Efficient recovery of titanium from titaniferous magnetite ores continues to be a promising, yet unrealised opportunity, despite significant occurrences of titaniferous magnetite deposits worldwide and the existence of established industrial-scale practices. Current smelting processes only recover iron and vanadium, while the titanium is discarded in the waste slag. These slags are stockpiled and present massive environmental challenges, while still containing value as residual iron, vanadium and titanium. The complex mineralisation of these deposits does not allow for a significant opportunity to separate the titanium and magnetite minerals through normal physical upgrading processes. An upgrading process is therefore required to derive economic value. An efficient process technology could create an opportunity to unlock all three valuable commodities. South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, the largest known deposit of its kind in the world, is known for the high vanadium content but is also associated with relatively high concentrations of titaniferous magnetite. The quality of the Bushveld Complex was one of the drivers for the establishment of the Highveld Steel and Vanadium Company in the mid-1960s. The unfortunate demise of Highveld Steel and Vanadium created an opportunity to review current practices and evaluate the best available process for this complex ore in the context of the three elements of interest. Past and current processes, the nature of these deposits and the potential to recover titanium are assessed to highlight the potential of fluxless smelting of titaniferous magnetite to produce a titania-rich slag as feedstock to the pigment, titanium metal industry in conjunction with recovery of iron and vanadium. Ilmenite smelting practices are proposed as a suitable alternative to achieve the goal, namely sustainable processing. "The Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is developing a coherent system of programs to aid in the full spectrum of activities arising in the planning of new as well as operating mining enterprises. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the design and application of two subsystems in the complex.One of these subsystems is an initial version of a production simulator. This program draws upon a model of a mining enterprise and simulates the operational and financial aspects of a set of alternative mine production plans.These plans are specified in terms of proposed sequences of operations. Details such as reserves, production rates, resource requirements and so on, are taken from the model.Physically, the model takes the form of a cross-referenced data base, maintained by means of a general file maintenance system which is another subsystem described.The paper concludes with a description and analysis of the first practical application of the two programs."

"The Kamoa-Kakula copper project—a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo—has been independently ranked as the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie. It is a very large, near-surface stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. A phased development approach is currently envisaged. The first phase of the project involves the development of a 6 Mt/a underground mine and surface processing complex (dual stream concentrator) at the Kakula deposit, a discovery announced in early 2016. The second phase involves an integrated 12 Mt/a two-stage development, beginning with initial production from the Kakula mine, to be followed by a subsequent, separate underground mining operation at the nearby Kansoko mine, along with the construction of a smelter. Project description and locationThe Kamoa–Kakula project comprises a newly discovered, very large stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas, located within the Central African Copperbelt in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa–Kakula project lies approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, an Ivanhoe subsidiary that currently owns 80% of the project. Zijin Mining owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, which it acquired from Ivanhoe in December 2015 for an aggregate cash consideration of US$412 million. The remaining 1% interest in Kamoa Holding is held by privately-owned Crystal River.The Kamoa–Kakula project consists of the Kamoa exploitation licences (exploitation permits 12873, 13025, and 13026, which cover an area of 397.4 km2) and one exploration licence (exploration permit 703 covering an area of 12.74 km2). The Kamoa exploitation licences, approved 20 August 2012, grant Kamoa Copper the right to explore for, develop, and exploit copper and other minerals, for an initial 30-year term, expiring on 19 August 2042. The leaching kinetics of cerium (Ce) and yttrium (Y) in sodium-hydroxide-digested non-magnetic coal fly ash using acetic acid were investigated. The variables analysed were pH, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L), and temperature. The results show that cerium and yttrium's maximum recovery was 57.33% and 58.36%, respectively, under leaching temperature of 90°C for Ce and 60°C for Y at pH of 1,74 and 10 g/mL solid-liquid ratio in 240 minutes. Increasing the leaching time to more than 120 minutes did not significantly improve the results. After the magnetic separation process, the ICP-OES analysis shows a slight increase in the concentration of cerium and yttrium on nonmagnetic components. The XRD and ICP-OES analysis for the sample before and after silicate digestion shows that 40% silicate was dissolved. The calculation of apparent activation energies of leaching using the Arrhenius law for the leaching of cerium and yttrium gives 22.72 kJ/mol and 35.84 kJ/mol, respectively. The kinetic leaching model of cerium and yttrium all fit Dickinson's new shrinking core model. The calculation results show that the leaching reaction is controlled by combining interface transfer and diffusion across the product layer.

In almost all branches of industry, machinery and equipment in operation cause vibration. Some sources of vibration affect only the operator’s hands, fingers, and arms, while others have adverse effects on the entire -body. Various types and numbers of machines are utilized in the mining sector, and operators with them are exposed to mechanical vibrations caused by the mining machinery they use. A field study was conducted to evaluate the vibration risks to the operators using mining machines in open pit mines. Vibration levels and whole-body vibration (WBV) measurements using various types brands, and models of construction equipment were evaluated in three different mines in the west of Turkey and compared to the the criteria specified in the EU 2002/44/EC directive and ISO 2631-1 (1997) standards. The results showed that operators using mining machinery for 8 hours were exposed to WBV levels below the EU limit (1.15 m/s2), while 44% of these operators were exposed to levels above the EU action limit (0.5 m/s2). Measurement data collected from the working environment and the recommended improvements that need to be made to reduce WBV exposures are presented.

