Explosives are probably the most widely used and most mysterious large scale' mining tools of modern times. The post black powder explosives were primarily nitroglycerin-based straight dynamites, ammonia dynamites, blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamites, ammonia gelatin dynamites, etc. Of these, the strongest and highest velocity explosive used in industrial operations is blasting gelatin, which is nitroglycerin colloided with a nitrocellulose of medium nitrogen content in proportions which give the product a plastic character, or about 93 to 7. Many variations of the basic groups above were developed by substituting ammonium nitrate and/or sodium nitrate for some of the nitroglycerin. The nitrates being insensitive to caps required a certain percentage of nitroglycerin to sustain detonation in smaller quantities or diameters. Paralleling the development of industrial dynamites was the development of more expensive, highly sophisticated explosives which were developed for specific military purposes. Such explosives as Amatol, RDX, Composition A, Composition B, Composition C, Lead Azide, PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate), Tetryl, Pentolite, TNT, etc., were primarily military explosives. Amatol, which is a cast mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT (Trinitrotoluene), and identified by percentage of AN versus TNT as 50-50 Amatol, 80-20 Amatol, etc., was a favorite World War I explosive. RDX, or Cyclonite, was widely used in World War II. Also used during WW II were compositions A. B, and C, which were mixtures of RDX (Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine), TNT, and other nitrotoluenes. These high explosives, along with nitroglycerine, are exact chemical compositions or mixtures of exact chemical compositions which are individually explosive, or in other words, individually capable of explosive chemical decomposition when properly initiated. These chemical decompositions result in the formation of simpler compounds and/or large quantities of common combustion gases, and large amounts of energy in the form of heat. Of these, the most powerful is RDX which, based on the ballistic mortor test, is 1.5 times as powerful as TNT. Chemically, the decomposition of TNT releases about as much energy as the reaction of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.

As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of US coal companies are developing seams previously considered too deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is wed at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations all influence the design of longwall panels. This paper examines these influences, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, on the feasibility of two-, three-, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Operational grade modelling is a technique that uses production data to run daily updates of property models. It will enable mining engineers to use property predictions based on the most recently acquired data as support for quality control and decision making. The approach necessitates that the properties of the run- of-mine material can always be attributed to individual mining blocks or charges. The software employed must be highly reliable, because a system failure or the loss of data could seriously affect the mine's quality management. An operational grade modelling system has been developed for the Breitenau magnesite mine. It makes use of the Linear Octree Based Property Modelling system which was conceived and realised at the Free University of Berlin. This paper describes the system design and gives an account of the experiences during the first six months since system start-up.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in opencut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints, such as spoil heaps and rivers. Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near-horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only.

Four samples of galena, each prepared differently, dry ground chalcopvrite and real gar have shown various quantities of liberated sulfur corresponding up to nine equivalent monolavers on their surfaces as determined by the solvent extraction/UV analysis of sulfur using ethanol. The pretreatment of a dry ground galena sample with acidified ammonium chloride or neutral, saturated sodium chloride solutions rendered the mineral readily floatable. The collectorless floatabilities of galena pretreated with the former solution and of drv ground chalcopvrite have been evaluated in reference to the natural floatability of sulfur using the critical surface tension of floatability approach with aqueous methanol solutions. It is shown that the amount of sulfur- on these samples can be correlated with their flotation rate, which was found to he first order within the critical surface tension range. The larger the concentration of surface sulfur, the faster the sulfide mineral floats, thus, the greater its flotation rate constant.

INTRODUCTION Classification of coal seams as thin, medium, and thick is both subjective and relative and is more a reflection of the statistical mode of the thicknesses en- countered in a mining region. A geological factor more precisely understood as defined than thickness is the inclination of the seams to the horizontal, commonly referred to as the pitch or the dip of the seam. Thick and steeply pitching seams present far more challenges to the ingenuity of the mining men to devise methods for their extraction than the thick and less steeply inclined ones. In a marginal case, where a thick coal seam may be minable by surface or underground methods, the decision bears a close relationship to the technological developments in the mining scene. Near surface thick coal seams are a special gift of nature and are not as wide- spread as the ones that call for the application of under- ground methods. Recent advancements in surface mining equipment have made it possible to surface mine to great depths. Stripping ratios of 30: 1 (cu yd of over- burden removed per ton of coal) have been achieved. The extraction of thick seams which preclude the use of surface methods is the concern of this chapter. Specifically, the objective here is to outline the special technological factors in underground mining of thick coal seams and to illustrate through several case histories the methods that are practiced in the North American continent. For the purposes of this chapter, a thick seam is defined as one which is not readily minable with currently available equipment without modifications to the extraction method or the equipment. At the present time, a thickness of 4.8 m (16 ft) can be considered as the lower limit, although developments in equipment and methods can be expected to push this limit upwards. The data for the case histories were collected from two extended mine visits in 1975 and 1978, and from other published accounts of the mines visited. Reference is drawn particularly to reports by Bise, Ramani, and Stefanko (1976) and Rarnani and Kenzy (1979). THICK SEAM MINING METHODS The various methods of mining thick seams can generally be grouped into three major categories: full face methods, where the entire thickness of the seam is re- covered in a single pass; slicing methods, where the seam is extracted to its full thickness by horizontal or inclined slices either in an ascending or descending order; and caving methods, where the seam is undercut and the en- tire coal seam is recovered by caving the top coal into the excavated cut, or some variations of the basic sub- level caving method. As shown in Table 1, in each of these methods, the coal is removed by either room-and-pillar or longwall methods. Hydraulic mining and transport of the coal in open flumes or in pipelines are also practiced. Addition- ally, the void created by the removal of coal may be filled with a packing material (stowing) except in the caving methods. The pitch (dip) of the seam, particularly when it is greater than 0.26 rad (150), imposes severe operational limitations on mobile equipment. The lithologic, mineralogic, and magnetic beneficiation characteristics of the iron formation at U. S. Steel's Atlantic City Ore Mine, Fremont County, Wyoming, have been determined. The iron formation averages about 30 percent Fe content, and varies from 125 feet to about 500 feet in thickness. It is composed of interbedded magnetite-rich quartzites, magnetite-quartz-amphibole schists, and amphibole-chlorite schists. Quartz, actinolite-tremolite, chlorite, and magnetite are the essential mineral constituents. These rocks are differentiated into four major ore types on the basis of their relative quartz and amphibole content. The iron content of the magnetic concentrate decreases and the silica content increases with decreasing grain size and increasing amphibole content in each ore type at the same fineness of grind. Criteria were developed to enable the mine operator to recognize the ore types and to blend them to produce a more uniform concentrator feed. This results in less variation in product quality and requires fewer changes in operating conditions-in the concentrator.

Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. A mineral deposit has been discovered and explored sufficiently to establish the presence of ore in ?commercially marketable quantities," This is the point at which exploration ends and development begins, Of course, when the presence of commercially marketable quantities of ore are thought to be present the deposit had to be evaluated before this decision could be reached. If, on the other hand, it was thought that commercially marketable quantities of ore are not present, either more exploration has to be done or the project must be abandoned. It is this decision with which this paper is concerned, more particularly, the influencing factors behind this decision. The final question to be answered is: what profit can my company reasonably expect to make by developing this property and putting it into production? The answer must be expressed as a figure for final profit per ton, money which can be used to pay dividends or to build up cash reserves. Some acquisition cost has probably been paid and the exploration cost incurred at the time of decision, (abandonment or development). In addition to returning these acquisition and exploration costs, the deposit must pay development, mining, milling, capital expense of new plants and equipment, taxes, and various other related costs.

The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950?s by a Texan, Sammy Collins, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business. The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

The coal industry in South Africa is briefly outlined. Test- work carried out on bulk samples of coal in the laboratory and used in the design of the Van Dyks Drift washery are described. Factors affecting the selection of equipment and the designed capacity of the plant are discussed. A description of the crushing plant, washery and load out section is given together with performance data obtained in the final acceptance tests. New features incorporated in the Van Dyks Drift plant and in more recent plants of the Group are outlined.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

The freezing and subsequent solidifying of unstable, weak (sands, silts and clays) and/or wet soil to form a desired-shape frozen barrier around a construction area are possibly the main features of the freezing method for shaft sinking. The barrier, along with strengthening the soil, provides a dry environment to ensure sustainable subsurface construction work before placing a permanent lining. The freezing method requires the installation of freezing pipes in boreholes around the construction area and the circulation of chilled salt water through these pipes and has long been a proven technique for dry shaft sinking through unstable and water-bearing seam around the world. As removing heat from the ground is the main feature of the method, an efficient thermal design of the freezing process is mandatory to ensure success of the shaft sinking operation. This applies to both the sustainability and economy of the intended structure. The design presented in this paper is aimed at figuring out the heat-removing ability and operating time of the refrigerative equipment using some simple formulae. The authors adopted a theoretical approach to determine the quantity of heat to be removed from the ground. The amount of energy for the equipment was found to be greater than that for freezing, which proved the validity of the design. The active freezing period was calculated to be 121 days. The authors followed the structural design of the freezing process they proposed in their previous work (Farazi and Quamruzzaman, 2013). Though the first coal seam in the coalfield was encountered at a depth of approximately 352 m in the subsurface, the target depth for cooling and freezing was decided to be 162 m. The formation demands extra care to nullify its risk of the temporary structure collapsing and water rushing in (Farazi et al., 2012). Discussion on the determination of refrigerative equipment parameters was excluded from the scope of this work.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. The Wing Hill Garnet Deposit, located near Rangeley, Maine, forsed through assimilation of Early Paleozoic metasediments by an intrusive Devonian gabbro. The resulting ore body is exceptionally large and high-grade, consisting of 50-70% almandine garnet. Following open-pit quarrying, the ore is trucked to Industrial Garnet Extractives' mill in West Paris for final processing. Two grades of abrasive are produced - a pure, premium grade INDUSTRIAL GARNET and the Lower grade co-product IGE UTILITY GRIT, both of which are available in a variety of sizes. INDUSTRIAL GARNET is marketed world- wide into a diverse marketplace including both loose grain and bonded applications.

Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

This paper reviews the historical background leading to the development of the project. It gives a description of the exploration program and resulting geological and ore reserve information together with plans for mining. A discussion is included of the three processes investigated for the project: 1. Rotary Hearth and Magnetic Concentration 2. Shaft Furnace and Electric Furnace 3. Rotary Kiln and Electric Furnace Results of pilot plant campaigns conducted at Fiskaa, Norway, and Riddle, Oregon, on the process chosen for the production of ferronickel are presented. The paper continues with a review of the considerations involved in selection of commercial plant equipment and concludes with comments on the current status of the project.
