Recent publication of United States Bureau of Mines figures showed that the sand and gravel (3) industry is the largest single mining industry in the United States in term of yearly tonnage produced. The yearly production of over 500,000,000 tons per year now exceed bituminous coal production. This disclosure caught unawares many observers who have not been following closely the rapid-growth of this phase of mining. Along with this steady growth in production, the sand and gravel industry has gone through an accelerated and varied program of beneficiation in a period of the last ten years.

The presence of goethite in a hematite ore has been shown to strongly affect the time of heating to the firing temperature. The investigation of spalling of single pellets and of packed beds has enabled free water and goethite spalling to be identified as separate phenomena. In addition, it has been shown that even for an 18 inch deep bed of green balls the free water and goethite drying periods can be considered separately. Based on this observation, a method of predicting production rate and hood temperature profile is presented. The method required knowledge of the ore goethite content, ore grind and the green pellet bulk density. Laboratory results were found to be in good agreement with actual plant practice and have led to improved process performance.

The structure is secondary -its reasons for being are to support, enclose and provide access to the machine, for servicing. This results in a wide variety of supporting structures. Other considerations are: plant layout, local soil conditions, climate, local laws and codes, and last, but by no means least, the Customer's wishes.

The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

Special attention must be considered in the production of high-grade rare earth products, such as mixed rare earth oxalates or carbonates. In the main minerals used industrially, the rare earth elements (REEs) are finely associated with impurities like calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), thorium (Th), uranium (U) and phosphorus (P). Most of these impurities must be removed to avoid losses of rare earth oxides (REOs) as well as to prevent product quality degradation and low operational performance in the downstream steps of solvent extraction or ion exchange. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REEs, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with low Al3+ and UO22+ concentrations and very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO42− impurity contents.

This paper proposes a new method to estimate the percentage of load carried by the gob in underground coal mines using a new parameter that introduces the site-specific overburden geology. The new parameter was defined as the total strong layer thickness (tstr) that represents the strength and stiffness of the overburden with a single value. Twelve field measurement case studies from 11 different U.S. longwall mines with different overburden geologies were used to develop the new methodology. 2D numerical models of these case studies (and additional parametric runs with different panel widths) were verified against field measurements such as surface subsidence and stress. Statistical analyses using the model results were conducted for a loading model with the new tstr parameter as one of the variables. The new methodology was found to have a coefficient of determination (R2) of 85% when compared to the field measurements and the parametric models. The method was then tested for practical implementation for pillar design. The percentages of load carried by the gob as estimated by the new method were implemented into the LaModel program, that is commonly used in the coal industry. The results obtained from LaModel were compared to the available field stress measurements, and the new method implemented into LaModel was found to give successful results.

There is an ever-increasing need for quality construction materials to provide the necessary housing and transportation facilities required for the protection and movement of people and goods. By the year 2000, requirements for housing in the United States will have doubled due to population growth. Requirements for transportation facilities in this same period will also have increased substantially. Further, all existing facilities for both housing and transportation will require substantial maintenance of one form or another. Aggregate is the basic material of the construction industry. There is some occurrence of aggregate source material in virtually every state of the United States, and in every country in the world. United States reserves of commercially useable aggregate have never been systematically estimated and are probably so vast as to be incalculable.1 However, in many areas its existence is largely negated by inaccessibility. Often it is lodged deeply or intricately in the earth or it is too distant from markets to offer a desirable "return on investment" under the present economic structure. Other factors that prevent its utility are the occurrence of small scattered deposits that individually are too small to justify the necessary capital investment for exploitation and collectively are too widely disseminated; also, the aggregate nay be deficient in certain desired chemical or physical qualitites.1

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. This paper describes the shaft design and construction for a 72-inch microtunnel under 14 active railroad tracks in Avondale, Louisiana. Initial shaft design for a deeper tunnel alignment considered secant piles with a jet grout plug. Final design for a shallower tunnel alignment included contractor input with support consisting of braced sheet piles with a jet grout plug. The authors further elaborate on jet grout implementation in very soft organic clay soils and the practical limitations of jet grouting. This paper emphasizes how all project participants worked together to utilize value engineering and alternative delivery on a unique tunneling project with a focus on temporary shaft support.

