With the emergence ofbiooxidation as a viable process for the pre treatment of refractory gold ores, so have the number of publica­tions on this topic increased dramatically. To a novice in the field of biooxidation, the infonnation presented is often confusing and sometimes even incorrect. Infonnation has also been published that is misleading in that it highlights a particular feature of a process that is either totally irrelevant or of no consequence to the ultimate goal viz. achieving the maximum economical gold recovery. To assist a potential user of biooxidation in evaluating the available published infonnation some guidelines or considera­tions for some of the more important aspects are given, as well as some extracts from publications that demonstrate the manner in which information has been presented.

Common clay includes a wide variety of clay and other fine- grained rocks that are used in many ways. These clays are some- times classified as miscellaneous clay and shale. Most products made from them are fired and include such things as structural and face brick, drain tile, vitrified pipe, quarry tile, flue tile, conduit, pottery, stoneware, and roofing tile. Very large tonnages of these materials are bloated by firing to form lightweight aggregate, and large quantities are used in making portland cement (see the specific chapters in this volume). Uses not requiring firing of a finished product include filler for paint and other products and shale and clay used for packing dynamite in blastholes and for plugging oil and gas wells that are no longer in use.

As free milling oxide gold ore reserves are depleted, more mining companies are having to evaluate the available alternatives for treating refractory deposits. The selection of a treatment process can be very difficult; and, despite the claims of their respective proponents, there is no one process that will continuously prove superior. Selection of the optimum process for an individual deposit is contingent on the size of the deposit, the grade of the deposit and the refractory nature of the ore. Since extensive metallurgical test programs are usually required to determine the optimum extraction process, an inappropriate initial selection may prove costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the steps involved in evaluating a refractory ore in order to expedite the evaluation of the required process through the feasibility study stage.

The lysimeter is a useful tool for evaluating the performance of mine waste covers or liners. A major problem with its application is the possibility for preferential flow into or away from the lysimeter, if the lysimeter soil is finer or coarser than the barrier soil or sub-base soil. Analysis of a field lysimeter using a two-dimensional unsaturated-saturated liquid flow model suggested that preferential flow would occur and little or no water would be collected; however, in the field, the lysimeters collected significant amounts of water. A similar discrepancy was found between the observed and predicted water balance of a simple laboratory test simulating the lysimeter design. Vapour flow and partial flow, two phenomena not generally simulated in conventional flow models, are possible explanations for the difference between field and laboratory observations.

Removal of moisture from fine (minus 28 mesh) dean coal to 20 percent or lower level is difficult using the conventional vacuum dewatering technique. High pressure filtration technique provides an avenue for obtaining low moisture in fine clean coal. This paper describes a couple of novel approaches for dewatering of fine clean coal using pressure filtration which provides much lower moisture in fine clean coal than that obtained using conventional pressure filter. The approaches involve (a) split stream dewatering and (b) addition of paper pulp to the coal slurry. For Pittsburgh No. 8 coal slurry, split stream dewatering at 400 mesh provided filter cake containing 12.9 percent moisture compared to 24.9 percent obtained on the feed material. The addition of paper pulp to the slurry provided filter cake containing about 17 percent moisture.

Modes of microbial attack of metal carbonates, metal silicates, metal oxides and metal sulfides are summarized. The current status of microbial redox mechanisms, whereby metals in metal oxides and sulfides are mobilized, is discussed. Opposing theories of a single mode of attack involving interaction with a microbially produced reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase and of dual modes of attack involving a reaction requiring physical contact between microbe and mineral surface on the one hand and microbial production of a reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase that reacts with the mineral on the other hand are considered. No one mode when finally completely unraveled should be expected to fit all cases. Some biochemical, electronmicroscopic and spectrophotometric approaches for elucidation of missing details of different modes are suggested. As time progresses, new concerns regarding long-term post-mining effects are identified, increasing mine closure costs. Regulators responding to public interest must take a “worst case” view and require post-closure monitoring or remediation processes. Although closure costs depend on the size and type of operation, general cost categories are defined, and median values (per acre, or per unit of production) are identified. Closure cost categories, as well as amounts, have increased with time. Except for increased efficiency in earth-moving and water management (surface or subsurface), there are no apparent offsets to a steady rise in closure costs. When the historical trend of closure costs is considered, it is probable that additional cost categories will come into being. For mine operators, the challenge will be to anticipate them and devise cost-effective remedies.

