Henderson Mine’s primary production transitioned from the main portion of the 7700 level to the 7210 main panel in 2005. On the 7700 level, the southwest (SW) panel was brought into production in 2014 and produced through 2020. A-Panel was brought online in 2019 and took over primary production in 2020. The 7210 north panel is under development with production expected to commence in 2025. The 7700 northwest panel is expected to be the mine’s last production panel.

The first reaction in organizing a project of magnitude is that it's the same as smaller projects -- just bigger. This is not totally correct. The industry's record of completing big-money jobs on time and within budget is not outstanding. From a personal point of view, my question is: What is the project size at which controls are lost? Is it controls? Is it the number of pieces of equipment? Is it the number of decisions to be made? The slowness of communications? Or is it a combination of all of these? In working on multimillion-dollar jobs, the percentage of overrun seems to be lower or show an underrun when the following basics are followed: 1) Preplanning is intensified 2) Data gathering is complete 3) Approach is optimized 4) Planning is realistically scheduled 5) Changes are minimized 6) Decisions are expedited

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To com­pound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores had fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Therefore a special treatment process is needed in order to allow for the gold ore to be leached downstream in a conven­tional cyanidation process for a high gold recovery. There are several options available for this oxidation process like treat­ment of the gold bearing ore in pressure oxidation, in a biooxi­dation or in a roasting plant depending on the reason for the refractoriness. If organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the prima­ry reasons for the refractoriness, whole ore roasting is a pre­ferred method for the treatment of this type of ore. Since dry ore is to feed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill is advantageous. For the dry grinding system, the moisture content and the ore char­acteristic is of importance. Those parameters decide the mode of the grinding system. For autoclave systems common wet grind­ing systems can be applied. This paper deals with technical aspects for dry grinding plants and gives an outlook on and pos­sibilities for new grinding systems.

When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.

One of the primary areas of computer application in mine ventilation has been the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A variety of network analyzers that are aimed toward the solution of flows in a given network has been developed. These programs typically use the Hardy Cross or other iterative algorithm for solution of any network, even those that are complex. The computer software has become more efficient and sophisticated over time and has thus been widely adopted for ventilation network analysis. One of the shortcomings of these programs is that they have been developed with the idea of analyzing the ventilation requirements at a single point in the lifetime of a mine. This provides the ventilation engineer with an important tool for analysis but falls somewhat short of providing a convenient means to economically com- pare alternative methods for ventilating a mine. The program described in this paper provides such a tool. The principal concepts that were necessary for the completion of a computer program that analyzes ventilation alternatives is the capability of efficiently determining the ventilation requirements at a variety of times during the lifetime of the ventilation system and some method of analyzing the costs of the alternatives on a realistic comparative basis. To accomplish this task, the authors began using Penn State's mine ventilation simulator designated as PSU/MVS, Didyk et al. (1977a, 1977b) and added the necessary additional software to accommodate the need for multi-period, time-dependent analysis of the net- work. The software was then tested on a coal mine ventilation problem with a 23-year life. The problem points out the value of such a program for ventilation analysis.

"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

Despite record production levels and still above-average prices compared to the lows of 2000, the industry is struggling to make profits and provide the returns on capital that investors are seeking. A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical when responding to a fire incident, as an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring fire contaminants, such as toxic gases and smoke, unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been developed by researchers and scholars around the world. However, those proposed methods rely heavily on a vast number of mine ventilation simulations, which is time-consuming and computer-resource intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this study, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation is developed and implemented into the MFIRE mine fire simulation software. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method is proved to be reliable and accurate.

Separation of dolomite from apatite, because of nonselective adsorption, cannot be achieved by conventional froth flotation technique. Results obtained in the present study also indicate, that this can be attributed to the depletion of the collector molecules due to complexation with the calcium and magnesium ions, dissolved from the two minerals. However, it has been established in this investigation that conditioning the material at pH 10, followed by reconditioning, without any additional collector, at pH 4, results in selective flotation of dolomite from the mixture. The recovery of apatite, in the proposed reconditioning process, is much higher than with the conventional conditioning under similar pH conditions. The mechanisms involved in the conventional conditioning, and the reconditioning process are presented.

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

The quest for ore in an open pit is fundamentally an earth moving proposition. This thesis is vividly underscored by the rapidly increasing volume of waste to be removed in newer mines, where in some instances waste to ore ratios have reached as high as 20 to 1. Continuing depletion of high grade reserves, greater demand for raw materials, coupled with ever climbing labor costs, have made the problem still more pronounced and the need for more effective means of earth moving in an open pit even more acute. A conservative approach to the problem has been to upgrade the sizes of conventional earth moving equipment such as shovels and trucks. In many open pits, particularly in the C.S., this has been responsible for the generally down- ward trend of earth moving costs. None the less, the investment costs of these machines are high, and their gigantic engines are seldom fully utilized. Moreover, a large number of operators are required and maintenance remains relatively high. Unfortunately most people have felt that no other viable alternative was in sight within today's technological capabilities.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

The National Steel Pellet Project and the Butler Taconite Project are operated by The Hanna Mining Company in the vicinity of the towns of Keewatin and Nashwauk, on the western Mesabi Range. Production began in 1967, after seven years of exploratory and development diamond drilling and reconnaissance magnetic surveys, Previously, direct shipping hematitegoethite ores and gravity concentrates had been produced in the area from numerous open pits and several underground mines since the start of the century. Total shipments of these oxidized ores amounted to more than 200 million tons, but at the present time such reserves are nearly exhausted, and there are no mining operations in the Keewatin-Nashwauk area except at the two taconite projects. The locations of all of the present taconite operations on the Mesabi Range are shown in Figure 1, extending for a distance of about seventy miles from the Butler plant to the Dunka River area. The Butler and National plants have a combined rated capacity of 4.4 million tons of pellets. Their reserves cover a combined strike length of about eight miles on the Biwabik iron formation. All of the intervals between present taconite operations on the Mesabi are potential sources of additional magnetic taconite; in particular, exploration and economic studies have been carried out by Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the Biwabik area between Aurora and Virginia, and by Pickands Mather and Company in the Hibbing area. However, west of the Henna and Butler holdings, it appears unlikely that magnetic taconite exists in commerical quantities at economic depths due to extensive oxidation of magnetite to hematite.

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. To many, petroleum exploration and successful geophysics , are partly synonomous, This is not because natural petroleum is usually concentrated as a liquid, nor certainly not because oil can be detected directly. The reason is Chat geophysics helps to at least better understand and sometimes, to even explain the essential geology involved. That groundwater is similarly a liquid with all but a few of its basic geologic relationships practically identical to petroleum, seems to have escaped many of those most interested and responsible for complete geo-hydrologic knowledge. The paramount need to use every means at our disposal for maintaining and expanding our crustal resources reserves are generally obvious, However, in view of the rapidly mounting requirements, continual re-emphasis is worthwhile.

The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

Effective risk management in major subsurface projects involves ways to mitigate adverse impacts to final design and construction approaches due to changed subsurface conditions. An Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) collaborated with Observational Method will be an effective contractual tool to address risk developed due to encountering differing site conditions. Observational Method (OM) can further be supported with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with automated data-driven decision-making features in risk mitigation and implementation of proper design and construction approaches. This paper presents collaborative applications of ECI, OM, machine learning, and risk baselining in risk management and productivity enhancement in tunneling projects.
