Interpretive geotechnical investigations were performed for the construction of approximately 15,250 m (50,000 ft) of wastewater interceptor tunnels in Austin, Texas. Subsurface materials consist of claystone (or clay shale), siltstone, altered volcanic tuffs, chalk and limestone. Special conditions include multiple crossings of Onion Creek with cover ranging from about 1/2 to 3 m (2 to 10 ft.), and the potential for mixed-face conditions consisting of water-bearing gravels overlying clay shale or siltstone. The methods and results of the geotechnical investigations are discussed and the inferred construction conditions are compared to those encountered during tunneling. A suggested format is presented for interpretive geotechnical reports for underground construction projects.

A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

The Taharoa ironsand deposit covers approximately 16 km2 and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The heavy mineral-rich sands predominantly contain titanomagnetite, ilmenite and hematite, along with lesser amounts of amphiboles, pyroxenes, and feldspars. Throughout the Taharoa mine site 142 samples were collected of which approximately 25 samples were used in mineralogical analyses of the magnetic, heavy non-magnetic and light non-magnetic fractions. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses confirmed the high abundance of homogeneous magnetite and magnetite containing ilmenite exsolution lamellae which have oxidised to hematite. A limited number of sand samples were collected from Taranaki beaches. Petrography reveals exsolution textures of magnetite and ilmenite (now hematite), and homogenous magnetite grains similar to those observed at Taharoa. Petrographic analyses from previous research projects were also closely investigated in order to make mineralogical comparisons from along the west coast of the North Island and with other potential source areas. The origin of detrital magnetite grains along the west coast of the North Island is generally presumed to be the eroded volcanic cones of the Egmont volcanoes and active and dormant volcanoes of the central North Island. Electron microprobe analyses of magnetite grains from Taranaki beach samples reveal TiO2 values of between 1.5 and 120 per cent. MgO and A12O3 contents also vary widely from 0.75 to 6.5 per cent. This large variability may reflect different volcanic eruptions, the presence of exsolution textures or alternative source areas for these magnetite grains. Geochemical results from the Taharoa mine site correlate with the Taranaki beach samples suggesting that the Egmont volcanoes are certainly one source area. Variability in XRF results, especially Fe and Ti contents (9.04 - 59.22 and 0.80 - 4.64 respectively), from the magnetic and heavy non-magnetic fractions likely reflect the detrital nature of this deposit.

Tailings, from an active copper-zinc operation, containing about 10% sulphur were investigated to assess the onset of acid production and potential lime requirements for treatment of drainage. Oxygen consumption rates were measured over two years to verify spatial and seasonal variations in sulphide oxidation rates. Shallow cores were collected to assess the quality of tailings porewater and to characterize solids that had been subjected to oxidation and depletion of neutralization potential (NP) for several years. Oxygen consumption data were used to quantify rates of NP depletion and onset of acid drainage from the near- surface tailings. Based on measured oxygen consumption rates and identification of NP remaining in the tailings, future lime use in the treatment plant was expected to rise significantly without mitigation. Geochemical modeling calculations were calibrated with observed oxygen consumption rates and the model results agreed well with actual lime use in the waste water treatment plant during operations. The modeling also demonstrated the benefits of lower lime demands and treatment costs after closure as a result of construction a soil cover on the acid generating tailings.

The U.S Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments (Mucho, et al., 1995). As a part of this wider research effort, a multifaceted ground control investigation was conducted at the Diamond TB Mine of RoxCoal, Inc. The study included statistical analysis of mine-wide roof bolt performance, instrumented bolt test areas, stress damage mapping, and pillar design analysis. The mine employs state-of-the-art continuous miner technology, including mobile roof supports and continuous haulage, to retreat mine the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. A herringbone section design makes the stability of the center belt entry critical to efficient retreat mining. Roof cutters formed during section development sometimes set up unstable immediate roof conditions in advance of the belt entry mobile roof supports during retreat mining.

