The data presented in this paper form the chief part of a general survey of the oil-shale resources of Indiana. Other papers* have already been published which contain data an various aspects of this resource. In combination, these papers present data with reference to the following points; (1) distribution of the New Albany shale; (2) amount of shale available; (3) homogeneity and thickness of the formation; (4) amount and quality of the oil obtained from the shale; (5) nitrogen content of the shale; (6) extractibility of the shale and its amenity to breaking; (7) some economic factors bearing upon the utilization of the shale; and (3) other miscellaneous factors and data. In the future, technical work on other phases of the general problem is expected to be done with the object of making a complete survey of this resource which is of much potential importance to the state and nation.

[Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. It has bin shown in the, case of certain synthetic solutions5/ that large errors may result if the analysis is carried out by simple extraction with alkali and mineral acids.]

This paper is the fourth of a series of preliminary papers on smelting in the lead blast furnace.4 The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation and to correlate these conditions with operating factors, furnace behavior, and metallurgical losses. This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is a compilation of fundamental cyanide chemistry data obtained through review of the scientific literature. It includes information on thermodynamics and chemical equilibria, ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectra, and the chemistry and photochemistry of cyanide, chemical species derived from cyanide, and metal cyanide species. It also includes guidance on the use of the data for solving practical problems in precious metals applications. This publication is intended mainly for use as a reference by personnel in the precious metals industry and regulatory agencies, and other cyanide users, to provide comprehensive information on cyanide chemistry. The document should assist in the formulation of effective policies for cyanide control in the construction, operation, and closure phases of precious metals mining and metallurgical operations. In addition, the data in this publication will be useful in other contexts, such as dealing with industrial cyanide usage, cyanide-containing wastes and associated environmental problems.

Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man&apos;s first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930&apos;s the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious. In addition to agricultural and building lime the sales statistics compiled annually by the Bureau of Mines include lime sold to the steel and other metallurgical industries as refractory and fluxing material, as well as that used by paper mills, glass works, tanneries, and water-treatment plants. These major uses normally consume about 86 percent of the domestic sales. The remaining 14 percent includes lime sold for use in the manufacture of alcohol, alkalies, bleaches, calcium acetate, calcium carbide, coke gas and byproducts, glue, insecticides, oils and fats, paints, and rubber, in the refining of salt, in the manufacture of sand-lime and slag brick, in the disposal of sewage and garbage, in the manufacture of silica brick, in the refining of sugar, in the textile industries, and in wood distillation. Many other uses are also known for which complete sales data are not available.

This report describes an investigation of the technical feasibility of using a conventional commercial-size (10-ft. i.d.), rotating grate, dry-ash-removal type gas producer to make producer gas from chestnut-size bone anthracite. Test instruments were installed, and some minor changes were made in the equipment to handle the large quantities of materials expected. Extensive tests, lasting about 4 weeks, were planned, using 35 to 50 percent ash chestnut anthracite bone. However, operations were suspended after 8 days when it became apparent that to use this type of fuel satisfactorily substantial changes in equipment and operating procedures would be required. Nevertheless, enough data were obtained to indicate that gas could be produced continuously and routinely from bone coal in this type of producer whenever conditions justified the necessary development work.

This volume constitutes the final report for the Rescue Subsystem portion of the Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System program conducted by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation under contract to the United States Bureau of Mines (Contract Number H0101262 dated Jung 17, 1970). The program was directed by the Special Systems Department of the Westinghouse, Baltimore, Maryland facility. The basic objectives of the CMRSS program were to develop and test hardware to determine the efficacy of a variety of coal mine rescue and survival concepts and techniques. These concepts were drawn from two major- sources: the Request for Proposal from the Bureau of Mines and the final report on the Mine Rescue and Survival Study conducted by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

Stockpiles containing 2.3 million tons of lignite constructed in the period 1948-56 in conjunction with the construction of Garrison Dam on the Missouri River demonstrate successful stable long-term storage of lignite. Uniform and thorough compaction of each of the I-foot-thick layers by which the piles were constructed produced a bulk density of 70 Ib/cu ft. Air penetration into the stockpiles was restricted to a degree that prevents spontaneous heating or deterioration of the stored lignite, A continuing record of observations beginning with stockpiling operations in 1948 has been accumulated, This includes periodic fuel analysis, analysis of pile gases, and measurement of pile temperatures on the first large stock-pile, pile 5. This report describes the stockpiling method, the changes in heating value, pile gas composition, and pile temperature and summarizes observations from 1953 to 1964, Data accumulated attest to the stability of the stored lignite. The variation of the average heating value of periodic pile-depth samples is only 160 Btu/lb (11,990 to 11,830) on the moisture" and ash-free (maf) basis during almost 10 years of storage. Temperature levels of the pile interior are progressively decreasing. At pile surface, cyclic variations occur with the season. The only problem encountered with the large stockpiles is wind and water erosion of the pile surface. The partially successful control measures used are described.

