The mines and concentrator of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation are located in the northern part of the province of New Brunswick, approximately 20 miles distant from the City of Bathurst. Discovery of the No. 6 orebody by diamond drilling in 1952 was followed by the finding in March 1953, of the larger and higher- grade No. 12 orebody, approximately six miles to the north of the No. 6 deposit. Original development was financed by St. Joseph Lead Co., and included a small open-pit operation with a 10C ton per day pilot mill at No. 6 orebody, shaft sinking and underground development at No. 1; orebody, and an extensive program of laboratory and pilot plant metallurgical research on No. 12 ore. These operations were suspended in May 1958, and remained in standby condition until June 1961, when the equity of St. Joseph Lead Co. was purchased by a group headed by M. J. Boylen, K. C. Irving, Maritime Mining Corporation, and the Patino Corporation. Construction of a mine plant and concentrator at the No. 12 mine commenced in October 1962 and the concentrator was placed in operation in March, 1961b. Preparation of the open pit mine for production, construction of the No. 6 Concentrator to produce bulk Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag concentrate from No. 6 ore, and construction of an Imperial Smelting Process smelter at Belledune were started in 1964 and placed in operation in September 1966.

DEMANDS upon power plants by the war program in 1941 intensified problems of coal utilization. It was an outstanding year in that field. The domestic heating stove witnessed outstanding development; the research folks progressing so rapidly that the design of the "perfect" stove is just around the corner. Use of colored motion pictures in analyzing fuel-bed performances has reached a new high with the colored pictures taken at minute intervals and projected at sixteen frames a second as shown by the Koppers Coal Co. and the Anthracite Institute (on domestic stokers) and the Consolidated Edison Co. (industrial stokers). Continued efforts of this kind will be beneficial in analyzing further some of the "Code for Testing Coal" problems confronting Subcommittee No. 2 of the Joint A. I. M. E. - A. S. M. E. Committees.

