Hydrometallurgical processes are not free of environmental regulations. A clear understanding of the regulations under which the minerals industry operates delineates processing requirements at early stages. This paper deals' with federal environmental regulations with emphasis on the hazardous waste regulations promulgated in May, 1980. The procedure of EP toxicity test and an example of the test are described. Brief account is given of the current trend and future outlook of regulations.

Barite and bentonite are the two principal components of drilling fluid systems used in the petroleum industry for oil and gas well drilling with rotary-type rigs. Approximately 87 percent of the world's annual production of barite is used in drilling applications. Of the worldwide production of bentonite, an estimated 30 percent is used. The drilling fluid, or drilling mud, to which barite and bentonite are added, performs five distinct functions: Lubrication-The liquid phase of the drilling mud lubricates the drill bit, preventing premature failure of the cutting edges and bearings. it also helps to soften the formation being drilled. Cuttings Removal-A mud system must be able to carry rock cuttings broken loose by the bit up to the surface where they can be removed by mechanical or chemical methods. The fluid's ability to perform this function depends upon maintaining a proper balance between the rate of circulation of the fluid and the colloidal properties required to entrain the cuttings in the mud to prevent their settling to the bottom of the hole. Hole Stability-The pressure exerted by the mud against the wall of the bore hole prevents the collapse of the uncased portions of the hole. Downhole Information-The fluid characteristics of the mud should be such that good cuttings samples, cores and electric logs may be obtained to help evaluate a well's productive zones and potential. Control Oil, Gas and Water Flows-It is essential that a drilling fluid offset any pressure from naturally occurring formation fluids in order to prevent a potentially wasteful and dangerous blowout.

Composition of salt in the Permian Flowerpot Shale in northwest Oklahoma suggests that the salt in this formation was deposited in the early phase of solar evaporation. Brine produced through natural dissolution of the subsurface salt has netted very pure brines, with relatively low concentrations of magnesium salts that should result from late-stage precipitation of salt deposits from sea water. Over the last 100 years, extensive studies of sea- water evaporites, in relation to brine density, have been a topic of discussion. The development of evaporation models has facilitated the increased production and purity of solar salt (salt produced through evaporation of brine by the sun's energy). Conversely, this information can be utilized to gain an understanding of how rock-salt formations were precipitated from sea water by analyzing the elemental constituents of the rock salt and of the resulting brine. By evaluation of well-documented, phase-curve tables of sea-water evaporation, a basic theory can be formulated on how the Flowerpot salt unit was formed.

A gravimetric method for measuring rates of capillary rise in powders was explored. Methods to improve reproducibility and consistency of the results were investigated. In particular, the effects of particle size and packing uniformity were addressed. Studies of the wetting behavior of both spherical glass beads and irregularly shaped synthetic graphite particles by various organic liquids were carried out. Standardized procedures for bed preparation will be described. The applicability of the Washburn equation for surface energy evaluation in such systems will be discussed. The situation of Japanes coal mine is in the severe enviroment, because the policy on coal mining has changed. Every year one or two coal mines will be foced to close. To continue the production of coal, we have to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, the mining by longwall method which is more than 250m was attempted at Taiheiyou Coal Mine to reduce the cost and this mining method have had successful results. To get successful results by this mining method, the controlling and prediction of gas emission from the longwall panel will be most important things. In this paper, the comparison of the predicted gas emission from the mining panel based on the measured gas content by using new device with the observed results is described.

A further development of the theory of heat- and mass transfer in the system “strata - mine opening" is necessary for an improvement of the existing technique of heat calculation of mines and other underground constructions. A generalized boundary problem of heat- and mass conduction in strata around an opening as a theoretical ground for that purpose and several particular situations, important from the point of view of an opening and surrounding strata heat state analysis, as well as results of numerical experiments executed for such analysis are presented.

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. World demand for metallized iron continues to increase, keeping pace with steelmaking requirements for lower-cost hot metal. Virgin iron ore and in-plant oxide fines can be reduced to direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot-briquetted iron (HBI). Maumee Research & Engineering Inc. (MR&E) developed an improved coal-based process for the cost-effective production of either DRI or HBI. Starting with dry compaction, the process combines the latest technology for material preparation, rotary hearth furnace construction and environmental control. Coarse iron ore fines are blended with pulverized nonmetallurgical coal to produce a highly metallized (>90%) product. This paper presents production and installation cost data based on operating and under-construction iron oxide reduction facilities.

