In December 1975, a report entitled "An Evaluation of the Accuracy of the Coal Mine Dust Sampling Program Administered by the Department of Interior" [1] was prepared by the Analytical Chemistry Division of the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), in response to a request by Senator Harrison A. Williams. Chairman, Committee on Labor and Public Welfare. The report attempted to evaluate the adequacy of (1) the personal sampler unit used to measure the coal dust concentration in the mines, (2) the procedures used by the Department of Interior (DOI) to analyze the dust samples obtained from mine operators, and (3) any recent studies made by the Department or private industry concerning the coal dust sampling equipment. Recommendations in the report of NBS included continued research efforts by the appropriate organization to correct the personal sampler deficiencies and to consider the use of area or stationary samplers as a supplement to the personal samplers. Concurrent with the NBS report cited above, the General Accounting Office (GAO) also issued a report in December, 1975 [2], suggesting that improvements are still needed in coal mine dust sampling programs and procedures relating to penalty assessments and collections. Applications of three experimental design techniques to smelting operations are explained. The report describes a factorial design using three variables at two levels, a fractional factorial design which investigates seven variables, and response-surface methodology for optimization of electric- furnace smelting processes. These methods may be applied with a minimum of trials and at little expense. Further, the writer knows of no reasons why the same methods could not be applied to other operations as well, such as steelmaking.

The deed of an Indian allottee whose mind was unsound, but who was not entirely without understanding, is voidable if made before the grantor's incapacity has been judicially determined; and a purchaser of the original grantee who interposes the defense of a bona fide purchaser has the burden of showing a purchase for value and on failure to do so can not claim the benefit of a bona fide purchaser. The purchaser of a mine equipped with an electric hoist, placed in the mine under a rental contract with the owner of the hoist and under an agreement to return it to the owner at the expiration of the term of hiring, can not claim and hold the hoist as against the owner where the agent of the seller explained to the purchaser that the hoist was not owned by the owner of the claim. A deed conveying lands subject to an oil and gas lease under which the lessee had the right to drill or pay money in lieu of drilling at his option, and reserving to the grantor a share of the royalties under such lease, and expressly authorizing the grantee to lease the land for oil and gas purposes and to take the rentals, authorizes the grantee to extend the existing lease before the expiration thereof in consideration of the annual payment of money in lieu of drilling, as contemplated by the lease.

THIS INFORMATION CIRCULAR covers the calendar year 1055 and contains statistical data on employment and injuries pertinent to metal and nonmetal mining and to their mills and processing plants that are voluntarily reported annually to the Federal Bureau of Mmes. This report, unlike previous publications, lists not only production and development workers but also office employees associated with mining and milling or processing. The last publication m the series, Information Circular 7798, Injury Experience in the Metal and Nonmetal Industries, 1954, also contains unpublished injury and employment statistics for 1943 through 1953. The Bureau is authorized to request data on injuries and employment from operators in the metal- and nonmetal-mining industries. The information voluntarily submitted by these operators contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the mineral mining industries as it discloses the hazards to which metal and nonmetal workers are continually exposed during mineral extractive operations.

During World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated a large number of ore deposits in the United States and Alaska in a search for domestic sources of strategic minerals. Deposits chosen for exploration included those expected to contain metals of importance in the successful prosecution of the war. This report describes exploration of a district of known antimony occurrence on Coyote or Antimony Creek near Antimony, Garfield County, Utah. A preliminary report by Paul T. Allsman, Chief of the Bureau's Salt Lake City branch made in August 1941, recommended further investigation, and proposed methods for performing the work. The project, begun in November 1941 and completed in January 1942, included trenching and sampling in four of the most promising parts of the area The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the work by detailed mapping and assisted in the interpretation of geologic data.

Probably one of the most significant departures in tunneling practice is the introduction of Diesel locomotives far haulage (Diesel trucks have been used for some time). The fallacy of the belief that they do not generate carbon monoxide or toxic gases and can be used indiscriminately has been proved by the authors through observation for several years of atmospheric conditions surrounding the use of Diesel engines in tunnels. Diesel locomotives haves been introduced in tunnel haulage for reasons other than safety or health. Except to the extent that they replace trolleys, with their danger of causing electrocutions, modern Diesel locomotives do not increase safety Or remove any ordinary hazards to safety or health. In fact, they create such hazards, the extent of which is limited entirely by the carbon monoxide-content level set, method of ventilation, adequacy of the measures.

Some new equipment for drilling vertical holes, cleaning blast holes, hauling explosives, and conditioning Diesel exhaust gas has been developed. at the Bureau's Experimental Oil-Shale mine near Rifle, Colo, The equipment has application, not only in oil-shale mining, but in many of the country's underground mines in which room-and-pillar methods of mining are employed. This report presents the Bureau's experience in testing the following equipment in the Experimental Oil-Shale mine: 1. A four-drill benching jumbo for drilling 23-foot vertical blast holes 2. A jet borehole blower for efficient cleaning of deep, vertical blast holes. 3. An explosives truck equipped with two compartments to provide safe conveyance for dynamite and detonators. 4. A mobile, electric substation to provide switching equipment, low-voltage and overload protection, and transformer facilities to remote locations in the mine. 5. A chemical conditioner for scrubbing the exhaust gases from Diesel-powered equipment used in underground operations. 6. Other units of equipment which have been tested at the Experimental mine.