Since 1933, the Coal Mine Rating Schedule in Pennsylvania has provided credits in the Workmen's Compensation insurance premium rates for the use of safety hats, goggles and shoes. In that year, the worth of such protective clothing had just been well established and satisfactory articles were being made by a number of manufacturers. Standards for these three items of safety clothing' were written in the Rating Schedule and have been little changed through the years. The credit in the premium rate for a bituminous mine is $0.14 for hats, $o.08 for goggles, $o.08 for shoes. In order to earn such credit, it is necessary that all the employees in the particular mine be equipped with safety hats, goggles or shoes, as the case may be. In fact, it is not unusual for mines to qualify in all three categories, thus earning a rate reduction of $o.30 per $100 of payroll. These credits have been a decided stimulus to the use of safety clothing, and at present insured bituminous mines are credited as follows: Hats........ 63 per cent, or 22,600 employees Goggles..... 28 per cent, or 10,000 employees Shoes....... 44 per cent, or 15,800 employees Of course, many other employees wear these protective articles but they are in mines that are not fully equipped and so are not given the rate credit. The growth in use of this equipment has not been spectacular but it has been steady, as shown in Table I. An interesting thing about this is that it covers virtually all of the small and medium-sized bitumi- nous mine operations in Pennsylvania. A number of large operations are included, but many large mines are self-insured. It is difficult to keep alive interest in safety work in the smaller mines: first, because employment of safety engineers is out of the question and the one or several mine officials employed are often concerned only with production; second, because the life of many small mines is brief, so that safe conditions although established do not last long. Conditions as to safety in mines of this class rest chiefly with inspectors of state mine departments and of casualty insurance companies. MINE-DRAINAGE and the ever-increasing demand for water on the plains have within the past few years necessitated the driving of a great number of adits and tunnels, including many of considerable size and great length. In most instances, ex isting conditions have called for extreme rapidity of execution; and this necessity, coupled with the high altitudes at which most of the work has been carried on, excessive freight-rates, and difficulty -of access, has involved many complex and interesting problems. One of the most rapidly executed undertakings of this class is the Laramie tunnel, recently completed for the Laramie-Poudre Reservoirs & Irrigation Co. This tunnel is driven through Green ridge, a spur of the Continental Divide, which separates the Laramie river from the Cache-la-Poudre in Laramie county, Colo. Green ridge is extremely persistent, and further northward in Wyoming is known as Sherman hill, the highest point on the Union Pacific railway. At the point where the tunnel is driven, two opposing bends bring these streams within 2.5 miles of each other, with a difference in elevation of 500 ft. The rock exposed on the banks of the two rivers does not differ materially in hardness; and, without a geological study of the conditions involved, it would appear that the difference in the depth of erosion of the two streams is due principally to the greater volume of water at this point in the Cache-la-Poudre, which has a drainage-area above the tunnel-portal of 110 sq. miles, as against 30 sq. miles of natural drainage for the Laramie. To increase the water-supply at the tunnel, however, this latter amount has been augmented by two side collection-canals, which bring the available drainage-area up to 84 square miles. SUBJECT to formal Board approval in September, AIME dues will continue indefinitely at the present scale of $20 for Members and Associate Members; and $12 for Junior Members for the first six years of such membership, thereafter $17. That is the wish of the Board of Directors and the will of the membership, as expressed in the recent referendum. Though the official returns, as reported by the tellers, are not available as this is written, the data are sufficiently complete to give the results to the nearest percent. The total vote was approximately 93 pct for continuance of the present scale. Metals Branch members voted about 94 pet for continuance; Mining Branch members slightly less than that; and Petroleum Branch members about 91 pct. As in the referendum of 1949, there was no particular difference of opinion on the question of dues as between the three Branches. The percentage of ballots returned was about 61 pct, only slightly more than in the 1949 referendum. But the affirmative vote was much greater, 93 pct against 78 pet in the earlier referendum. Looked at another way, a majority of those to whom ballots were sent, 56 pct, voted to continue the present scale of dues, whereas only 46 1/2 pct of those canvassed voted to raise the dues in the previous referendum. But approximately 600 , members expressed their opinion that the dues should go back to $15 for Members and Associate Members and to $10 and $15 for Junior Members. This is a substantial group of members who either do not think they are getting their money's worth from AIME membership, or believe that a more businesslike conduct of Institute affairs should provide current services at less cost, or believe that more service is being provided for their dues than they need. As to the first point, it is probable that some members are not getting their money's worth. They perhaps have only a fringe interest in. AIME activities, or they do not or cannot participate in such activities at the Local Section, divisional, or national level, so that all they get out of the Institute is the monthly journal, which they do not have time to read. If they did read it intelligently, and acted upon the professional information thus gained, it is difficult to understand how one or more ideas cannot be gained that would be worth $20 to them professionally. But the 600 members who want lower dues offer a challenge to the Directors and to the staff to do a better job; to make Institute membership so rewarding that every. member will be thoroughly satisfied. Twenty 1935 to 1939 dollars are worth only $11.60 now, according to the latest government data, but that makes it all the more necessary for us all to appraise the value of what we buy. To the 93 pct of Institute members who expressed a vote of confidence, so to speak, the staff, and we feel sure the Directors as well, are most appreciative and thankful.

