Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps.

The Bureau of Mines has examined the operation of an oxygen sensor manufactured by the City University, London, England. The sensor produces a current proportional to the oxygen concentration by reacting oxygen at a nonconsumable cathode. The sensor design is unique in that the primary mode of oxygen transport to the cathode is by diffusion through a capillary, The sensor using this design has a stability of 0- to 0.02-pct reading change per day over a 4.7-month test, small temperature coefficient of 0.29-pct reading change per °C, and small pressure coefficient of 0.34-pct reading change per 1,000-ft altitude change, If this sensor were incorporated into an oxygen detector or monitor, this would be a distinct improvement in electrochemical-type oxygen analyzers and would be useful to the mining industry.

Oxygen and nitrogen cause strain aging in electrorefined vanadium, as evidenced by maxima in yield and tensile strengths and by Snoek internal friction peaks. Alloys containing up to 0.22 percent oxygen and 0.11 percent nitrogen were investigated. Tensile strengths of oxygen-and nitrogen-containing alloys were 66,000 and 68,000 psi at 300° to 400° C, compared with 53,000 and 62,000 psi, respectively, at room temperature. Total elongation decreases to about 7 percent at the temperature of maximum strength. At 600° C, strain aging is not evident. Based on interstitial contents calculated from internal friction measurement, the increases in strength caused by nitrogen and oxygen were 440,000 psi per weight-percent nitrogen and 260,000 psi per weight-percent oxygen. Application of the Schoeck and Seeger treatment to the Snoek effect in these systems results in a calculated lattice distortion of 0.24 and 0.15 caused by the presence of an interstitial nitrogen or oxygen atom, respectively. Alloys containing boron or carbon were also investigated. Both elements refine the grain size but have no other effect because of their low solubility in vanadium.

The safe use of a refrigerant or any substance depends on knowledge of its pertinent properties and conditions of use; therefore some of the properties of refrigerants that are related to life, fire, and explosion hazards are discussed herein. These data serve as a basis for suggested control measures in the use· of refrigerants. The properties of refrigerants may be broadly classified into three main groups: (1) Those important for refrigeration, (2) those significant from the standpoint of confining the refrigerant, and (3) those that become important if the refrigerant escapes from the :machine or container. The first group of properties, such as latent heat of vaporization, specific heat of vapor, specific heat of liquid, etc., is not considered to be directly related to safety and is not discussed here. The second group, those properties important in confining the refrigerants, has particular significance because· it relates to "built-in" safety. This group is emphasized because it is believed the soundest procedure in designing equipment is to give due consideration .to both the health and safety hazards likely to be associated with the equipment. Furthermore, the toxicity, fire, and explosion hazards are controlled as long as the refrigerant is confined. Some properties of this group are (1) stability, (2) corrosiveness, (3) boiling point, (4) pressure developed in the system, (5) warning odor or irritation, and (6) ease of detection. The third group includes such properties as toxicity (of compound and decomposition products), irritating action, and explosibility.

The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

The Salt River range vanadium deposits are situated 3 to 6 miles east and southeast of Afton, Lincoln County, Wyo. The vanadium occurs in a continuous bedded shale zone of the Phosphoria formation extending from the vicinity of Afton into southeastern Idaho. The Bureau of Mines explored several of these vanadiferous-shale deposits between December 1942 and December 1943 and conducted metallurgical tests on the ores. The areas investigated were west Swift Creek, the Dry Creek, and the Cottonwood Creek. The vanadiferous-shale beds have been folded sharply into a series of tightly compressed, eroded anticlines and synclines, which form the Salt River range. The vanadium occurs in a series of narrow shale or mudstone beds contained within the phosphatic-shale member of the Phosphoria formation. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines consisted of surface trenching and underground work over 18 miles of outcrop of vanadiferous shale with an average assay value of 0.866 percent V2O5.