The Buick concentrator represents state-of-the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry, but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries; lead concentrate grade; and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs, and personnel. A detailed description of the concentrator, along with a history of the process control development and a more in-depth discussion of the control strategies implemented at Buick can be found in the references. (The Buick flowsheet is depicted in Fig. 1).

At a mine in central PA, high horizontal stresses have caused long running roof falls resulting in hazardous conditions for the miners and the premature abandonment of panels. Because of these conditions, the mine requested assistance of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in utilizing the "advance and relieve" method to mitigate the affects of horizontal stress on the mine roof. "Advance and relieve" mining involves the removal of a pillar or a portion of a pillar during development, thereby creating a cave along one side of the panel. Following cave development, the horizontal stress is relieved over the workings adjacent to the cave in the active panel. The mine has used this system in three panels with a significant reduction in stress damage and no large roof falls.

The study of minero-petrographical characteristics and the subsequent textural and structural characterization of an ore mineral represents the first step of each industrial processing whose aim is the beneficiation of each valuable mineral phase present inside the ore. Analytical, mineralogical and petrographical, chemical and multispectral image analyses based investigations, applied to eclogitic ore samples deriving form "in situ" sampling campaigns, were applied. These procedures enabled to point out some textural and structural aspects characteristics of ore litotypes belonging to eclogitic-amphibolitic dikes. Such dikes are characterized by a paragenesis constituted mainly by siliceous gangue and accessory "useful titanium minerals" as rutile [TiO2], "pseudolilmenite", ilmenite [FeTiO3] and sphene [CaTiSiO5]. In the beneficiation process applied to ore s is of preliminary importance to establish a strategy in order to obtain a recovery of high quality "mono-minerals concentrates" as rutile, "pseudolimenite", ilmenite and phene. To reach this goal is thus necessary to develop a preliminary study of the textural, structural, petrochemical and minerochemical characteristics of the samples. Different ore samples (eclogitic rocks), resulting from sampling campaigns carried out in the Piampaludo area (Sassello district: Savona, Northern Italy), are examined.

Through the USGS's National Coal Availability program, coal resource appraisals have been completed for three 7.5-minute quadrangles (Willow Crossing, Colstrip East, Colstrip SW) in the Powder River Basin area of southeastern Montana. Available coal reserves (original reserves minus tonnages affected by current restrictions) vary from 44 to 70 percent of the original reserves. Major restrictions impacting each area also vary. In each area, one or two beds contain most of the reserves, but up to eleven beds contain available coal. The main beds in completed studies are the Knobloch, Rosebud, Sawyer and Flowers-Goodale. Three additional areas (six 7.5-minute quadrangles) are in preparation.

Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). IARC found sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of crystalline silica in animals and limited evidence in humans. Perlite is not listed as a carcinogen by OSHA or the National Toxicology Program.

China was once deficient in nickel and almost totally reliant on imports for its domestic needs, supplies mainly coming from Canada since the ending of imports from the U.S.S.R. in early 1960's. However, the discovery of the huge nickel/copper sulphide deposit in Jin Chuan, Gansu Province of northwestern China in late 1950's and its development and construction through the 1960's and 19701s, have much improved China's domestic nickel position. In 1985. China's nickel production has exceeded 27.000 tons, compared with only 7,000 tons in 1977. Today, Jin Chuan Nonferrous Metals Company operates two underground mines and a small open- pit; owns China's largest reserves of nickel and platinum, and the second largest reserves of copper and cobalt; and has become the most important subsidiary of China National Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNNC) which was established in April 1983. The Jin Chuan nickel-copper mines are located in Jin Chang City, Gansu Province, 1,700 km west of Beijing in the People's Republic of China (Figure 1). It is believed that Jin Chuan mines have the second largest nickel reserves in the world, after Sudbury basin, Canada. The deposits are situated on the north slope of the Longshu Mountains, 50 km north of Jin Chang City, and border on the southmost edge of the Gobi Desert plateau. The deposits were discovered in 1958. The total strike length of mineralized zones was approximately 6.5 km long, which was divided into four mining areas by faults (Figure 2). The Longshu underground mine of No. 1 mining area began development in 1959, with full ore production capacity of 1,000 TPD. The open-pit, also in No. 1 mining area, which was brought into operation in 1966 with ore output of 5,500 TPD, was closed down in 1982. The East Extension of the open-pit was put into operation in 1983; present production capacity is about 2,200 TPD. Nickel production of Jin Chuan mines in recent years, and production capacity of each mining operation, are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

