"In mineral processing, the recovery and/or concentration of the value components cannot occur in one operational stage, therefore requiring the use of separation circuits based on several flotation stages. The components to be separated are typically distributed at different concentrations and different particle sizes, resulting in different levels of recovery. Typically, more than one value component must be selectively removed by exploiting the differences in the components’ floatability at different pH values, pulp potential and particle size. Several methods for the design of these circuits are available in the literature, but comparatively few studies present circuit analysis tools or address the design of a multiple-product flotation circuit. In this study, global sensitivity analysis was used to analyze a flotation circuit with several products, such as copper, lead and zinc. This analysis was based on the Eureka mine concentrator plant. The analysis was performed for each of the sections of the circuit as an overall evaluation of the circuit. The Sobol’ method and the correlation method were used to evaluate the Eureka mine concentrator plant using the SimLab 2.2 software."

It is known that an addition of rigid particles into a fluid medium changes the flow field. Therefore, the rheological behavior of suspensions will be hardly Newtonian, such as their continuum phase. This phenomena was studied by Einstein in 1906 (Einstein, 1956) for the single case of spherical particles in a continuum liquid of a very dilute suspension. The final analysis applied for suspensions was derived from the evaluation of the behavior of ideal gases, finding a simple expression for the viscosity of the dispersion. All the following works about the hydrodynamics of suspensions at low and high solid contents was based in the Einstein´s model. For clay minerals suspensions where the physical and chemical properties of the particles are complex, it was found that the Einstein´s model is not a good approximation, even so for the most dilute dispersions. The present paper shows a new approximation that describes the non-Newtonian behavior of the suspensions of clays, and the attempt of understand how the different fine sizes, shapes and physico-chemical properties of clay particle surfaces give specific characteristics of plasticity, viscosity or visco elasticity to suspensions. Batch biosorption experiments were carried out for the bio-remediation of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions using Serratia marcescens, a Gram negative, heterotroph and Gram positive bacterial isolates from a chromite mine. The influence of various experimental parameters such as contact time, pH, concentration of Cr (VI) ions and amount of biomass was evaluated with respect to the uptake of Cr (VI). The bio-sorption of Cr (VI) was found to be quite rapid and the percentage biosortion was found to increase with increase in the equilibrium chromium concentration. The free energy of biosorption of Cr (VI) was estimated to be in the range of -23 to -25 kJ/mol for the chosen bacteria. The uptake of chromium by the bacteria was confirmed by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. As a follow up of this study, bacterial strains resistant to hexavalent chromium were isolated from a chromite mine in Karnataka, India and identified as Arthrobacter sp., Micrococcus sp. and Exiguobacterium sp. using 16s rRNA sequencing. The efficacy of the bacterial isolates for Cr (VI) uptake was assessed and over 90% bioremoval could be achieved for Serratia marcescens and Micrococcus sp. isolate. The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.

The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. The benefits of the programme for Anglo American Platinum have been tangible, and will be discussed in the paper. Keywords: graduate training, technology transfer

"The Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) consists of an inverted fluidized bubbly bed, located above a system of parallel inclined channels. This novel arrangement enhances the hydrodynamics of flotation in a number of ways. Firstly, the free-surface of the flotation cell is enclosed via a fluidized bed distributor, ensuring uniform application of wash water to promote desliming. Secondly, foams can be variable in their stability and lack permeability. Hence this system is preferably operated in the absence of foam, instead opting for a bubbly zone of high bubble volume fraction through the use of a very high gas flux and/or wash water flux. Discharge of the product proceeds upwards through a central port of narrow cross-sectional area. Thirdly, the system of inclined channels increases the segregation between the bubbles and the water, ensuring the bubbly zone remains contained within the upper vertical zone, and the liquid flux reporting to the overflow is low. The expanded operating regime of the RFC was investigated by covering a very broad range of gas fluxes, up to 5.5 cm/s, and wash water fluxes, over 2 cm/s. Both laboratory and pilot plant performances were quantified by the recovery of hydrophobic particles and rejection of the hydrophilic particles, using model and industrial coal feeds. The new system hydrodynamics was found to offer significant advantages in flotation kinetics, desliming, and particle recovery across a broad particle size range. Bubble interfacial flux reached as high as 600 m2/m-2s-1. The upper system consists entirely of a high volume fraction of bubbles, which provides a "safety-net" to protect against the detachment of coarse particles, and a highly permeable zone for counter-current washing of the flotation product. Under relatively extreme conditions selective stripping of the product is observed, resulting in grade recovery values beyond those achievable using the tree flotation method."

Solvent extraction of gallium from Bayer solution of Jajarm Alumina plant was investigated us-ing Kelex100 as extractant. Taguchi experimental design method was used in order to optimize the separation factor of Ga and Al. Optimum conditions were obtained as follows: Temperatuer: 65°C, volume ratio of aqueous phase to organic phase: 3.0:1.0, process time: 60min and organic phase containing 15vol.% Kelex100, 5vol.% isodecanol in kerosene. In this conditions, 74% gallium and 0.3% aluminum was extracted and separation factor was obtained 828.63.