In several log interpretation methods, water saturation is evaluated by use of the ratio of the readings of a short spacing resistivity device and a long spacing resistivity device plus information on the mud filtrate and connate water resistivities, which is often derivable from the SP. These methods are valid over a certain range of conditions, usually specified by moderate invasion and R.. greater than R,. Since these methods involve no explicit evaluation of the formation factor, F, the saturafiion so found may be used in the standard Archie equation to derive a computed formation factor which, as a check, may be compared with the formation factor known from other independent measurements. Discrepancies in the two values of formation factor generally indicate that the ratio method is not within its range of applicability. If the computed F is too low, the corresponding S, is too low; if the computed F is too great, the corresponding S, is too great. By means of this "porosity balance" check, and some knowledge of the probable conditions of invasion, the interpretation can often be improved. The poqosity balance check is discussed for the cases of the Induction-Electrical Log Interpretation Method, the Rocky Mountain Method, and the R.,/R, Method. For the first method, a discussion is also given for the case of shaly sands. INTRODUCTION Al though many logging tools are available to obtain a practical value of porosity, the only logging method reflecting the water saturation is electrical logging. Water saturation is commonly computed from electrical log data by means of the basic Archie formula, Where F is the formation factor, R, the resistivity of the formation water, and R, the true resistivity of the formation. One difficulty in this procedure is a possible error in the evaluation of R, from the logs— for example, in the case of very deep invasion. There is no possibility, inherent in the procedure, which would provide a check of the accuracy of R, and, hence, of the computed saturation. Other approaches have been proposed which are based essentially on the ratio of the readings made with two dzerent devices: one device, with a short radius of investigation, provides a value close to the resistivity of the invaded zone; the second device, with a long radius of investigation, gives a value close to the true resistivity of the bed. By these methods, the determination of saturation is made independently of any direct knowledge of the formation factor. Therefore, if the formation factor (or porosity) is known from other sources (core analysis, neutron log, MicroLog . . .), it becomes possible to take advantage of this additional information in order to check the value of saturation derived from these latter methods. Inasmuch as this proposed check procedure relies on a knowledge of the value of formation factor or porosity, it has been deemed appropriate to call this verification a porosity balance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the principle and the application of the porosity balance, depending on the method of interpretation being used. Basis of the Method There are in existence three interpretation methods by means of which the water saturation can bc found without a knowledge of the formation factor (or porosity). As just stated, they are based on the fact that the ratio of the two resistivities (one measuring the resistivity close to the hole, the other measuring the resistivity far from the hole) is independent of the formation factor since it affects the two resistivity measurements in the same way. Chronologically, the resistivity ratio methods are: (1) the Rocky Mountain Method, which has been used since 1943 and was explained in a paper in 1949;' (2) the R../R, Method or Shaly Sand Method, presented in 1954, which permits the calculation of the water saturation in both clean and shaly sands2; and (3) the Induction-Electrical Log Method, presented in 1957 for the interpretation of the induction-electrical log combination." Each method requires certain definite conditions in order for the interpretation to be reliable. The porosity balance method will let us know whether these conditions are fulfilled. In clean formations we know that the fundamental Archie relation (Eq. 1) must always be verified. This relation can be rewritten:

On Friday, Jan. 17, the thirteenth impression of the Perkin Medal was presented to Dr. Frederick Gardner Cottrell, at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society of Chemical Industry, held at the Chemists' Club, in New York City. The presentation address was delivered by Dr. C. F. Chandler, Senior Past President of the Society. The medal was awarded for the recipient's work in the electrical precipitation of suspended particles in gases. Dr. Cottrell's career, which is so familiar to members of the Institute, was sketched by Dr. Chandler. He told at some length of the experiments leading up to the final solution of electrostatic precipitation, which has done so much to solve the problem of smelter smoke. The principal interest in Dr. Cottrell's speech of acceptance lay in his remarks about helium, the production of which has been so reduced in cost that it has practically supplanted the use of hydrogen for inflation purposes in war balloons. He said: "Two or three weeks after war was declared in 1917, Dr. R. B. Moore attended a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City. At the general session, Mr. Seibel of the University of Kansas, gave a paper on krypton and xenon in some of the natural gases of Kansas. At the end of his paper, he expressed regret that at such a time, when everyone was thinking of war problems, his paper was of a purely scientific nature and had no practical bearing on the war. Dr. Moore immediately got up and said that he did not agree with Mr. Seibel. The presence of helium in those wells could, and should, have a very practical bearing on the war, as this gas could be extracted in quantity from the natural gas and used for balloons and Zeppelins. He pointed out some of the natural advantages of helium over hydrogen, and quoted Sir William Ramsey's letter advocating the use of helium for airships. The general attitude of those present was one of scepticism, so he finally asked Dr. Cady for his opinion who stated that he believed-the thing could be done, but was very doubtful whether it could ever be made practical on account of the cost." Dr. Moore in a letter wrote: "That same day I talked to Dr. Parsons, who was present at the meeting and was returning to Washington almost immediately. I told him what had happened, and that I believed the matter should be taken up by the Bureau at once and presented to the War Department. He promised to do this as soon as he got to Washington; and I know that he did take the matter up with other Bureau officials." Dr. Cottrell continued in part: News of Ramsey's suggestions also reached this .country through other channels and eventually came to our attention. Professors Satterly and Patterson of the University of Toronto commenced experimentation of the subject Jan. 1, 1916. Col. G. A. Burrell, who headed the research department of the Gas Warfare Service at the American University, tells me that Cady's experiments had also suggested similar possibilities to him.

