GE Industrial Systems has received a multimillion dollar contract from Bucyrus International to supply complete electrical systems for three new draglines. These machines will be installed at Coal India’s Northern Coalfields’ Dudhichua and Nigahi open cast mines. The Dudhichua and Nigahi mines are located south of Varanasi. They produce Type C and Type E coal for use in the region’s super-thermal power stations. The GE systems will power and control the drag, hoist and swing motions of one Bucyrus W2000 walking dragline at Dudhichua and two a Nigahi.

Continuous mining machines are extensively used in the underground coal mining industry. These machines are typically remote-controlled, and severe injuries and fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by the machine. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)have developed the Intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system to provide enhanced protection while minimizing false alarms. The iPD system uses a set of pre-defined rules to determine which machine motions are safe and which would present a potential hazard, and automatically disables only the potentially hazardous motions. This system has been installed and tested on a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine at the NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research in Pittsburgh. Under laboratory conditions, the achievable accuracy and performance of the iPD system has been quantified with respect to a number of variables including position of the conveyor boom, presence of the machine?s trailing cable, and orientation of the miner-wearable component. Following a disaster in a mine, it is important to understand the state of the mine damage immediately with limited information. Computational fluid dynamics can be used to simulate and ascertain information about the state of ventilation controls inside a mine. This paper describes a simulation of tracer gas distribution in an experimental mine with the ventilation controls in various states. Tracer gas measurements were taken in the lab experimental apparatus, and used to validate the numerical model. The distribution of the tracer gas, together with the ventilation status, was analyzed to understand how the damage to the ventilation system related to the distribution of tracer gases. This study will be used in future research in real mine measurements to compare collected and simulated profiles and determine whether damage to the ventilation system has been incurred during an emergency situation, the nature of the damage and the general location of the damage.