"Location. The Cuyuna iron district extends from the region of Kimberly, near the Center of Aitkin County, Minnesota, south-westward through Deerwood, Ironton, and Brainerd, across Crow Wing and Todd counties, across the Mississippi River, and for an unknown distance farther southwest in the same direction. It is known that the Huronian rocks, in which the ores of the Cuyuna district are found, reappear near the western border f Minnesota, but no ores have been found in this region. The district has a length of more than sixty miles, but the more important portion as now known 'is confined to Crow Wing County in an area which is less than thirty miles in its longest dimension. The commercial headquarters for the district are in the city f Brainerd, on the Mississippi River.History. The discovery of iron ore in the Cuyuna district was accomplished with no aid from surface outcrops, but solely through the use of the dip needle. The mantle of glacial drift overlying the iron formation varies from twenty-five to 359 feet in thickness, and it was by means f the magnetic attraction of the iron bearing rocks that their presence was discovered with the dip needle by Cuyler Adams, about 1895. The general geologic map of Minnesota, published by the State Geological Survey in 1909, showed the extension of the Huronian rocks of the Mesabi district passing through this area. Two years later, Leith published a sketch showing the hypothetic extension of the iron bearing formation through the same area. The first drilling was done in 1903, near Deerwood, Minn., by Cuyler Adams, and exploration was continued to the present time in increasing amount. The Northern Pacific Railway extends throughout the length of the district and affords an easy outlet for the ores. The Soo Line Railway completed a spur into the district in 1910. Both roads carry the ore to the docks at Supe¬rior, Wis., the average haul being about ninety miles. Shipments began in 1911, the Kennedy mine being the first producer. By 1918, the number of shippers reached twenty-seven, with a total output of nearly two and one-half million tons for that year."

Development quarterly mine plans is generally time-consuming and requires consideration for many operational constraints and competing objectives. With lengthy turnaround times, there is often limited opportunity to adjust the quarterly plan details to account for differences between actual state of the mine operation at the time of execution and expected state at the time that the plan was developed. Actual mining task completion times can vary significantly from the expected task completion times, due to many factors. In the absence of revision to account for differences between the planned and actual state, resource allocations and mining sequences, embodied in the quarterly mine plan may no longer be the best approach at the time of execution to achieve an efficient mining operation. Simulation and optimisation tools can be used to support rapid refinements for development and execution of weekly mine plans. When initialized with an operations data feed to establish the actual state of the mine operation, optimisation models can be used to facilitate both automation and revision of the quarterly plan to produce a weekly or daily plan for execution. This approach can remove much of the manual burden of revision if the existing quarterly plan no longer represents the best approach to meeting production objectives. Following initialisation with mining actuals, simulation models can provide a representation of the range of likely mine operations outcomes. The models can be used to accelerate the planning process by providing visibility of future performance and identifying likely operational issues. They can also be used to test the robustness of the plan with respect to performance variability and response to disturbances. Following identification of issues, simulation models can also be used for evaluating mitigation measures, through automated testing of alternative plans. Integration of mine data feeds with simulation and optimisation tools enables automated optimal responses to variations between the quarterly mine plan and actuals to be tested prior to release of and execution plan and implementation. The use of simulation and optimisation in weekly mine planning will be discussed in this paper with reference to surface mining examples.

