An uneven gas distribution through the burden layers inside a blast furnace (BF) results in abnormal gas resistance or pressure changes. Rapid variations in the abnormal gas resistance will lead to the occurrence of channeling. A visualization technology mainly made of pressure distribution was developed to predict BF channeling phenomena in this study. The real-time data of BF shaft pressure was used to create a 3D visual model by neural network algorithms and 3D real-time BF pressure changes were observed. The root mean square deviation (RMSD) of the BF shaft pressure was used as an index to set up the predicting criteria of channeling occurrence with the opening of BF Annular Gap Element (AGE), and a predicting system based on the criteria was built. The two criteria for the channeling alarm are the RMSD of the BF shaft pressure (> 0.15 kg/cm2 ) at the upper two levels, and the AGE opening being greater than 60%. This system has been installed in the China Steel Corporation (CSC) BFs, and the test results showed that a prediction can be obtained 8 to 16 min ahead of channeling allowing sufficient time for the operator to adjust the BF operation in order to avoid the occurrence of channeling.

The US$1,850 million EastLink project is a 39km tollway and includes twin 3-lane,1.5km long, undrained driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and so to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes several of the key issues in the tunnel design and construction, including: the integration of the temporary support design with the Contractor’s tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the Designer and Contractor for support type selection and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. detailed hydrogeological assessments during the design and construction phases to allow confirmation of design loads for the tunnel lining design and the various suite of waterproofing tools in order to meet the project inflow requirements. development of a pre-cast invert solution to the main tunnel secondary lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimize risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

The combined 76th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 64th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 8and 9, 2003, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Stakeholders, Partners in Change.” The meeting included four keynote speakers, technical presentations and a tradeshow. Engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. Reflecting the theme of the meeting, all agreed that the mine owners, the government, the community and the employees are all “stakeholders.” They must be “partners in change” for the iron ore mining industry to survive in the region. Compared with past meetings, where improved technology was the primary focus, this year the focus was on the dramatic restructuring of the entire industry. As noted by several of the speakers, “This time, the change is not in technology.”

INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. Introduction Federal and state laws enacted to regulate coal mining and the accompanying public concern about the adverse effects that mining might have on land use have focused much attention on the subsidence of the land surfaces over underground mines. Some questions asked are: • Will abandoned mines subside in the future even though they have exhibited no surface adjustment to date? • If so, when will subsidence take place? • Can a specific surface area be affected by subsidence more than once? • What surface form will the subsidence feature take? • Is there any way to predict when subsidence will occur and end? An attempt is made here to address these questions insofar as it is possible with available data and experience of evaluation of subcritical extraction conditions. Mining that results in subsidence features can be classified as supercritical, subcritical, and critical with respect to the minimum span lengths of the worked-out rooms (Fig. 1). A complete basin will not develop fully immediately over subcritical conditions because the span lengths of the entries are less than the critical dimension (Wardell, 1983). Passageways, entries, and room-and-pillar panels are all included in the subcritical category. Because of the short span lengths, subcritical mining conditions tend to be stable over the life of the mine unless adverse geologic conditions exist (Gray et al., 1974; Dunrud, 1976). Various roof control and support procedures are employed to maintain entry stability during mining. Little information exists concerning the time factor of subsidence over areas of subcritical extraction. Data that have been collected relate to longwall mines, whereby the cavity sizes are designed large enough to induce caving behind the working faces so that complete subsidence at the surface occurs within a short period of time. The UK's National Coal Board (1975) has reduced the enormous amount of data it has collected to empirical correlations and has published these correlations in its Subsidence Engineers Handbook. The handbook states that "None of the foregoing remarks applies to pillar and stall working," with respect to the section discussing the time factor of subsidence caused by longwall mining (National Coal Board, 1975, p. 40). To understand and evaluate how time relates to subsidence above room-and-pillar mines, one must first recognize how mine cavities deteriorate and fail. The propagation of failure to the surface must then be studied, and, finally, the failures that are manifest at the surface in the form of depressions accompanied by both compressional and tensional movements must be investigated. Failure of mine cavities Any cavity beneath the earth's surface represents a condition of nonequilibrium and tends to close with time. Failure of cavities in a subcritical mine can be classified as failure of the roof, failure of the floor, failure of the supports (pillars, cribs), and elastic rebound of the rock. One mode of failure may dominate, but generally combinations of the four will occur. Also, initial instability of geologic materials and structural features and in situ stress may be unknown factors that can contribute to cavity failure. Roof failure is the most obvious opening stability problem in most operating mines. The bridging capabilities of the roof rock are dependent on the rock's material strength, geologic discontinuities, and reaction to humidity changes in the air of the mine. This type of failure may vary in magnitude from gradual flaking to massive roof falls. Mine floor instability can be manifest in the form of a general heave over a broad area or of individual pillar punching. The weaker and thicker the immediate floor material, the more prone a mine is to experience floor problems. Water seeping into an area can soften the underclay, reduce its bearing capacity, and precipitate failure of support for the overburden.

