"Abstract: The combination of failure in joints of diaphragm walls and their exposure to water pressure may have far reaching effects ranging from water leakage to the risk of catastrophic loss of stability for the retaining wall and civil structures behind it. Investigations of imperfect joints in diaphragm walls have led to the development and testing of a quality tool to monitor the joint integrity of diaphragm walls during construction. By applying independent mechanical sensors (“joint inspector”) to the steel frame of hydraulic or mechanical grabs, it is now possible to record the surface conditions of exposed primary joints during the construction of secondary panels. This allows for the implementation of corrective action during the construction process should joint quality not indicate a watertight connection to the adjacent panel. The joint inspector, used for different types of stop ends, was tested on a full scale test field at several construction sites. The implementation of this new quality tool drives a new quality standard for deep excavations in inner city areas.General introduction to diaphragm wallsDiaphragm walls are reinforced concrete elements constructed using bentonite slurry to temporarily support an open trench in the ground. They are used in two main fields of application in civil construction, as foundation elements for vertical and horizontal loads (barrettes) and as retaining walls for excavation pits.Particularly for deep excavation pits in inner city areas, diaphragm walls are used as temporary or permanent walls of retaining walls. Alternative retaining wall systems would be secant pile walls, sheet piles or soldier piles, but these have disadvantages in structural strength when compared to diaphragm walls. If the vertical load of existing buildings next to the excavation pit has to be accommodated, the most practical solution can be found using diaphragm walls supported by prestressed anchors, steel struts or slabs."

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. In connection with its renewed study seeking solutions to problems created by release of acid water from bituminous coal mines, the Bureau of Mines recently surveyed reports already written on the subject. This publication is based on that search. The Problem Poor distribution of water is evident on an ordinary geographic map of the United States. The more abundant supplies of surface water appear to be centered in the northeast, the southeast, and the central humid areas of the country. It is in the midst of this abundant surface water, in the Ohio River Valley, that most of the bituminous coal is mined. Varied industry has located in the valley to use the coal and the river. The coal is a source of power and o raw material. The river provides transportation for raw and finished materials; equally important, it provides the water that is used for cooling and processing in manufacturing. It also serves as a vehicle for the disposal of waste.

The rubber-sleeve core barrel was developed to improve core recovery from unconsolidated sands, where it is most difficult to obtain cores with conventional barrels. The use of a rubber-sleeve core retainer, together with other departures from clsual design, has required a considerable amount of testing to prove its op-erability. Tests run in shallow experimental holes and in drilling wells in the U. S. and Vemzuela have, to a large extent, proved the operation of the barrel. Internal mechanism troubles, such as sandbinding of the sleeve, have been largely overcome. Cores have been recovered from completely unconsolidated sands where conventional coring has almost been abandoned because of poor recovery. In addition to retaining the core until brought to the surface, the barrel gives a "packaged-ar-cut" core, which is coilverzient for handling and transportatiorz. In the initial work, drag blade cutters, roller cutters, and tungsten carbide insert cutters were usrd for cutting unconsolidated sands. Further bit head development is presently being conducted using diamond heads in unconsolidated sands where shaler, hard sands, and limestones are encountered in adjacent formations. Thir work should render the barrel capable of cratting and recovering most types of formations, possibly including broken and frac- tured fornlations. This development is being carried on in cooperation with a diamond bit manufacturer. INTRODUCTIO N For many years the oil industry has needed greater recovery of cores from unconsolidated formations. Conventional equipment has been used to core unconsolidated sands with little success. Specifically, a core barrel was needed which would recover unconsolidated sands in a condition that would give useful reservoir information. DEVELOPMENT OF 'THE RUBBER-SLEEVE CORE BARREL Basic Requirements of Unconsolidated Sand Corino The basic need was defined as a core barrel that would obtain a continuous unconsolidated core with sand grains in place as deposited in the formation. A preliminary survey of coring equipment and search of the literature pointed out the weaknesses of conventional core barrels. Laboratory tests using unconsolidated sand in a metal tube simulated actual sand movement into the core barrel during conventional coring. In conventional barrels the core sometimes crumbles and bridges, or fails under compressive column action, becomes oversize, and wedges against the walls of the inner barrel. The core barrel requirements established by the surveys and preliminary tests are as follows. 1. The core should be held to- gether as it is cut so it cannot crumble and bridge against the walls of the coring tool, care being taken not to permit damage from fluid circulation. 2. The core should be continuously supported as it is cut so it will not have to support itself in compression. 3. The core should be packaged in the barrel to retain an undisturbed condition during the trip out of the well. The packaging should be such that the core can be removed from the barrel and shipped to the core analysis laboratory without physical disturbance or alteration of fluid content by exposure to the atmosphere. Operation of the Rubber-Sleeve Core Barrel The rubber-sleeve core barrel (Fig. 1) meets the basic requirements for the recovery of unconsolidated sands.