Most mine operations are hampered to varying degrees by excessive inflow of water into mines or scarcity of water for processing the materials. These internal problems are compounded in many cases by such external hydrological problems as lowering of ground-water levels in areas outside the mine properties, subsidence of ground surface, adverse geochemical changes, and pollution. The development of a mine below the water table disturbs the natural ground-water system, causing a convergence in the flow of water from a surrounding area. The mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table. The fact that mines are commonly located in complex and somewhat anomalous geologic environments prevents an idealized treatment of the mine as a well that would be similar to a water well in a homogeneous aquifer having isotropic conditions. Yet, adherence to some principles of ground-water behavior is helpful when combined with an understanding of the local geology. A program calling for an appraisal of all pertinent hydrological conditions prior to mining and during various stages of development should supply adequate information for mine officials to anticipate difficulties and to allow for corrective measures. Before and during mining operations there should be a mine hydrology framework and plan, in which there is continual upgrading of such considerations as anticipated actions, consequences of actions, remedial plans, and contingencies.

Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were made on blends of steel plant flue dust and portland cement to determine whether the flue dust could be pelletized for use as a source of iron in dry process cement manufacture. Strength and setting time results showed that an acceptable agglomerate can be made with a Type II portland cement binder. Abrasion-resistant and well-sized pellets were made in a horizontal drum, using a simulated closed circuit, with a binder content of 7.5% and a moisture content below 15%. Pellet quality was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in binder concentration above 5%. Simulations of stockpiling and weathering indicate that little difficulty would be encountered with use of the flue dust pellets in cement plants.

ALL 32 of the Local Sections of the Institute in the continental United States and practically all of the Divisions as well, had representatives present at the Conferences of Local Section and Division Delegates at the Annual Meeting. Three sessions were held, two on Monday and one on Thursday, both the incoming and outgoing Presidents of the Institute being on hand to con- duct the meetings. H. J. Brown was called to the chair during a portion of the last session, President Fulton having to leave early. Complete minutes of the meetings have ,been sent to all delegates. In general, the Local Sections appeared, from their reports, to have risen to the wartime demands made upon them with their usual resourcefulness. Apparently more difficulty has arisen in the last year in arranging attractive programs and securing acceptable speakers, this being perhaps attributable to the fact that most technical men have been extremely busy. Careful planning ahead .has usually brought good results, however. Another wartime difficulty has been the matter of transportation to meetings, gasoline rationing and congestion on the railroads and buses being a handicap to attendance. Sharing cars has proved practical as a method of meeting this issue, this again requiring planning. Suitable meeting places and a supply of food have been another difficulty for some local groups.

THE oxidation of pyrites and marcasite in coal-mine strata to produce discolored acid mine drainage has long been explained by chemical reactions occurring in three stages: 1. The iron sulphide minerals are oxidized by air in the presence of water to produce a nearly colorless solution of ferrous (iron) sulphate and some sulphuric acid. 2, The ferrous sulphate and part of the sulphuric acid combine with additional oxygen to form ferric (iron) sulphate. 3. The ferric sulphate hydrolyzes to form a reddish-brown precipitate and additional sulphuric acid. Nevertheless, chemical data alone are not sufficient to explain all observed facts. The first stage seems to proceed more slowly in the chemical laboratory than in nature. The second and third stages normally occur to a marked extent within a few days with raw mine water. However, the visible discoloration that characterizes these latter stages will not develop for months if the mine water is sterilized. By means of bacteriological techniques, two organisms have been isolated from acid coal-mine drainage. These are believed to have a part in promoting the chemical reactions summarized above. One organism is considered to be Thio-6aciZZus thiooxidans, which is known to be able to convert elementary sulphur or sodium thiosulphate to sulphuric acid. Its relation to the formation of acid mine drainage has not Yet been established. Apparently it does not Promote the oxidation of ferrous iron compounds in mine drainage to the ferric state. The second organism has not been identified by name but is described as " Gram negative, non-spore-forming rods approximately 0.4 micron wide by 0.8 to 1.0 micron long." A pure culture of this when added to sterile mine water will cause the latter to become amber and develop the typical rusty precipitate. However, it has not been found to convert sulphur compounds to sulphuric acid. Further research is planned to determine whether or not these microorganisms play a significant part in the first stage of oxidation whereby pyrites and marcasite minerals go into solution. Some of the conditions found in abandoned sections of coal mines, such as a reduced Percentage of Oxygen and increased percentage of carboll 'dioxide in the air, as well as the existing temperature and acidity ranges, will be tolerated by and may even be favorable to these organisms.