The aim of this investigation was to reduce the cost of primary steel de-oxidation by substitution of aluminium primary de-oxidation with a practice that uses carbon. The cost of carbon is four times lower than that of aluminium. The application of carbon would directly result in raw material cost savings. Investigations were conducted at Iscor?s Newcastle steel plant on various steel grades. Specific production aspects were emphasized to ensure that the cost savings accrued would not create secondary expenses. These production aspects entailed: ?Yields on de-oxidation elements ?De-oxidation capabilities ?Alloying yields (Mn and Si) ?Carbon-pickup ?Nitrogen-pickup ?Temperature loss during tap ?Steel cleanliness ?Slag morphology. This project proved that carbon de-oxidation, apart from reducing de-oxidation raw material cost due to cheaper raw materials being used and lower consumption rates, resulted in steel that is cleaner and has lower nitrogen concentrations. Carbon primary de-oxidation has been implemented at Iscor?s Newcastle plant on a large range of steel grades, ranging from ultra-high carbon (> 0.60% C) to ultra-low carbon (< 0.03% C) grades. A net saving of between R100 000 and R200 000 per month was achieved.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) amended the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 to improve the safety of mines. The MINER Act established a Technical Study Panel (the Panel) to provide independent scientific and engineering review and recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition and fire retardant materials in underground coal mining (1). Because frictional heating is a common cause of belt fires, the Panel recommended that the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) evaluate the drum friction test to determine if such a test would contribute to conveyor belt safety beyond that provided by the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT). This paper compares the results of the drum friction test to results from the BELT and large-scale tests for six different conveyor belts. The results are used to evaluate the drum friction test as a method to determine the fire resistance of conveyor belts.

Flotation is used in mining to produce concentrates of copper, gold and several other valuable ores. In 2017, a copper mine near Globe, Arizona improved their rougher cells productivity using technically advanced electro-hydraulic actuators in the flotation process by enabling excellent tank pulp level process stability. The new actuators controlled the dart valve position to allow pulp to leave the cell. Tank cell pulp level can change due to feed and discharge fluctuations from neighboring tanks. When traditional pneumatic actuators are used, they have sluggish response times and overshoot due to the inherent physical property of air being compressible. Electro-hydraulic actuators have the benefit of hydraulic stiffness to deliver accurate and repeatable (0.1%) dart valve positioning. The froth layer has more opportunity time to maximize mass transfer into the launderer. The results are an increase in copper recovery by 2-4%. INTRODUCTION In 2013 there was an international flotation technical conference well attended by respected flotation specialists for both mining companies and academia. During the technical session a leading metallurgist was discussing pulp level measurement and said that when he was on the cell deck he stated, pneumatic actuators air cylinders stroking up and down. The presenter then claimed with confidence that "I listened to actuator move so the pulp level in the tank was being controlled!" No one questioned his assumption and I can assert that the audience was quite technical and not shy in their critiques of speakers. The flotation community simply believed that the existing pneumatic technology was enough with no alternative. Having a stable flotation cell pulp level is critical to effective copper recovery. Controlling pulp levels in flotation cells is a complex task that includes modulating dart valves in each cell. The use of REXA Electraulic actuators will decrease the process dead time and maintain froth height in a controlled manner, especially from pulp slurry volume fluctuations from neighboring cells. By reducing flotation cell pulp level tank height variation, a copper mine in Arizona has realized a 2-4% recovery improvement by increasing the froth transfer to the launderers in the rougher cell circuits compared to pneumatic actuators. This paper examines the benefits of using an electro-hydraulic actuator to ensure proper pulp level control and reduce the process operational cost. It will focus on actuator positioning the dart valves to maintain pulp level setpoint at a copper mine in Arizona.

"The emission of hydrocarbon gases from coal beds and contiguous strata causes many accidents in coal—mine workings, the number of fatalities so caused being second only to those due to falls of roof. Gases tend to increase in amount with depth of coal mining, hence the danger of explosion is increased with depth. The pressure of the gas in virgin—coal areas at a distance from mine workings likewise tends to increase with depth from the surface, probably due to corresponding increase in hydraulic head and possibly, when the gas is held in nonporous formations, to greater ground pressure. The rise in gas pressure with depth under usual conditions is shown in wells drilled from the surface and in some coal fields in drill holes into the face of workings; however, under normal conditions of coal formation gas does not issue into workings under high pressure because the coal and adjacent strata have many bedding and joint planes which allow the gas to escape freely at the face of the workings. The rare occurrence of instantaneous outbursts of gas, with violent effects referred to later, constitute the exception.Variations of volume and pressure of fire-damp or methane found in different coal beds by wells at a distance from mine workings, are analogous to variations in volume and pressure of natural gas found in different gas and oil sands, although in general the pressure tends to increase with the depth. Sometimes, however, in tight sands higher in the formation the pressure of gas therein is abnormally high, and on drilling the well deeper gas in the lower strata may be found at lower pressure."

