Not long after electrically driven equipment was introduced into coal mines it became apparent that the spark-producing parts, such as controllers and motors, required safeguards to prevent the ignition of mine gas that might come into their vicinity. Many of the early designs attempted to provide protective enclosures having ventila¬tion and relief for pressures if ignition should occur within. The principal feature of the Davy safety lamp, namely, the wire gauze, was employed widely for this purpose. Other devices were developed to reduce the temperature of products of combustion escaping through the protected openings to a value below that which would cause ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres. Although many such devices performed their intended function satisfactorily under laboratory conditions they were not so satisfac¬tory when subjected to the rigorous conditions encountered under¬ground. Corrosion, mishandling, and accumulations of grease and dirt reduced or destroyed their protective qualities after a period of service in the mines. In the United States this has led to abandon¬ment of special devices in favor of what is called " total enclosure " which means that no regular provision is made for ventilation and release of pressure but rather that the housings or enclosures are built strong enough to withstand the explosion pressures without rupture. As a further protection the joints usually are made of broad, closely fitting surfaces. It is impractical to make such joints absolutely gastight in ordinary machine practice when provision must be made for partial or complete disassembly to facilitate ad¬justments and repairs. Therefore, when an explosion occurs within such enclosures flames may escape through the joints. If the latter are broad enough and not separated too widely, however, the flames will be cooled by contact with the metal surfaces (flanges) of the joints, by rapid expansion, or by both cooling and expansion, with the result that an explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure will not be ignited. During 1953-55, 31,105 miles of pipe for transporting crude petroleum and refined products was laid in the United States, a total slightly below that of the prior 3-year period, according to data compiled by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The added mileage consisted of 22,571 miles of new pipe, representing about 2,163,807 tons of steel, plus 8,534 miles of secondhand pipe, equivalent to about 419,849 additional tons of steel. During the 3-year period, 13,069 miles of pipe was taken up. By January 1, 1956, the Nation had 188,540 miles of pipeline, an 11-percent gain over the 1952 total of 170,504 miles. The greater use of larger diameter pipelines indicated in recent surveys has continued, as the mileage for sizes 12 inches and over increased from 13 percent of the total mileage at the close of 1952 to 16 percent 3 years later. Crude-oil trunklines 12 inches and over in diameter gained 24 percent during 1953-55, and these larger lines represented 30 percent of the total mileage compared with 25 percent at the close of 1952. Furthermore, the mileage for crude-oil lines less than 12 inches in diameter declined 2 percent and made up only 70 percent of the 1955 total against 75 percent n the previous survey. Product Lines 8 inches and over increased 43 percent from 1952 through 1955 and composed 70 percent of the total mileage compared with 66 percent in 1952.

Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane, WA, have collaborated with three Western longwall coal mines in an on going effort to develop technologies that will aid in providing safe and stable working areas. The goal of the research described here is to develop a stress monitoring system that will provide immediate information to mine managers for making daily safety decisions as areas of poor ground are mined through. Initial work has focused on answering preliminary questions regarding the reliability and use of stress change patterns. Research is concentrated on monitoring horizontal stress because horizontal stress is transmitted over long distances through stiff strata, thus allowing an extended length of entry to be monitored. This paper presents an explanation of the concept, key results from field tests at two mine sites, and a proposed process for implementing a monitoring system. System design layouts, instrument use, data collection and interpretation methods, and processes to present findings to mine staff are described. Additional validation and correlation with actual failure mechanisms are required before this approach can be recommended at ongoing operations. However, initial results indicate that this approach shows promise in mines prone to bumps and roof falls associated with large stress changes. In particular, analyses of measured changes in horizontal stresses appear useful.

The Bureau of Mines investigated severe coal mine roof support problems along a section of main entries in the Pittsburgh coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania to identify the causative factors. The mine roof was examined in detail, and various sedimentary structures are described that contributed directly to irregular and unstable roof. Small-scale paleochannels, scours, and related slickensides were identified as the leading cause of bad roof, and isopach maps were prepared to illustrate a method whereby the presence of these structures could be inferred in advance of mining. Probably second in importance was the occurrence of relatively incompetent flaggy, poorly cemented sandstone, weakened by coal and micaceous laminea. No effect of in situ stresses on roof stability was detected.

