The Red Dog Mine is a high-grade zinc-lead mine located in northwest Alaska which began operations in November 1989. In June 2014 the upper half of a charge in a trim shot in the Aqqaluk pit deflagrated. No other holes in the area were observed to react and the remainder of the pattern was shot without incident. This was the only known case of a deflagration in the 25 years of operations. As part of the investigation into the cause of this incident rock samples were obtained from the area of this hole and from other areas in this pit. The samples were assayed and tested for reactivity using the Reactive Ground Catalyzed Adiabatic test. Approximately half of the samples were found to be reactive with standard blasting agents. Unexpectedly, some of these were found to be reactive with blasting agents doped with urea to act as an inhibiter. Relationships between element grades and reactivity and between Specific Heating Capacity and reactivity were developed; however, the small sample size led to these models having an unrealistically large number of geological model blocks tagged as reactive. A program to better understand the behavior by testing more samples was initiated. Drill core was selected based on the predicted level of reactivity using the aforementioned relationships. The samples covered a greater range of grades and lithologies and included rock from the soon to be developed Qanaiyaq pit. The samples were dry pulverized then split for elemental assay, Reactive Ground Catalyzed Adiabatic testing, Specific Heating Capacity (SHC) determination, and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) mineralogical analysis. From this data, a Red Dog Mine specific assay based classification for separating reactive from non-reactive ground was developed. Furthermore, it was possible to divide the reactive ground into two subgroups: i) rock which reacts with ANFO-emulsion blends even when manufactured specifically with a reactivity suppression agent like urea and ii) rock which reacts with ordinary ANFO-emulsion blends only when a reactivity suppression agent like urea is absent.

Washington State has a well developed set of blasting regulations which have been promulgated by the Department of Labor using extensive stakeholder input, not only from citizens but also from manufacturers and representatives of IME, blasters in charge, blasting engineers, blasting companies, local and federal law enforcement agencies, fire officials, and local and state government representatives. WAC 296-52 therefore provides a foundation or platform for developing city ordinances for Washington State cities should a City wish to do so. On the other hand, Oregon’s code is based on OSHA 1926, Subdivision U, Blasting and the Use of Explosives which provides scant direction regarding the modern use of explosives. Reference is also made to ODOT Section 00335 - Blasting Methods and Protection of Excavation Backslopes. This paper examines two separate programs that have been developed by two Cities, one in Washington State and one in Oregon to further regulate blasting inside City limits and discusses why the lack of a regulatory foundation made one approach more difficult than the other. One of the authors was retained by the City of Kennewick, WA to develop their ordinance and has more recently followed and reacted to a pending ordinance for the City of Redmond, Oregon. The paper will compare and contrast the different approaches and comment on the reaction from both Blasters and the public. We also present a case study that involved blasting in an urban area of Oregon to prepare a foundation for a water tank. Controlled Blasting was carried out within 70-ft of residencies and within a community that had expressed reservations regarding blasting even though the work would make a significant contribution to the betterment of the community. Pre-construction surveys of residencies located in a large area surrounding the site were performed and a well-planned blasting program was carried out. Residencies were subject to vibration levels that were monitored using six seismographs that surrounded the site and these units measured vibration levels that were significantly lower than allowed by statute. There were complaints triggered by individuals reactions to blast vibrations which validated commonly held models of human perception but no damage was caused by the Blasting.

A large open pit iron ore mine in Brazil, which has a heterogeneous lithology, faces a challenge in defining drill and blast patterns to achieve the expected results. The mine needed to obtain an automated representation of the fragmentation curves and correlate them to the respective blasts, lithologies and quality parameters, seeking the continuous optimization of the fragmentation process and its benefits to the subsequent comminution processes. Trials were carried out for 5 months to demonstrate the functionality of an autonomous fragmentation monitoring system that analyzes the granulometric curve of the material throughout the muckpile and makes the results available online and in real time. The system, which contains a binocular camera, a processing unit and an antenna, was installed in a shovel, to evaluate the following KPI's: monitoring failures, monitoring capacity, physical availability and reportability of oversized boulders. The system analyzed 33,060 samples, with an average capacity of 285 photos every 24 hours, 127 during the day and 158 at night, all measured, analyzed, stored, and made available on its online platform, reporting 223 alerts of P80 above 400mm (15.7 in) and 38 particle sizes above 900mm (35.4 in). The inactive and operational hours of the monitoring system corresponded, respectively, to the idle and worked hours of the shovel, according to dispatch data. There were no camera or processor failures, and rain, dust or poor internet conditions did not impact sampling and fragmentation analysis, indicating 100% physical availability of the system. The autonomous monitoring analyzed 139 times more samples compared to the currently used manual method. In addition to increasing sampling representativeness and automating the process, it increases the safety, quality, and productivity of granulometric analysis, eliminating the exposure of people in the mine and human bias in the analyses. Additional analyses were performed by correlating digitally centralized drill and blast data, data from autonomous drills and fragmentation results. Automated obtention of granulometric curves favors quick decision-making and optimization of blasts to achieve better results in productivity and cost reduction in the plant and mine operation. The autonomous fragmentation monitoring system met the need presented by the mine, proving to be a key tool in continuous improvement projects, including Mine to Plant.

