"INTRODUCTION The metallurgical-research program of the Bureau of Mines .for the past 15 years has emphasized the production of high-purity nonferreus metals through the utilization of our available resources, ores, reducing agents, fuel, and power.Ore dressing or concentration, has always been a vitally important part of nonferrous metallurgy, and the Bureau continues to give most of its attention to it. In the field of the traditional nonferrous metals, the Bureau staff has developed natural-gas reduction of zinc, the application of glomerule technique to preparing high-grade lead concentrates for Scotch-hearth smelting, the production of electrolytic antimony from precious metal-bearing ores, and the recovery of nickel from nickel-chrome-iron ores.In the field of light metals, the Bureau staff has developed several improvements in both magnesium and aluminum production and in alloys of these metals. In the so-called ""rare-metal"" field, Bureau activities have included the production of pure ductile titanium on a larger scale than heretofore attempted, the electrolytic production of cobalt, chromium, and manganese which may now take their proper places as bases for nonferrous alloys as well -as ingredients of special steels. The Bureau staff has investigated many of these new alloys. Investigations of methods of recovering vanadium from its low-grade domestic ores have given promising results. Methods for the preparation of metallic zirconium have been improved."

This is the third report published by the Bureau of Mines concerning the washability of Black Creek coal. Both of the former reports5/6/ dealt with the Black Creek coal at the Bradford mine, Dixiana, Ala., near the northeastern extremity of the Warrior field, whereas the present report is based on float-and-sink tests of coal from what is presumably the Black Creek bed near the southern extremity of the field. Although the Yolande Coal & Coke Co., owners of the property at Yolanda No. 6 slope, consider this opening to be on the Black Creek bed, the authors do not feel that there is as yet positive proof that this correlation is correct. There has been little or no development of the Black Creek bed in the Yolande Basin in the past, and a posy-tine identification of the bed at Yolande No. o will have to await further exploration and development. The Yolande No. 6 is an exploration slope 3/4 mile north of Rockcastle, Ala. The slope is approximately 400 feet from top to bottom on a dip of 18° As fax as the authors can ascertain, coal has never been produced commercially from the Black Creek bed in the southwestern part of the Warrior field. Exploration work in the past has indicated that the Black Creek coal in. this area is extremely friable and high in sulfur. Extreme friability would naturally discourage its' use as a domestic and railroad fuel, and high sulfur content would be a disasvantage in its use for coking coal. The present study of this coal has been made with particular reference to sulfur elimination on the assumption that it would make a good coking coal provided enough of the sulfur could be eliminated by washing.

This task report provides the process technology, preliminary design, capital and operating costs for a 25 TPD pilot plant to produce cell-grade alumina using a clay/hydrochloric acid extraction - HCI gas induced crystallization process. The report consists of six volumes: I - Process Technology and Costs; II and III - Equipment Lists, Specifications and Quotations; IV and V - General Specifications; VI - Drawings. The process was selected by the Bureau of Mines as the more promising method to produce cell-grade alumina from clay based on the results of the two previous task reports under this contract: Task I - Comparison of Six Processes (alunite, anorthosite-lime sinter, clay/sulfurous acid, clay/nitric acid, clay/hydrochloric acid evaporative and gas-induced crystallization) and Task 2 - Comparison of Two Processes (clay/nitric acid and clay/hydrochloric acid - gas induced (crystallization). The pilot plant process utilizes a unique dual crystallization process to produce aluminum-chloride-hexahydrate crystals having sufficient purity when decomposed to meet stringent alumina product specifications. The size of the 25 TPD pilot plant has been selected to permit scale-up to commercial size plants of equipment, technical and economic parameters. The capital cost estimate for the pilot plant, exclusive of fee and escalation, for a southeastern U.S. location is $52,311,000 expressed in 1979 dollars. The total time required to construct the pilot plant including engineering and procurement is 32 months. The operating cost to produce the estimated 9,000 tons of alumina required for testing in Hall cells is $40,91[0],190 expressed in 1979 dollars.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a regulated, intrinsically safe, rechargeable power supply for portable electronic equipment for underground use. The regulated output is ideal for microprocessor power requirements and is suited for operation in hazardous environments. Two rechargeable, sealed batteries are contained within the power supply. Provisions are made to use an external source of power if these batteries fail. Provisions are also made to charge these internal batteries when needed. The circuit is composed of three main circuits: the main regulator circuit, the input protection circuit, and the output protection circuit. The main regulator circuit provides remote voltage sensing, current sensing, fault monitoring, and internal thermal protection. The input protection circuit checks for excessive input current and low battery conditions. The output protection circuit contains two overvoltage detection devices. Schematics, a parts list, and a calibration procedure are provided in this report to enable readers to fabricate the power supply.

