Solvent extraction techniques were used to determine the extraction sequence of yttrium and the rare-earth elements in an amine solvent extraction system. Single-stage extraction with Primene 81-R resulted in separation factors of 3.8 between yttrium and dysprosium and 25 between yttrium and cerium. Yttrium was concentrated in the aqueous phase. EDTA and DTPA, as aqueous phase counterextractants, enhance separation factors in mine-rare-earth sulfate systems. Yttrium separation from heavy rare-earth elements exhibits marked sensitivity to the position of yttrium in the selectivity scale of the rare-earth elements with the sequestrants. Yttrium-ytterbium separation is more effective with EDTA, whereas yttrium-dysprosium separation is more effectively increased with DTPA.

This paper describing the milling practice at the Coniaurum Mine is one of a series of papers on milling methods, practice, and costs prepared in cooperation with an published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The 500-ton will of the Coniaurum Mines (Ltd.) is located at approximately the center of the company's property and a little more than a mile from the town of Schumacher, Ontario. The main shaft through which all the ore is heisted is adjacent to the mill so that the ore hoisted in a 3-ton skip is dumped directly into a 15-ton bin at the crusher.

A semiquantitative test for the presence and identification of cesium and rubidium in rocks, clays, and mineral waters has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The test can be used in the field, as a guide for the prospector, geologist, or mining engineer engaged in location or development [w]ork. It comprises two simple spot tests of a solution prepared from the [m]ineral sample. Phosphomolybdic acid, added to a drop of the test solution, [d]etects cesium, rubidium, and potassium in quantities as low as 60 parts per [m]illion. Silicomolybdic acid, added to a second drop of test solution, enables the operator to distinguish between cesium and/or rubidium and potassium. Test procedures, equipment requirements, and limitations of the method are described in this report. Cesium and rubidium were discovered in 1860 and 1861 by Bunsen and Kirchhoff with a spectroscope. The elements usually occur together, particularly in granite and granitic pegmatites. Rubidium does not occur as an essential constituent of any known mineral, yet it is found as a minor element in so many minerals that rubidium is 16th in abundance in the earth's crust. Cesium, which ranks as the 37th most abundant element, is the principal component of pollucite and a minor element in a wide variety of minerals.

This report describes preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines to develop a procedure for extracting the fluorine from low-grade fluorspar ores in which the CaF2 particles are finely locked in the calcite matrix. A combination of flotation beneficiation and pyrohydrolysis is applied to recover and to liberate the fluorine. Flotation of a finely locked high-calcite fluorspar ore containing only 11.7 pct CaF2 recovered over 92 pct of the fluorspar at a grade of 51 to 52 pct CaF2. Pyrohydrolysis of the flotation concentrate liberated nearly 90 pct of the fluorine as aqueous HF. By this procedure over 80 pct of the fluorine contained in the original ore was extracted.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. This investigation was conducted jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to obtain further information on the source and economic possibilities of the copper mineralization exposed on the Copper Giant group of claims, Ajo mining district, Pima County, Ariz. The Copper Giant group of claims was first brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Joseph Hunter (deceased), Phoenix, Ariz., part owner of the claims. In December 1942 these claims, and an adjoining group, were investigated by T. C. Denton, mining engineer, formerly with the Bureau of Mines, and Nels P. Peterson, geologist, Federal Geological Survey. It was concluded the area could not be considered as a source of copper for immed- iate emergency needs and that further investigation of the area, at the time, was not warranted. In the spring of 1948 the lessee, J. H. Greenway Albert, requested Bureau of Mines assistance in developing the property. J. H. Hedges, former chief, Tucson Branch, Mining Division, and Lincoln A. Stewart, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, made a cursory examination of the property and noted that at numerous places, low-grade copper mineralization appeared on fractures and bedding of the Locomotive fanglomerate and Ajo volcanics, which are thought to be of Tertiary age. During the period of May 11 through 14, 1949, Bureau of Mines engineers3 mapped and sampled two areas of mineral- ization. On June 2 and 3, 1949, the areas selected by the Bureau and three other nearby mineralized areas were investigated by C. A. Anderson and R. S. Cannon, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey. As a result of these examina- tions, further investigation of certain areas was believed to be merited. The Copper Giant area was selected as the most favorable in which to carry out exploratory and development work. The field work on the project was started in October 1949 and completed in December 1949. It consisted of road building, trenching, sampling, topo- graphic and geologic mapping, diamond drilling, and logging of core. Samples taken on the project and during preliminary examinations totaled 64, of which 63 were surface samples. Diamond drilling, started October 10 and completed December 7, consisted of two holes for a total depth of 1,542 feet.