For nearly a score of years the American petroleum industry has faced the problem of maintaining its economic structure while oil -producing potentialities greatly exceeded the increasing market demand for oil and its products . However , the combination of maximum civilian demand with rising defense requirements caused an all - time peak in crudeoil production in the latter half of 1941 , with a daily production (as estimated by the Bureau of Mines ) of 4,139,000 barrels in December - an increase of 16 percent over the daily production of 3,573,000 barrels in December 1940. In the event of a long war , a continuing , steady, and adequate supply of petroleum and its products for military and required civilian needs is essential, and the efficiency of recovery of oil from natural underground reservoirs will have to be maximum. Whereas it may not be possible to increase production in some fields , the output from others may have to be drawn at a much faster rate than formerly . More than 10 years ' experience in operating oil fields under proration control has demonstrated to petroleum engineers that some of the efficiency of recovery of oil from reservoir sands and rocks is sacrificed if the oil and gas are withdrawn at too . rapid a rate . As petroleum is an irreplaceable natural resource for which suitable substitutes probably will not be available in desired quantities for many years , any producing method that jeopardizes the quantity of oil that may be recovered from underground reservoirs must be considered at this time of declared war against aggressor nations as conflicting with the best interests of national defense . At best, the efficient recovery of oil is a complex problem . It involves not only a knowledge and application of the fundamentals of fluid flow through porous mediums, but the sources of energy responsible for the movement of oil and gas through reservoir sands and porous rocks to wells must be known to determine the best practices for extracting these hydrocarbons . Reservoir energy is of two kinds - (1 ) water under hydrostatic head underlying the oil in the extraneous parts of the reservoir system and ( 2 ) natural gas under pressure as "free " gas in the reservoir or in solution in the oil . Inasmuch as the efficiency of oil recovery depends largely on the manner in which reservoir energy is used to move oil through reservoir sands and porous rocks to wells , optimum practices for withdrawing the oil cannot be determined until it has been established that the oil in the reservoirs is being forced to wells by an internal gas expansion, by a natural water drive , or by a combination of gas expansion and water drive . There is a fundamental difference in the performance characteristics of gas - expansion and water - drive reservoirs . In a strictly gas - expansion reservoir the energy available to move oil and gas through the porous formations to wells results solely from gas pressure , which is maximum when the reservoir is tapped by the first well . Pressures decline as oil and gas are withdrawn ; consequently, the energy available for moving oil and gas through the oil - bearing formations to wells decreases with production . Curtailing the oil - production rate or shutting in gas - expansion reservoirs entirely will not act to replenish energy previously used in the production of oil and gas ; in their operation , therefore , it is especially important not to waste reservoir energy - the production of oil with high gas : oil ratios will be reflected in lower ultimate recoveries of oil .

During early development of the blast furnace, Connellsville coke made entirely from Pittsburgh-bed coal proved to be an excellent fuel. The need for blending coking coals arose as the industry grew and it became necessary to carbonize coals having voking properties inferior to those of Pittsburgh coal Most coals carbonized today in continental Europe and this country are blonded: This practise has improved the quality of coke and permitted the utilization of coals that would yield inferior coke, if carbonized sepa- rately, The depletion of the world's better coking coals, which has been noted by leading coal technologists,2/4/wes accelerated during the recent war and. It is important, therefore, that reserves be evaluated and conserved. In the principal, steel-producing sections of this country, Pocahontas coals have been blended so extensively that the terms "low-volatile coking coal": and. "Pocahontas" have become virtually synonymous. Other low-volatile coals. have been used to manufacture metallurgical coke and will be used more extensively as, the supply of the better known and more accessible Pocahontas coals decreases. Recognizing the need for augmenting the supply of high-rank coking coals, the Bureau of Mines has included both low- and medium-volatile coals in its Survey of the Carbonizing Properties of American Coals, which was started with the cooperation of the American Gas Association in 1929. Twenty coals, 12 of low-volatile and 8 of medium-volatile rank, have been blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh-bed coal, and five standard low- volatile coals have been blended with various high-volatile coals. The Cherry Creek tungsten district was explored by the Bureau of Mines from April 16 to August 13, 1942. This district is in north-central White Pine County, Nev., 50 miles north of Ely. Principal work was done on the property of the Cherry Creek Tungsten Mining Co. and at the adjacent Chance mine, although the entire district was examined and mapped. The exploratory work was done in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised surveying, trenching, sampling, long-hole and core drilling, rehabilitation of mine workings, road building, drifting, and shaft sinking. The more important tungsten occurrences were explored by trenching and diamond drilling. Sixteen holes, having a total length of 2,515 feet, were drilled. The project resulted in partial development of three new tungsten deposits and small increases in the reserve tonnage of two scheelite-bearing lenses that were being mined by the company. The following pages summarize the history of the district, outline the ownership of the properties explored, and describe the physical features and mineral deposits. Mining and milling practices at the Cherry Creek tungsten mine are outlined, and the plan and results of project work are presented in detail together with surface maps, assay maps, and drill-hole logs.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to separate the F from byproduct Zn concentrates obtained from fluorspar (CaF2) production, as part of the Bureau's effort to devise efficient, environmentally acceptable technology for recovering Zn from resources considered undesirable by Zn producers. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was found to be effective in F removal, while ammonium carbonate [(NH4)2C031 was not. The most important variables for reducing the necessary residence time were found to be temperature and agitation. Optimum leaching conditions were 75° C and 500 r/min for 2 h at 40 pct solids with 0.2 g acid per gram of concentrate, which resulted in a 98.3-pct F extraction. Zinc losses during F removal were in the range of 2 to 3.3 pct. Other elements such as Fe, Cd, Ca, and Cu were also partially dissolved. About 93 pct of the F was removed from the leach solution by neutralization and precipitation with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. Additional treatment might be necessary to limit the buildup of soluble elements in the recycled leach solution.

Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.

Several limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines in 1946. This report presents data obtained from the investigation of limestone deposits in the vicinity of Arlington, Snohomish County, Wash. The work consisted of surface surveys and sampling. Samples were taken where complete, or nearly complete, sections of limestone were exposed or where individual beds were exposed at a number of separate .localities. Areas were cleaned by blasting prior to sampling. Channel samples were cut where practical; otherwise chip samples taken. Twenty-one samples were taken. The locations of the samples and the analyses are shown on maps accompanying this report.