This report describes an investigation in which we used iron-doped diesel fuel to generate metal-bearing diesel particles and a subsequent analysis of the particles using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). For this study, DPM was generated by a 1.5-L diesel engine and the fuel was doped with ferrocene to enhance the level of iron in the system. The exhaust particles were collected on TEM grids and analyzed using the Philips CM12 TEM/EDS instrument. Results show that when the iron-to-carbon (soot) ratio (Fe/C) in the engine is low, the exhaust particles have morphologies similar to those for the undoped case, but at a threshold Fe/C value of 0.013 (for this engine), homogeneously nucleated metallic nanoparticles are formed and begin agglomerating. The number and size of these nanoparticles increase with level of doping. Metal-bearing particles that span a wider size range are also formed. Agglomeration of metallic and carbon particles is observed in two distinct modes: attachment of iron primary particles (5–10 nm in diameter) to carbon agglomerates, and coagulation of iron agglomerates (20–200 nm in diameter) with carbon agglomerates. Results of this work imply that as new engine technologies reduce soot levels in the engine and/or levels of trace metals in the fuel are increased, the generation of metallic nanoparticles may ensue, creating a potential health concern. The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Considerations in the mine shaft layout, design, sinking, outfitting, testing and commissioning are set forth against the background of requirements of applicable parts of Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30.

This report describes the second phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected synthetic slag compositions in the Ti02 -A1203 -FeO-Si02 -CaO-MgO system. Both the hot-stage microscope and the strip furnace (melting-holding-quenching technique) were used during test procedure to determine the effects of CaO, MgO, and SiO2 on the liquidus temperature of slags. The liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,241° to 1,900° C. The lowest liquidus temperature for each Ti02 plus A1203 plus FeO weight-percent generally occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. In this investigation substitution of either CaO or MgO for SiO2 and MgO for CaO raised the liquidus temperature of more than 50 percent of the reported base slags when Ti02, A1203, and FeO contents were held constant. The results of this investigation may serve as guidelines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetite concentrates or ores.

In June, 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, undertook a 9-day evaluation of the tin resource potential of the Sleitat Mountain tin deposit. Significant tin-tungsten mineralization is associated with quartz-topaz-white mica-tourmaline greisen alteration of a multi-unit, 57 Ma, peraluminous, granite stock which intrudes Cretaceous Kuskokwim Group flysch deposits. The granite comprises marginal biotite-, intermediate biotite-muscovite-, and central zinnwaldite-granite units, interpreted as a zoned alteration system. Major vein mineralization is confined to two east-west-trending zones of steeply oriented tabular lenses of greisen interleaved with mildly altered granite. Cassiterite is the dominant ore mineral while arsenopyrite, loellingite, wolframite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and bismuth-oxides are present in minor to trace amounts. The north and south greisen zones are estimated to contain an inferred resource of 128 to 212 million lbs Sn in 28.6 million st of mineralized rock. An 1,800-lb representative bulk sample contained 0.37% Sn, 0.04% W and 17 ppm Ag and is considered an average grade estimate for the deposit. Drill testing by Cominco Alaska Exploration indicates that substantial widths of high-grade tin mineralization are included within the lower grade disseminated mineralization. Depth of deposit erosion is substantial and there exists a high probability for placer tin deposits.