Nature of Empirical Calculations The size reduction of large tonnages of ore and rock is an operation of great magnitude. It is a necessary and important part of industry. Its development has been motivated by practical need and has followed the path of an industrial art without much help from theoretical science. Knowledge has been accumulated from experience. Trial and error established the methods; then collected data were tabulated and served as the basis for empirical equations that have been continually modi¬fied and amplified as new data became available. These equations now constitute the bulk of our present knowledge of comminution. There is no accepted scientific theory that is basic to comminution. In electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering, as well as in many other industrial activities, such theories exist and are extremely help¬ful, but rock is essentially heterogeneous, and the zones of weakness that control its breakage are thoroughly diversified. No theory has yet been discovered which can account for the variability of rock, although many attempts have been made. Empirical equations tell nothing of the why of a phenomenon, but if they are properly derived they can tell much about the how. They always represent only an approximation of behavior but never a law. In a proper empirical equation a symbol is assigned for each of the variable quantities that obviously affect the relationship. In a grinding mill these include mill diameter, mill speed, and feed rate among them. In setting up and revising an empirical equation the cardinal princi¬ple in establishing and modifying it is this: any change must be strictly ascribed to the variable which caused it. A useful empirical equation is rendered useless when a change in any convenient coefficient or exponent is made to make it fit a particular set of data, without certainty that the altered coefficient or exponent is the responsible variable in the new data. Such indiscriminate revisions have brought the use of empirical equations into some disrepute. When existing equations are changed to accommodate new data it is a good rule to make a change which gives results intermediate between the new and the old. A halfway point is usually a good choice.

2.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter provides the reader with a sense of how a heap leach project may make an orderly, and hopefully non-traumatic, transition from discovery or acquisition to project construction. In making this transition a project can pass through several project development phases (i.e. ore definition and delineation, conceptual engineering, detailed engineering, and ultimately on to project construction and operation). "Go" or "no go" decisions may occur at any point in each of these phases. The transition from ore definition to detailed engineering should be accomplished via a well thought out program of interdisciplinary studies and an integrated, interdisciplinary project team. This chapter also describes, in general terms, a "roadmap" approach to the project evaluation process that must occur as project planning and development progress. It is the experience of the authors, as well as a myriad of companies who have been through the heap leach project development process, that a systematic approach will save many headaches, and many dollars. In fact, it is safe to say that a project with no formalized system of "objectives setting" and "milestone charting" may well flounder along the way, even if an economic ore body exists. Many papers and technical articles have been written about various aspects of mineral resource appraisal, economic evaluation, and mine development. Most of these invoke the same general philosophy of a systematic approach to project evaluation and development, although methods cited for attaining goals are quite variable. This is undoubtedly appropriate, given the fact that there is great variation in approach to project development (e.g., climatic considerations, ore body size and physical ore characteristics, permitting constraints, etc.). For the purposes of this chapter, two primary sources of information have been used to highlight the "road map" approach previously alluded to. These sources are cited throughout the text as Mackenzie (1980) and Snow and Michel s (1986). A brief summary of each of these sources is provided below: Brian GJ. The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. He had gone on ahead to arrange for our reception Finally a graduate student from Ann Arbor named Steinberg was to go along as Interpreter. The nature of water and clay in carbonate rocks is currently being investigated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by various thermal and sorption techniques. Two basic concepts 'led to the present research. (1) To explain the expansion and contraction on wetting and drying of some unsound argillaceous carbonate rocks, it was postulated that the pore space around each clay particle is such that when water is sorbed by the clay, force is exerted against the pore walls. (2) The clays in expansive rocks are rejected from the growing dolomite crystals during their growth, and form a more or less connected network, thereby becoming "wettable," or available to water. New quantitative cold differential-thermal-analysis (electrocalorimetric) equipment was designed and constructed to check the "limited space" and "wettable clay" concepts and to determine the thermal nature of the transition of water to ice in rocks. This DTA equipment can detect the release of heat in freezing of less than 0.001 per cent water in a rock. Twenty-three rock cores (nine sound and fourteen unsound) and 4 procelain cylinders for standards were studied. In the nine sound rocks and in all the procelain cylinders, the rapid freezing of from 50 to 100 per cent of the water was readily detectable after 7 to 10° C of supercooling. No further freezing could be detected to -20° C. However, in eleven of the fourteen unsound rocks, no freezing was detected to as low as -40° C; in the other three, less than 50 per cent of the water froze. As a check of the DTA measurements, adsorption isotherms were determined for all materials. Calculations of theoretical freezing points for sorbed water again demonstrated that the least sound rocks had the most nonfreezable water. "Frost" sensitivity in these carbonate rocks is, therefore, probably not the result of the force of expansion of water to ice. The disruptive force is believed to result from expansion of sorbed, ordered water on clay surfaces. The relationship between the unfilled rock pores after 24-hour water saturation and the water sorbed at 85 per cent humidity at 30° C (i.e., the theoretical nonfreezable water delineates the sound and unsound carbonate rocks.
