Gold is often associated with arsenopyrite in many refractory gold ores. The selective recovery of arsenopyrite by flotation is therefore necessary in order to maximize the recovery of gold. However, the complexity of arsenopyrite flotation often makes it difficult to obtain a high recovery from real lean gold ore. This paper presents the results of arsenopyrite flotation by ultrasonic pretreatment in micro flotation experiments and bench scale flotation tests. The tests showed that pure arsenopyrite exhibited low natural floatability due to the oxidation on the mineral surface under ambient conditions. Using ultrasonic pretreatment, the oxidation film was ruptured and the floatability was enhanced greatly. The presence of Fe (III) was found to inhibit the flotation of arsenopyrite and this depression was also removed by the ultrasonic pretreatment. This result explained why the arsenopyrite in real ore is often difficult to float and how ultrasonic pretreatment can effectively improve the arsenopyrite flotation in real gold ores. Guanidine (GMM) was found to be a superior collector for arsenopyrite in acidic medium and xanthate in alkaline medium.

n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

To increase zinc recovery in the concentrate, this investigation performed mineralogical characterization, dispersion studies, bench and pilot-scale flotation experiments and an industrial flotation trial. The objective was to verify the flotation behavior of the silicate zinc ore (calamine type) in the presence of slimes, with the aid of dispersing agents. Characterization studies identified the major minerals in the flotation feed as hemimorphite (calamine), quartz and dolomite. Dispersion tests showed that enhanced dispersion of the particles in the pulp in the absence of reagents occured at a pH range between 8.5 and 12.0. Bench-scale flotation experiments were planned using the statistical tool of complete factorial design at two levels, replicated once. These experiments showed, and were confirmed at the pilot-plant scale, that higher doses of sodium sulfide and polymeric dispersant combined with sodium silicate favored a higher metallurgical recovery. At 6,800 g/t (218 oz/st) sodium sulfide and 6,992 g/t (224 oz/st) polymeric dispersing agent combined with sodium silicate, a zinc grade of 38.4% in the final concentrate was achieved, at an average metallurgical recovery of 72.4%. The industrial trial confirmed the pilot scale results, leading to zinc recovery of 76.1% and a 37.3% zinc grade in the concentrate. The truly educated man is better prepared to meet the challenge of the times. This challenge can be either beneficial or harmful depending upon one s orientation, Certainly man can no longer continue in the way of his father or even in the manner of his own previous experience as he seeks self-fulfillment, unless he is willing to sacrifice inner integrity--unless he is willing to compromise self-determination and self-expression. He must make a choice as society moves rapidly into high gear in the areas of automation and cybernetics. Industry, a unit of society, has a high stake in meeting this challenge, The better prepared and more mature its personnel, the better the end result as it attempts to meet the challenge. It therefore has a vital concern in proper training of such personnel, that their contribution will be of maximum quality. The specialized training required demands a broad liberal arts background which gives the individual a wider perspective upon which to base judgment. This greatly aids his development as he enters graduate school or goes directly into industry. In either case, his value to industry is enhanced. It would seem that the small liberal arts college provides the best environment for such a program, Consideration of several factors will, I hope, throw some light on the severity of the problem.

One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value .are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A) A relatively large size sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B) When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves.

In Louisiana salt mines a sudden erruption or outburst of salt and gas occurs when the heading face approaches a pressure pocket (altered salt with high pressure gas). The resulting cavity is semi-ellipsoidal, reaching lengths of 50m or more. Potential risks from the outbursts include loss of life and equipment. A gas outburst is initiated by "disking" of the salt in biaxial compression and propagates by spalling of the cavity walls and further disking. The outburst is terminated by a combination of dilatancy hardening, increase in stress along the cavity axis, and enlargement to boundaries of the pressure pocket.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