TIGERWIN, now on CD, is a user-friendly personal computer code (running under Windows) which determines the detonation and expansion state of an explosive from its known chemical composition. TIGERWIN is intended for users in the mining and commercial explosives industry who do not routinely program or run Fortran codes. The code allows the user to open a window on the computer screen and enter the initial density and the weight percentage composition of an explosive, ingredient by ingredient. Alternatively, the code can balance the composition with one or more ingredient percentages fixed, while proportionally adjusting the others automatically to give a total of 100%. The equation of state and its parameters can be user-selected from several proven and tested versions of the BKW, the JCZ, and the ideal gas equations of state. TIGERWIN allows the user to select several options for different additional calculations, such as determining the constant volume explosion, the Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) point, the detonation Hugoniot, the expansion isentrope from the C-J point, and point calculations with selectable specific volume and temperature. Additional options include calculations of detonation data with one or more ingredients partially reacted, assuming either temperature equilibrium between reaction products and unreacted material, or keeping the unreacted material “cold” at the initial temperature. Thus the code can run both ideal and non-ideal detonation calculations. The code automatically saves the input and output files in a separate directory for future reference. The output from several calculations can be displayed and printed in the form of a comparison table. In it, the key results of up to five calculations with different explosive compositions can be compared. The results from an individual calculation can be displayed graphically and printed with expansion work, pressure, or temperature as functions of specific volume. A complete listing of the details of the calculation results, similar to those from the original Fortran Tiger calculations, can also be displayed and printed. No computer experience is required to run the code and workshop participants are encouraged to bring in their own formulations to try out on TIGERWIN

For many years there have been small scale tests available for evaluating the toxic fumes production by capsensitive explosives (DOT Class 1. l), but these could not be used with blasting agents due to the large charge sizes and heavy confinement required for proper detonation. Considering the extensive use of blasting agents in construction and mining, there is a need to determine the quantities of toxic ti,tmes generated by blasting agents. At the International Society of Explosive Engineers Twenty Third Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in 1997, the authors reported on a facility for detonating large (4.54 kg), confined blasting agent charges in a controlled volume that had been constructed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Lab’s Experimental Mine. Since 1997, this facility has been used to collect data on toxic fumes produced by the detonation of various ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) mixtures and several cap-sensitive explosives. ANFO composition ranging from 1 to 10 percent (pet) tieI oil have been studied. As expected from previous studies, with an increase in fuel oil content the carbon monoxide production increases, while nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production decrease. The detonation velocity varies from 3,000 to 4,000 m/set for the 1 to 10 pet range of fuel oil content, suggesting that ANFO mixes with improper fuel oil content may appear to detonate properly, while their fume production differs significantly from optimum. The study also considers such factors as degree of confinement, water contamination, and aluminum content on blasting agent fume production. Results indicate that water contamination of the ANFO has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but causes significant increase in nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Decreasing confinement from Schedule 80 steel pipe to 0.4~mm thick sheet metal also has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but significantly increases nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Adding 5 and 10 pet aluminum to the ANFO had no clear effect on carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, or nitrogen dioxide production.

