Ion-exchange fibres (IEF) were prepared by the ir­radiation grafting of styrene onto polypropylene, which was then subsequently functionalized. Strong- and weak-base exchangers were prepared and evaluated Tor their ability to extract gold cyanide selectively. The IEF prepared had loading capacities similar to those of the corresponding resins and they had good selectivities for gold cyanide when contacted with a mixed metal-cyanide solution. The expected advantage of IEF over granular exchangers, that of faster kinetics, was illustrated. The strong-base Iibre in particular seemed to be very effective for the extraction of gold cyanide from dilute solutions such as return-dam waters.

The term "refractory gold ores" refers to a wide number of ore types which are not readily amenable to direct cyanidation. A number of processes have been used commercially, and a number of others have been proposed and in many cases pilot tested. The selection of the appropriate process for an ore should not be arbitrary. Ore grade may preclude some processes, but a good understanding of the ore mineralogy can guide the selection. Many present gold operations and many potential gold operations have faced or are facing problems with refractory gold mineralization. We at Hazen Research have had the opportunity to perform bench testwork and in some cases, pilot plant testing on a number of refractory ores. The data included in this paper are excerpted from the testing of fifteen ores which cover a wide range of mineralogical compositions. This paper is not intended to be a treatise on the processing of refractory gold ores. In many of these gold projects, not all of the standard process alternatives were evaluated, nor was adequate mineralogical work performed. Such is the dilemma of contract research. "If I believe that I don't need it, why should I pay to have it done." The intent of this presentation, therefore, is to show how different ores respond to the various processes, and to demonstrate that one must have an open mind when developing a process for a specific refractory gold ore.

From some of the largest tunnel projects in the some of the most vibrant cities, to smaller projects in remote corners of the globe, the Robbins Co. announced two tunneling projects in which its tunnel boring machines will be used. Robbins earth pressure balance (EPB) machines undercut Downtown Zhengzhou. Zhengzhou, a city of 7 million people, is set to become a crossroads for rail commerce in China. The country?s future main routes, traveling between Beijing and Guangzhou (North-South), and between Xuzhou and Lanzhou (East-West), will intersect in the city. The plan includes up to four rail lines in Zhengzhou itself, which will eventually link up to the national lines. Excavation of Zhengzhou Metro?s new Line 1 tunnels began on Sept. 28, 2010, when the first of two 6.3-m (20.7-ft) diameter Robbins earth pressure balance (EPB) machines was launched from a 16-m- (52-ft-) deep shaft.

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

The accurate prediction of mine profitability is essential for success in the present minerals market as is the ability to quantify the influence/of variations in revenues and costs on cash flow. A menu based spreadsheet template has been developed to determine annual cash flow, maintain depreciation schedules, and estimate labor and operating expenses. Sensitivity analyses may be conducted to determine the effect of productivity upon mining costs and the effect of selling price escalation upon rate of return. The advantage of this approach is that it can be used by a wide variety of professionals without extensive computer experience.

FMC Gold's Paradise Peak Mine, located 13 km (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became operational in April of 1986. Shortly thereafter heap leach testwork began on sub mill grade ore. Presently, testwork continues in combination with production size heaps that account for approximately 6% of total gold production at Paradise Peak.

DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. Nevada Goldfields' Aurora Mine consists of a 270 mtpd (300 tpd) precious metals mining and milling facility located 28 miles southwest of Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada and lies within five kilometers of the Nevada-California border. (Figure 1) Ore production presently is derived 85% from an open pit source with the balance from underground. The Aurora Mill is a compact conventional cyanide plant utilizing a carbon-in-leach extraction process followed by stripping of loaded carbon and electrowinning at Nevada Goldfields Kingston Mine, located near Austin, Nevada. Production commenced in December 1987 and annual gold production is currently 20,000 troy ounces of gold and 22,000 troy ounces of silver per annum, produced at an average cash cost of $178 per ounce of gold. Tailings handling at, Aurora was originally accomplished using a belt filter press producing a solid cake that was then transported to a final storage area. Although overall operating costs at the mine were' in the lower percentile of producing gold mines, the tailings handling portion of the operating costs were inordinately high.

Assumptions about future commodity prices need to be made with close regard to the purposes for which they are being used. Prices generated for financial planning or trading purposes are unlikely to be suitable for the longer run purposes of project evaluation and reserve estimation. In this latter context, price assumptions need to be realistic, stable and rooted in a rigorous fundamental analysis of long run industry drivers. Amongst the factors to be considered in such analysis are price history, production costs and structural dynamics. It is also important that prices adopted are consistent with other information being used by a company in its decision-making.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is designing new outlet facilities for Lake Mathews, including a junction shaft, connecting tunnels, and an ear-shore outlet tower. Since Lake Mathews must remain operational during construction, groundwater inflow potential is a concern. This paper describes the challenges and methods used to investigate rock mass and groundwater conditions at an operational reservoir, where offshore and onshore geotechnical exploration was performed. Several investigative and analytical methods were used to characterize rock mass and groundwater conditions, including rock coring, downhole geophysical and video surveys, hydraulic conductivity testing, automated groundwater level monitoring, and laboratory testing.