INTRODUCTION Uranium production in Saskatchewan commenced in 1953 at the Eldorado Nuclear Mine in the Beaverlodge area of North Saskatchewan, followed over the next few years by nineteen other smaller mining operations. Production rose from 453 600 to 2 721 600 kg per annum by 1958. Over supply and the closure of the U.S. market to Canadian uranium led to an equally rapid decline to an annual production which varied from 453 600 to 907 200 kg during the years 1964 to 1976. As the market strengthened there was a resurgence of the Saskatchewan industry and production from one underground and two open pit mines reached 2 809 000 kg in 1980 for a return of 232 000 000 dollars (Table 1). [ ] Future output will be increased by a potential 4 536 000 kg from the Key Lake mine now under construction and scheduled to commence production in 1983. Three other projects are in an advanced stage of planning and are currently in the regulatory review process. Several other prospects are being evaluated. Figure 1 shows the location of uranium mines in Saskatchewan and table 2 illustrates the present status of uranium mines and deposits in Saskatchewan. At present, 1400 workers are employed directly by the uranium mining industry. Saskatchewan has diverse mining conditions ranging from the underground mine of Eldorado Nuclear Limited 1870 m deep with a low grade ore deposit averaging from 0.17-0.20% with extraction by carbonate leaching through an open pit operated by Gulf Minerals with a moderate depth of 110 m and 0.37-0.5% grade to the shallow open pit of Cluff Mining 30 m deep with a very high average ore grade of 7.0%. Extraction at both open pits utilizes acid leach extraction processes, the latter after gravimetric separation. Key Lake mining has commenced development of the next mine to come into production which will have two open pits to a depth of 80 and 175 m with an average 3% grade to be followed by the deep open pit of Canada Wide Mines Ltd. to a depth of 205 m with average grade of 1.5%. One existing mine will transfer its operation from the present open pit to another of slightly higher average grade. From the Saskatchewan point of view, these different operating conditions present varied problems associated with occupational health and safety and concomitant solutions to reducing worker exposure to radiation. REGULATION OF URANIUM MINES In 1946, the Government of Canada enacted the Atomic Energy Control Act which established the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) and vested in that board powers to regulate all aspects of uranium mining. In the early years, the AECB relied heavily on provincial occupational health and safety agencies for the surveillance of uranium mining and milling operations, particularly with regard to "conventional" occupational health and safety, the AECB having at the time no specific regulations covering the mining industry. There has been considerable dialogue between federal and provincial governments since, traditionally, occupational health and safety is a provincial jurisdiction. Saskatchewan is strongly opposed to the intrusion of the federal government into the provincial domain, particularly as there is little justification for a federal presence in occupational health and safety in uranium mining and milling. The province does, however, accept the need for federal involvement in certain aspects of the regulation of nuclear industry, for example, international sales, research and security of reserves for domestic use.

The extensive lead time to develop most Arizona copper deposits commenced with initial production efforts before the turn of the century, when the first attempts were made to recover gold and silver and later copper from the high-grade vein deposits of the territory. Each of these discoveries, prospects, and early operations had its own lead time and life cycle as economic production was attempted. Because prices of the metals fluctuated and the higher grade material was depleted, economics forced operations to close and companies to fail. Renewed interest in the property because of improved conditions, different interpretation of the geologic structure, or new promotional ability frequently resulted in the formation of yet another company to finance the exploration and, hopefully, the development of the property. This cycle of renewed activity and subsequent abandonment was and is common, accounting for many lead times and for the long period of time from the initial location of claims to large-scale production. In order to gain a perspective on the lead-time interval necessary to achieve development of a large-scale operation, the histories of several major Arizona mines were examined, rather than a simple listing of discovery and production dates of many mines to arrive at a statistical average. The Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel, and Twin Buttes properties were studied, and as much data as possible obtained on the Pinto Valley, Esperanza, Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park-Ithaca Peak properties.

With the exception of sublevel caving, the most common method of underground mining in Sweden is the "cut-and-fill" method. It is normally used for mining non-ferrous metals , and' is used extensively in the complex sulfide ore mines of the Boliden Company in north and central Sweden as well as the mines of the STORA and Vieille Montagne Companies in central Sweden. All in all, the cut-and-fill method is used in 13 of Sweden's 45 mines. As the mines are relatively small, the volume of ore mined by this method represents only about 5 % of the total ore production in Sweden. The commercial value, however, is much large than this percentage would imply. The production volumes and grades of some typical mines are shown in Table I. As seen, when rated internationally, the grades are comparatively low. The prices are set according to ?international metal prices? as dictated by the London stock exchange, and in lieu of governmental support, rational management methods are critical in order to achieve satisfactory profit.

