"Adopted in 2003, theses guidelines are intended to assist the Qualified Person(s) in the planning, supervision, preparation and reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserve estimates. The report is divided into two broad sections “General Guidelines” appropriate for most metals and “Guidelines Specific to Particular Commodities” for potash, industrial minerals, uranium and coal. “These guidelines are reference in the Companion Policy of NI 43-101 with a statement that a qualified person classifying a mineral deposit as a mineral resource or mineral reserve should follow them.”Executive SummaryThe following is a summary, in table format, of the main elements of the Estimation Best Practice Committee's report ""Estimation of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Best Practice Guidelines"". While the summary table is provided for convenience, the Committee recommends that the report be read in its entirety and the table summary not be used as a stand alone document. These guidelines are not intended to be either prescriptive or exhaustive. They do not preclude innovation. Preamble: These guidelines have been prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) led Estimation Best Practices Committee. They are intended to assist the Qualified Person(s) (QP) in the planning, supervision, preparation and reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates. All MRMR estimation work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the direction of a QP in accordance with National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) and related forms. A QP is defined in NI 43-101 as ""an individual who is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five (5) years of experience in mineral exploration, mine development, mine operation, project assessment or any combination of these; has experience relevant to the subject matter of the mineral project and technical report; and is a member in good standing of a professional association"". Disclosure of MRMR estimates is to be made in accordance with industry standard definitions approved by the CIM (the CIM Standards adopted by the CIM Council in August 2002) which have been incorporated by reference into NI 43-101."

"The Mineral Research Centre of the Quebec Department of Energy and Resources has worked extensively on the development of a dry process to extract pure mica flakes from a phlogopite ore. The liberation of mica from the gangue is effected basically by impact crushing, and the ground ore is screened into several fractions, each having a fairly narrow range of grain size. Each sized fraction is then fed to an air separator where heavy grains are separated from light flaky grains. Heavy fractions are returned to hammer mills where gangue minerals are ground finer and blocky mica particles are exfoliated. A second stage of screening is performed and each fraction is sent to an air separator. This sequence is repeated until mica products are virtually free of gangue. These different fractions are then treated in a cage mill in which mica flakes undergo a more orderly exfoliation along cleavage planes. The ground mica is again submitted to a final screening stage, after which each fraction constitutes a final commercial product.This process permits the recovery of about 70% of the mica contained in the ore. The over-all process will be described along with technical details of each unit operation. Recent work on a wet grinding method to produce very fine mica will also be discussed.IntroductionRecords of production of mica in Quebec date back to 1886. Production has been more or less continuous since that time, with peak activity during the war years. Production was interrupted in 1966, but started again in 1972 when Marietta Resources and Laviolette Mining and Metallurgical Corporation started their joint operation in Canton Suzor, northwestern Quebec. Mica deposits of more or less importance exist in different parts of Quebec, of which three have attracted attention in recent years: the Canton Suzor deposit, the Canton Lamy deposit and the Canton Chasseur deposit. The Suzor orebody was first identified by Carl Faesler in 1936, who described the rock as ""brown biotite in flakes half an inch in diameter, with interstitial augite, apatite and feldspar""."

"A fast, reliable and accurate method for radium-226 determination in environmental water samples has been devised, using an alpha spectroscopic technique. The correlation between barium-133 and radium-226 in the barium-radium sulphate precipitation mechanism was studied and in the limited experimental recovery range, the coefficient of correlation was r = 0.986. A self-absorption study for various barium carrier concentrations was also undertaken to obtain the least broadening of alpha energy line widths. An optimum value of 0.3 mg barium carrier was obtained for chemical recovery in the range of 85%.IntroductionWith the increase in uranium mining activities, the migration and spread of radioactivity via various environmental pathways is of great concern. Because of its inherent biological hazard and relatively long half-life, (approximately 1620 years), raidum-226 is frequently monitored as a measure of radioactive contamination of the environment. It is, therefore, necessary to modify existing methods for rapid determination of radium-226 in environmental samples for quick corrective measures in the event of seepage, dam leakage or discharge violations."

"The People's Republic of China could very well be considered the largest untapped mineral and metal resource in the world. The proven reserves of antimony, barite, bauxite, fluorspar, graphite, lithium, magnesite, mercury, molybdenum, phosphate, pyrite, rare earths, talc, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium and zinc are among the largest in the world.Any company involved in the purchase or supply of industrial raw materials has undoubtedly followed the phenomenal growth of some of the Chinese mineral commodities, where growths in production of more than 200010 have occurred during the past ten years, for commodities like barite, cement, gold, gympsum silver and talc. Others, like bauxite and phosphate, experienced production increases in one year alone of over 45%, from 1986 through 1987!A popular rationale in the United States during the past two years has been the acknowledgment by Professor David Calleo, of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Studies, that ""America is not sinking-the rest of the world is rising"". While we recognized this rise to be that of economic power for Japan, Korea, Brazil, Taiwan and, more recently, the newly-combined Germanies, China has also successfully completed her own modern five year development binge. But with each boom there is also a bust, and the start of the 1990sfor China shows signs of economic distress. China posted a budget deficit equivalent of US$1.9 billion in 1989 coupled with official inflation at 18010. Projections for 1990 are for US$1.8 billion deficit and inflation as high as 24%. However, government spending in the first seven months of the year climbed 16.4%, outpacing an 11.6% rise in revenue. Spending increases have been related to the government policy to keep prices on domestic goods artificially low, through subsidies, and to bailout inefficient state companies."