This circular presents a summary of the domestic chromium industry, and discusses the salient features of the world situation , reflecting the literature of the subject . The United States Bureau of Mines has in its files additional detailed information on many subjects briefly discussed in this paper and desires to assist the industries and the public by giving further data in response to individual inquiries . It will welcome comment and criticism and any contributions that would assist in making future editions of this circular more accurate . Unlike most common metals , chromium is rarely marketed as a pure metal . The chromium industry deals mainly with chromite , the principal ore of chromium , and with ferrochromium , the basic alloy in which chromium enters the metallurgical industry.

"Introduction.Investigations of the oil shales of the State of Colorado were begun February 1, 1920, by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Colorado, under cooperative agreement entered into by the Bureau and the State, funds for which were provided by the State. The investigations are for the purpose of determining by large-scale Laboratory retorting tests, those conditions which will produce optimum yield of best quality products from Colorado shales. (For an outline of the work and description of the apparatus, see Gavin, Martin J., and Sharp, Leslie H., ""investigations of the Fundamentals of Oil-shale Retorting,"" Reports of Investigations, Bureau of Mines, July, 1920.)In the preliminary work which is usually required when a new material is being dealt with, certain physical and chemical constants of the shales being investigated, and their products, were determined; these data will be of much value not only to the thorough retorting tests now under way at Boulder, but to engineers who will design and construct oil-shale plants. While the figures presented in this report apply only to the shale used in the determinations, strictly speaking, the shale used was selected to represent, as well as possible, an average of the massive type of oil shale encountered in Colorado. The figures, therefore, can probably be applied with little danger of serious error to any massive Colorado oil shale which yields in the neighborhood of a barrel (42 gallons) of oil to the ton.This paper is based on a more complete article now being prepared in which experimental methods are explained in full, and complete experimental data. For the purpose of presenting the data with as delay as possible, it has been decided to anticipate the more complete article with the present report."

"INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Mining Division, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual investigative work, and prepares the final report.The Metallurgical Division, O. C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The investigation was under the general supervision of J. B. This report presents the results of washability examinations of seven coals from the principal coal-producing fields of Montana. A complete performance test of the Baum-type jig operated at one of the mines is included, as are the results of cleaning tests made on two of the coals in a dense-medium pilot plant. The coals examined from the Red Lodge, Bull Mountain, and Forsyth fields are comparatively easy to clean. Ash contents of 5 to 10 percent can be obtained at yields of washed coal ranging from 90 to 95 percent. The coal from the Great Falls field, however, could not be cleaned readily to less than 14 percent ash, and the rejection of impurity would amount to over 25 percent. The two coals treated in the dense-medium pilot plant were characterized by sharp separation of impurity, high recovery efficiency, and satisfactory reduction in ash content.

The mineral olivine, though known to mineralogists for many years, was of little commercial value in the United States before 1933. It was first described in 1790 by Johann Gottlieb Werner, who named it "olivine in allusion to its olive-green color. Commercial olivine first attracted attention because of its refractory properties. Further research has developed methods of extracting the magnesia content for the production of various magnesium compounds. Experimental and pilot-plant work also are in progress to make olivine available as a low-cost raw material for the production of magnesium metal.

The mine of the Eureka Standard Consolidated dining Co. is at Dividend, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. It is operated under the same management and controlled by the Antic Standard Mining Co.; the two properties adjoin each other. The Eureka Standard is worked through a vertical shaft; the ore is mined by a stringer-set-and-fill method. One hundred and thirty men were employed in April 1933. The normal daily tonnage is 100 tons; the ore is shipped to the smelter at Garfield, Utah.

The petrographic microscope plays an important role in the mineral dressing of nonmetallic materials. Petrographers and mineral technologists have evinced an interest in the technique developed, specifically, for mineral-dressing problems. In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the Meadow Valley Range Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-156) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark and Lincoln Counties, NV, about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, NV. The Johnston and Fitchett prospect, in the northern part of the study area, has more than 3 million tons of marginal perlite reserves suitable for many commercial uses. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests perlite could be profitably mined from the study area; however, it is unlikely these perlite deposits will be developed in the foreseeable future because of unfavorable market conditions. Zeolite minerals occur in alteration zones adjacent to perlite deposits at the Johnston and Fitchett prospect, but high quality material is closer to potential markets. A metalliferous black shale unit containing 800,000 tons of subeconomic resources may extend into the study area at the Bradshaw vanadium prospect on the northwest boundary. Limestone, stone, sand, and gravel occurrences are wide-spread, but other suitable deposits in the region are more accessible to potential markets. Seven prospects in and near the study area were examined. The entire study area is leased for oil and gas exploration. A group of perlite placer claims covering more than 480 acres was located in the 1940's in the northern part of the study area. A small group of lode claims was located in the mid 1950's in the southwest part of the study area. No mining claims are currently (1985) held inside the study area. No mineral production is known from within the study area.