"Prior to operating a non-recovery coke pilot plant, it was critical to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 coal cake into the oven. Various compaction parameters were verified and established on a small laboratory-scale compaction machine to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability. These parameters include cake density, cake surface moisture, transverse strength (force applied perpendicular to the original compacted coal cake layers), and applied force to the coal cake. This work determined the behavioural characteristics of the coal while being compacted either with a full-sized or a 1/3-sized compaction plate in a 9 kg capacity mould. Two different coals were evaluated, namely Waterberg semi-soft coking coal (sscc) and Oaky North hard coking coal.The target wet cake density of 1 100 kg/m3 (79% of 1 400 kg/m3 relative density) was achieved for Waterberg sscc, with a particle size d50 varying between 0.6 mm and 1 mm, utilizing the 1/3-sized compaction plate in the laboratory-scale set-up, with 11.6% surface moisture and 92.2 t/m2 commercial equivalent applied force. For Oaky North hard coking coal, a wet cake density of 1 189 kg/m3 (85% of 1 400 kg/m3 relative density) was achieved at a surface moisture content of 12.3% and at a lower applied force than that for Waterberg sscc, i.e. 78.5 t/m2.Coal cakes of acceptable strength, and therefore sufficient stability for further processing, were obtained for all materials evaluated during this study.Further studies should be conducted to determine the effect of zeta potential during the compaction of coals.IntroductionExxaro Resources has successfully installed and commissioned a world-class stamp-charging horizontal 1 t electrically-heated pilot-scale coke oven at its Metallurgy Services facility. Prior to operating the coke non-recovery pilot plant, it is essential to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 coal cake into the oven. The design of Exxaro’s pilot plant is such that the coal cake is pushed inside the oven by means of a pusher plate, rather than through a ‘spoon’ feed mechanism, such as is found in industrial horizontal coke ovens. The pusher plate loading mechanism dictates that the coal cake should possess high stability and inherent strength during loading into the oven, owing to frictional forces exerted by the oven floor. In order to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability, various compaction parameters needed to be verified and established on a small laboratory-scale compaction machine."

Professor H.R. Philips was born in South Wales. After graduating with a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Bristol, he joined the National Coal Board's management training programme. Mr B. Moore was born in Coventry, England. He matriculated at Bablake School and then atended Birmingham University, obtaining a B.Sc. Mining Engineering degree in 1953. Professor J .S.J. (J annie) van Deventer matriculated at Swelendam High School. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, and obtained the degrees of Hons. B. Ing. in 1978 and Ph.D. (Ing.) in 1985. Professor M.D. Brayshaw received most of his education in England but obtained his Ph.D. (Eng.) at the University of Natal. One of the most challenging aspects in semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (SMIPCC) system design is determining the optimum depth at which to change from a purely truck-based haulage system to a conveyor-based haulage system. We used scenario analysis to determine the optimum transition depth between a truck and shovel (TS) system and a SMIPCC system. Traditional pit-limit algorithms were used to generate the final pit limit on a copper deposit, which was then divided into four pushbacks. The final operating pushbacks (phases) were designed for both TS and SMIPCC. The end depths for each phase are viewed as candidate transition points to switch from the TS to SMIPCC haulage system. Economic calculations were applied for five different scenarios, including adopting SMIPCC from the outset (pure SMIPCC), after the first, second, and third phases, and finally not using the SMIPCC system (pure TS) at all. The analysis indicates that the second scenario, at a depth of 335 m, results in the lowest cumulative discounted cost (CDC). In this case, the CDC is 17.6% lower than that for the pure TS scenario and 10.7% lower than for the pure SMIPCC system scenario.

This study proposes a new approach to reduce the environmental impact during surface mining by improving environmental factors through the incorporation of carbon footprint into strategic mine planning. Two key variables were analysed by contrasting and comparing the baseline and optimised models generated. These variables include net present value, which helps determine the financial feasibility of the mining models and their carbon emissions. The variables were analysed by using linear regression, Spearman’s correlation, a P-value hypothesis, and an exponential decay test. Results show that at Mine A the projected net present value was 62% higher than when running a baseline model. Furthermore, the net present value from the baseline model portrayed a high rate of decay at 0.667 versus 0.118 from the optimised model. This indicates the baseline model’s sensitivity to long-term project timelines and fluctuating markets. The optimised method presents an opportunity to manage emissions during the high operational costs phases. It is represented by a 31% improvement in carbon emissions during the periods of high operational costs, whilst maintaining a positive net present value when compared with the baseline model. It was shown that the optimised model presents a better chance of achieving financial feasibility and balancing environmental impact, thereby ensuring that Mine A can align with the environmental aspect of economic, social, and governance principles through lowering the carbon footprint resulting from its hauling operations.