INTRODUCTION The goal of any development drilling program is the drilling of the exact number of holes necessary to adequately determine grade and dimensions of an orebody, no more and no less. This cost of development drilling represents a large part of the total development budget. Any technique which eliminates unnecessary drilling costs produces beneficial results, both to the company and to the person who can claim the savings. This high development cost factor has produced a quantity of research to develop techniques, for efficient control of drilling programs. Recent mining literature is full of articles describing methods for measuring and increasing the effectiveness of these expensive projects. The method described in this paper was developed during the latter part of a major development drilling project at the Christmas Mine of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company in Gila County, Arizona. It was used to test the need for drilling individual holes but could be expanded to control an entire project. This technique was used at Christmas as a practical means for evaluating adequacy of drilling on an individual hole basis, and it was possible to eliminate several previously approved holes. Application of this method involves an evaluation of geological conditions present and a good bit of common sense. Projects involving large disseminated, rather homogeneous orebodies of the porphyry-copper type would be the most likely candidate for application of the technique. Discontinuous orebodies would not be amenable to this technique. The method is based on the measurement of the linear correlation between the spatial distribution of two sets of data. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is used. This is a standard statistic commonly used to measure linear correlation between two sets of data. The statistical significance of the correlation coefficient at a 95% confidence level is the main criterion for controlling the project. For purposes of reference we will call our technique the "correlation method" in this paper.

The dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon but can result in a more efficient dissolution process. The objective in this work was to investigate the dissolution of synthetic hematite powder in mixtures of oxalic and sulfuric acid. Experiments were done at different acid ratios and temperatures. An increase in temperature from 15 to 35 °C increased solubility, whereas an increase from 35 to 50 °C did not change the solubility but had a profound effect on the kinetics. An important finding was that oxalic acid advanced the dissolution process since increasing the amount of oxalic acid in the system resulted in faster kinetics and higher solubilities. The dissolution kinetics were well described with the Kabai model, which was the only studied model able to describe the whole reaction time. However, the solid specific constant a varied for the different acid ratios and this is argued to be a result of changes in the solid phase. The changes in the constant a were not in line with the original study of Kabai, which indicates that a cannot be the solid specific constant but it can be the constant connected to dissolving media describing the changes in the dissolution mechanism.

The amount of energy used to break rock is of interest in mine-to-mill operations to minimize energy consumption during blasting at the mine site and comminution at the processing plant. In this research, a direct energy measurement was made using high-velocity impact to cause breakage of long granite cores, and to study the energy dissipation along the entire bar length. The results show the formation of three zones of damage — fragmentation, fracture and elastic — that have been characterized in 3D using X-ray tomography. The fragmentation zone of the granite bars was studied in detail to describe the particle size distribution and the particle shape characteristics. The experimental energy dissipation in the fragmentation zone was found to be in close agreement with the expected energy calculated from the Bond work index (BWI) equation [1] when the anisotropic granite particles in the fragmentation zone are defined by length rather than by sieve size. The results increase our understanding of rock breakage and energy consumption and may find future applications in mine-to-mill operations.

The Otjikoto Gold Mill was commissioned during November–December 2014 as Namibia’s first new gold producer in 30 years. Its operations consist of surface mining with a modern gravity/carbon-in-pulp mill for ore treatment and gold recovery. The initial mill design capacity was 2.5 Mt/a. Its capacity was expanded after nine months of operation to 3.1 Mt/a, and process performance has significantly surpassed design expectations. After startup, the Otjikoto Mill’s throughput and gold recovery ramped up quickly, with both parameters exceeding design after only two months of operation. The robust process performance continued into 2019, with key performance indicators (KPIs) eclipsing design values in almost every aspect of mill operation. The Otjikoto Mill’s gold recovery is exceptionally high, exceeding 98 percent every year following startup, especially considering the low-grade nature of the deposit.