The investigation reported in this paper is one of several included in a broad program of developing new or improved concentration processes for the oxidized and partly oxidized deposits of lead and zinc, A sample from the Playter lease, Newton County, Mo., containing pyromorphite was successfully concentrated by fatty acid flotation to a grade of over 62 percent lead. Owing to the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead at that grade was limited to 44 percent. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF PROPERTY The mineral pyromorphite is a chlorophosphate of lead containing 76.4 percent lead, and, although it occurs frequently in association with other lead minerals, it is considered a minor ore mineral of lead. The manner of occurrence of oxidized lead minerals, including pyromorphite, which frequently are no larger in grain size than the clay with which they are found, militates both against development of a simple beneficiation process and high recovery. The profitable exploitation of such deposits depends not only on a successful treatment procedure but a highly favorable metal market as well. For these, and perhaps other reasons, very little research has been done on the recovery of pyromorphite from its deposits.

Data are presented comparing results obtained with 17 different catalysts in hydrogenating crude shale oil to gasoline in single-pass operation. A method is described for predicting the maximum yield of gasoline obtainable at constant pressure for each catalyst from results of a limited number of experiments at different temperatures. Operating variables have considerable influence on yields and properties of products. With most of the catalysts, at operating temperatures below 890° F. liquid yield exceeded 100 volume-percent. Above this temperature the volume of liquid product decreased rapidly. Maximum gasoline production in most instances was achieved at a temperature higher than that at which the maximum volume of liquid product was produced.

As part of a program to investigate technology for the extraction of studied HNO3 alumina from abundant domestic ores , the Bureau of Mines leaching of calcined Georgia kaolinitic clay . In this investigation , iron impurities were removed from the aluminum nitrate pregnant leach liquor by solvent extraction , and the purified liquor was evaporated to prepare a suitably concentrated crystallizer feed liquor . Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate was crystallized from the liquor to separate the aluminum from undesirable trace elements and excess water . Continuous crystallization at 40 ° C in a pilot plant vacuum evaporative unit was performed for 5 days to observe the effects of impurity buildup under minimum bleed- stream conditions . Liquor feed rate was 26 lb/h and AAll (( NNOO33 )) 33..99HH22O0 ((AANNNN)) crystal production rate was 17 lb/h . Fe 203 and Cr203 were not effectively separated from the crystals , and P205 , MgO , and K20 impurities must be removed by recrystallization . Other impurities did not excessively contaminate the crystals . Washing the crystals with water or aqueous HNO3 gave an equivalent increase in crystal purity levels by displacing mother liquor . Theoretical equations , applicable to any continuous evaporative crystallization of developed to produce material balances for engineering ANN , were applications .

The Bureau of Mines developed techniques for induction melting of titanium in a split, water-cooled copper crucible. Calcium fluoride, which was used as an inert slag cover during melting, formed an insulating layer of solid slag between the ingot and the crucible wall. This thin layer of slag effectively insulated the ingot from the crucible and prevented the molten metal from shorting across the slits between adjacent segments of the crucible. The technique provides a means of melting loose titanium sponge and scrap and eliminates the need for fabricating a consumable electrode. This report describes the equipment developed and compares ingots produced from two varieties of titanium sponge, from titanium scrap, and from previously melted titanium with ingots prepared by vacuum-arc melting and electroslag melting. A melting scheme was also proposed and evaluated whereby loose titanium sponge was consolidated into a first-melt ingot for vacuum-arc remelting.

"INTRODUCTION The San Antonio Canyon prospect was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943 and again in October 1944. In July 1944, the United States Geological Survey mapped the prospect and submitted a report 4/ recommending core drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The drilling project, which was supervised by the author, was started on January 10 and completed on May 10, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrametallurgical method to recover aluminum, aluminum oxide, and fluxing salts from aluminum salt slags. The slag is leached with water at room temperature to produce a saturated brine slurry. Screening of the slurry yields an aluminum-rich fraction that can be returned to the dross furnace. The remaining slurry is vacuum filtered, yielding a clear brine solution and an aluminum oxide filter cake. Evaporation of the clear filtrate produces a high-purity fluxing salt for reuse in the dross furnace. Over 80 pct of the metallic aluminum is recovered in the aluminum-rich oversize fraction, while essentially all the fluxing salts are recovered by evaporation. This report contains the final results of an investigation on a process research unit scale, an economic evaluation of the method, and recommendations to further improve the process.

Three coals from the Wilkes on - Carbonado district of Pierce County , Washington , were subjected to washability analyses to estimate the amount and quality of washed coal obtainable . Because the coals were unusually difficult to clean , the washability examinations were supplemented by table tests , tests in dense - medium cleaning units , and flotation tests . None of the coals could be reduced to the desired 10 percent ash by tabling and the response to flotation by two of them was poor . Dense -medium treatment provided coal of the desired quality , but with the most difficult coal the recovery efficiency was lower than usual .