One of the most common critical areas of longwall mining in terms of ground stability are the gateroad and bleeder entries. These critical entries provide much-needed safe access for miners and allow for adequate ventilation required for dilution of hazardous airborne contaminants and must remain open during mining of a multi-panel district. This paper focuses on the stability of the longwall entries subjected to a single abutment load such as bleeders, first tailgate, and last headgate. First tailgate and last headgate are also referred to as blind headgates and tailgates. A study of a longwall district through conditions mapping, support evaluations, and numerical modeling was conducted and evaluated by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The condition mapping and support evaluations were performed on entries that spanned the previous five years of mining and relied on a diverse selection of supports to maintain the functionality of the entry. Numerical modeling was also conducted to evaluate various support types with further investigation and comparison to the condition mapping. The study demonstrated the importance of the abutment load decay versus distance from the gob edge, the potential for a reduction in material handling related injuries, as well as optimal usage of secondary and standing support.

The Cienega project, now under construction by Penoles group, is located in the mountains of the State of Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in the 4-km long system of veins, which will be extracted by underground methods. The planned 1000 tpd process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994.

The Red Dog zinc-lead-silver deposit is located in the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range in northwest Alaska. The region is located 145 km(90 miles) north of the village of Kotzebue (Fig. 1).Red Dog’s current resource base is 143 Mt (157 million st) averaging 16.1% zinc, 4.3% lead and 83g/t (2.4 oz/st) silver. It is contained in four structurally separate deposits— the Hilltop, Main Deposit, Aqqaluk and the newly discovered Paalaaq deposit. Recent exploration for the Aqqaluk and the Paalaaq deposits has contributed to Cominco American’s understanding of the detailed structural geology of the district and its role in the placement of individual ore bodies.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. The $280-million in-vestment is Caterpillar?s largest commitment ever to the mining industry

INTRODUCTION The subway line B of Toulouse (France) has been realized with three different tunnel boring machines (TBM) techniques: Contracts 2 and 5 are excavated with earth-pressure balanced TBM, Contract 4 with a slurry shield TBM, and Contract 3 with a compressed-air TBM. The first three machines are around 7.7 m in diameter, while the last one is 5.3 m. Moreover, a small part of the line (50 m) has been excavated by a conventional method. The tunnels run through the Toulouse molasses, composed of hard sandy clay with pockets and lenses of dense sand. Geotechnical investigations have shown that in these formations, K0 is greater than 1, around 1.8 at a depth of 25 m (Serratrice,2005) and that geotechnical characteristics are homogenous on the whole layout (? =22 kN/m3, Su = 300 kPa, c' = 30 kPa, F' = 32°). The water table is found between 2 and4 m below ground level. As geology, stratigraphy and tunnel cover (between 10 and 20 m) are almost identical, a comparison of movements induced by the excavation by each of the four excavation techniques is possible. This paper presents the soil mass movement measures in the case of the conventional excavation method and in the case of TBM sections. It shows how tunneling parameters may explain the different surface movements observed during excavation. For the sake of simplicity, only the results of Contract 2 (earth pressure balanced TBM)will be presented. Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity, drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments, and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensure the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures (e.g., road surface pavements, concrete slabs, transverse joints, etc.), vehicle dynamics, comfort level, and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed along with an application case.