The paper describes experiments to stabilize mineral processing waste materials for use in construction. Fine mineral processing wastes from various mines have been mixed with binders and compacted. As binders blast furnace slag and other materials have been used. Experiments have been made in laboratory scale and in large scale. The results have been evaluated by means of determinations of compression strength and the modulus of elasticity. The paper also describes some experiments in laboratory and large scale to use stabilized mineral processing wastes for back filling in cut and fill mining.

The handling of fine coal is an important issue for both the coal and utility industries. Reconstitution of fine coal in the form of pellets or briquettes would be desirable if it could be done economically. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three binders, asphalt-emulsion, corn starch and Brewex, informing pellets of ultrafine clean coal. It was found that asphalt-emulsion and corn starch were not effective binders. However, the use of Brewex resulted in pellets that exceeded all of the minimum quality requirements for coal pellets.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions was studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH, as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a combined mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion with the film diffusion having the most significant effect. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.

The statistical information and cost data used in this report has been made available by NICKDATA INC. Since 1982, NICKDATA INC. of Toronto, Canada, has produced an annual comprehensive nickel industry cost study. Up to date information on 22 mines, 21 smelters, and 16 nickel refineries representing 30 nickel production operations in 17 countries are included in the computerized cost analysis. The report is compiled from information obtained through regular annual visits to major nickel operations and continuous monitoring of information on all nickel producers. The 1984 report which was completed this summer, reveals drastic changes in the nickel industry cost structures.

Sanitary landfilling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for any natural limitations at a particular site Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) Regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites. (2) Site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources. (3) Re- search on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills. (4) Formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers.

The article deals with the use of a digital twin in the assessment and optimization of a conveyor system in the Chilean copper mine. This example shows that a digital twin is initially just a new (albeit powerful) tool with which the system behavior can be examined. The benefits for the customer arise through the system identification and automatic detection of critical deviations from the target state. This knowledge allows mine management to react and coordinate operational and/or maintenance counter measures to insure optimal performance of their conveyor system. The information derived from the BeltGenius digital twin also allows mine management to gain a clear perspective of the overall efficiency of their conveyors, which will be invaluable for future conveyor component selections.

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. . The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

Robotics is topical for mining owing to deterioration of miner's safety as a depth of winning, limited functions of traditional mechanization and automation, rise of miner's labor cost. Mining robot is an autonomous mining machine with a free programmable control that provides a multifunctional use of working head. After analysis of world publications the database “Technological applications of robotics in mining" has been built. In most cases robots are suggested for imitation of miner's motions. The following shapes of robotics had been classified for mining: technological robot as a flexible controlled mining machine, remote manipulator, mine rescue robot. The problems of both non-repeated environment recognition and telepresence without direct visibility must be solved. The more a robots integration is the less investments and the more efficiency are. Computer simulation of robotics-based mining is founded on a base of 6 robots functional models, Petri nets and library of 30 robotized technologies. There are some examples of mine robotization in the paper.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber and caulks and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which includes chalk, limestone and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of the impurity minerals. Wet and dry grinding are used in the processing of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation and/or particle-size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion characteristics. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity and cost.

Coal extraction typically results in the recovery of pure rock that ranges from small to very large quantities depending on seam thickness and other characteristics. The removal of pure rock may allow the recovery of three times the amount in middling coal particles, which has significant economical benefits. In an industrial example, a 150% increase in revenue was realized from deshaling a low-ash, run-of-mine coal and blending with a processed clean coal product. Deshaling is the process of removing pure rock from coal, which normally involves a high-density separation in a gravity-based process. The removal of the relatively pure rock near the point of extraction has the potential to further enhance the economics of an operation due to reduced materials handling and refuse storage costs.

Although recent advances have significantly improved our understanding of flotation fundamentals, disturbance variables combine to make it difficult to maintain steady state operating conditions over either the short or long term. One of the major concerns relates to knowing how much reagent to add to the flotation system, how to monitor the addition rate, and how to determine when to adjust the reagent addition rate in the presence of these disturbances. This paper will look at the development and installation of process control systems that address these issues. The economic benefits that accrued from the implementation of these strategies is described.

SOLA-DM is a three-dimensional finite-difference computer code designed to model the dynamics of an incompressible fluid and the transport of discrete particulate material around obstacles impervious to flow. The numerical methods used in this code are described. SOLA-DM was used to predict the particle flux sampled by the 10-mm Dorr-Oliver Cyclone and MINIRAM dust monitors. Various geometric and dynamic variations of monitor and airflow combinations were tested. The code predictions are shown in computer-generated graphic plots.