A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

The Mine granite at the Ardlethan tinfield is dated by Rb-Sr on a muscovite concentrate at not less than 417 ± 2.5 Ma (2s), consistent with the intrusion of this granitic body into folded Late Ordovician sediments. A combination of Rb-Sr and K-Ar evidence suggests a slightly younger age, 41O ± 2.5 Ma, both for the neighbouring Ardlethan Granite and for the hydrothermal alteration of the Mine granite, with which the tin is associated.On this basis, the somewhat high 206Pb/204Pb of two galena samples from within the hydrothermal alteration zone is best explained by an increase in U/Pb of order 10 per cent during a geochemical event in the Late Precambrian, in the rocks which eventually yielded the Pb to the mineralising fluid. This earlier event probably increased Th/U in these rocks as well, by as much as 5 per cent. If these reconstructions are valid, the lower-than-average U/Pb implied for the original Precambrian source rock bespeaks a mantle component of marginally greater proportion than for "average orogene".

The 2,408 meter (7,900-foot) long Middle Rouge Parkway Interceptor Extension varies in size from 1.52-meter (5-foot) to 2.36 meter (7-foot 9-inch) inside diameter. Most of the sewer was constructed in tunnel through fine sands and silts. Piping of these soils through the concrete liner eventually resulted in a loss of soil support, settlement and/or severe distress of the sewer, and the formation of several sinkholes. The repair and restoration was generally performed in the sewer and included cast-in-place concrete, shotcrete, cured in place pipe, soil stabilization, cement grouting, dewatering, and chemical grouting. As a part of the work, temporary pump stations and flow diversions were required to perform the work while minimizing discharges to the adjacent Rouge River.

In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. IT is not intended that this paper should be regarded as an account of the geology of the Lyell district. It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. The attempt has been made to present certain salient features, omitting a mass of detail, which, although important in the complete investigation and understanding of the economic geology, yet would be confusing to a group of geologists making a short visit. The location of some of the significant occurrences bearing on the main problems and conclusions are indicated in the text in order to enable members to plan the location and direction of their excursions...

The influence of varying amounts of magnesia, silica, and alumina in iron ore sinter on its mineralogy, reducibility index (RI), reduction disintegration index (RDI), physical breakdown (AI and TI), and production properties (coke breeze rate) were examined. It was found that the mineralogy of iron sinter can more easily be predicted from its chemical composition than from the RI, RDI, AI or TI. Anticipating the consequence that varying amounts of MgO and SiO2would have on sinter properties is complex, and not necessarily predictable. High concentrations of Al2O3in the sinter result in high concentrations of the SFCA phase, but with drastically deteriorated properties. This study also confirmed that the form in which fluxes are added to the raw material sinter mixture affects the mineralogy and properties of the produced sinter.