The Bureau of Mines has recently identified five major factors that contribute to high respirable dust levels on the six U.S. longwall faces having the most difficulty complying with Federal dust standards: (1) a poorly structured cutting sequence, (2) a poorly designed external water spray system, (3) marginal waterflow to the cutting drums, (4) minimal controls at the stage loader and crusher, and (5) the lack of effective controls for dust generated during support advance. The results of this survey illustrate the need to address all the major sources of longwall dust generation and the need for mine operators to implement a variety of control procedures to assure compliance. The Bureau of Mines will continue to assist mine operators in implementing improved dust controls and will work to identify and evaluate controls for dust generated during support advance.

Because power system topographies for surface coal mines are significantly different from those for underground coal mines, the requirements for ground wire monitors for surface systems are somewhat different. This paper analyzes the problems faced by high-voltage ground wire monitors. Based on this analysis, some design requirements for monitors are suggested. Finally, results from laboratory evaluation of some of the commercially available monitors are presented.

Electrowinning molybdenum from oxide feed materials dissolved in a variety of molten baths was investigated . A NaCl - NaF - Na₂ B₁ O -Mo0, system operating at 1,000 ° C in a cell without a protective atmosphere gave the best current efficiency , metal - to - cathode adherence , and purity of electrowon Technical - grade molybdic oxide , containing associated impurities of aluminum , iron , copper , silicon , and tungsten in combined quantities of 10 percent , was used as feed material to produce dendritic crystals of molybdenum metal containing less than 0.5 percent total base metal , carbon , and oxygen impurities . Arc - melting molybdenum electrowon from either chemically pure or commercial - grade Mo0, produced ingots that contained less than 0.1 percent total impurities and had hardness readings of 168 to 200 Vhn .

"IntroductionIn a typical incremental loading test, the AE activity increases rapidly in the initial stage of the loading. It is associated with initial closure under compression of favorably oriented cracks already present, together with sliding of crack faces against each other /1/. After the initial stage, crack closure and movement largely cease and the AE activity drops to a barely detectable level /2/. In the final stage of loading test, cracking associated with the onset of inelastic deformation' occurs, and the rate of AE rapidly increases /3/ indicating an increase in the •number of events associated with higher number of microcracks. To understand better primary fragmentation process, Anderson and Ruzzi conducted tests to identify a practical method of monitoring fracture development in rock, as caused by an excavation tool /4/. They proved that a relationship existed between the AE activity, generated during fracturing and the amount of fracture surface area created.A process of fragmentation, demonstrated by conical bits acting orthogonal to the flat surface of block of coal specimen with and without lateral confining pressure is presented here. The monitoring of AE during the fracturing process of rock/coal has been a very useful indirect method in studying fracture mechanism.Specimen PreparationLarge blocks of Waynesburg coal were obtained from a surface mine. These blocks were then out and molded to approximate dimensions of 25.4 x 25.4 x 15.2 'an (10 x 10 x 6 in.). These specimens were instrumented with three strain gages in a 45 degree rosette. One was mounted parallel to the bedding plane direction, another was tinted at an angle of 45 degree from the bedding plane direction and the third was mounted perpendicular to the bedding .plane direction. Each of the three strain gages were set 5.1 an (2 in.) away from the impact point.Typical Test ProcedureIn a typical experiment, the specimen was placed in the confining chamber.Predetermined equivalent in-situ stresses were applied to the specimen by using two sets of hydraulic cylinders. Two 1 in. thick steel plates ware positioned between the sample and the hydraulic cylinders in order to distribute the pressure uniformly over the whole surface of the specimen. The LVDT null position was adjusted with respect to the coal face. After setting the LVDT, the bit and associated weight was lifted to a predetermined height (equivalent to a predetermined kinetic energy) by a win. The three strain gages were balanced using the signal conditioner and the output was recorded by a 6 channel strip chart recorder. The experimental set-up is shown in Figure 1."

This paper deals with the second phase of an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Part 1 dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entries and was issued as Serial 2621 of the Bureau of Mines, in July 1924. Description of tests. After the resistance of an unobstructed entry to flow of air had been determined by tests in the Experiment mine, mine cars were; run into the test section in various arrangements and the increase in resistance was determined. The cars used were of the wooden type with loose end gate, and would hold about one ton of coal, level full. They were 7 feet long. 4 feet 2 inches wide above the wheels, 3 feet high, and had a cross-sectional area of approximately 10 square feet. The average area of the entry was about 57 square feet, the ratio of unobstructed to total area being about 17.6 per cent. The track gage was 42 inches and the wheel-base 20 inches.