"Russia is among the nations holding the world's largest lithium ore reserves. Lithium is of key importance for the global economy. Therefore, it is important to review the current state of technology research aimed at finding the most effective solutions for the recovery of lithium from promising reserves in Russia. In Russia, a number of process solutions for the flotation of spodumene into salable concentrate (5% Li2O) have been implemented at the earlier existing complex low-grade ore concentration project. By applying these solutions, a sample of high-grade spodumene ore (4.7% Li2O) of the Greenbushes deposit was processed into a spodumene concentrate (7.5% Li2O) at a high recovery (~93%) of lithium. In Australia and Canada, new processes have been developed for the recovery of high-grade spodumene concentrates from high-grade ores using dense medium separation and flotation. For the recovery of mica lithium concentrates from low-grade ore, a flotation process was developed in Russia using the cationic collector ANP-2 and Oxifos-B as an additional collector. Low-grade ore containing 0.14% of lithium oxide was processed into a 2.7% Li2O concentrate. New hydrometallurgical lithium concentrate and ore processes are developed to avoid high-temperature (>1000 °C) roasting. The Sileach process (Australia) includes leaching of lithium ore with sulfuric acid in the presence of a halogen-containing component at a temperature of 95-115 °C. In the Russian process, lithium is recovered into an alkaline solution from low-grade spodumene ore in a pressure alkaline leaching environment (250 °C, NaOH concentration > 300 g/l). The developed concentration and hydrometallurgical methods will allow to design on their basis efficient processes for recovering salable products for hi-tech industries from lithium ores.INTRODUCTION Lithium has many unique and important properties. It is the least dense hard metal. Its alloys have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Lithium has the lowest melting point of all known solid elements and is used as a highly-effective heat transfer medium. The high demand for lithium is due primarily to its unique electrochemical potential and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is used in the production of glass and ceramics, in petrochemicals, metals, medical and other industries. Since the late 20th century, the electronics industry has been the largest consumer of lithium. In recent years, lithium has attracted much attention also as an important component of ultra-lightweight electronic devices. It is also the preferred metal for electric batteries used in mobile electronic devices, vehicles, household power generators, making it an important resource for the development of environmentally friendly technology. Leading automotive brands have ambitious plans for the production of electric cars — Tesla Motors, VW, Toyota, GM, BYD Auto. It is expected that the production of electric vehicles alone will triple the demand for lithium by 2025. A sharp increase in the production of lithium is expected. Lithium has all the prerequisites to become a strategic resource of the 21st century. (Deutsche Bank, 2016; Bradley et al, 2017)"

The internal parameters of ball mill are very important in the grinding process and have significant impact on the grinding results. Accurate measurement of the internal parameters of ball mill is crucial and indispensable for optimization and control of grinding process. In this paper, a novel tri-sensor measurement method was used to measure the external signals (i.e., bearing pressure, sound intensity and power consumption) of ball mill. Mathematical models, which link the external signals of ball mill with its internal parameters, were established to predict the internal parameters of ball mill. Experimental results showed that the mathematical models could directly predict the internal parameters of ball mill once the external signals were obtained. The tri-sensor measurement method and the mathematical models proposed in this paper provided a new way and solid basis for optimization and control of ball milling.

The surface-active agent, like sodium humate, in the present systems produces a very stable suspension. Saline water up to 15% is used as a flocculating agent for recovery of water from the dispersed phase containing 1% solid. The recovered water in the presence of humate at different concentrations (0.05-0.2%) and at pH 8 also produces a stable dispersed phase of iron ore fines and tailings. The beneficiation techniques adopted in the present systems can increase ~ 2-3% iron value in the concentrate of iron ore fine, however, for tailings the increase in iron value is not observed. The selection and preparation of activated carbon suitable for specific application can often involve exhaustive adsorbent preparation and testing. This work examined an emerging technique based on modelling the correlation of observed adsorption capacity to the carbon characteristics as a means of decoupling the roles of carbon textural and surface chemical properties. The insights to these specific roles are then used in tailor-making adsorbents and in establishing the optimal carbon properties for specific application. In this study, a series of activated carbons prepared from bagasse by physical and chemical techniques and commercially available carbons were used in developing the models. These carbons were tested for the adsorption of thiourea-gold (I) chloride complexes. Thiourea is an important alternative gold lixiviant with the potential to address current ecological and safety concerns in the extraction of gold. A four-component model, which correlated the adsorption gold capacity to carbon textural and surface chemical properties, was proposed. The model fit was assessed using multi-linear regression and a partial F-test. This was followed by goodness of fit test achieved through r2, adjusted?r2 and mean square error (MSE) values. The results suggest the adsorption of the gold-thiourea complex is strongly influenced by the internal surface area and pH of the carbon. Tailor-made activated carbon from bagasse showed adsorption gold capacities of up to 198 mgAu/g adsorbent, demonstrating the potential of bagasse as a precursor for gold adsorbents and of this empirical modelling approach in developing adsorbents for metal recovery.