The problems caused by interaction in multi-horizon mining are world wide and are not limited to the coal industry. These problems will continue to increase as mining of new seams multiplies and replaces production from mined out horizons. Interaction problems are particularly evident in the Appalachian coal fields which contain many mineable, contiguously placed coal seams. Selection of the mining sequence of these seams, historically and currently, is based primarily on considerations of seam ownership, availability, and economics. Experience has shown, however, that mining any seam can seriously affect subsequent operations in coal seams both above and below the one being mined. This interaction effect is often detrimental to the recovery cost and safety of mining the subsequent seams. Designing to avoid or minimize interaction effects represents a major challenge to the modern coal mining industry and therefore is the focus of this research. In an effort to evaluate past interaction effects and provide guidelines for future mine design, interactive ground control problems were categorized into four areas. These are pillar load transfer, massive interseam shearing, subsidence and pressure arching effects. To facilitate research, each of these areas was studied separately although in reality these subdivisions are arbitrary and have considerable overlap.

Combustibility data are presented for 14 samples representing commonly used mine materials (treated and untreated wood, conveyor belt and brattice cloth). The combustibility data were obtained in the Factory Mutual Small-Scale Combustibility Apparatus (sample area -0.008 m ). The hazards associated with the mine materials were evaluated in terms of: 1) ignition/ surface flame spread using an ignition parameter (IP). A reasonable correlation was found between IP values and U.S. Bureau of Mines ratings for conveyor belts and brattice cloth and large-scale fire test data for treated and untreated timber sets; 2) generation of combustible vapors, using a vapor generation parameter (VP); 3) heat release using a heat generation parameter (HP). A reasonable correlation was found between HP values and the large-scale fire test data for treated and untreated timber sets; 4) generation of "smoke," toxic and corrosive products using a chemical compound generation parameter (CP); and 5) light obscuration by "smoke" using the light obscuration parameter (LP). All the wood treatments, except Fireguard, were found to be effective in reducing the fire hazard. The effectiveness of the treatment appears to be due to enhancement of carbon formation in the solid phase and enhancement of water formation in the vapor phase. Concepts are presented for establishing 1) the relationship between various parameters (IP, VP, HP, CP, and LP) and basic properties of materials, and 2) the usefulness of the parameters as criteria for the combustibility and fire hazard evaluations of the mine materials.

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a single subject. The Bureau of Mines has developed the shearer-clearer--a new type of dust control system for longwall shearers. The system partitions the airflow around the shearer into a clean split and a contaminated split. The dust cloud is confined to the vicinity of the coal face, while the shearer operators remain in the clean split on the gob side of the machine. The shearer-clearer operates on the principle that each water spray moves air like a small fan and can be positioned to direct the dusty air towards the face. The hardware is inexpensive and can be installed in a single shift. It consists of several strategically mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. Laboratory testing indicates reductions 1n shearer operator dust exposure as high as 97 pct. Preliminary results from an underground demonstration in one mine also indicate that considerable dust reductions at the shearer may be obtained. In conjunction with the development of the shearer-clearer, dust surveys were conducted in three other mines to determine if some shearer spray systems currently in use partition the flow in a manner similar to the shearer-clearer, and if so, whether this partially accounts for markedly cleaner conditions on some longwalls. Results from these surveys indicate this to be the case. A feature of the cleaner longwalls was a downwind orientation of their water sprays, which is a key element of the shearer-clearer system. The shearer-clearer system described in this report was designed for an Eickhoff EDW 300 shearer working a 7-foot coal seam. The testing to date has concentrated on cutting directions counter to the primary airflow. The development effort continues for different mining equipment and conditions. It is expected that different systems will be required to accommodate the range of conditions occurring underground. Application of the system presented here to conditions different than those described is not likely to produce the same results.