Concrete is a common construction material used throughout the world, and with increasing demand of fast-track construction, blasting and concrete casting are occurring simultaneously at many sites where rock is being excavated for concrete placement. However, there has been significant disagreement in the construction industry as to what intensity of shock vibrations green, or fresh concrete can tolerate. Peak particle velocities are often arbitrarily chosen, or are simply based on materials such as plaster and drywall that have been more thoroughly studied in relation to damage. Previous research on green concrete has used the concrete’s static strength subjected to shockwaves at different ages as the primary damage criteria. In addition, the static strength tests have been based on curing time. However, changes in temperature or humidity can dramatically alter the hydration rate, which affects strength development of different cements. To account for temperature changes and humidity the concept of concrete maturity is commonly used and allows the researcher to see where the concrete was in terms of hydration progress. In general, static testing determines the failure stress that the concrete’s macrostructure can handle, and often failure occurs in the natural materials first or along large defects in casting techniques. Dynamic testing or high strain rate testing, on the other hand, loads materials at such a high rate that larger defects do not have time to react and instead the microstructure is more highly stressed leading to higher strength and stiffness values. This is known as the material’s strain rate sensitivity. Since dynamic testing better tests the microstructural strength, it is believed that it may provide a better way to assess damage to green concrete. Testing includes both static and dynamic compression as well as static and dynamic splitting tensile strength to assess whether damaged has occurred to the concrete. No significant statistical evidence was discovered that damage to the concrete occurred at five different “green” maturities from peak resultant velocities ranging from 10.66 in/s (271mm/s) to 4.40 in/s (112 mm/s) with average intensity of 6.7 in/s (170mm/s).

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F) and prescribed in-hole residence times on the order of days. When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1ms increments up to 1500ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits. An underground mine in Western USA has several areas in their development heading with very high temperature, in view of this, they decided to use the IGNEO detonators in order to evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the system.

The King George V (KGV) Shaft forms part of MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) Works Contract 703 extension of the underground West Island Line on Hong Kong Island. The Shaft and the associated adit was the sole access to excavate the running tunnels. Originally during the Detailed Design stage, it was concluded that blasting was not feasible at the KGV Shaft due to the close proximity of sensitive receivers in the form of residential buildings, electrical cables and hospitals. As a result, the Contractor planned to excavate the Shaft using mechanical means with a programme time of seven months. The Contractor appointed a Sub-contractor to analyse the feasibility of excavating the Shaft by blasting. The Sub-contractor reviewed the proposal and recommended the use of an innovative blasting technique that had never been previously employed in Hong Kong. The Sub-contractor recommended the Shaft be blasted using DetNet electronic delay detonator technology, manufactured by AEL Mining Services in South Africa, with an initial 1.5m depth of water ballast covering the blast face. The electronic delay detonators provided initiation accuracy to ensure there would be no overlap between sequentially detonating blastholes. The water ballast makes use of the effect of energy lost through the shock front causing the water to break up into droplets creating a spray dome resulting in the attenuation of the energy imparted into the surrounding rock mass. Various tests have demonstrated that both the maximum overpressure and impulse density are significantly reduced when water of a minimum depth is in direct contact with detonating explosives. This innovative blasting technique reduced the excavation programme by three months, saved HK$5 million in direct costs and totally mitigated the impacts on the public and other stakeholders nearby the KGV Shaft. Peak Particle Velocities (vibrations) rarely exceeded 2-3mm/sec (0.08-0.12in/sec) at a distance of 30-40m (98-131ft) from the blast location and air overpressure levels were reduced below the Hong Kong target level of 120dBL. In total, 24 blasts were fired with an average advance of 1.6m (5.25ft) with an average powder factor of 2.03kg/m3 (0.127lb/ft3) to 1.84 kg/m3 (0.114lb/ft3). The initiation pattern had 5ms between sequentially detonating blastholes and 20ms between adjoining rings.

