An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex3 X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from six preparation plants in the Appalachian region and one preparation plant in the mid-western region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coal products suitable for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by ash determination using the Cendrex for all products tested.

A triaxial procedure is described for measuring the modulus of elasticity and Possion's ratio of stress relief cores , that is , the concentric hole cores obtained by the overcoring technique . The elastic constant determinations can be made at stress levels comparable with those encountered in underground mining . The results from tests on an aluminum alloy calibration specimen and four rock specimens are included .

Studies were made to determine the amenability of yttrium to fused-salt electrorefining in a controlled atmosphere. Tests were conducted in a LiCl- YCl3 electrolyte system at 710° C. The major variables studied were the YCl3 content of the electrolyte, from l.7 to 13.4 mol percent, and the initial cathode current density, from 410 to 1,630 amperes per square foot. Vacuum distillation was employed to remove salt from the deposited metal. Metallic impurities, except for lithium, could be reduced to near or below their lower analytical limits, ranging from 10 ppm for Cu to 300 ppm for Ta; reduction of oxygen content, however, was accomplished only in metal produced from electrolytes with 5.4 mol percent YCl3 or less. Initial cathode current density had little effect on the purity of the product.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a dewatering technique for treating wastewater that was tested on waste slurry from a commercial tile company in Alabama. Raw wastewater samples were pretreated with 10 Ib calcium chloride and 10 lb Wyoming bentonite per 1,000 gal of slurry. After pretreatment, polyethylene oxide (PEO) at dosages varying from 0.05 to 0.20 lb per 1,000 gal was mixed with the waste slurry, forming strong, tough floes that were separated from the clarified water using a trammel. The flocculated slurry was dewatered to a consistency that could be handled for subsequent disposal in a landfill. The clarified water quality was equivalent to that of the company's present treatment system.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash- softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the hardgrove grind- ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruc- tions issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the con- tractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal. The Government purchased approximately 5-1/4 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1953. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 11,435 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any one State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications con- tain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The present publication covers many States but deals only with the analytical data of the coals. "The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

The liquid-level gage described in this report is an instrument designed to locate liquid levels in wells rapidly and accurately and, with auxiliary equipment described, to follow moving liquid levels automatically. The depth at which the instrument makes contact with the liquid in a well is indicated at the surface by a depth meter on the cable to which the instrument is attached. When the gage is used to follow a surging moving level, the liquid depth is indicated continuously at the surface. This report contains a description and illustrations of the gage and outlines the operating procedures. The instrument is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length and may be operated through 2-inch tubing. The gage consists essentially of a float that moves upward with respect to the rest of the assembly, causing a change in the flow of electric current from the surface when the liquid level is reached. The instrument has been tested under a variety of conditions and has been found to be sensitive to changes in liquid level of 1/2 inch. Its accuracy is limited principally by the accuracy of the wire-line depth indicator used. It is not affected by pressure or temperature, and it can be run in open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. It employs only one electric circuit and can be run on an Amergraph single-conductor cable (type 1-H-0) ,

"Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant (Shankar and Ramani, 1991 ). Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, the following three-part study was undertaken:• a study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities;• a study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both air flow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and• the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon.In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine are presented. Comparing the results from the two studies,it was observed that increasing the air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment ( Shankar and Ramani, I 994a) and the rate of re-entrainment decreased with the time of exposure of the source dust to the flowing air. In addition, when the source dust was composed of particles of different sizes, the airborne dust concentrations due to re-entrainment were higher than when the source dust was composed of particles of the same size. The contribution of airborne dust concentration due to air flow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking. IntroductionIn underground coal mines, dust is produced primarily during the process of mining and during such activities as pillar spall, loading, belt transfer and roof fall. The generated dust is entrained and then collects on surfaces through dispersion, diffusion and eventual deposition. Removal forces, such as flowing ventilation air or turbulence caused by walking and moving vehicles, can re-entrain the deposited dust (Hall, 1955). A portion of the re-entrained dust remains airborne and increases the concentration of airborne dust in mine airways.The presence of airborne coal dust in mine airways in large concentrations can be hazardous. Health effects include coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis, and it can be a nuisance affecting visibility. In addition, as is common during methane explosions, if the concentration of airborne coal dust becomes significant, there could be a coal-dust explosion (Singer, Cook and Grumer, 1972; Singer, Harris and Grumer, 1974; Edwards and Ford, 1988). Through concerned research efforts over the last decade, significantprogress has been made in reducing the airborne dust concentration in mine atmospheres. However, secondary sources, such as re-entrainment, have not been studied in-depth. It is important to understand the phenomenon of re-entrainment and its potential contribution to the airborne dust concentration in mine airways for further decreasing airborne dust hazards in mines."

Of the 15 selected non fuel mineral commodities detailed in table 12, only 3 indicated increases in worldwide consumption in 1992. As in 1991, decline in consumption levels of the selected commodities can be attributed to reduced levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Of the remaining 12 commodities, 2 magnesium and cadmium, stayed relatively the same, while the other 10, including iron and steel, all recorded decreases. Global consumption of iron ore is estimated to have fallen about 3.5 % or about 30 million tons. This is a greater decline than what was estimated for production of iron ore, which is down only 2.7% or nearly 26.5 million tons, suggesting an addition to stocks. The consumption trend for iron and steel has been declining since 1989. This has mainly been due to the continued drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Even as the European economy begins to turn upward, there may only be a slight increase in consumption of iron, steel, and cement, considering the high cost of construction needed to modernize factories and buildings in Eastern Europe. Many feel that the economies of these countries are limited by the current status of their industries.

