"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years the bureau of Mines has been engaged in the detection, recording and interpretation of earth- and air-transmitted disturbances, man-made and natural, related to mining operations. For the measure¬ment of such disturbances, special equipment was developed (1, 2, 3, 4, 8) 3/ and results of the measurements have been reported (5, 6; 7,9).In general, the ranges of amplitude end frequency of vibration encountered and recorded in the earth-transmitted disturbances were 0.00005 to 0.1 inch and 5 to 5,000 cycles per second; in the air-transmitted disturbances, pressures ranging from 0.001 to 100 pounds per square inch and 0 to 20,000 cycles per second were recorded.One characteristic of the earlier tests was that either the arrival time of the disturbance to be recorded was predictable or the recording speed was slow enough so that the record covered extended periods of time (for example, 4 hours). As the investigations continued, it became apparent that a recording device was required that would respond to transient vibrations arriving at indeterminate times and at the same time provide a permanent record of displacement or acceleration versus time on a scale that would permit the analysis of waves having frequency components up to 10,000 cycles per second. A film or paper speed of 720 inches per second was found to be adequate, as this provides approximately 3/4 inch of record for each 0.001 second."

"INTRODUCTION During the development work on sponge iron by the Bureau of lines it was desired to produce a product of maximum density for the furnace. One means of doing this would be to make a plastic mixture of the ground ore and extrude as pellets or large slugs or brick shapes.If a pelletizing Process is employed, the pellets must be strong enough to resist breaking when rolled and tumbled in going through the rotary kiln. If a brick-making process is employed, the brick must be strong enough to withstand handling and considerable pressure when stacked in the kilns.The study had two objectives: first, to find a binder of sufficient strength throughout the early stages of curing and heat treating and, second, to determine the degree of curing and heat treatment necessary to prevent disintegration under normal working conditions.Although the investigation had as its primary objective the processing of sponge iron, the data should interest other industries in which non plastic or poor-bonding slimes are a problem."

[Microscopic methods have proved to be valuable assets in the study of low-grade ores. While the chemical assay u a ally discloses tine total content of valuable metals in such an ore, a thorough knowledge of the nature of the ore should form the from which to prepare an efficient means of recovery. In the treatment of low-grade ores, inefficient recovery, as indicated bay the amount of valuable mineral permitted to go to waste in the tailings, is too frequently the rule rather than the exception, As methods of recovery become more efficient, many low-grade 10 mineral A posits suddenly assume o commercial significance, In much of this material the minerals are so finely disseminated and intermixed that identification even by microscopic methods is a difficult matter. The application of microchemical qualitative analysis with the aid of new device described in this paper, will solve many of the problems of identification encountered in the study of low-grade potential ores. In these ores, especially, the limitations of ordinary microscopic methods are liable to become very great. The microchemical tests obtained by applying a standard set of reagents to a polished knoting whether or not a tarnishing action develops, have considerable value but arc far from being infallible. It is well-known that electrolytic effects are apt to affect seriously the diagnostic value of the tests, end this effect is encountered much more frequently in dealing with finely desseminated minerals. resort to microchemical qualitative analysis, therefore, becomes indispensable.]

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. "The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many. It is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the PortlandMonson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In theMonson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry) a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The author acknowledges the assistance of C. F. Jackson, mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper and the compilation of the data.

On March 6, 1924, the Bureau of Mines approved the ""M.S.A. self-rescuer’ manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., after the M.S.A- self-rescuer bad passed all the tests and requirements of the Bureau's Schedule 14A4.The purpose of the self-rescuer is to help miners to escape from mines in which fires are burning or explosions have occurred, by providing protection from carbon monoxide for at least one half-hour. The self-rescuer can be used similarly by workers above ground who may through accident become surrounded or entrapped by atmospheres containing carbon monoxide.no hazards threaten the miner, who escapes serious injury by fire or violence in a large mine fire namely, ( 1) asphyxiation by poisonous carbon monoxide gas; and (2) suffocation by insufficient oxygen to support life. In order to save himself, the miner must either erect a barrica4e5 against afterdamp and wait restoration of ventilation and rescue or take a long chance at getting out of the mine through entries not permeated by afterdamp.. The self-rescuer removes the hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning for one half-hour or more, and accordingly greatly increases the miner's chance of saving his life.This paper describes the construction and details of the M.S.A. self-rescuer as approved by the Bureau of Mines, and discusses its performance under test condition"

