat complimentary, making the co-disposal of dewatered tailings within spoil piles geotechnically feasible and environmentally attractive. However, the impacts of mixing plant rejects within spoil piles are not well understood; in particular, the effects of water draining from the mixed plant rejects on the moisture content of the surrounding spoil. Changes in moisture content can cause additional collapse and degradation settlements of the spoil pile. A series of laboratory tests has been undertaken on mixtures of dewatered coalmine tailings, coarse reject and spoil. The results of these tests have been incorporated into a spreadsheet-based settlement prediction tool to investigate the effects of incorporating mixed plant rejects on total spoil pile settlements. It is predicted that underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin will have a significant rise in heat problems as mines aim to increase production, depth of extraction and length of longwall panels. At an actual Bowen Basin mine, extended longwall panels greater than 4 km in length are planned to be mined at depths with a virgin rock temperature (VRT) of more than 40¦C. Research has been completed into the reasons for the substantial increase in temperature at the face for underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. An analysis into heat loads produced at the Bowen Basin mine for the development and production phases shows a significant amount of additional cooling will be required to ensure safe working temperatures. All of the major sources of heat, which included both natural and mine induced heating, were considered for the analysis. Maximum heat loads were assessed, together with peak intake surface temperature to determine the maximum cooling capacity required at a Bowen Basin mine. These maximum heat loads were assessed for a specific longwall panel, Longwall A, which extends to over 4.1 km in length and at a maximum depth of over 330 m, resulting in a VRT above 40¦C. The cooling system positional efficiency was analysed, determining that underground cooling via an indirect heat exchanger was preferred to increasing the capacity of the current bulk air cooling (BAC) on the surface. Legislation introduced for Queensland and New South Wales Coal mines provides different levels of prescription regarding specification of mine seals û generally in relation to capacity to withstand overpressure. In Queensland, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation (2001), Section 341 (d) places a further onus on the statutory ventilation officer to æensure all ventilation control devices at the mine are properly constructed and maintainedÆ and that the ventilation officer æmust ensure a ventilation control device mentioned in the regulation à and installed at the mine meets the design criteria statedÆ for the ætype of deviceÆ. Based on the experience of the author, it appears that risk management and life cycle approach to seals has not been adopted to the same extent as for other aspects of operations. Further, because of the number of disciplines and personnel involved that may influence various factors affecting seal integrity, the opportunity for oversight or unclear allocation of responsibility is considerable. While suppliers can provide explosion or design rated seals, this should only be a starting point for application of the product in a coal mine. Application is often considered by mine planning staff (taking into consideration mine environment parameters such as water, control of gas, spontaneous combustion risk, etc) in conjunction with the colliery ventilation officer, and then construction completed by contractors under supervision of operational staff. After construction, seals often are managed by operational personnel with input from the ventilation officer. Input of the geotechnical engineer into pillar design, roadway opening size, ground support specification and most stable seal location is also required. The need for a customised design approach for each seal site is proposed in order to take into account the many and variable factors that may influence a site so that improved seal performance reliability and predictability can be developed. A program of quantitative as well as qualitative monitoring of performance and triggers for rectification or maintenance action is required, and would provide support to the aforementioned proposal. Many mines rely on visual/audible inspection and periodic bag sampling as the primary means of assessment. Other significant factors such as seal material properties, rib degradation, convergence, floor heave, effects of water on both structural integrity of the seal as well as the air tightness of the seal do not generally receive the same level of attention. Based on the above observations, the author has compiled a reference checklist in regard to the above matters, including aspects of and approaches to mine and pillar design, geotechnical modelling and data collection, civil engineering design, site evaluation and practical options available.

Coal mining legislation makes frequent reference to æSafety Management SystemsÆ but there is a chronic shortage of useful guidance material as to how these might be applied to hazardous exposures. Several studies have indicated that for each death that is reported as a result of an industrial æaccidentÆ, there are five deaths that caused by occupational exposures. Because the deaths from occupational exposures do not occur on site and often well after employment has ceased, they are generally unreported. Improved access to mortality data from coroners, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and superannuation service providers (early claims from death and total permanent disability), has given rise to some analysis of death and disability data that provides evidence that there are emerging opportunities to develop and improve safety management systems for hazardous occupational exposures. Issues explored include how safety management systems might be developed in relation to dusts and chemicals and other hazardous exposures to ensure the risk of disorders with long latency periods are reliably assessed and the exposures effectively managed. The current standards and guidelines which refer to safety management systems in general or to management of exposure related hazards are examined. Many standards are based on dose-response studies that provide for an acceptable percentage of workers to suffer adverse health outcomes. An alternative management system might be to apply dose-response relations to health surveillance to identify æat riskÆ individuals and effectively manage health and related safety risk at an early stage.

Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. This paper highlights strategies used at the Barrick operated Kibali Gold Mine (KGM) to improve the drilling accuracy and blasting effectiveness for longhole open stoping. The mine currently uses Solo DL421 for the required stope drilling and has experienced an average deviation of 10 per cent. Strategies are raised to eliminate or at least mitigate the adverse effects of blasthole deviation and the impact of blasting induced effect at the stope faces including the stope crown. The integration of deviation trends in the design would allow the actual blastholes to be established within their required positions to then facilitate a proper energy distribution with the eventual production blasting. The implementation of stope undercutting reduces the hole length from 35 m to 30 m which in return decreases blasthole deviation by 3 per cent. Another strategy adopted to improve the drilling accuracy is to slow down the penetration rate with the use of several operating approaches, including 135 MPa percussion pressure, 65 rev/sec rotation speed and 17 MPa feed pressure. To this penetration rate, a constant k factor is applied to increase the rate when the bedding inclination is less than 45° from the horizontal or when the hole length is under 10 m. This reduces deviation by a further 4 per cent. Where the rock mass is highly jointed it is advised to use the average penetration rate over the entire length of the hole. Furthermore, the paper shows the effect of deviation on the blasting results through a prediction of fragmentation blasting model optimised with reduced deviation and highlights the effect of presplit mining and timing delay on the blasting effectiveness. Although the size pattern increases with deviation, a strategy pertaining to timing delay with blasting would be to align to the work of Grant (1990) where the optimum hole to hole delay is found to be between 7–10 ms/m of spacing, while the optimum delay between adjacent ring varied between 110–160 ms. Stabilisation of crowns and wings will perform with the implementation of presplit blasting.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Long-term water management is typically ignored in mine closure planning. A review of 73 mine closure plans dating from 2007 to 2013 shows that, on average, relinquishment is proposed to be achieved in 11 years. A separate review of 57 mines in actual closure shows that only five have so far achieved relinquishment with an average closure period of 14 years after production cessation. The remaining 91 per cent of sites in closure have an average closure duration to date of 21 years - and still going.A common issue among those sites in closure is water management, with a further common issue being acid and metaliferous drainage (AMD). Of the closure plans that were reviewed only one site had allowance for long-term (>50 years) of water treatment. Of the sites in actual closure 25 per cent have reported that they expect such long-term water treatment, with many acknowledging that in perpetuity treatment is probable.Clearly there is a gap between what is being allowed in closure plans and the reality of closure. There are a number of factors leading to the optimism of the closure plans, including unrealistic assumptions, pressures to reduce closure cost provisions and the technical complexity of many AMD issues.Long-term water management is a reality that needs to be acknowledged and addressed. The mining district of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) in southeastern Brazil contributes to 70 per cent of the Brazilian iron ore production, which reached 370 Mt in 2010. Traditionally, four iron ore types were mined in the QF region:1. soft haematite,2. hard haematite,3. friable ‘itabirite’ (the Brazilian name for metamorphosed banded iron formation), and4. canga (an indurated iron-rich crust).With the exception of the hard haematite, these categories derive from supergene enrichment of the Paleoproterozoic Cauê Itabirite. High current iron ore demand means that the QF high grade supergene ores will be depleted in a few decades. Consequently, several mining projects are being developed to exploit unenriched, fresh itabirite. Among them, the Mineração Usiminas Serra Azul project in northwestern QF is one of the most advanced. Four major itabirite types occur in the QF region:1. siliceous (or standard),2. dolomitic,3. amphibolitic, and4. magnetitic.The dominant type in Serra Azul region is a fresh siliceous itabirite, composed essentially of haematite, martite and quartz that averages 36 per cent Fe (51.5 per cent Fe2O3) and 47 per cent SiO2. The second type, the magnetitic itabirite, consisting of magnetite, martite, gruneritecummingtonite, quartz, dolomite, stilpnomelane, and subordinate haematite, is typically a strongly magnetic greenish banded iron formation with the iron grade varying between 25 and 35 per cent. Chemically, it differs from the siliceous itabirite due to the relatively high CaO, MgO and, consequently, high LOI contents. Together with supergene ores, fresh itabirites have been included in the ore reserves of the Serra Azul project. We anticipate that all the four types of fresh itabirite will be incorporated as ore in the QF region, causing a huge increase on the iron ore resources of the district, and representing enormous environmental and technological challenges for the local iron ore industry.