The subject of rapid excavation tunneling is one that is extremely important to the people in the Metropolitan area of Chicago. My personal observation is that it is also extremely important to the urban communities around the U.S., to many local and state governments, and to the public officials who are deeply concerned about state affairs and taxes. The Metropolitan Chicago area is in fact, (as are 40 other major urban areas in the U.S.) confronted at the present time with a very serious combined sewer overflow, drainage and pollution problem which accounts for an estimated 40% of the pollutional load on its waterway system. In response to this the District has to date spent some seven millions of dollars in an attempt to find the most economical solution available for the elimination of this problem. This study included extensive investigations of the geological strata, the quantity and quality of storm runoff to be dealt with, and the various methods of storage and treatment available. It has considered solving the overflow problem by a concept involving a series of tunnels, rock tunnels, shafts and storage areas which will collect, retain and subsequently treat that portion of the combined sewer overflow which can be handled in the most cost-effective and economical way, consistent with following the federal and state standards - with which we at the present time agree in principle.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. The NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) and Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) of the Land of Sky Regional Council joined efforts in 2000 to initiate a technically sound and practical program for the management of high-volume coal combustion by-products (CCBs) in North Carolina. The accumulation of CCBs from coal burning boilers throughout the state of North Carolina posed a substantial storage problem, and the area was overripe for an effective management program, which would be environmentally sustainable. In particular, the public utility generators had filled storage ponds on their properties, and the storage overload had grown to critical proportions. Much the same situation existed for paper mill biosolids, which were stored on site in landfill cells along with daily output of CCBs from the mill boilers. A conversion process via the patented pyro-process12 (US Patent No. 5,342,442) to produce synthetic light weight aggregates (LWA) from CCBs and paper mill sludge was conceived to process large quantities of both these waste materials. MRL and WRP initiated and formed a consortium that brought together academia, private industry and state agencies to evaluate the production of LWA by the pyro-process. The industry partners included representatives from the power companies, industrial ash generators, expediters for coal ash products, as well as concrete block manufacturers. It was important to welcome interested parties from not only the western North Carolina area and other parts of the state but also from neighboring states including Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Membership of this consortium evolved during the intervening years to include the following participants and supporters: Progress Energy Carolinas; Duke Energy; Santee Cooper; Full Circle Solutions; Land-of-Sky Regional Council; NC Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Ecusta Business Development Center; Blue Ridge Paper Products; Jackson Paper and Manufacturing Company; Miller Perlite; Appalachian Products; General Shale Brick; Metromont Materials; Small Business Technology Development Center of the University of North Carolina system and North Carolina State University The initial development program conducted at the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was to formulate an acceptable LWA product, which fulfilled user specifications for light weight concrete block and structural concrete application. Support work and program coordination efforts were furnished by retired technical volunteers in WRP. The work advanced steadily, using proven technologies well established in the mineral industry, to generate a very satisfactory LWA. The consortium then concluded that a more comprehensive CCB conversion program would have more appeal for full scale manufacture and commercialization, if a variety of products from CCB separation were generated. This product assortment would include bottom ash, low carbon fly ash, recovered carbon of high purity, as well as the synthetic LWA. The bottom ash would serve the concrete block market, the fly ash was in demand for ready-mix concrete, and the high carbon product could be pelletized and used as a fuel for reburn or by the steel industry, and the LWA was a sought-after component for light weight concrete applications. After scouting all these potential markets and finding them to be viable, the consortium then inaugurated an integrated pilot plant program for the CCB separation and conversion. The plan was organized in three (3) parts: (1) Phase I ? bench scale evaluation studies (2) Phase II continuous pilot plant evaluation and (3) Phase III ? conceptual commercial plant design including marketing efforts and attraction of business entrepreneurs to build a full scale manufacturing plant. Phase II would serve to validate the process in a continuous mode and produce substantial quantities of products for preliminary marketing efforts and for demonstration-of-use purposes. The consortium agreed to the name, CAROLINA ASH PRODUCTS, (CAP), for the integrated pilot plant program. The products generated might be designated with the CAP label as: bottom ash would be named CAP Granules, low carbon fly ash would become CAP Ash, recovered high carbon product would be CAP Carbon, and LWA would have the name CAP Stone. Phase II of the program processed 20 tons (18 t) of ponded ash from Progress Energy storage at a rate of 600 lb (271 kg) of raw ash per hour with favorable results. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Prior to committing laboratory research and development effort as well as support and coordination activities to this program, it was necessary to determine (1) the level of need for a freshly launched CCB reutilization program in this state and (2) what degree of versatility was necessary for such a process. State agency records and a survey of recent boiler operations indicated that in the state of North Carolina at least 77 facilities manage CCBs from their boiler operations. Despite continuing development efforts in more eastern parts of the state, the use of CCBs for commercial applications has not increased to a level which alleviates the need to store vast quantities in private monofills on the generator?s property. More than 1.25 million tons (1.13 million t) of CCBs are landfilled in NC annually, with 300,000 tons (271,985 t) per year generated in western NC alone. Many different boiler types, which span both very old units and those that are modern and efficient, were to be found. These included stoker-fired units, pulverized coal boilers, slag-tap furnaces, and fluidized bed combustion boilers covering a range of sizes. Any systems designed to separate CCB components from all these sources and convert them to useful secondary products would need broad processing latitude and flexibility. Up to the present there has been a paucity of research done in the western part of the state to find productive alternatives to storage in landfills. With tipping fees in our largest landfill now approaching $40 per ton ($44 per t) and escalating transportation fees (about $200 per truckload up to 40 tons, traveling a distance of 25 miles), the problem has become urgent both economically and ecologically. A well-designed, integrated wet process for CCB separation into value-added products had much potential to be less expensive than landfilling as well as to provide saleable materials with acceptable profit margins. These preliminary investigations also revealed that other major waste streams, in particular paper mill sludge and municipal and animal waste biosolids were important candidates for priority attention. Since these biosolids could furnish the organic component of a synthetic LWA product, they could be consumed as part of the same program. This added interest value to a growing list of partners to support and participate in the program.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a new 2500 STPD gold operation. The control system of the mine and milling operations are a hybrid of DCS (Distributed Control System) control and PLC (Programming Logic Controller) control. A DeltaV DCS system serves as the main control and operation platform while the PLCs operate a multitude of vendor specific packages. The communication backbone of the DCS system is a hybrid of star and ring fiber optic topology, which provides reliability and flexibility. The communication between the DCS and PLCs is typically facilitated by serial communication. This communication insures the integrity of the whole control system.

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) is used to analyze indivdual mineral fractions in heavy mineral sands. CCSEM is a fully automated particle analysis technique for the determination of physical and chemical properties of a large number of individual particles. CCSEM enables the precise and accurate determination of the modal abundances of individual mineral fractions (e.g. ilmenite, rutile, zircon, or garnet), their average chemical composition (and compositional variation), as well as their physical properties such as size (e.g. diameter and perimeter length) and shape (aspect ratio and circularity). A unique sample preparation procedure is used to produce representative polished sections from cylinders of raw sand samples such that thousands of grains are present in a polished cross section, but grains are not touching. The combination of this sample preparation technique with CCSEM enables the fully automated analysis of individual grains without the application of de-agglomeration or erosion steps to separate touching particles. Hence, CCSEM yields information representative of the entire area of analyzed grains without systematic bias due to neglect of rim areas by de-agglomeration or erosion steps. Therefore, the resulting data are determined with high accuracy, precision and statistical validity. Because the sample preparation is relatively straightforward, using raw sand samples, and all chemical and physical properties are determined in one analytical session per sample, CCSEM is a powerful cost and time efficient tool for characterizing chemical and physical properties of minerals in heavy mineral sand deposits.