This study was prepared in response to the need for a series of data that reflect the basic flow pattern of energy resources in the United States. To effectively measure and analyze energy,2 it is necessary to prepare balances that reflect both production and consumption, and the various forms energy resources take at different stages of utilization. Before energy can be measured it must also be put into a common unit. In this study the common unit us d is the British Thermal Unit (Btu). The ideal point to survey energy is at the stage of final ultimate use, representing the useful work derived from the interaction of energy inputs and the prime mover. Unfortunately this concept of efficient or useful work from energy output cannot readily be measured in the aggregate. With the present available official data, energy measurement can be carried to the point of calculation of net inputs of energy3 into the economy at various stages of utilization. However, preparation of energy balances, on a net basis is hampered by the fact that this can only be done for years when the censuses of Mineral Industries and Manufactures are taken, usually at 5-year intervals.

Between 1988 and 1990, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of San Juan National Forest to appraise and determine types and locations of deposits that could be mined economically now and in the foreseeable future. The study included a comprehensive field examination and literature search. Substantial amounts of lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver have been mined from within the Forest in the La Plata, Rico, Silverton, and Dunton areas. At least one buried 200 million ton stockwork molybdenum deposit occurs in the Rico area. Similar size porphyry copper deposits occur at the surface and about 1,700 feet below the surface in the Bedrock Creek area of the La Plata district. Numerous smaller base-and precious-metal and uranium deposits have been prospected and mined throughout the Forest. Coal, oil, and gas have been or are currently being produced in the western and southern parts of the Forest. Carbon dioxide occurs in the western part of the Forest. Strategic elements occurring within the Forest include platinum, palladium, cadmium, gallium, indium, bismuth, and tellurium; however none of these elements is economically recoverable at present. Several geothermal areas are scattered across the eastern two-thirds of the Forest. Industrial minerals within the Forest include sand and gravel, limestone, and decorative stone.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) the Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential hazards of three compressed oxygen self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR&apos;s) designed for use in under-ground coal mines. The evaluation followed the lines used in a similar investigation of chemical self-rescuers and involved laboratory experiments as well as field trials designed to simulate a mining environment. They included bullet impact, bonfire, feeder-breaker impact and feed-through, and mining machine runover tests. The work showed that the units were not inherently unsafe but that under certain conditions of extreme abuse they can present a potential ignition or explosion hazard. This, coupled with a survey of reported damage on SCSR&apos;s currently deployed in underground mines, which indicated a relatively high frequency of incidents leading to the destruc-tion of the units, led to new recommendations on the deployment of SCSR&apos;s. The recommendations formulated by MSHA state that the units should be either properly worn by the miner, stored in heavy containers, or otherwise protected from situations in which they might be accidentally ruptured or destroyed, such as runover by mobile mining equipment.

In 1949 the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, established a Classification Working Party, to develop an international system for classifying coal. This project was necessitated by the increased trade in coal among various nations following World War II. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed to cover the characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Different terms for describing similar or identical coals in each nation caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade. Experts from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, East Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia participated in various stages of the classification work. Walter A. Selvig was appointed by the Bureau of Mines as the technical expert to represent the United States because of his experience in developing and standardizing methods of analyzing and classifying American coals. He served on the Classification Working Party until his retirement from the Bureau of Mines early in 1956. Extensive laboratory work was done in connection with the classification studies at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.

The continuous gasification of lignite in an externally heated alloy-steel re-tort was investigated by the Bureau of Mines, Grand Forks, N. Dak., from 1945 to 1951. The main objective of the long-term experimental program was to obtain data on the mechanical performance of this type of gasification retort, particularly the alloy-steel heat-transfer surface of the retort, when operated on large pilot-plant scale. At the same time, extensive experimental data were obtained concerning the effect of process variables and the effect of a limited number of design modifications on gasifier performance. In the period covered by this progress report 4 pilot-plant runs totaling 2,879 hours of operation were completed with the rolled-plate, 310-alloy reaction tube. Over 30 million cubic feet of gas, having H2-CO ratios from 2.1 to 4.4, was made by the partial gasification of 636 tons of 1-1/2-by 3/8-inch natural lignite. Rates of gas generation were from 8,200 to 14,300 cubic feet per hour. Three of the four runs were carried out with the lowered gas offtake or continuous-annulus design modification of the gasification retort. In the final run of the series, gasification of lignite from seven different mines in North Dakota and Saskatchewan, Canada, was investigated at similar combustion-space temperatures and lignite and steam feed rates.
