The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. Attendees at December?s Arizona SME Section Conference at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort outside of Tucson, AZ were feeling optimistic and ready to get to work after a year of steady growth and recovery in the mining industry. During the two-day event (Dec. 5-6, 2010) and the preceding American Mining Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony, the focus was on copper, worldwide population growth and regulatory pressures, with several smart new projects featured alongside updates to traditional large-scale copper development projects. Keynote speaker Timothy Snider, chair of the University of Arizona?s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, hit the mood of cautious optimism when he analyzed the global demand for resources, using the case example of copper. Over the next 20 years, he said, the world?s population is expected to grow to 9.2 billion and the average annual per capita copper use is expected to rise from 2.2 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb). The increase in demand will provide tremendous opportunity for mining companies, he said, but cautioned that the opportunities are balanced by negative influences on demand and pressures on supply. While demand for copper is currently growing, Snider noted that there were significant downward pressures on demand as well. These included a western world that is overbuilt, in-creasing use of substitute materials in new construction and the rise of wireless devices. He also noted new regulatory pressures, and pointed out that resource development now had to occur within a context of sustainability on several levels.

Dispatching systems have attracted considerable attention in the last years due to substantial gains in productivity achieved through their implementation. These systems will be extensively used in the future by mine operators as a means of optimizing productivity. This paper describes a computer simulation model designed to study the feasibility of continuously dispatching trucks in open-pit mines based on different operating procedures. The system developed is semi-automated and performs an active role by suggesting to the dispatcher the best assignment according to each specific circumstance. It is modeled based on an advance-clock increment to reduce computing time and allows the insertion of heuristic dispatching policies and equipment real-locations when breakdowns occur. Dispatching procedures taking into account long-term production objectives are considered in system development.

This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

Skam deposits considered as porphyry copper deposits have been classified into three basic prospecting models: (I) the skam deposit associated with a mineralized intrusive (Pima-Mission), (2) the deposit associated with a barren igneous stock (Ertsberg), and (3) mineralized rock that seems to have no clear association with apluton (Phoenix). Pima-Mission, Christmas, and many other copper-bearing skarns developed in carbonate sequences near mineralized intrusives form an important part of the deposit. Historically, copper derived from the mineralized intrusion accounts for less than half of the metal produced by most porphyry mines, as most mineralization occurs in the intruded rocks. Skam mineralization is an important part of wall-rock metal deposition, because carbonate sequences are preferentially replaced by sulfide and skarn minerals. Exploration for skam mineralization is an important phase of porphyry copper exploration. Impure carbonate beds can become better host rocks for skam deposits than pure carbonates, and these in particular should be included in porphyry-exploration programs if the impure strata are cut by the stock. Skam deposits can also form near stocks that are barren of sulfide. In this model, the two best ore guides are strata favorable for mineralization (usually impure carbonate beds) and the intrusive contact. Faults can also act as important ore controls. Some skarn deposits form that have no clear genetic connection with a stock, although intrusive rocks are known in the district. In such cases, the best ore guides are strata and district-wide faulting. Dikes and sills are also common and mineralization can locally prefer their contacts even though the igneous rocks are barren. Skam minerals are influenced by the chemical composition of the carbonate. Forsterite, brucite, tremolite, and talc are common in skams developed in dolomitic beds. Skams derived from calcic beds often contain wollastonite, calcite, stilbite, or idocrase. Diopside, however, is a common accompaniment of copper sulfide in skam regardless of the original composition of the carbonates. Tremolite and possibly other amphiboles and chlorite can occur significantly in the zinc-lead portion of skams. Gamets occur in magnetite, copper, and zinc-lead zones of skams, but are not as diagnostic as diopside for the copper zone or tremolite for the zinc-lead zone. A general desciption of skam-deposit mineralogy can be used to construct prospecting models of porphyry copper skams. An abstract of such a description follows.

JOHN HAMRIC: Our next topic leader is David Huth, superintendent of sulfuric power generation, DAP, and shipping for IMC-Agrico, Nichols Plant, Mulberry, Florida. With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? But where are all those people who are going to make this rejuvenation and corporate renaissance possible? Many of them are gone-lost in downsizing, synergies, and rightsizings