In October 2017, a multi-bench failure occurred in the east wall of the Guelb Moghrein copper and gold mine in Mauritania. The failure extended 100 m (328 ft) vertically and horizontally and resulted in the sterilisation of ore, but no equipment or personnel were put in danger. The remediation plan successfully removed the failed material and the cutback resumed to a modified pit design, leaving ore reserves behind. In 2021 after completion of mining in another part of the pit, a plan was formulated to develop a narrow cutback behind the failed wall and recover the sterilised ore. Infill drilling defined a resource of approximately 2.9 Mtonne (3.2 Mton) of ore at 0.78% Cu and 0.67 g/t Au at a strip ratio of 5.5:1. The high strip ratio meant that it was necessary to mine thirteen benches of waste, or 156 m (512 ft) vertically, over a two-year period before reaching the first ore, with the cutback only being economically viable if all ore could be depleted at the end of the third year. The high economic risk of the project required a holistic approach to mitigate the risk of another wall failure, by addressing the following areas: 1. Pit Design: with help from an external Geotechnical Consultant, the pit design was optimised to include increased factors of safety, reduced stress points, lower overall slope angles and straight lined walls were replaced with curved walls. 2. Geotechnical Management: the site Geotechnical Superintendent worked closely with an external Geotechnical Consultant to better understand the structural geology. Slope monitoring was improved through an expanded network of prisms, regular in field inspections and the use of a slope monitoring radar. 3. Drill and Blast: new drill and blast designs were developed from first principles, consisting of production, wall control and presplit designs. Blast master polygons and bench development sequences were developed with consideration of the structural geology and the influence of the initiation designs. 4. Mine Operations: improving operational discipline was a critical factor that ensured the accurate execution of drill and blast designs and excavation to bench levels and pit limits. This holistic approach has enabled the safe development of the cutback down to the 936 RL (relative level), two benches below the point at which the previous wall failure occurred. Extraction of ore has occurred from the 960 RL, and due to faster than planned excavation rates, the cutback is expected to be completed ahead of schedule.

Explosives used for blasting operations in civil engineering works, like construction of piping systems under roads, of pools, of houses and buildings can generate large volumes of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide can represent between 1 to 3% of the gases produced by usual explosives. The production of 10 to 24 1 of CO by kg of explosives blasted is theoretically anticipated. CO is a gas that has no characteristic colour, smell or taste. It can migrate in the fractured rock of the blasted areas on fair distances, and then infiltrate in closed spaces like sewage systems, manholes, but also in basements of houses. In Quebec, in the last 10 years, 7 people were poisoned by CO in their houses to the point that they had to be treated in hyperbaric chambers. In the USA, many accidents have occurred and one worker died in a manhole. From the review of intoxication cases, the distance of migration of CO may reach 55 m if a conduit is present underground. Underground conduits broken by blast, tilling around underground conduits in road or house trenches, or fractured rock created by blasts between houses or between a house and a road, are the different pathways identified in the Quebec incidents. Field tests were performed at sites close to CO intoxication locations in order to evaluate the behaviour of CO in fractured rock following blasting operations. From these tests, the following conclusions may be drawn. The structural geology of the rock formation (schistosity, family of joints, fractures) plays a role in the direction and extent of gas migration in fractures generated when rock is blasted with explosives. The confinement of the rock can affect the quantity of gas migrating in the fractured rock. Significant concentrations of CO may persist in the fractured rock even 7 days after a blast. Advection is the initial mechanism of CO migration in fractured rock generated by the blasts or naturally occurring before the blast. The distance of migration with this mechanism is short (5 to 8 m). In trenches of muck (equivalent to tills under roads) the distance of CO migration by advection is 12 to 20 m. In the 2 to 3 days following the blasts, further CO migration up to 15 m is made by diffusion in the induced fractures, or up to 30 m in the trenches. To minimise CO production and migration in the fractured rock during blasting, special procedures can be applied by the blasting contractors: (1) do the complete excavation of the overburden before drilling and put mats for each blast; (2) do the complete excavation of the muck after each blast; (3) the last blasting should be the one for the private services entrance of the house and the excavation of the muck should begin at the junction between the road trench and the services entrance trench. Another technique consists in the pumping of interstitial air in the muck with a vacuum truck immediately after each blast.

With large destructive avalanches in transportation corridors, various States and Provinces have started implementing RACS into their summer construction projects to minimize traffic shutdowns. Since 2014 in North America, many of the projects are requiring the RACS deployment boxes to be removable by light duty helicopter for loading and summer storage. This is to further remove workers from the mountain tops, where inclement weather and Occupational Health and Safety concerns are widespread. We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue.