Mining activities belong to human history, they are lost in the mists of time. They usually impact on large portions of the territory, both directly (exploitation areas and logistic activities directly related to exploitation) and indirectly (exploited material handling, processing and storage areas). As a result, at the end of mine life cycle, dismissed areas usually cannot be directly re-utilized without efficient and well addressed rehabilitation actions. Main goal of the proposed approach was to analyze the results obtained when a set of procedures, based on the collection and the analysis of remote sensed data, is developed to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation of land contaminated by extractive industry activities and to perform a monitoring and registration of the environmental impact of such operations by the application and the integration of modern information technologies, as Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study was developed in the framework of the EU-Asia program of the European union (EXTRACT-IT Project-Contract No: CN/ASIA IT&C/006 (89870): Application of Information Technologies for the sustainable management of Extractive industry activities) and it was addressed to three different dismissed mine areas in India, Thailand and China, respectively. The results, in terms of methodologies selected, strategies applied and results obtained, are described with particular reference to Fuxin coal mine area in China.

Anodic reaction mechanism of complicated antimony-lead concentrate in Slurry Electrolysis has been investigated by the anodic polarization curves determined under various conditions. The main reactions on the anode are the oxidation of FeCln (2-n), though the oxidation of jamesonite particle on the anode can occur during the whole process, it is less. With the help of mineralogy study and relevant tests, the leaching reaction mechanism of jamesonite and gudmundite during Slurry Electroly-sis has been ascertained also. Because of the oxidation reaction of FeCl3 produced by antimony-lead concentrate itself, the non-oxidation complex acid dissolution of jamesonite, the oxidation complex acid dissolution of gudmundite, and the oxidation of air carried by stirring, the leaching ratio of antimony reaches to about 35% when using HCl-NH4Cl solution to leach antimony-lead concentrate directly. So given the theoretical electric quantity, which to oxide antimony in Slurry Electrolysis, all of antimony, lead and iron, which contained in antimony-lead concentrate, are leached.

Ca-containing gangue minerals such as Fluorite, Calcite have same surface activity point--calcium ions and approximate floatability with scheelite, it is difficult to achieve good dressing index of rough concentrate of scheelite. Mono-mineral experiments and ore tests indicate that, according to mineral composition, gangue minerals can be inhibited selectively by adopting suitable regulators, then the separation of scheelite from gangue minerals can be realized effectively. Mechanism analysis was taken by zeta potentials measurements and FTIR tests. Good dressing indexes are also obtained in practical ore tests and industrial tests. Reverse-flotation technology is often applied in iron ore dressing plant, in order to enhance the quality of iron concentrate from magnetic separation. However, this technology has disadvantages in operating cost, energy consumption, and environmental protection. Developing innovative equipment to process magnetite ore more-effectively is a way to get rid of these disadvantages of reverse flotation and improve the quality of iron concentrate. This paper describes the development of Complex Flashing-Field Magnetic Cleaner, a new kind of equipment based on the principle of combination of separation in magnetic field and separation in gravity field. This innovative equipment possesses a tailor-made magnetic system and has the characteristics of a magnetic field, which can strengthen the formation of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of gangue minerals, improving the quality of separation. The automatic control system developed specifically for this equipment can further increase the accuracy of separation and stabilize the process. Test results showed that this equipment is reliable in operation, economically beneficial, and has large potential of application.

"South Africa is the world?s second largest producer of titanium bearing minerals, but apart from producing titanium mineral concentrate to form TiO2 slag, little further value is added in South Africa to mined minerals. Various studies were undertaken by both government and the private sector in an un-coordinated manner until 2007 when the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) planned and adopted a national strategy to establish a local titanium metal industry through the research and development of key technologies that would provide a competitive advantage to such a local industry. The strategy entailed a two-pronged approach in the development of this capability, viz. simultaneous investments in the development of high-level human capital and technology in the fields of titanium metal powder production and downstream titanium metal powder processing technologies. To date significant progress has been made to establish research and/or pilot scale facilities in the following technical areas: TiCl4 production technology, titanium powder production technology, high energy milling of titanium powder, metal injection moulding facilities, rapid production of large components using laser additive manufacturing technology, investment casting of titanium, resource efficient machining of titanium and friction stir welding of titanium. Supporting technologies are also at an advanced stage through investments in titanium powder spheroidization and direct rolling of titanium powder. The intent with investment in some of these areas is not to develop new technology per se, but rather to establish local capability that will position South Africa to collaborate with other organisations in the world so that technologies can be acquired and transferred when needed in the future."