Introduction Men like physical power because it gives control over nature and over other men. Physical power comes in two common forms: explosive and non-explosive. In both forms, the most powerful devices yet invented make use of nuclear energy: on the one hand, the hydrogen or fusion bomb, and, on the other hand, a nuclear power plant. For some nations, nuclear power offers a measure of independence not otherwise available in a time of diminishing and unevenly allocated fossil fuels. Consequently, it has great attraction. Unfortunately, the application of nuclear energy (especially fission energy) to either explosive or electrical power entails a singular risk, that of injury from ionizing radiation, both natural and induced; this risk is found in all stages of the nuclear-fuel cycle, from mining of fissionable materials to the disposal of wastes produced in the "burning" of nuclear fuels. The health costs of nuclear power were not fully assessed in the early stages of the development of nuclear technology and some of them were not properly guarded against, either in the USA, which led the world into the nuclear age, or in Canada, which followed an independent path. What I shall do in this paper is to sketch the history of nuclear regulation in our two countries, to point out what I consider similarities and differences, and to suggest that regulatory history, as perceived by a concerned public, has a great deal to do with what is possible today and probable tomorrow, in other words, with public acceptance or rejection of the nuclear option. The U.S. situation As we sow, so shall we reap. In the USA, further expansion of the nuclearpower industry has been almost stymied by government actions that reflect mounting public concern. There is no national storage facility for spent reactor fuel and it has been decided not to reprocess it; consequently, existing power plants are about to choke on their own wastes. Since the Three Mile Island accident, no new nuclear plants have received operating licenses, although several are ready to start up. The uncertainty of future government action has caused the abandonment of plans for a number of new nuclear plants. In addition, many research projects related to medicine and agriculture, which produce low-level radioactive wastes, are about to be shut down for lack of licensed disposal facilities. Introduction The success of in situ leaching depends upon: • maintaining adequate injection and recovery flow capacities in wells, and • distributing leach solution effectively to contact and leach ore minerals within the target zone. Solution balance is an important indicator of the capability of a particular in situ hydrologic design to efficiently and effectively control and distribute leach solution within the target ore zone. As part of ongoing hydrological investigations into in situ leaching, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is studying factors affecting solution balance in an unsaturated copper ore deposit at the Cyprus Casa Grande Mine. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of hydrogeologic features and in situ operating conditions on changes, during leaching, in: • solution storage within the deposit, and • solution balance. At the Casa Grande Mine, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility, solution balance estimates are obtained for 10 selected intervals during 17 months of leaching under a variety of well configurations, pressures and flow conditions. Operational and geological description The Casa Grande Mine is located 32 miles south of Casa Grande, AZ. The mining area is within the Casa Grande Deposit, a porphyry copper stock consisting primarily of an intensely-fractured, granodiorite cap overlying a copper sulfide base. As a result of mine dewatering activity, unsaturated conditions existed in the deposit prior to leaching (Schmidt et al., 1990; Friedel and Schmidt, 1991). No groundwater was present in any of the in-situ-leaching, test-facility wells after drilling and prior to leach solution injection. Also, no ground water seepage occurs in the test-facility drift. The Casa Grande, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility consists of 58 injection and recovery wells collared in an underground drift. The wells were drilled at various angles into the granodiorite deposit in a series of 15 divergent fans (Fig. 1). The fans are 12.5 ft apart and lie parallel to one another between the 900- and 1100-level drifts. Each fan contains three to five wells drilled at angles ranging from 6° to 89° from the horizontal. The wells can operate in an injection or a recovery mode. Currently, 36 flow sensors and 28 pressure transducers (part of a hydrologic, data acquisition system) are used to continuously monitor injection-well flow rates and pressures.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Sample collection, preparation and analysis are all steps in a single process designed to provide information about a much larger amount of material than the sample itself. For example, information about the ash content of a unit train load of coal may be derived from a single, relatively small sample of perhaps a few hundred pounds (liters) extracted from the entire shipment. These three steps can be thought of as links in a chain, allowing the simple analogy that the strength of the chain, or, in other words, the value of the information is only as strong as the weakest link. Sample collection, discussed in Part 1 of this chapter, is critical because analytical procedures can do no more than reveal the characteristics of the sample presented to the laboratory. If that sample does not properly represent the population to be characterized, neither will the analysis of that sample. Sample preparation is also a critical part of the chain. Any change in the nature of a sample between the time it is collected and the time it is analyzed will appear to reflect the nature of the population. For example, sample preparation procedures that allow air to partially dry the coal sample before reaching the laboratory will cause the sample analysis to indicate a lower moisture content than the sample originally had. Other changes can be more subtle. Second only to moisture loss, oxidation reactions generally cause the greatest problems. Oxidation of a coal sample can alter surface properties, changing flotation response. In extreme cases, combustion parameters, such as caking or agglomerating properties or mineral composition, such as pyrite content, can change. Water samples can also be altered by oxidation. For example, ferrous iron can oxidize to ferric iron, possibly changing water quality parameters such as pH. Sample analysis, the subject of Part 2 of this chapter, is the final link in the chain. Obviously, no laboratory procedure can correct for problems created by improper sample collection and preparation. At the same time, poor analytical techniques will create incorrect information about the total amount of coal from which the sample was extracted (the population) in the same manner as improper sample collection and preparation. The key to gaining correct information about the population is to view these three steps as parts of a single process. Following proper techniques through only one or two steps of the process will not produce accurate information.