Traditionally (with a few exceptions) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been utilized on tunnel projects where the risks associated with deep tunnels (rock burst, squeeze, etc) are low (or expected to be low). This has generally been due to the extremely adverse consequences of entrapping or damaging a TBM under such conditions; but also due to the relative difficulty of dealing with these ground conditions in the confined working area of a TBM, in comparison to a drill and blast heading. This paper review the constraints of operating a TBM in a deep tunnel and discusses related project experience, particularly recent and current experience with TBMs in the deep Alpine Base Tunnels. Potential future applications of TBMs in the development of large, deep underground mines are also discussed.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy&apos;s strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. "This paper focuses on determining the favorable geological and hydrogeological conditions for forming uranium occurrences in the Froqlos-Jabal Abou Rabah region, Palmyrides, Syria. Eighty rock samples from this area were analyzed by spectrometric gamma-ray technique to determine the radioactive concentrations of eU and eTh, and of %K. Uranium concentrations in shallow and deep groundwaters were also determined. High uranium concentrations were registered owing to the presence of phosphatic outcrops in the study region. The uranium migration trends and its remobilization were analyzed through the analysis of the behavior of eU, eTh, and their ratio. A positive relationship between eU and eU/eTh, and a negative relationship between eTh and eU/eTh in geological formations of different ages supports the secondary remobilization of uranium. The role of groundwater movement in transportation and redeposition of uranium mineralization is discussed: deep waters are less oxidizing than near-surface waters, and do not appear to have significantly remobilized uranium. This indicates that the source of secondary uranium mineralization is surficial or near surficial, and is mainly related to the leaching of outcropping phosphatic layers.Integration of the results with established radioactive and geological sections reveals four radioactive anomalous zones: north Froqlos, Kherbet Hannora, northwestern flanks of Jabal Abou Rabah (Kherbet Al-Hajar), and the northwestern limit of the Ghuntor depression. The high uranium concentration in north Froqlos is because of its original presence in the phosphate beds and extensive fracturing, which allows groundwaters to penetrate and remobilize the uranium. High uranium concentrations in the other three locations are caused by the presence of evaporites and capillary action, which draws solutions upwards and causes redeposition as surface crusts (gypcrete)."

Blast vibration seismograms are generally collected strictly for compliance with regulations. The peak levels (including dominant frequency) are typically all that are looked at. However, these records contain a lot more information about how a blast has performed. The seismogram is actually a record of explosive energy that was not used in fragmenting rock. The trick is to determine how to extract information that would be useful in analyzing blast performance.

This paper discusses the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation system used at The Atlantic Building jobsite. The support of excavation system had to be adaptable to the different conditions surrounding the site. These conditions included support of four historic building façades, including the nine-story Atlantic Building, as well as support of three historic row-houses along two walls. Directly adjacent to the site is the historic Ford?s Theatre and townhouse. Across a 15? alley is the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Building, and across a 30? alley is the Federal Election Commission Building and another ongoing excavation. Of historical note, these two alleys were the escape route for John Wilkes Booth following his assassination of President Lincoln. With the excavation being 53? to 58? deep, the system included driven and drilled soldier piles, drilled bracket piles, and two modified tangent walls. The bracing included tiebacks, corner braces, wales, cross lot struts, and a specially designed support system for the nine-story façade. The footprint of the excavation included 12 corners and all alleys and streets were to remain open during construction. The performance requirements for system movement at Ford?s Theatre and AILA Building were ½ inches in the horizontal direction. The modified tangent walls were used in these areas to provide stiffness. The soil conditions at the site were fill material on top of a shallow, sandy, silty, gravel layer on top of a deep layer of soft organic silt and clay. Below the silt and clay layer was fine sandy material at the subgrade.