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

"General.The term mica is probably derived from the Latin ""micare"", meaning to shine or glitter, for the brilliant reflection from mica flakes in rocks has directed more than ordinary attention to this group of minerals. Mica includes a group of several minerals all characterized by a perfect basal cleavage, by virtue of which they may be split into exceedingly thin plates. The minerals are of very common occurrence in all countries, constituting about 4 per cent of the igneous rocks of the world The term ""isinglass"" is sometimes applied to glazing mica, but this is incorrect, for true isinglass is a soluble combustible material made from the air bladders of certain fish. As a constituent of granites and schists, mica is present as flakes too small for commercial use. Mica occurs also as small scales in many sandstones. When granites decompose, the quartz and the white mica are the most resistant to weathering, and so remain when the other constituents have been decomposed and carried away. A secondary white mica known as sericite is formed by the metamorphosis of clay-bearing rocks, and thus, in extremely fine-grained form it constitutes an important constituent of slates and related rocks. Some schists contain a high percentage of mica, but the presence of large amounts of quartz and other minerals has up to the present time rendered them useless as commercial sources of mica for grinding. It is possible, however, that certain mica or seri-cite schists which are composed almost wholly of mica with very little quartz may be utilized for ground mica if found in large enough entity. Considerable micais sometimes found mixed with the residual kaolin that results from decomposition of pegmatites, and in one locality at least it has been recovered as a by-product in a clay purification plant."

The respirable dust standard in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is designed to prevent disability and death from coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Beginning June 30, 1970, the operators of coal mines were required to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the active workings at or below 3.0 milligrams of dust per cubic meter of air. The standard is reduced to 2.0 milligrams per cubic meter after Dec. 30, 1972. This paper presents the equipment and procedures used by the coal mine operators in implementing the respirable dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare and shows the effect of the law, during the first year, on the reduction of dust levels in selected mines. The system employed by the Bureau of Mines for analyzing and processing the dust samples is also presented.

A computerized moving average technique was developed to interpolate coal seam characteristics between sample points. The interpolative method coupled with multivariate regression analysis and simulation procedures was used to forecast coal properties not readily obtained from an analysis of drill core samples. Coal property forecasts were of two kinds: (1) specific mine property forecasts that are suitable for mine product control and yield a good approximation of the local variation along both the vertical and horizontal axes of the seam, and (2) regional estimates where much of the local seam variation is smoothed out, but the general trends are maintained. Forecasts of the volatile matter, ash, total sulfur, and the heating value for part of the Pittsburgh seam located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were in good agreement with independent evaluation data. Spatial configuration for preparation characteristics, particularly, the effect of crushing on sulfur release, low-and high-temperature carbonization properties, the Hardgrove grindability index, the coal hardness index, gasification variables, and hydrogenation factors were constructed for the same area of the Pittsburgh seam. These forecasts may be developed from drill core data collected in the exploration phase of mining. The results, which may take the form of a series of maps, are useful to mining, chemical, and combustion engineers, to economists and mine managers, as well as to coal users for mine design, economic analyses, energy forecasts, utilization studies, mine product control, and environmental control and programming.

If you missed this year?s Texas State Holmes Safety Association meeting, you missed a great one. On January 23 & 24, 2009, we held the meeting that was rescheduled when Hurricane Ike threatened Corpus Christi in September 2008. Sixty-five persons from across the state attended the meeting held at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. The weather was 82 degrees, and the sky was clear and perfect for a safety meeting. Evaluations submitted by the attendees gave the presentations, the networking, and even the food top marks. There were eight councils represented; Big Country, Central Texas, Costal Bend, Heart of Texas, Hill Country, North Texas and North Central. Presentations included Workplace Examinations, Emergency Preparedness, Screen Safety, Contractor Responsibilities, Powered Haulage, Supervising for Safety, and Basic Inspections of Slings and Rigging. Mr. Edward Lopez, SC MSHA District Manager, gave the State of the District Address.

DOMEST1C production of carbon black in 1963, remained at about the same level as in 1962. Carbon black produced by the furnace process increased 2 percent to 1,880 million pounds in 1963 and accounted for 91 percent of the total output. Channel black production continued to decline and was 14 percent less than a year ago. Shipments during 1963 totaled 2,098 million pounds, a 1 percent increase for the year. An increase of 88 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decrease of 72 million pounds in carbon black exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1963 was $148 million. The average value per pound was 7.18 cents or 0.12 cent per pound more than in 1962.