Lebanon used a TBM for the firsttime to excavate a tunnel in the country. A main beam TBM, built in 1979, bored the 3.8 m (12.5-ft) diameter by 4,020 m (2.5-miles) Madiq Tunnel. The TBM bored through karstic terrain of dolomitic limestone, limestone and marly-limestone rock having near horizontal beds with more than twelve faults crossing the axis of the tunnel. The TBM also encountered more than six major karst features, filled with various combinations of boulders, clay, void space and water. The excavation through these collapsed-breccia zones drastically slowed the TBM?s progress. When complete, which the Madiq Tunnel is a part, the Kesrouane Water Project along the coast will bring fresh and irrigation waters to the parched and heavily populated region north of Beirut. The Norwegian Lake Tap Method was successfully used to tap into the side of Lake Dorothy 36.5 m (120') below the lake surface. The lake tap allows water to flowinto an access tunnel from the lake lowering the water elevation below its natural out-fall. When the lake reaches a predetermined elevation below the outfall, a 1.5 m (60?) valve in the tunnel will be shut and discharge from Lake Dorothy will stop temporarily allowing construction of a dam located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) downstream at Bart Lake. The lake tap and tunnel were one phase of the $64 million Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P), a private utility located in Juneau, AK. The Lake Dorothy portal site and tunnel are located approximately 25.7 km (16 miles) southeast of Juneau, AK, in the remote Tongass National Forest at an elevation of 701 m (2,300') above sea level in the mountains above the Taku Inlet. Thirty degree snow covered mountainsides and limited access by helicopter were just two of the many factors which challenged this unique project. The lake tap and tunnel development consisted of 250 m (820') of horizontal tun-nel, averaging 3.6 m x 3.6 m (12' × 12'), excavated using conventional drill and blast methods in highly competent Granodiorite and Tonalite rock, placement of one 3.9 m (13') long concrete plug, or bulkhead, located at the tunnel midpoint, and one 3 m (10') diameter lake tap into the side of Lake Dorothy. This paper will provide an analysis of the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the development of one of only a handful of lake taps in North America. AEL&P and contractor J. S. Redpath Corporation worked together to complete this critical project phase safely and on schedule, in a location accessible only by helicopter and plagued by constantly changing, harsh weather conditions. A strict schedule had to be maintained to ensure the timely operation of the downstream dam and power plant.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. The molecular structure of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in nonionic surfactants has been related to the wetting and dispersion of selected pigments. The nonionic surfactants included in this study are acetylenic diol based surfactants and ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The Langmuir model could be used to fit adsorption data. Further analysis of the data showed that the free energy of adsorption was a function of adsorption density of the surfactants at the interface. The change in free energy with adsorption density could be interpreted by considering a change in the orientation of the adsorbed molecules. Acetylenic diol based surfatants were found to have an area per molecule of 2-3 times that of similarly ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The wetting and dispersion properties of lamp black, a model hydrophobic surface, by these surfactants were investigated by contact angle measurements and particle size analysis. Acetylenic diol based surfactants with ethylene oxide contents between3.5 and 10 moles per molecule and alkyl phenol based surfactants with approximately 9 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule were found to provide superior wetting abilities. Longer ethylene oxide chains were required for superior dispersion capabilities within each family of surfactants. Complete wetting and dispersion was found to occur above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactants.

The earthmover tire shortage has been a case of bust and boom for the tire industry. Tire producers were unwilling to invest ahead of the mining boom. In their defense, though, the metals sector of the mining industry tends to be cyclic, tire manufacturers are not prescient. Until two years ago, low tire demand depressed prices. The incentive to invest in new, big-tire capacity was almost nonexistent, according to Prashant Prabhu, president of Michelin Earthmover Tire worldwide. “There has been very poor anticipation or a miscaluation of the amplitude of the (tire) demand on the part of just about everybody,” said Prabhu. What a turnaround. The earthmover tire market has grown by 30 percent over the past two years. Now there are not enough earth-mover tires and likely won’t be for the next two years. Goodyear said it was offering customers bias-ply tires when it could not supply enough radial-ply tires. Komatsu said it lost equipment sales because it could not provide the tires that customers requested. Volvo and Caterpillar said they are delivering some vehicles without tires, either promising tires later or leaving the customers – mine operators – to find their own rubber.

In the first half of the year, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the second half led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. This caused an oil shock that dampened the economy. So the US gross national product rose only 0.9% to $5,463 billion (US billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and to upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. The Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, alloca¬tions and supply expansion, lapsed on Oct. 20. So the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority for assuring that orders of the armed forces and defense atomic-energy programs were given priority treatment. Consumer demand strongly affects mining worldwide. US citizens carry significant debt, and large stocks of housing and consumer goods are already in place. Some 250 million persons have 188 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. Consequently, new car production fell 11 %, to 6.1 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8%, to 3.7 million units and new private housing starts fell 13% to 1.2 million units.

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

Accurate prediction of gold (or other metal) production from a heap leach operation is essential to the economic vitality of any such operation. However, this is also one of the most challenging issues facing managers of these facilities. Three approaches to modeling gold production from the Valley Leach Facility (VLF) at Anglogold’s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company are presented. Evolution of these modeling methods has been necessary as ore heights and volumes have increased. Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.