APELL was developed by the United Nations Environment Program, in cooperation with industry groups, governments and local communities. Since its beginnings in1988, the program has been implemented in more than30 countries. APELL is a tool for bringing people together to allow effective communication about risks and emergency response. The program provides a common-sense approach to accident prevention and response.

The following are some of his thoughts on uranium?s place in the global energy picture. ME: What are Energy Fuels Resources? thoughts on the global nuclear power industry? Steele: The global nuclear power industry is a major contributor to the electrical needs of the world. Though generation by nuclear reactors has primarily attracted attention through the reactor accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, nuclear power continues to quietly and safely provide power to a growing and power-hungry world population. As of March 2008, 30 countries were operating 439 nuclear power reactors. Nuclear power plants provided about 15 percent of the world?s electricity production in 2007. France leads the world in nuclear utilization, with 77 percent of its power coming from nuclear plants. And Lithuania, Slovakia and Belgium each derive more than 50 percent of their power needs from nuclear plants. For much of the developed world, nuclear generation has already been contributing significantly to the supply of electricity. Additionally, 34 new nuclear plants are under construction in 14 countries. Leading the rush to build new nuclear generating plants are China, Russia and India. Each of these countries is building six new nuclear power plants. These 18 plants, totaling almost 12,000 MW of generation capacity, will require about 7.25 kt (16 million lbs) of U3O8 for their initial fuel load and will consume about 2.45 kt/a (5.4 million lbs/year) for the rest of their operating lives. The rest of the world, outside of the United States, has used nuclear power as a viable and economic generation alternative since the commercialization of utility nuclear reactors. And current activity supports the strong future of the nuclear alternative internationally.

Primary economical deposits of rare-earth elements (REEs) are exhausting all over the world, and it has become necessary to find new sources and methods for their extraction. In addition, increasing the application of REEs in modern technological society has increased its demand globally. One of the important movements to compensate for the future shortages of critical metals is the recovery of REEs from recyclable materials. This paper presents a review of the classification and extraction methods, as well as general applications of REEs with emphasis on secondary sources such as coal and coal byproducts, iron ore tailings, apatite, and phosphate byproducts. An overview of the current state of knowledge on the various methods of REE beneficiation and extraction is covered. These methods include physical separation, as well as hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these REE extraction techniques for enhanced recovery has been driven primarily by the unique industrial application of these important elements. This paper further explores the existing and potential environmental challenges associated with REE extraction. The authors have presented a wide array of literature, in-depth discussion of the subject, and a succinct summary of processes and relevant case studies.

Detection and assessment of severe geological anomalies ahead of a longwall face greatly benefits the mining operation. Electromagnetic-based Radio Imaging Method (RIM) is one of the most promising geophysical methods for this task. Based on two decades of development, the latest RIM instrumentation (RIM-IV) has expanded its operational range up to 1,800ft.A site demonstration of the RIM-IV technology was recently conducted within a longwall panel. An extensive ground truth study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the RIM survey results. This study compared the generated RIM tomograms of attenuation rate with the mapped geological anomalies. Three different approaches have been employed to examine the accuracy of the RIM results and to correlate the measured signal attenuation rates with physical properties of the coal seam. The study shows that the RIM-IV technology is able to identify and delineate those geological features that would severely affect the longwall mining operation.

Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

Draglines are the main energy consumers in strip mines. Given the growing cost of energy and environmental concerns, it is important to properly understand dragline energy efficiency. The goal of current research at Missouri University of Science & Technology is to account for operator practice and operating conditions in modeling dragline energy efficiency. This paper presents preliminary correlation analysis and a framework for stochastic modeling of dragline energy efficiency. Thirteen operating parameters (including cycle times, payload, swing angle, and height of dump pile), operator working schedules, operating conditions, and drag, hoist, and swing energies were monitored for an 85 yd3 dragline. Operator effects were examined by two-sample t-tests. The relation between the parameters and energy consumption were assessed by correlation analysis and a stochastic modeling framework has been proposed for dragline energy efficiency. The results show that operator effects are significant (p< 0.05) and energy efficiency is correlated with operating parameters. The completed model will help the coal mines better predict energy consumption, with uncertainty, for different operating conditions.

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve&apos;s Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company&apos;s large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve&apos;s initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve&apos;s operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins.