Reference mass spectra and analytical correlations for 20 alkylcycloalkyl sulfides and two dicycloalkyl sulfides are presented 'to provide information that will facilitate the identification of sulfur compounds occurring in natural or synthetic mixtures. Reference spectra indicate relative intensities in addition to parent and base peak sensitivities. Analytical correlations establish the ionic species that reflect major fragmentation paths for the com-pounds studied. Specifically, the correlations show that base peaks are formed by several different processes: (1) Cleavage of the bond a to the ring, (2) fragmentation of the alkyl chain, and (3) fragmentation of the ring plus fragment contribution from the alkyl chain. Useful correlations for deter-mining alkyl chain length involve the CnH2+3S+ and CnH2n+1 + ions. CnH2n-2+ and CnH2n-1 S+ ions reveal the number of carbon atoms in the cyclic ring. Other important ionic species are also discussed.

Footnote references are given to the publications so that further details on the work may be obtained. Bureau of Mines research on the mining, preparation, and utilization of coal is directed toward developing and encouraging safer and more efficient mining practices and preparing and utilizing coals to the best advantage.

Unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in 69% of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground U.S. stone mines from 1990 to 1996. Field investigations at 45 underground stone mines suggest that excessive beam sag or deflection is the principal unstable roof behavior characteristics associated with miner injuries. Laminated roof structures, common in most underground stone mines, allow the immediate roof to separate into distinct beams. The timely determination of roof beam deflection could provide stone miners with advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous roof. Existing methods to assess roof conditions consist of observational and monitoring techniques. Observational techniques include open drillholes, sounding, wedging, and borescopes. Monitoring techniques include scratch tools, extensometers, telltales, Miners Helpers, and Guardian Angels'. Miners have difficulty utilizing these techniques because roof beams are located an average of 8 m (26.5 ft) above the miner's head in environments that are dark, dusty and noisy and these deflections are measured in millimeters of movement. To help mitigate the potential for falls of ground injuries to underground stone miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) to aid in monitoring dangerous levels of roof beam deflection. If enough site-specific information is collected and placed on highly visible maps, individual mining operations could establish general guidelines for responding to specific roof beam deflection occurrences. This would help in implementing a pro-active, comprehensive roof control plan for reducing falls of ground injuries.

To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

The Wood mine area was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in -1941 by a magnetic survey and a gravitational survey. Surface trenches were excavated, and diamond-drill holes were bored at the strongest anomalies developed in common by the two surveys. In the last century', several widely separated bodies of chromite with some magnetite had been exploited in a 'serpentine belt near its contact with schist. At one time this district held a virtual monopoly on the production of chromite. Known ore bodies now are exhausted. Owing to the relatively high specific gravity of chromate compared to normal rocks, a gravitational survey was run to determine which magnetic anomalies were worthy of diamond drilling. Linear feet of trenching totaled 1,710 feet. Ten holes were diamond drilled, which totaled 2,272 feet. The log of the drilling is shown in the text in a tabulation of drill-hole data.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. This report presents the results of a washability study of 455 raw coal channel samples with special emphasis on sulfur reduction. These raw coals contained on the average 14.0 percent ash, 1.91 percent pyritic sulfur, and 3.02 percent total sulfur. The complete washability data are presented for each sample processed. A statistical evaluation is included for the coalbeds from which more than 10 samples were collected and for the geographical coal producing regions. A graphical summation is presented for the coal producing regions and selected coalbeds. Finally a similar statistical evaluation is included showing composited data interpolated at Btu recovery levels of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 percent. Graphical summations are presented for the various coal producing regions. Generally, significant sulfur reduction is achieved if the coals are crushed to a finer size and the higher specific gravity increments are removed. If a 50-percent Btu recovery was acceptable, then 32 percent of the samples tested could be upgraded to meet the current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard of 1.2 pounds of S02 emission per million (MM) Btu when crushed to 14-mesh top size and separated gravimetrically.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the mining industry, has identified and demonstrated the effectiveness of several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include the following: identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face to maximize usage of the primary airflow, identifying optimum face airflow rates for maximizing dilution effects, and coursing the primary face intake from tailgate to headgate to minimize outby airflow contamination. Application of these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.