During the past three and a half years considerable improvement in the techniques of solution extraction of salt has been made by the use of wells which are cross-connected by hydraulic fracture at the base of the salt. Fracture is initiated by the application of hydraulic pressure. Underreaming and perforating techniques are used to control initiation. The fracture is then extended by continuous pumping until a pressure communication is obtained. Pressure communication is followed by washing-through to obtain a low-pressure connection. Well construction using non-shrinking cements that will bond with the salt and with associated strata is essential to the process. The connecting procedure described permits solution to attack the salt deposit from its base upward, thereby permitting greater recovery, fewer well repairs, better saturation of brine, and overall economy of development and operation. The fracture method of cross-connection requires special pumping of the fluid and is limited by present experience to initial well spacings up to about 1200 feet. The method has been used in bedded salts and is applicable for wells in salt domes. Since spring of 1956, new developnents in salt extraction wells have followed procedures substantially different from those in prior use. Although multiple well systems, connected either by the natural consequence of the solution process or by undercutting under protective pads, have been used previously, the past three and a half years have brought about new designs and new operation procedures based on cross-connection of the wells using hydraulic fracture. To date these techniques have been applied largely in the bedded salt deposits of Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, West Virginia, and New York. To the writers' knowledge they have not been used in salt dome wells. The methods have not yet been in use for a sufficient period to permit any statistical comparison with the older methods. It is evident from experience to date that the methods result in higher recoveries, lower capital and operating costs, better saturation of produced brine, reduced well maintenance and repair, and in considerably fewer production units to insure

Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. Near Bunker, Mo., in the New Lead Belt, Ozark Lead Co. operates a 6000 tpd lead-zinc mine. Mined ore is transported to the surface in three mechanized and automated steps. The mine is developed by a rectangular-shaped sublevel haulage drift 15 ft high by 28 ft wide, driven on strike below the ore zones. Ore transfer raises were driven from the sublevel at locations near the shaft, 1500 ft distant, and on subsequent 1000 ft centers. These 6 x 5-ft raises are slashed to obtain maximum storage below dump points. These dump points are located on each mining level and are of steel and concrete construction. Spiral 12 X 24-ft inclines driven from the sub-level provide access to these levels for equipment and mine utilities.

The project consisted of filling an abandoned underground limestone mine to facilitate construction of a new entrance ramp to I-470 in Lee?s Summit, Missouri. Due to collapse of mined areas near the project site, design included determination of the limits of remediation for the project and minimum construction requirements for mine infilling. The Judy Company, contractor selected for the mine infilling, experimented in the laboratory with several grout mixes to determine the appropriate mix for the project. Infilling was accomplished from the ground surface, and camera observation was used to monitor the barrier wall construction and infilling process. It was discovered that some of the mapped rooms were larger and some were smaller than indicated on the construction plan.

FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations reluted to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 3’% to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 1% sulfur.

Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand/shale ratio, and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley, and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam conglomerate units are discussed.From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature, was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin.The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, supplied most of the coarse detritus (including the conglomerates) to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern- each show development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure.Evidence of ill situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.The unusual character of this coal basin, in particular the very coarse units, is stressed, despite the presence of many "normal "coal basin features.

The ever-increasing pressure on the profit margins of ferro-chrome producers and the gradual depletion of deposits of rich hard lumpy chrome ores calls for the ferrochrome industry to maximise the use of fine fractions of concentrates and friable chromite ores. Zimbabwe is endowed with huge deposits of refractory and friable ores that occur on and off the Great Dyke complex. The conventional metallurgical process of smelting of chromite ores in submerged arc furnaces is favoured by the use of refractory hard lumpy ores. The requirement to use all lumpy ore has been circumvented to a large extent at Zimbabwe Alloys. The use of briquetted chrome ore fines in the production of Ferrosilicon Chrome and High Carbon Ferrochrome has yielded positive results over a period in excess of twenty-five years. Of the three industrially used methods of agglomeration of chromite ores; sintering, pelletisation and briquetting, briquetting is preferred because the other two are associated with higher capital and operational cost. Zimbabwe Alloys has developed operational and technical expertise on the briquetting and utilisation of chromite ore fines and concentrates. Variations in the quality of available chromite ore fines imply that their amenability to briquetting is a dynamic problem. Appropriate briquetting parameters to guarantee quality briquettes are essential to the successful use of briquetted chromite ore fines. In developing a technology for briquetting of chromite ores, it is important not only to study the mineralogical and grain-size characteristics of the chromite ore fines but also to make an informed choice of the type and quantity of the binder and the conditions for producing a physically and chemically competent green and cured briquette. This paper discusses Zimbabwe Alloys' experience on the briquetting process and the advantages derived in the smelting of the briquetted chromite ore fines in comparison to the use of conventional lumpy chromite ore with respect to improvements in chromium recovery and as a consequence related efficiencies and unit cost of production.