Antimony has been used extensively in industry and in everyday life since the 19th century, and antimony sulfides have been known since around 4,000 B.C. Antimony’s most significant applications are as a flame retardant in the manufacture of electronics and textiles, as a catalyst for plastic fabrication, and as paint pigment and fining agent in glassware, opacifier in ceramics and an alloying element in ammunition and battery manufacturing plants. It is also used in vehicle brakes and tires. Brake pads contain stibnite (Sb), the sulfide compound of antimony. In particular, stibnite is used in automobiles as a lubricant, vibration reducer and friction stability improver. Anthropogenic activities are the primary source of antimony in the atmosphere [1,2]. Annual global consumption of antimony has increased to more than 1.4 × 105 t, and China is the most significant producer [2].

This paper presents the optimum auxiliary fan(s) location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where dieselpowered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut with varying the intake air quantities using a 30 m3/ s capacity twin 75 kW auxiliary fan and 45 m3/ s capacity twin 110 kW auxiliary fan to control air recirculation and DPM. The results showed that if the drive intake airflow rate matches the fan capacity, air recirculation will occur even when the fan is located 10 m away from the crosscut entry. Results also showed that if the intake drive air quantity was greater than or equal to 150% of fan capacity, no recirculation was observed when the twin 75 kW fan location was at least 5 m and the twin 110 kW fan location was at least 10 m away from the dead-end crosscut access.

Temporary local seismic networks were installed in western Crete, in central Crete, and on Gavdos, an island south of western Crete, in order to image shallow seismically active zones of the Hellenic subduction zone. Data acquisition was divided in four campaigns through the years 1996 to 2001. More than 4000 events in the magnitude range between 0.5 and 4.8 were detected and localized. The resulting hypocenter distribution allows the localization of seismically active zones in the area of central Crete from the Mediterranean Ridge to the Cretan Sea. The comparison of the hypocenter distribution and the structure has allowed intraplate and interplate seismicity to be distinguished. A southwards dipping zone of high seismicity within the Aegean lithosphere is found south of central Crete in the region of the Ptolemy trench. Between 20 and 40 km depth beneath central Crete, the Aegean lithosphere appears to be seismically inactive. Especially for the year 2001, 1560 events were localized, by the seismic network installed on Messara, central Crete. Most of the seismic events were located, as expected, in the South region of central Crete. National Observatory of Athens (NOA) maintains a permanent seismic network in Greece. In this work a comparison of the earthquake epicenters obtained from both the NOA network and the BOCHUM-TUC network is presented.

Soda ash is produced in over 39 countries by the Solvay ammonia-soda process or by mining natural sodium carbonate deposits. The total production of soda ash in 1980 is estimated at slightly over 29 million metric tons. Synthetic production accounted for over 75% of this amount with the balance of production originating from natural sources (either trona or sodium carbonate-rich brines) found primarily in the United States, Mexico, Kenya, and Chad.

Phosphate fines (size ≤ 45 μm), from the Red Sea Region, Egypt, were subjected to beneficiation process to recover the phosphorite grains from such fines. The sample is characterized by low P2O5 content (18.78%) associated with gangue minerals such as silica (22.77% SiO2) and carbonate (2.01% MgO) indicating its low grade. Phosphate pre-concentrate was prepared by gravity separation, using Falcon, where 63.37% of the phosphate, with 24.94% P2O5, 1.46% MgO, and 10.54% SiO2, was firstly recovered reducing the mass flow to the subsequent beneficiation process. However, the gravity tailing was the feed for the reverse phosphate flotation using bench scale column flotation where oleic acid was used as a carbonate gangue collector and amylase enzyme as a phosphate depressant. Under the appropriate flotation conditions (0.1% amylase, 5·10−4 mol/dm3 oleic acid, and temp. 30 °C), phospho-concentrate assaying 0.61% MgO, 13.14% SiO2, and 27.85% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of 55.45%, was finally obtained without the use of expensive depressants, e.g., phosphoric acid or sodium silicate. A tentative flow sheet for the whole process was postulated.