During the testing and design of the Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine, it was found that a much higher carbon loading was possible with CIC (carbon-in-solution columns) than with CIP (carbon-in-pulp). In an effort to keep the carbon handling minimized, an emphasis was put on forcing gold to the CIC circuit rather than the CIP. After considerable study, it was found that a circuit with two thickeners and an interstage leach would force 90% of the gold to CIC. Computer modelling indicates that the benefits of the hybrid circuit include higher recovery, less carbon handling, fewer leach tanks, and lower reagent costs.

This study attempts to compare the costs of transporting coarse coal by pipeline, versus the more conventional use of belt conveyors. Hydraulic conveying of crushed (not pulverized) coal has not had widespread commercial acceptance. However, there is little doubt that the technology is available, so that, should this method be proven economical for a given application, implementation of this technology will become more acceptable. Hydraulic transport by pipeline between the mine stockpile and the coal preparation plant, for distances normally considered practical for an overland belt conveyor, should be an ideal application. In this application there is no need for dewatering facilities at the receiving end of the pipeline, because, the receiving screens at the plant serve this purpose. Further, clarified water from the preparation plant can be recirculated back to the mine, a plus for water resource and environmental considerations.

Wide settlers are a way to decrease the linear velocities of advancing liquid phases. It has, however, been found unnecessary to risk a proper settler performance by building shallow settlers in order to avoid a so-called interface turbulence due to a too big difference between the linear velocities of the organic and the aqueous phase. This conclusion has been reached from tests using a large transparent settler model, where the behaviour of a clean interface between two advancing liquids has been investigated. Also in a more realistic case, making an organic in aqueous or an aqueous in organic dispersion to move between the liquid phases, no obstacle has been found to use a somewhat more deep and correspondingly ore slowly t10wing aqueous phase. Based on above findings, support can be given to a new trend to build the settlers slightly deeper than what has been typical for the so-called low-profile design. In this way, it is much easier to avoid an excessive air introduction and other severe difficulties, like those caused by crud moving from one stage to another. It is further shown, how gravity can be used to slow down and distribute a dispersion being fed into a settler of a VSF unit. Entrainment levels have been found to be reduced by a careful design of primary dispersion distributors and picket fences of the settler. Finally, it is demonstrated, how outlets from the side of the settler can be used to simplity interstage pumping and to decrease the rotation speed of any pumping device.

Iron Mountain Mines, Inc., (IMMI) ore de- posits are located in the southeastern portion of the Klamath Mountains in the West Shasta copper/Zinc Mining District in Shasta County (Figure 1). The original massive sulfide ore deposits totaled 22,895,000 Mt (25 million st). The remaining ore deposits contain 12,875,000 Mt (14,183,000 st) of proven massive sulfides and 2,769,000 Mt (3,050,000 st) of proven gossan deposits. The addition of magnetite deposits and tailings (now marketable) brings the total of proven and probable reserves to 20,433,000 Mt (22,508,000 st). The massive sulfide ore bodies are generating a natural flow of acid mine water which has been slowly leaching minerals out of these deposits. This flow varies in volume, depending on rainfall, and contains variable concentrations of copper, zinc, iron and precious metals. This mine water has been treated for the past 50 years at the mine site to remove copper. The treatment process, utilizing scrap iron precipitation, continues at a production rate of approximately 54,430 Kg (120,000 pounds) of copper precipitate annually.