"I had been requested earlier this year by MetSoc, our sister society of CIM, to contribute a chapter on technical developments in Canadian mineral processing over the past 50 years to their 50th Anniversary volume. Accepting the challenge of assembling such a chapter seemed at first a reasonably straightforward task, until one realises that the list of contributions by Canadians to mineral processing over this period has been more than just significant. It turns out to have been an extraordinarily fertile time for innovation and impact for Canadian-based technology. The list is necessarily a subjective one, however I had no trouble identifying twenty technology developments that are clearly outstanding, and there are undoubtedly others. As much as possible, I approached the individuals themselves who played key roles in each technology and asked that they tell the “story”. Without exception, all who were invited accepted eagerly and delivered more than I had hoped for. The technologies have been grouped into those that are truly Canadian innovations, such as the Knelson gravity concentrator and the McGill gas dispersion sensors in flotation, and technologies where Canadians and Canada played a very significant role in their success and implementation, such as AG/SAG grinding and ion-beam surface analysis. Also included are what may be termed technology transfer initiatives and institutions that have risen to a world class level, such as SGS Lakefield and the Canadian Mineral Processors Society of CIM. The challenge is now for the coming generation to continue this record of innovation and contribution to the industry, and that includes the (mostly) Canadian mining and metallurgical companies who have taken the longer term view and supported many of these initiatives, through their critical early years, with both financing and project sites for these ideas. Let us hope that the current trend of mining company globalization will not dampen their enthusiasm to participate. This plenary presentation will highlight many of these technologies, the individuals behind them, and their significance to the mineral processing industry."

It is self-evident that economic pressure demands that today?s mines stay ahead and stay competitive. The challenge, however, isto find fresh approaches to the pursuit of efficiency and operational effectiveness. Rather than focusing on individual activities in isolation, a process that can lead to poor investment decisions affecting other critical areas of operation, a key concept is optimization of the whole value-adding process of mining. This concept is often called ?mine to mill?. Whereas it is never easy to establish optimal conditions across a whole mining operation, the quality and consistency of the blasted rock strongly affects all operations. In many instances an inability to control rock breaking has been unchallenged, leading to significant investment in time and money to manage the consequences of poor and/or inconsistent rock breaking. This paper discusses how electronic initiation systems can play a major role in optimizing the whole mining operation. Electronically programmed detonators provide not only the ability to tightly control a key parameter, namely timing, but also the opportunity to extract blast data for a continuous improvement process. The ability to alter predictably, using feedback from the downstream processes, blasting variables such as fragmentation, throw, wall stability, and vibration, is a huge advantage. The current understanding of the effect of timing, accuracy, and scatter on rock fragmentation is reviewed and offers reasons why there is significant progress in controlling blast results. Two case studies are examined, which demonstrate the benefits of the technology on the economics of the operations under review.

The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east side of the Pearl River estuary. Geological condition of the site is quite complicated. On top of the sea bed, there is a layer of soft silt 8 - 14 m thick. Under the soft silt, there are intercalated layers of sand, silt and clay. Average surface elevation of the underlying undulatory weathered bed rock is about - 20 m, with a variation of about 10 m. In certain locations, the weathered bed rock is covered with a layer of silt 3 - 4 m thick. This paper gives brief account of three types of wharf structures which are of particular interest, constructed in the last few years: (A) Platform type wharf structure with frontal sheet piling and steel raking pile in the rear; (B) Relieving Platform type structure with steel sheet piling and inclined anchoring HP pile ; (C) Steel pipe pile row supported apron added to a marginal quay. Average construction time of a deepwater berth is about six months.

Introduction This Instructor’s Copy contains most of the information needed to use the Wearing Hearing Protection Properly 3-D training reel. It offers practical suggestions on how to use the reel as a training aid, performance objectives for deciding if the training is appropriate for your needs, and discussion notes that provide additional information to the user. The 3-D reel was designed as a self-teaching aid that drillers and others who work at a drill site can use wherever the opportunity for such training presents itself. The latter could be a company preshift requirement or a tailgate session where workers would have an opportunity to view and discuss the reel. It could also be an individual looking at the reel in a pickup truck prior to beginning work at a drill site. The 3-D training reel is versatile in that it can be used for a small group of persons or for a single worker. For any of these situations, information is transferred to the individual by viewing each of the seven colorful, in-depth 3-D scenes and relating the words that appear in each scene to what is depicted in the visual.