It is ap-parent from observing the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that progress is being made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. Examples of this are the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer control devices, the modification of mechanical flotation cell designs, the introduction of column cells, better reagent dosage control, blending of feed ores, increasing attention to coarse and fine particle separations, the successful introduction of new frother chemistries, etc.

The demand for good white minerals for many industries including paint and plastics have made it necessary to import high grade industrial minerals from various parts of the world. Some of the calcium carbonate, barite and talc minerals are from China, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. These materials can be processed by custom processors. The custom processor can provide a service to the Industrial Mineral owner. The imported materials can arrive in various feed sizes from lumps (3"-6") down to 325 mesh. The materials can also be in various size shipments or container loads. The economics for importing should be investigated thoroughly. The two factors just mentioned can influence the quantity of material to be processed. These two factors can also influence the total cost for each end product.

Four Ca-bentonitic clays from Alabama were evaluated for use in Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) or Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer suspensions. The viscosity and gel strength of suspensions prepared with different proportions of a Western bentonite clay and sodium exchanged Alabama clays, were measured as a function of clay content and dispersant concentration. The results obtained suggested that three of the Alabama Ca-bentonites would replace about 40% of the more expensive Western bentonite in UAN and DAP fertilizer suspensions. The performance of the Na-modified clays, prepared according to the TVA soda ash method, was as good or even better than those observed for the Mg-, Na/Mg-or K-modified clays. The TVA clay modification procedure appears to be reliable and cost effective.

In the last three years there have been four uncontrolled heating events in mines that have been attributed to the use of polyurethane foam as a void fill product. These heating events are due to the exothermic reaction that occurs during application of these polymeric products. These events led the Mine Safety and Health Administration to issue a safety alert on polyurethane products used in void filling and ground consolidation in mining, with the goal of educating the mining community about this potential hazard. This paper provides an overview of various types of polymeric products and best practices, the factors that contributed to the heating events, and case studies involving polymeric products.

Suboptimal decisions introduced during the mine planning process are generally a consequence of both a myopic view of planning objectives as well as time and resources available to convert longer-term plans into execution plans. Erosion of strategic mine plan value in conversion to execution plans is likely to amount to billions of dollars each year. When integrated with operations data feeds, simulation and optimization tools can be used to preserve the value in the strategic mine plan. Optimization models are capable of both automating production of execution plans and improving performance. This reduces the manual burden of revising plans while improving alignment with long-term production objectives. Simulation models can also support the process of developing effective execution plans by providing forward visibility of mine operations performance. They can also be used to test the robustness of optimized execution plans and response to operational variability and disturbances.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Since 1992 the Grasberg Mine, located in the remote regions of Indonesia, has utilized the Modular Mining System. Over the last several years, major steps have been taken to maximize this productivity enhancement system. These steps include; the Automated Lineup, the Linear Program upgrade, tracking of Mean Time Between Failure, a MEDS system interface, a VMIS system interface, and implementation of the new Graphical Operator Interface Console with Global Positioning, This application of new technology and innovation has lead to improved performance, understanding and reporting, as well as the quality of the Indonesian Engineers. These efforts have contributed 10 Grasberg achieving one of the lowest mining costs in the copper industry.

Tunnel approach structures situated in slow moving earth flows are subjected to significant earth pressures. The authors have developed a system, utilizing collapsible concrete columns, that limits such loading. The system uses an array of collapsible concrete columns in front of the structure to absorb downslope movement and limit-imposed loads. This concept has been modelled using 3D FEM analyses and a rudimental lab test. For implementation, the collapsible columns would be prefabricated in strengths to mimic the soil strength profile. This concept has merit, and analytical results demonstrate that collapsible columns are a viable means to limit loading.

Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

Differential reduction and expansion or shrinkage of hematite under the influence of intimately associated foreign oxides may be a source of stress formation and sinter degradation during blast furnace reduction. To study specific effects, synthetically pre-pared hematite powder evenly doped with 1% by weight of several elements present as oxides, was pressed into tablets and sintered at high temperature prior to reduction. Continuous thermo-gravimetric and dilatometric analyses were per-formed on the sintered tablets as these were being subjected to reduction under simulated blast furnace time/temperature/gas composition conditions up to 1183 K. These findings were coupled with observations on the microstructure of tablets removed from various stages of the reduction process.