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy's program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

"A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the demonstration scale (15 t/d) for the extraction of gold using a cyanide-free process. The pyrite was depressed in the flotation circuit in order to promote the flotation of copper and to achieve a sufficient copper grade to meet the copper smelter criteria. However, the recoveries of copper were 80% and only about 50% for the gold was found in the copper concentrate. The balance of the gold (50%) and copper (20%) contained in the pyrite concentrate as a reject from an overall flotation circuit. The gold grade in the pyrite concentrate is 5.40 g Au/t and copper about 0.77%. About 170 tons of pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluid bed to produce a calcine. Copper was then extracted as copper sulphate using diluted sulphuric acid. The residual solid was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Thereafter, the gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation over silica using DST proprietary process. The maximum gold recovery by chlorination was 90%. The average gold recovery by cyanidation of these calcines was 71%. INTRODUCTION Dundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from ores or concentrates. The technology offers viable and efficient gold recoveries and the ability to handle refractory ores and contaminated material (As, Hg, etc..). The process was successfully demonstrated on hundreds of samples provided by various mines, exploration and development projects and has evolved from laboratory experiment to demonstration at an industrial scale. DST’s chlorination process operates in a closed loop circuit, which implies that no liquid effluents are generated. The chemistry and process design allows precious metal deposits containing base metals to be treated viably. The tailings from the process are inert and non-toxic, sulphide depleted and thus non-acid generating. The efficiency of the process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. The company completed in 2015 the construction of the first industrial demonstration plant operating with the DST technology. The plant has a capacity of 15 tons per day of mineral concentrate, and the ability to extract gold and silver utilizing DST chlorination technology. DST has tested its chlorination technology at demonstration scale on the refractory pyrite concentrate containing 5.40 g Au/t and 0.8 %copper. This auriferous pyrite concentrate, was by-product of copper concentrate respecting the copper smelter norms, is produced in a country where cyanide is prohibited and refractory to cyanidation. The pyrite concentrate was initially processed successfully (gold recoveries: > 90%) by the DST technology at laboratory (2011: 20 kg) and pilot (2014: 5 tons) scales to extract gold. About 170 tons of this pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant located in Thetford Mines."

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. Niagara Mohawk, like other northern coal users, has long experienced increased costs during winter months as a consequence of handling frozen coal. These costs include operating labor, maintenance labor and materials, equipment rental, fuel for thawing, demurrage, carrying costs for excess coal inventory and substitution of higher cost electrical generation for lost production capacity. In the winter of 1978-79, limited trials of several coal freeze conditioning agents were made to determine whether these would provide a cost-effective means of reducing the problems of handling frozen coal. Since these trials were generally effective, the Coal Purchasing Department arranged that all rail coal received during the 1979-80 winter from early December to mid March would be treated at the mines during loading. Inasmuch as the treatment costs are themselves appreciable and our various coal suppliers made a variety of choices of chemical supplier and equipment for application, an attempt was made to evaluate the unloading performance of each train received at the two generating stations which use coal as an aid in the future optimization of the use of freeze conditioning agents. These stations also receive coal by truck but this coal is not treated because of the short hauling time. The C.R. Huntley Station in Tonawanda, NY has a capacity of 800MW and burns about 5000 tons of coal per day during the winter months. The coal is primarily from central and western Pennsylvania but one source in southern Kentucky is also used regularly. Most of the Pennsylvania coal is washed and the fines are thermally dried. The coal is delivered in unit trains made up of mixed cars of 60, 75, and 90 ton capacity. Time between loading and arrival at the station averaged five days and ranged from three to eleven during the 1979-80 winter season.

The properties, origin and industrial uses of kaolin clay are briefly reviewed. The general waterwashed beneficiation process is described. Yost aspects of filtration and solids-liquid separation as practiced in the kaolin industry are mentioned along with devices that are currently in the developmental stage. The paper focuses heavily on the well known art of rotary vacuum filtration, including general construction and operating details. Devices under investigation that might be used to mechanically or electrically dewater clay slurries to higher cake solids levels than can be achieved with rotary vacuum filters are described briefly.

Hydraulic slurrying and pumpability characteristics of phosphate matrix (ore) have not been quantitatively defined. An elemental triangular diagram analysis of rock/sediment texture is used to classify the nature of the ore; then related to empirical field data of hydraulic pressureand production yardage ratios. This experiment is applied as a geotechnical tool to provide empirical data of ore slurry and pumpability characteristics as key considerations in the design of slurry pipeline systems. A real texture variability maps are developed on a section of land to assist mine engineering planning.