Many oil-producing formations contain significant amounts of clay. Because of the large surface area and reactivity of such surfaces, the response of the formations to various recovery processes may be dominated by the reactions of fine-grained minerals, including clay minerals, in the formations. Thus, the success or failure of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods may be controlled to a large extent by the amount and nature of these minerals in the formations to which the methods are being applied. One of the deterrents to the successful application of chemical EOR methods is the loss of chemicals injected into the formation, to non-oil recovery processes. These chemical loss processes include adsorption onto mineral surfaces, chemical reactions with rock and fluids in the formations, possibly leading to precipitation and plugging of the formation, and trapping of chemicals in parts of the rock structure so that they become unavailable for displacing oil. Chemicals that may be injected include surfactants, polymers and caustic solutions which react with organic acids in the crude oil to produce surfactants in-situ. These losses are most pronounced in fine-grained reservoir rocks containing substantial amounts of clays.

"After many years of safety activity in the United States in one form or another it becomes increasingly evident to those in contact with safety work that to achieve continuous good results in accident prevention there must be an aggressive organization behind the safety movement at each mine with fairly definite plan and policy. A study of the methods used by various companies and the results they have attained will be of value to the common cause of safety promotion.A study has been made of the safety records of the Menominee iron range in the Lake Superior district, and of data from the county mine inspector's report. Several companies on this iron range that have attained a certain measure of success in their work of accident prevention have given data, and a summary of their safety methods is presented.The Menominee iron range of Michigan lies in the southern portion of the upper peninsula of Michigan, bordering on Wisconsin. It consists of two main. divisions--the West Menominee Range, situated in Iron County in the vicinity of Iron River and Crystal Palls, and the East Menominee range situated in Dickinson County in the neighborhood or iron Mountain, Mich. The mines about Iron River and Crystal Falls are peculiarly subject to fires in a carbonaceous, sulphur-bearing black slate which appears in the footwall. This gives considerable trouble because fires in this material start from spontaneous heating. The methods of mining are top slicing and open stoping, working on benches along the sides of the stopes. The character of the ground varies from medium Soft ore to relatively hard ore which permits open stoping. Approximately one-third of the operating mines are equipped with a fan for main mechanical ventilation. The remainder are ventilated by natural draft. The East Menominee range is the older, top slicing having been used there for a number of years, and the timber mats have boon well developed. In common with all districts, some companies pay more attention to safety than others, although, those which do riot have the best records do pay some attention to safety.During the past three years the annual production per man employed has remained about constant, but in many mines a general decrease is shown in the accident record. The variation in the results attained can be ascribed mainly to the earnestness with which accident-prevention work is pursued, essentially regardless of the method of mining used. This is shown to be generally true, because the record indicates a steady decrease in one mine with an active safety department, while in adjoining mines with the same kind of ground and method of mining but where not such intensive attention has been paid to safety work, the accident record is high."

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular industry or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a particular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condensing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. A threefold increase in water use by the mineral industry by 1985 is forecast.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. Coal is one of our basic sources of energy (heat, power, light) and an essential raw material for most metallurgical processing. More than two-thirds of the electricity currently produced by thermal powerplants in the United States is generated by coal, and it is expected that coal will continue to be the major fuel used for this application at least through the 1970's. Coke produced from bituminous coking coal is the principal fuel of iron blast furnaces, and unless ironmaking methods change greatly, coal will continue to maintain a dominant role in iron-ore processing and steel manufacturing for many years. Export markets are expected to increase also, adding to the overall increased demand for coal. Accompanying the increased total requirement, however, will be an ever-increasing demand for higher quality coals, specifically, coals of low sulfur content. Except for special-purpose coals such as those used for the production if coke and ceramics where impurities in the fuel contaminate the end product, the amount of sulfur in coal has been only a minor consideration in the selection of a particular coal for fuel. Major considerations, particularly for the coals used to generate electric power, have been availability and cost. An increased national concern for control of air pollution, however, particularly that resulting from the emission of sulfur oxides in stack gases to the atmosphere, has led to more rigid specifications on coal quality, and the sulfur content of coals will become increasingly more important in the future.