A native sulfur mineralization associated with pyrite and iron oxides containing 20% iron was quarried in Calimani Mountains, Oriental Carpathians. The wastes resulted from this exploitation activity, with a volume of 33 millions m3, were stored in four dumps while the wastes resulted from ore processing using flotation and the subsequent treatment were disposed of in a settlement pond. The investigations carried out in the entire mining area focused on the following two aspects: - the impact of environmental factors mainly on the hydrographic network; - the characterization all pollution sources, namely dumps, leachates and the quarry and the assessment of acidic drainage generation. The total sulfur content of the excavated ore was 3.8% while in dumps it ranged between 0.54 and 1.06%. Analysis of samples collected along the hydrographic network, draining the mining area, resulted in pH values ranging between 1.7 and 2.83 as well as high concentration of iron (4525 mg/L to 1.6 mg/L), copper (1.87 mg/L to 0.04 mg/L) and zinc (13.13 mg/L to 0.3 mg/L). Samples from the quarry, the dumps and the tailings pond were analyzed in order to deter-mine: - the maximum potential acidity (MPA); - the acid neutralization capacity (ANC); - the net acid production potential (NAPP).

These are as follows: Step A - Geological Mapping This step covers the basic geological mapping of the country at scales of 1/250, 000 up to l/50, 000. This step eliminates territory and directs the exploration teams to the areas of potential interest. Step B Prospecting This step includes all phases from detailed geology through geophysics and drilling up to the point of proving that an economic ore body exists. Step C - Mine Development This is the expensive step, involving the creation of the mine, including shaft-sinking, ore treatment plant, etc.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., generates a jarosite waste at its Risdon smelter. Since 1974 this waste has been disposed of at sea off south-east Tasmania. As part of a monitoring programme prescribed by the Australian Government, bottom sediments from the disposal zone are monitored regularly. QEM*SEM image analysis complements conventional chemical analysis, having the ability to partition the occurrence of an element between sediment particles of metallurgical and natural origin. The adaptation of QEM*SEM techniques to the evaluation of bottom sediments provides insight into the fate of the particles of jarosite waste.

Silica in the form of sand and sandstone is one of the most common, and at the same time, unique industrial minerals. Found in every rock type of every geologic age and virtually everywhere in the world, silica is used in products that touch just about every aspect of daily life. Imagine a world in the 1990s without computer chips, fiber optics, or glass, and you have just begun to understand how important silica is to the quality of life we enjoy. The elements silicon (Si) and oxygen (0) comprise roughly 60% of the earth's lithosphere to a depth of about 16 km. The crystal structure of silicon dioxide consists of one atom of silicon bonded to four surrounding atoms of oxygen to form a three-dimensional network of SiO, tetrahedra. This network makes up the mineral quartz (Murphy and Henderson, 1983), the most common detrital mineral in most sandstones. Quartz is also a major constituent of many igneous and metamorphic rocks and is widespread as a siliceous cementing agent in various rock types. Although quartz is common, sandstones, quartzites, and pegmatites and the unconsolidated sediments derived from them that have a silica content high enough and pure enough to meet today's market demands for quality and consistency are not common. USES AND SPECIFICATIONS Silica sand that is mined and processed for industrial uses must conform to the chemical and physical specifications set by customers. In the United States almost half of the silica sand produced is used in the manufacture of glass. Other important products include foundry sand, ground silica, blasting sand, and fracturing sand. Glass Sand Silica is the principal glass-forming oxide in a glass batch. Glass manufacturers develop model specifications for each source of silica sand used. These specifications broadly define the limits and ranges for chemical and physical properties of the sand and are used by the manufacturer in calculating the desired batch mix or formula. Some specifications may be critical to a glassmaker and require very stringent limits on the quantity of impurities in the sand. For example, the total iron oxide content of a batch is extremely crucial when making white or flint glasses (Mills, 1983). Iron is present in almost every raw material used in a glass batch and must be carefully controlled in order to obtain a consistent color in the finished product. It is difficult, however, for a raw material supplier to tightly control the chemistry of a naturally occurring material such as silica sand. To a great extent the commercial quality of a sand is determined by its geologic history. Realizing this, glass producers tailor their model specifications to each source of approved material. In general, a glass company is concerned most about the consistency of raw materials on a day-to-day basis. Soda-lime-silica glass was the earliest type of manmade glass (Baker-Can, 1967) and still accounts for most of the glass manufactured for commercial use today (Mills, 1983). It is relatively easy to melt and shape and is less expensive per ton to produce than most other types of glass (Baker-Can, 1967). Soda-lime-silica glass is used in fabricating containers, flat glass products, incandescent and fluorescent lamps, glass fiber, and many other products. Heavy minerals such as ilmenite, leucoxene, kyanite, and zircon are impurities on which strict limits are placed for a glass batch. Because of their refractory nature they either do not melt or only partially melt, which results in stones or feathers in finished glass. Aluminosilicates such as kyanite also contribute unwanted alumina to the batch as they partially melt. Limits are especially rigid for refractory mineral grains coarser than 0.60 to 0.425 mm (30 to 40 mesh). [Tables 1 and 2] present typical specifications for silica sand used in flat glass and container glass products. The percentages shown represent an average of many companies7 specifications.