This report describes the results of a reconnaissance survey of areas in California and Nevada considered favorable to beryllium mineralization. Pegmatite dikes, veins, intrusive sills, contact metamorphic, and disseminated deposits as well as tactite deposits in the former major tungsten-producing districts were investigated. A general geographic pattern of beryllium mineralization was found to be concentrated along a wide belt in eastern Nevada extending from the Ruby Mountains, Elko County, south through the Fish Creek Range, Eureka County, the Snake Range, White Pine County to the Virgin Mountains in Clark County, Nev., and Mohave County, Ariz. Sporadic occurrences of beryllium are in central and southern Nevada, and in the pegmatite dikes of San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties, Calif., and the granite masses of the southern Inyo Mountains, Inyo County, Calif. Principal company activities are centered in the Snake Range, Fish Creek Range, and the Virgin Mountains, Nev., and the Inyo Mountains, Calif. Other areas in California and Nevada have been superficially explored with results indicating either limited or widespread, but submarginal, mineralization. Although beryllium was found to occur, to some extent, in many of the deposits, mining has been hindered by the lack of a market for beryllium ores and concentrates other than standard-grade beryl and also by the erratic pattern of mineralization and the high exploration and beneficiation costs required to produce a marketable product.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research to determine the effects of a barium-based fuel additive on diesel particulate emissions. The test engine was typical of types used to power underground coal min-ing equipment. Test parameters consisted of baseline measurements without additive, three fuel additive concentrations, and five steady-state engine loads, all at 1,200 r/min. Additive effects on soot mass concen-tration, opacity, particle size distribution, volatile fraction, and NOx emissions were determined. Important findings are as follows: Using the manufacturer's recom-mended additive concentration increased the gravimetrically measured mass of particulate by 30 to 80 pct at four of the five steady-state load conditions. Soot measurements by optical methods did not agree with those by gravimetric techniques, for additive-treated fuels. The additive reduced volatile hydrocarbons adsorbed on filter deposits by up to 50 pet. At most engine loads, carbon particulate was also reduced. About 40 pet of the barium added to the fuel was accounted for in the exhaust. The health implications for miners were considered, but no firm conclusions were drawn or recommendations made because the results are for steady-state conditions, which may not be representative of real-world operation of diesel-powered equipment underground.

The Big mine has been a source of mica and high-grade felspar from separate zones in the same pegmatite dike since 1914. In 1943 it became the outstanding producer of strategic mica in New England. The urgent need for sheet mica led to core-drilling by the Bureau of Mines from February to May 1914. Nine diamond-drill hob's aggregating 1,474 feet in length were drilled by the Bureau of Mines with the objective of developing extensions of the known mica shoots. The use of large-diameter bits made it feasible to obtain reasonably reliable results in diamond-drilling this type of deposit.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a long-term groundwater monitoring and site characterization program at an abandoned 10-ha, acid-producing, copper-gold tailings impoundment in north-central Washington State. The purpose was to investigate contaminant release and transport, and attenuation mechanisms in the tailings, sediments below the tailings, and gravels downgradient of the impoundment. This report summarizes the monitoring results and physical properties of the tailings, the sediments below the tailings, and the groundwater system associated with the tailings. Water samples from the vadose and saturated zones of the impoundment were analyzed for 15 constituents. Concentrations of the same constituents were determined in water samples up to 3 m beneath the impoundment and in the shallow colluvium and deep bedrock at 76, 335, and 550 m downgradient and 168 m upgradient. Constituent concentrations within the tailings are quite variable and are influenced by pH, depth of oxidation, grain-size differential (surface area), hydraulic gradient, groundwater mixing, and the presence of hardpan layers, carbonaceous material, and organic matter. Most of the metal constituents decreased to background or near-background concentrations in the farthest downgradient well.

The Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) specifically for use by mine management and safety personnel. DOSES simplifies the record-keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, making it easier to identify and solve noise problems. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker?s daily activities. At the same time, noise measurements are collected with a dosimeter or sound level meter (SLM). Observations about the worker?s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with times and durations so they can later be matched up with the noise data. After the completion of a time-motion study of the worker?s daily tasks and locations (possible noise sources), which measures the worker?s noise exposures during the recorded events, the information is entered into DOSES. The program then displays information about the worker?s accumulated noise dose over time.

The STATE MINERAL SUMMARIES publication provides estimated data and summaries of mineral activities at the State level for 1993. Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. Individual State summaries are published separately as State Mineral Industry Surveys and copies can be obtained from the appropriate State mineral officer. In an effort to facilitate the rapid dissemination of information and publications produced by the U.S. Bureau of Mine, an electronic document dissemination system is now available for use. Because of environmental concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated an anhydrous chlorination process for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite, Pelletized concentrate was reacted continuously with chlorine in a vertical shaft reactor at 550° to 750° C to extract copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur. The resulting molten metal chlorides drained from the reactor and collected in a receiver while sulfur distilled from the top and condensed in a separate unit. The tests were conducted in a 10-cm-diam reactor constructed of glass and in l5-cm-diam reactors constructed from various refractory materials. A high-alumina ramming mix exhibited the best resistance to molten metal chlorides and elemental sulfur in chlorine atmospheres. A reactor made with this high-alumina refractory was operated for 55 hr under actual chlorinating conditions without suffering any deterioration. Tests results show that more than 96 pct of the chalcopyrite was converted to copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur. Good separation of the metal chloride and sulfur products was achieved. After filtration, elemental sulfur of greater than 99 pct purity was obtained.