As a part of the program of the Rare and. Precious Metals Experiment Station, Reno, Nev., in connection with investigations of treatment methods for precious and precious-base metal ores, to further conservation and recovery of precious and base metals, tests Were made on samples from the Buzzard Mine, located in the vicinity of Placerville, Calif. These samples represented ore exposed during previous development work, in tunnels and a shaft on the property, including highly oxidized material from the surface zone and sulfide ores from depths of 150 to 300 feet. The surface samples contained little base metal and only enough gold 80 that economic exploitation of them would depend on development of a large tonnage of ore, low-cost mining methods, and satisfactory treatment methods. The sulfide samples were valuable enough to warrant further exploration and development and, if present in suitable tonnage, the installation of a treatment plant for recovery of both precious and base metals. The oxidized surface-zone samples carried 0.11 to 0.14 ounce gold per ton. Standard amalgamation and flotation tests of these samples gave low recoveries. Standard cyanidation tests indicated high consumption of lime and cyanide and gold extraction of 79.4 and 82.7 percent. Water-leaching the ore after crushing to minus 10-mesh improved cyanidation considerably. Ex-tractions of 82.7 to 85.8 percent were obtainec1 with lime consumption of 6 to 7 pounds per ton of ore and cyanide consumptions of 1 to 4 pounds. Grinding the samples to minus 200-mesh followed by water-leaching and cyanidation gave improved extractions of 91-92 percent of the gold, but with slightly increased consumptions of lime and cyanide.

Large quantities of explosives are consumed in the underground mining of ores in the Lake Superior district. Because of the recognized danger of accidentally releasing the potential highly destructive forces contained, the safes possible procedure in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives is necessary. Underground magazines recently constructed in the district give evidence of the earnest desire of the mine operators to incorporate all possible safe-guards in the storage of explosives, including a careful choice of location and arrangement in the plan of the magazine.

"INTRODUCTION The Yancey-Crawford tract, located 1-1/2 nines east of Yancey station on the Norfolk & Western Railway in Rockingham County, Va. was from 1917 to 1941 considered an unusually promising manganese prospect. Because of the favorable geologic formations and because of the common occurrence of manganese in the district and Virginia's large production of these minerals from this area, geological report 3/ have listed this tract as the No. 1 prospect in the State. During World War I, extensive geologic studies were made to locate manganese deposits similar to those exploited at the Crimera mine near Waynesboro to alleviate this mineral shortage during the existing emergency.In September 1941 the Bureau of Mines started exploratory drilling on the tract in an effort to discover and block out reserves of manganese minerals as authorized by the 76th Congress under the Strategic Materials Act. After five drill holes wore sunk, the project was terminated October 1941."

"INTRODUCTION The predominant characteristic of powdered mica is the thin -plate shape of the particulars, and the thinner the plates, the more enhanced is this characteristic. Consequently, it is frequently desirable to grade mica according to the thickness of the plates. Concerning the various possible methods for grading mica, very little has been published. There is also no information on the relative quantities of mica per given range of plate thickness. This paper presents a graphical method that shows how these quantities are distributed and how the different methods of grading compare.CUMULATIVE BULK DENSITYBulk density, which is an indirect measure of the plate thickness, was determined in a small cylindrical cup of 3.37 cubic centimeters volume. The mica was placed in the cup under a standard procedure. The densities thus measured checked these determined in a 273 cubic centi¬meter cup with less than a 2 percent error.In calculating cumulative densities it is important to know how they are averaged. In any grading operation the bulk density of a series of fractions is determined. Starting with the lowest density fraction, the cumulative percent under-density can be calculated through the various fractions. It is possible that quantity may be measured by volume or weight and that the averaging may be done by a number of methods. However, experimentally it has been shown that the quantity must be by volume and that the averaging must be arithmetic. This is illustrated in table 1, in which the calculated and actual bulk densities are listed."

The annual survey of the oven-coke industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, described in this report shows that 79 plants were operating in 22 States December 31, 1956. On that date 15,923 serviceable ovens existed, with a maximum total annual coke capacity of 79,965,100 net tons, and 631 new ovens were under construction. Their annual coke capacity was 3,307,300 net tons. The number of serviceable ovens in existence relates only to those capable of producing coke and does not include (1) any ovens that were blanked off or retired permanently in batteries that were operating December 31, 1956, and (2) ovens that had been demolished and were being rebuilt on that date. For this reason, the number of ovens at furnace plants reported by the Bureau of Mines at the end of each calendar year differs from the number reported for the same group by the American Iron & Steel Institute, as the institute includes ovens being rebuilt.