Reports technical progress in designing four machines to be used in mining coal underground, applying innovative concepts at the design stage (instead of add-ons). A study phase was followed by design activity, including calculations supporting the designs. Scale models of three machines were built, and a full-scale mock-up of the conventional loader was used to measure human factors parameters.

Mechanized dirt-moving equipment has greatly increased the scope of prospect trenching by lowering the costs and increasing the speed of such work. Where the soil covering was more than 3 or 4 feet deep, operators were quickly discouraged and abandoned surface exploration in favor of shaft sinking, drifting, or diamond drilling; wildcat trenching was seldom undertaken, even where the soil covering was thin. Although power shovels, trench diggers, and draglines are useful under special conditions, caterpillar-mounted angledozers will usually do the same type of work and have a far wider range of adaptability. They are therefore incomparably the most generally useful equipment for the purpose. Since 199 the Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a widespread search for minerals useful to the war program; this work required a great deal of pioneer exploration in areas where known outcrops were marginal or subcommercial by pre-war standards. Engineers in charge of field operations were quick to perceive the applicability of mechanized trenching on a fairly large scale, particularly in the Northwestern States, where completely exposed vein-outcrops are rare. Probably no other organization to date has done a comparable amount of angledozer prospect trenching under such a wide range of conditions. The following comments and accompanying cost tables are based on work performed chiefly in Idaho, under a variety of physical and climatic conditions. The most important applications of the angledozer for such work may be described under three heads:

Results of a comprehensive study of the absolute spectral radiance of the infrared emissions from methane-air explosions are reported. The spectral growth of these expanding flames were recorded with a time resolution of 1 msec in the spectral range of 1.7 to 5.0 µm. Time-resolved spectra were obtained for methane-air mixtures as a function of stoichiometry, nitrogen dilution, and Halon dilution, in a 9-liter vessel under different venting conditions. Data are also presented for coal dust-air explosions. Temperatures, obtained from the absolute radiances and from a band ratio technique for methane-air, are internally consistent and are generally 50° to 200°K below adiabatic flame temperatures. All near limit mixtures gave essentially the same flame temperatures (1,500° to 1,600° K) regardless of whether the limit was obtained by dilution with excess air, excess methane, excess nitrogen, or Halon. The coal dust explosion spectrum is essentially a blackbody continuum at 1,500° K with some selective emission at 4.4 µm from hotter CO2. The data are analyzed in terms of the radiative dynamics of a sperically expanding flame zone. The importance of radiative transport is assessed. An equation is derived which relates the instantaneous fraction of combustion power radiated to adiabatic variables.

Blast furnace coal injection tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with a consortium of 22 steel companies in 1963-1964 are described. These tests were part of a program of extensive investigation of auxiliary fuel injection in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace located at Bruceton, PA. Seventeen coal tests are described on various coals ranging from anthracite to subbituminous. Factors affecting maximum rates of injection were studied. These included coal size, coal type, and oxygen enrichment. The effect of high sulfur content coal and the means to control metal sulfur were investigated. An epilogue briefly describing the commercial experience with coal injection from 1960 to the present has been included.

A procedure, which can be performed in the field by nonanalytical personnel, is given for sensitive spot tests for detecting tellurium or selenium. The expressed need of a field test for detecting small amounts of tellurium, which may be accompanied by relatively large amounts of selenium, has led to the development of this method. Tellurium search has been impeded by the lack of a satisfactory test from the standpoint of sensitivity and specificity. A quantitative laboratory method exists, but it is expensive and relatively laborious. Several other qualitative tests are known, but they require unstable solutions, which must be freshly prepared for use, and a greater variety of laboratory equipment. The particular advantages of the test described are its simplicity and the stability of the reagents required, there-fore is is well adapted for field use. Also, this test was found to be of practical use in the analytical laboratory when screening samples, thereby reducing analytical costs. The roughly quantitative interpretation of the results can save time by indicating the approximate size of the sample taken for a quantitative determination.