"INTRODUCTION During July and August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Trego lead-zinc mine, near the town of Platteville in Grart County, Wis. as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the nation's war program.The Bureau of Mines completed eight churn-drill holes and sampled mineralized faces in the mine workings to determine if further exploitation was justified in an area between the mine and a zone previously drilled to the east.Following the investigation described herein, intermittent operations were resumed. Except where otherwise stated, this report describes conditions only to the time of completion of the Bureau of Mines investigations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In view of some of the outstanding properties of chromium, considerable effort has been made in recent years to prepare the high-purity metal in ductile form. The object of this investigation was to obtain such metal by electrolysis of chromic acid solutions and to determine the conditions that yield optimum results. The apparatus is described, as well as the parameters that received consideration. Ion-exchange resins were employed to remove cation impurities from the electrolyte. Tensile specimens prepared from the electrodeposits by arc melting, press forging, swaging, and drawing, were ductile at room temperature. INTRODUCTION Metallic chromium displays an exceptionally high resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and wear at elevated temperatures. Although these properties are utilized to some extent when chromium is alloyed with other metals, such as in stainless steels, high-chromium alloys and pure chromium are not employed as engineering materials because of a serious lack of ductility and impact resistance at room temperature. Because high-chromium alloys appear promising as refractory metals for applications such as in gas turbines, much interest has been shown recently in the preparation of uniformly ductile chromium and in determining which factors contribute to its brittleness.

"Dust abatement by water sprays involves the subprocesses of 1) collision between dust particles and water droplets, 2) adhesion of particles to droplets, and 3) engulfment of particles by the droplets. A review of the fundamental aspects of these subprocesses shows that collisions between particles and droplets are determined by aerodynamics and the size and surface charge of the particles and of the droplets. However, the adhesion and engulfment subprocesses depend upon the wetting characteristics of the particles. Although wetting agents (also known as surfactants) have been used as dust suppressants in several investigations, conflicting results are available regarding their effectiveness. In this paper, we show that these results can be explained if the effects of coal rank on surfactant adsorption and wetting characteristics are taken into account.The influence of several nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy adducts on the wetting behavior of coal is presented. The wetting was determined by a modified Walker Test method, and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wettability of coal depends upon coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant, and the number of ethoxy groups in the molecule.IntroductionDue to the inherent nature of the mining process, a large number of particles are generated, a portion of which becomes airborne to create dust. Dust can be aesthetically and environmentally unacceptable and it can also be explosive. Fine particles in the respirable size range ( < 5 urn) are con-sidered to cause lung diseases, namely, silicosis, pneumoconiosis, etc.(1) Several approaches to reduce dust in mine environments are practiced throughout the mining industry. These include decrease in generation of dust through improvements in mine machinery, ventilation (in which lower dust levels are achieved by dilution of contaminated air with clean air), and dust removal methods. Water sprays are most commonly used to remove dust par-ticles. Recently, scrubbers are reported to have been installed on mining machines to remove dust,(2,3) which also make use of water sprays to reduce dust."

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure, but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of Intolerability which accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a non-odorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter&apos;s presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

"IntroductionThis preliminary report deals with the effect of oxygen pressure on the ignition temperature and combustibility of oils, it is the third of a series which will present the results of an investigation being made by the Bureau of Mines, on oxygen-oil explosions. The purpose of this research is to obtain technical data that will serve as a basis for safety precautions general outline of the problem has been given in the first report (Serial 2507).The present experiments have resulted in (1) a method for determining spontaneous ignition points of oils in an atmospheric of oxygen under pressure; and (2) the determination of these ignition temperatures for three typical oils, one being an animal oil (sperm), one a vegetable oil (linseed), and one a mineral oil (""Moiloil A"").These experiments on explosibility of oil were performed in order to discover the general nature of the phenomenon, especially the order of magnitude of the temperature necessary for spontaneous explosion (120°C. and upwards) and the effect of pressure variation (negligible as regards ignition temperature but important in relation to the violence of the explosion). A continuation oftests should provide a basis for selecting the safest lubricants for high pressure compression of gases particularly air and oxygen; and should be of value when devising new specifications for lubricants, both in the government departments and the compressed-gas manufacturing industry."

This survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of the methane emission and control problem in U.S. bituminous coal mines. The resultant data indicate that the emission rate for any given coalbed depends primarily on the coal production rate and on mine depth, as well as on the nature of the coalbed and the surrounding strata. An excellent correlation was found between (1) the methane emission rate and (2) the product of coal production rate and mine depth for the mines in the Pittsburgh, Pocahontas Nos. 3 and 4, and the Illinois Nos. 5 and 6 coalbeds. The highest total emission rates found in U.S. bituminous coal mines were as follows, in million cubic feet per day: Monongalia County, W. Va., 39; Marion County, W. Va., 30.4; McDowell County, W. Va., 13.1; Washington County, Pa., 11.9; Greene County, Pa., 11.4; Buchanan County, Va., 21.6; Jefferson County, Ala., 10.3; and Franklin County, Ill., 6.6.

Much has been written and many discussions have been held concerning the prevention of accidents in coal mines , and considerable progress has been made in eliminating hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen . Although much progress has been made in the reduction of injury rates in the Pennsylvania anthracite field , the injury rates for the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are generally higher than the average for coal mines in the United States as a whole , because the mining conditions , including the safety problems , in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields are more complex than in other coal fields of the United States . Several factors contribute to this extremely difficult problem , among which are : Multiple - vein mining , steeply pitching measures , folds or faults , hard smooth floors underneath the veins , and the remining or reclaiming of pillars in severely crushed , broken ground . In the early days of the Pennsylvania anthracite industry , only the more productive veins were mined , and this resulted in bypassing those veins that were relatively thin and those containing considerable proportions of impurities . However , the development of modern coal - preparation equipment , improved marketing conditions , and the adoption of mechanical equipment , such as the various types of conveyors and scraper loaders , have made possible the recovery of the thinner and poorer veins . Furthermore , in the early days , little or no attempt was made to recover the coal pillars , usually owing to the great amount of virgin coal available . Consequently , much of the anthracite produced within the last few years has been recovered by second and third mining and frequently by fourth mining - in areas where operations had been suspended for many years . In such areas , the coal veins and intervening strata are usually crushed as the result of gradual subsidence , which intensifies the hazards incidental to roof control , haulage , ventilation , and mine gases . Moreover , the use of coal - cutting equipment is not practicable in most anthracite mines because of. the inclination of the veins and because , in crushed -ground areas , the faces must be advanced slowly and for short distances at a time to permit the erection of timber sets and the placing of forepoles to support the roof and sides . Thus , the slow process of mining brought about by these conditions has resulted in the production of only 0.424 ton of anthracite for each man- hour worked , as compared with 0.753 ton? for each man - hour worked at other coal mines in the United States . A summary contained in Bulletin 462,8/ a publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines , reveals that the rate of fatal injuries in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry was improved from 13.47 deaths per million tons produced in 1870 to 3.88 deaths per million tons mined in 1942. During the period March 16 , 1942 to January 1 , 1947 , the fatality rate was reduced from 3.88 to 2.87 deaths for each million tons mined . On the million man-hour basis , the rate of fatal injuries was reduced from 1.643 to 1.130 and the nonfatalinjury rate was lowered from 119.01 to 83.12 during the same period . The improvements made in both the fatal- and nonfatal - injury rates have required the cooperation of the workmen , the mining companies , and the State and Federal inspection departments . Many individual mines and companies have achieved commendable safety records which contributed greatly to the over - all average for the industry , particularly during the 1942-47 period . One of the most outstanding of these is the Continental mine of the Continental -Archbald Coal Co. , a member of the Moffat Co. Interests .

In the separation of a component from a mixture , two fractions are obtained , one containing a high - percentage composition of the component and the other a low - percentage composition . The high - percentage fraction is frequently called the concentrate and the low - percentage fraction the tailing . In many separation processes the recovery is not complete , and the composition of the concentrate decreases as the recovery of the component, which is concentrated , increases . It is this particular class of separations to which this paper is confined .

For many years mining men have sought for a portable device that would be direct reading and permit more positive detection of methane than was possible with flame safety lamps, which depended so largely on the training, skill, and personal ability of the user. Through the years, after the discovery that methane contributed to many mine explosions, considerable effort and large sums of money have been expended in searching for and developing instruments that would be practical, and, at the same time, reliable and safe to use. Very early in the history of the Bureau of Mines, some of its engineers were unsuccessful, after many trials, in attempts to develop such an instrument. Commercial firms, however, persisted in research until today a number of instruments are on the market that have proved to be practical in coal-mine service. It is hoped, however, that further research will bring about improvements in accuracy and other desirable features. BUREAU OF MINES STANDARD FOR METHANE DETECTORS The Bureau of Mines recognized the need for establishing minimum requirements on which to base official approval of suitable Instruments. This standard was prepared as Schedule 8. It was revised before being issued in printed form. The revision was published as Schedule 8A in 1920 and was revised on two other occasions. The present edition, known as Schedule BC, was issued October 31, 1935.