In 1986, at the request Of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the central portion, encompassing 20,727 acres of the 32,261-acre Badlands Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-021) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Crook and Deschutes Counties, OR, about 12 miles east from Bend. No mineral resources were identified. The area studied is underlain by Tertiary and Quaternary basalt flows which are largely covered by a veneer of sand and silt. No mines, prospects, or mineralized areas occur within or near the study area, but some sand and gravel has been removed from alluvial deposits at the east and west sides of the area. Slab lava of marketable grade and quantity was not found in the study area. None of the study area is of current interest for geothermal resources, but the eastern third of the wilderness study area is leased (1984) for oil and gas.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes a practical approach to sampling that does not require elaborate statistical techniques. Simple steps are given for finding a cutoff point in the response from a repetitive survey. This procedure can be used to estimate the aggregate value of the characteristic being measured without waiting for a complete count from the survey. This is a useful technique when the reference periods are repeated at frequent intervals, such as monthly and quarterly, and when the statistical collecting agency is engaged in publishing timely data which must be accurate economic indicators.

"INTRODUCTION As a byproduct of its mineral investigation program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a number of operating devices and techniques worthy of note. This paper, prepared under the direct supervision of Paul T. Alisman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon ore such technique.The Wright borehole-surveying instrument developed at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., has been described in several publications. 3/ For the benefit of those to whom the publications are not available, the instrument is described here. However, this article will be concerned mainly with the technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for using the instrument.In the use of the Wright borehole-surveying instrument, it was found advantageous to develop a standard practice of operation covering type of film, preparation and care of film, loading film in instrument, placing instrument in container, exposure time, unloading film from instrument, development of film, and determination of dip and strike from film impressions."

"At the annual meeting of the International Association of Fire Engineers at Kansas City, Mo., in June, 1919, the Bureau of Mines offered to cooperate with municipal fire departments for the purpose of obtaining information regarding composition of the air in burning buildings. (Katz, S. H., Statement made at Convention of International Assoc. of Fire Engineers: Fire and Water Eng., vol. 66, July 16, 1919, pp. 129-30, also Fireman's Herald, vol. 78, July 12, 1919, pp. 48.) The gas-mask laboratory of the Bureau's experiment station at Pittsburgh sent vacuum bottles for taking samples to fire chiefs in twenty-five cities, who had signified their intention to aid in this work. It was hoped to obtain one hundred or more samples, because statistics in quantity are necessary for drawing reliable conclusions concern-in the likelihoods of encountering irrespirable as in burning buildings. This far, eleven samples have been received by the laboratory. Results of analyses and pertinent data regarding these samples are given in the accompanyingEight of the eleven samples contained, no carbon monoxide; seven of the eight were taken above the ground level and one below ground. One sample taken above ground contained 0.03 per cent carbon monoxide, and this quantity is not dangerous to breathe for a limited time. Of the three samples taken below ground, one contained no carbon monoxide; the other two contained 0.10 and, 0.35 per cent, respectively. This indicates that in a burning building, the hazard from carbon monoxide is much greater below the ground level. The cause undoubtedly lies in the poorer ventilation that is usually found in cellars or basements. Abundance of ventilation provides the necessary air for complete combustion, or if incomplete combustion does occur, the carbon monoxide generated by the fire is greatly diluted with fresh air and swept away by the current. It may be noted that the highest proportion of carbon monoxide was found in a cellar where a fire as burning among piled cases. The difficult access of air to the burning parts facilitated the formation and lib ration of carbon monoxide. The smoke here was very light and no difficulty was experienced in breathing. Some of the air containing dense smoke showed little change from normal air by analysis. Thus the density of smoke or the irritation and difficulty it causes in breathing are no indication of the presence of poisonous gas. None of the samples shows important oxygen."

Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. This report is designed to assist producers in understanding the complexities of marketing muscovite sheet mica. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special acknowledgment is due S. A. Graphite is chemically identical with diamond, both being crystallized allotropic forms of carbon. Graphite obviously differs greatly from diamond in physical properties and is easily recognized by its blackness, its softness (1 to 2 on Mohs' scale), and its slick feel when rubbed between the fingers. Strictly speaking, all graphite is crystalline, but grades in which the individual grains cannot be distinguished with the naked eye are commercially classed as amorphous. Natural mixtures of the two varieties occur in all proportions, and the classification of a given sample as "amorphous" or "crystalline" graphite is based largely upon trade practice. Until recently different varieties of vegetable or animal charcoal, lamp black, soot, gas carbon, and coal ware considered strictly amorphous, but modern examination by X-ray methods indicates that even these materials possess the same internal crystalline structure as graphite, differences in physical properties being perhaps explained by porosity or presence of combined hydrogen or other impurities.

A process for the manufacture of high-Btu gas from coal has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of fluid-bed gasification of the coal, followed by the gas treatment steps of gas purification and methanation. Advantages of the system are that caking coals can be used directly, and more than half of the ultimate methane is made in the gasifier.