"SynopsisCapital cost estimates are important in decisions on whether a project will be approved, mothballed, or abandoned. In South Africa, junior coal miners do not have extensive databases of historical projects from which to estimate capital costs. The purpose of this paper is to establish formulae that can be used for estimating capital costs of developing coal mines in a coal-producing country, using South Africa as a case study. The costs are estimated to an error of magnitude level of -30% to +50%, which is suitable for a concept study level, using a parametric estimation technique. The study uses data from completed coal mining projects from selected coal-producing countries. Three formulae are developed and presented for estimating capital costs of underground bord and pillar, surface shovel and truck, and dragline operations.IntroductionCapital cost estimates play a critical role in deciding whether projects will proceed, be delayed, or abandoned. It is therefore important that capital cost estimates are carried out accurately as determined by the estimation guidelines based on the level of estimation conducted (Shafiee and Topal, 2012). The lack of literature on estimation of capital costs in many coal mining countries is adversely affecting junior coal miners, since they do not have an extensive database of historical projects on which to base estimations. In South Africa, the difficulty in estimating capital costs is attributable to lack of publicly available data on completed South African mining projects (Hall, 2013)."

Methods for treating and processing refractory gold ores are well established. However, what is less well understood is how the formation of the gold-bearing deposits affects gold processing and extraction. In order to evaluate the effect of ore genesis on gold extraction a number of South African gold deposits were studied. These included complex Pilgrim’s Rest samples as well as refractory Fairview, Barbrook, and Consolidated Murchison samples. We found the refractory nature of gold ores is controlled by a limited number of well-understood mineralogical factors. Solid solution gold is linked to low temperature and pressure conditions in fine-grained sedimentary lithologies, while reactive pyrrhotite can form from hydrothermal fluids associated with mafic magmatic rocks. These formational controls can be used to identify and avoid complex deposits at a desktop study phase, or address and reduce complications further along the pipeline using early mineralogical studies.

Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. The South African narrow reef hard rock mining industry has been stuck in a time warp with relatively little change in the mining process in the last century. This paper presents a methodology on how to implement change in narrow reef hard rock mining. It then explores a number of technologies that have been introduced into this mining industry and the impact that they have had on the mining process. The author then presents his view on whether the defined change process has been followed and sets out to identify the most critical aspect of ensuring that change is successfully implemented. Future demand will also be speculated on.

The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.

In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. The accurate estimation of peak particle velocity (PPV) is crucial during the design of bench blasting operations in open pit mines, since the vibrations caused by blasting can significantly affect the integrity of nearby buildings and other structures. Conventional models used to predict blast-induced vibrations are not capable of capturing nonlinear relationships between the different blasting-related parameters. Soft computing techniques, i.e., techniques that are founded on the principles of artificial intelligence, effectively model these complexities. In this paper, we use the random forest (RF) algorithm to develop a model to predict blast-induced ground vibrations from bench blasting using 48 data records. The model was trained and tested using WEKA datamining software. To build this model, a feature selection process using several combinations of Attribute Evaluators and Search Methods under the WEKA Select Attributes tab was performed. The correlation coefficient of the actual data and RF model-predicted data was 0.95, and the weighted average of the relative absolute error (RAE) was 10.9%. The RF model performance was also compared to the equivalent-path-based (EPB) equation on the testing data-set, and it was seen that the RF model can effectively be used to predict PPV. The study also demonstrates that the EPB equation is a suitable empirical method for predicting PPV.

The ability to perform three dimensional imaging at micron-scale resolution of real mineral floc sediments and structures using commercially available Micro X-ray Tomography (XMT) instrumentation can be used for the analysis of aggregates and granules, liberation and dewatering of sediments. This paper presents are view of recent work by the authors relevant to the mining and minerals industries. It covers three main topics: X-ray imaging of agglomerates and multi-component mineralic particles,, permeability of sediments, and dissolution of granules with potential application to heap leaching.

The susceptibility of a low-alloy steel that has been hardened and tempered-826 M40 (EN26)-to embrittlement by strain aging during service was simulated by artificial aging of specimens at 100°C. It was found that the brittle transition temperature of both monotonic and cyclically strained material was increased by only about 25°C as a result of strain aging. It is concluded that the susceptibility of low-alloy steels in the hardened, tempered condition is less than that of low-carbon steel, and that such steels qualify for exemption of the periodic 'annealing' required by the Mines and Works Act.

INFACON is of special significance to people in South Africa who are interested in ferro-alloys, because it was in South Africa that the idea of regular international congresses on ferro-alloys was conceived and developed. INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. The principal objective of this investigation was to conduct a thorough literature review on the status of project readiness mechanisms, tools, techniques, and frameworks for mining projects. The review aimed at identifying common readiness evaluation criteria as well as potential shortcomings that prevent the establishment of a generalizable project readiness index. The literature review included a general overview of capital project performances and the importance of project readiness assessments to improve project delivery success. The study then progressed towards literature involving mining projects and how this differs from infrastructure and industrial project assessments. The paper concludes by summarizing the current state of mining project readiness assessments, the unique and differentiating factors to be considered, and suggests recommendations towards the development of generalizable readiness assessment criteria for mining projects.