Remote Avalanche Control Systems (RACS) which uses solid explosives has been used in Europe since 1996 and North America since 1999. With large destructive avalanches in transportation corridors, various States and Provinces have started implementing RACS into their summer construction projects to minimize traffic shutdowns. Since 2014 in North America, many of the projects are requiring the RACS deployment boxes to be removable by light duty helicopter for loading and summer storage. This is to further remove workers from the mountain tops, where inclement weather and Occupational Health and Safety concerns are widespread. We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue. In spring of 2016, the Inauen Schatti company of Switzerland started the development of a flyable RACS deployment box to complement their 2 stand alone tower systems. To go along with the new flyable deployment box, a new S-Load charge carrier was developed. The newly developed and patented S-Load explosive charge for the LM32 RACS system features a mechanism which combines the explosive and priming material just before the blast. These are stored separately during transport and storage in the LM32 RACS deployment box. The S-load is divided into two parts. The upper part contains the plastic bobbin and ignition sequence (impact pull wire igniter, safety fuse and #8 blasting cap), whereby the explosive material and detonating cord are positioned in the lower part of the explosive container. The explosive material and ignition sequence are separated by a certified housing during transport and storage. The key idea of the S-Load system was to achieve a maximum level of safety by keeping the priming components separate from the explosive material until just before detonation. Because of this the S-Load and the LM32 tower remains safe during transport by helicopter or when being stored in the deployment box on the mountain side in the avalanche start zone.

In this paper the performance effects of various shaped charge liner designs will be discussed. Several different charges will be tested and the liner design will be reviewed based on the performance in testing. The first type of shaped charge to be tested is a conical charge with dual confinement. For the purpose of this paper, dual confinement is a shaped charge with two liners but containing one explosive charge. Several charges with different dual confinement designs will be tested. Variations in configuration include charges with similar angle and similar diameter. The second type is a double conical shaped charge configuration. A double shaped charge will be considered to be two complete charges formed into a single cone. The goal of the project is to determine if any of the designs increase the efficiency and/or effectiveness of the shaped charge in comparison to the standard conical shaped charge. A standard conical charge will be detonated against a witness plate to get a standard depth of penetration or a baseline. All charges will have a seven cone diameter standoff, allowing the data to be compared to the control charge. Computer modeling will be used to predict the results of the testing that will be conducted. The actual results will be compared to the computer simulation for validation.

If the iron ore loss is 15% in the process of mining, the total iron ore loss in the world will be about 461 million tons, this is equal to the total production of 230 iron ore mines each of which produces 2 million-tons of iron ore per year. Based on a series of blast tests in the Malmberget mine, this paper shows that ore recovery can be markedly increased by improving blasting technology such as choosing a correct primer position and making use of shock wave collision. The paper further suggests that a high ore recovery can not only reduce natural resource loss and mining cost but also prolong the life of a mine. In addition, the paper shows an example of reducing blast-caused rock damage in the roofs and walls of underground drifts (tunnels) by using new blasting methods in the Malmberget mine. Finally, the paper shows how the Malmberget mine has successfully reduced the ground vibrations, without adversely affecting fragmentation and ore recovery in sublevel caving mining.

The signature hole method uses a convolution operation to predict the waveform of a production blast based on the record of a waveform produced by a single blast hole. Convolution is a mathematical operation on two functions, (generally the product) to produce a third one. Recent research communication and publications highlight a lack of discussion in the literature about the available methodologies to calculate the convolution for blast vibration prediction. The goal of this paper is to discuss and present in detail for students in ground vibrations from blasting, several techniques to calculate the convolution between signals when the signature hole method is used. Convolution is a straightforward operation when signals produced by each hole are assumed the same, however; variations in the signals from each hole in a production blast require a more complex convolution operation. A graphical procedure is shown in this paper to solve a convolution when signals vary hole-to-hole (as expected in a mining production blast). The graphical methodology was tested using a recorded blast event and the results were compared to the regular mathematical procedure (convolution) and the results from a commercial software used in the mining industry. Results show that the graphical procedure is in agreement with the results from the other two.

Introduction The United States Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service (MMS) is mandated under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSL A) and the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to oversee leasing, exploration, development, and production of mineral and renewable energy resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Under these authorities, MMS is responsible for permitting and overseeing an array of offshore operations; some of which involve the underwater detonation of explosive charges. Explosives are most critical for their use in the severance of bottom-founded piles and well components during the decommissioning of OCS platforms and well abandonment work.

The term “Explosive” or “Explosives” whenever used in this ordinance, shall be held to mean and include any chemical compound or mechanical mixture that contains any oxidizing and combustible units, or other ingredients, in such proportions, quantities or packing that an ignition by fire, by friction, by concussion, by percussion or by detonator of any part of the compound or mixture may cause such a sudden generation of highly heated gases that the resultant gaseous pressures are capable of producing destructive effects on contiguous objects or of destroying life or limb, and includes all the articles specifically mentioned in Section 3 herein, and all other similar articles

Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.