Behavioral accidents are a particular type of accident. They are caused by inappropriate individual behaviors and faulty reactions. Catastrophe theory is a means for mathematically modeling the dynamic processes that underlie behavioral accidents. Based on a comprehensive data base of mining accidents, a computerized catastrophe model has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. This model systematically links individual psychological, group behavioral, and mine environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several longstanding questions about why some normally safe behaving persons may spontaneously engage in unsafe acts that have high risks of serious injury. Field tests with the model indicate that it has three important uses: It can be used as an effective training aid for increasing employee safety consciousness; it can be used as a management laboratory for testing decision alternatives and policies; and it can be used to help design the most effective work teams.

Studies are reported on the structure of coal and coke with the graphical , statistical densimetric method based on the relation between the molecular volume per carbon atom ( M / C ) and the atomic hydrogen - carbon ratio ( H / C ) . Previous work , mostly from chemical and physical investigations , is critically reviewed . Difficulties in evaluating the ring increment are demonstrated for coal and coke for the statistical densimetric method based on the additivity of atomic volumes of constituent elements . A new diagram is presented for the graphical method . Methods are introduced for correcting M /C and H/C for the presence of minor constituents in coal and coke . With the graphical method , the fractions of aromatic carbon atoms in the total carbon atoms are estimated for a coal , a resin , and 5 petrographic components ; the types of condensed structure in the fundamental units of molecules are discussed for these substances , 28 coals , and 6 " average " cokes at 500 ° to 1,000 ° C. It is also shown that the number of rings in the fundamental units of coal generally increases with increasing rank and that of coke , with increasing carbonization temperature .

The technical feasibility of gasifying powdered, noncoking, low-rank coal with steam in an externally heated tube has been demonstrated. The tube, 112 ft. of alloy-steel tubing shaped into a helix, served as an electrical conductor of electricity used for heating. The effects of the following variables were studied: Residence time of coal in reactor, average reaction temperature, steam concentration, and rank or geologic age of coal. Reaction pressure was maintained in the range 19-26 p.s.i.a. High carbon conversions and large yields of synthesis gas were obtained with low-rank coal. In one test, for example, about 88 pct. of the carbon in a subbituminous C coal was gasified at 1,910* F. with a residence time of 1 sec. The gas contained 58 pct. H2, 19 COD 15 CO, and 3 CH4; the yield was 30 cu. ft. (at 32' F. and 14.7 p.s.i.) of synthesis gas (CO + H2) per pound of dry coal.

"The control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. The understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of the existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been attempted. In this paper, first a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It incorporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.IntroductionAn airborne dust cloud is a complex system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. The behavior of the particles is dependent on a number of complex physical mechanisms, often opposing in nature. The net interaction results in the ambient concentration. This size dependent behavior of particles contrasts with that of gases, an area quite widely studied.The term aerosol is used to describe clouds of microscopic and submicroscopic particles in air such as chemical smoke or particulate matter released from smoke stacks. An aerosol system can be regarded as an arbitrary element of volume filled with gas and suspended particles of possible highly variable physiochemical nature. The parameters that are used to describe an aerosol system include concentration, mass average velocity and particle mass and radius. In characterizing such systems, several assumptions are made. Among these is the assumption that particles are smooth, inert and rigid spheres. Again, for example, when the particles are in transport, the possibility of collision exists. As a result of the collision, the particles may coalesce to form larger particles. The probability of sticking is considered a known quantity (lady, 1970). In this paper, the application of the principles used in aerosol systems is explored for the study of the transport and deposition of fine coal dust in underground mines."

This paper summarizes a survey of fine-grinding practice in ore-concentrating plants throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba as reported in the Bureau of Mines Information Circulars on milling methods. The survey covers 49 concentrators, which have a combined capacity of over 160,000 tons per day. In these plants 470 ball, rod, and pebble mills prepare material for flotation, gravity concentration, amalgamation, cyanidation, and air separation. The ores are those of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, feldspar, and pyrite. The metallurgy is that of the period 1928-32. Of these 49 concentrators, 36 are in the United States. They can treat 134,400 tons per day, and they have 326 fine-grinding mills. In the United States there are about 100 active or temporarily idle concentrators, exclusive of the many plants in the Tri-State zinc district, the washeries of the Lake Superior iron ranges and the Florida phosphate area, and small gold and silver concentrators. These 100 plants have an estimated capacity of 290,000 tons per day and employ about 650 ball, rod, and pebble mills. Consequently, since this paper covers about half of the production of this country it may be considered as particularly representative of fine grinding in ore mills in the United States.