"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. "This paper is based on data generated between October, 1986 and October, 1989, during the implementation of an Ecological Engineering close-out for a zinc mine in Northern Ontario, where 690000 tonnes of tailings contain 41.1% pyrite and 4.1% pyrrhotite. The objective was to determine rates of sulphide oxidation and iron precipitation in the tailings. Those rates are relevant for the assessment of the long-term effectiveness of biological systems employed in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated drainage issuing from tailings.Data were collected on the topography and stratigraphy of the tailings basin, subsurface temperatures and groundwater levels, and chemical analyses were made of water samples collected from a number of piezometers. The thickness of unsaturated tailings varied widely between individual piezometer locations; annual maxima ranged from 0.67 m to 3.55 m, and annual minima from 0 to 2.68 m. Sulphate concentrations ranged from 36 mg/L to 20180 mg/L; iron concentrations from 0.36 mg/L to 9938 mg/L; and zinc concentrations from 0.33 mg/L to 1123 mg/L.The geochemistry of the piezometer samples suggests that some of the initial Fe content, resulting from metal sulphide oxidation, is subsequently precipitated in the tailings pile and, possibly, in the underlying unconsolidated sediments, probably in the form of iron-hydroxide and Na-jarosite. Other metals such as Zn may be co-precipitated with Fe. The discharge of a portion of these metals to the environment would be delayed by this process. Some of the initial sulphate may also be lost from solution, probably by precipitation of gypsum; approximate saturation degrees for gypsum ranged from -3.27 to +0.47. The precipitated minerals will somewhat decrease the porosity and permeability of the tailings.Sulphide-oxidation rates, calculated using the analytical results and the estimated amount of annual recharge at the tailings site, average 0.0057 mol/kg/yr. Calculated iron-precipitation rates average 0.000386 mol/kg/yr. It is concluded that the characteristics of seepage from mining wastes may change with time, reflecting the solubilization of precipitated secondary minerals."

"The use of a torque wrench to establish the amount of actual load developed on an expansion anchor bofting system dates back to work completed in the early 1950s. The advent of ultrasonic measurement systems and hydraulic torque wrenches has made it possible for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to perform torque-tension measurements in the laboratory and the field much more accurately. The results indicate that the amount of initial boft preload may be overestimated by amounts in excess of 45% of the expected load using torque wrenches. This inaccuracy is primarily due to the friction that occurs between the bearing plate and the head of the boft. These parameters become extremely important when the support system is being used to prevent joint members from slipping relative to each other or when the boft acts as a heavy spring to clamp two or more sections together. Methods to overcome the frictional losses are presented in conjunction with a laboratory method to determine the actual torque-tension ratios for expansion anchor and combination bolting systems.IntroductionMechanically anchored roof bolts have been widely used in the mining industry since their introduction in 1947. Estimates made in 1989 indicate that out of 85 million fixtures, approximately 49 million bolting fixtures still use applied tension to complete the reinforcement necessary to maintain stable openings. Nearly 85 million bolts are used yearly. The most widely used bolt is the resin-anchored headed rebar, followed by standard mechanical roof bolts, specialty bolts (mechanically anchored, resin enhanced fixtures) , and combination bolts . Po st-tensioned resin rebars, combination systems, and friction stabilizers make up the remaining 10% of the units used (Fig. I).For mechanical, combination, and tension rebar bolts, the bolt tension is the primary means of reinforcing the roof, but in many cases, because of poor installation procedures, the bolts are ineffective. Mine operators recognize the importance of proper installation procedures. Long-term bolt tension measurements are required in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)In each bolting cycle, the actual torque or tension of the first tensioned bolt installed with each drill head shall be measured immediately after it is installed. Thereafter, for each drill head used, at least one roof bolt out of every four installed shall be measured for actual torque or tension. If the actual torque or tension of any roof bolts measured is not within the range specified in the roof control plan, corrective action shall be taken."

"The proposed classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical and economic parameters is designed to be used as a communication tool to identify for investors, bankers, and financial analysts the degree of risk associated with a specific class of ore reserves. The class designation identifies the degree of accuracy of the estimates for tonnage and grade of annual production volumes of ore. It thus enables decision makers to quantify the risks and uncertainties inherent to the ore reserve in achieving over-all economic goals and annual financial objectives.IntroductionDuring the evaluation, in 1980, of the Creede silver deposit in Colorado, U.S.A., as a potential bulk mining project, the authors were faced with the problem of conveying to senior management the risks and uncertainties that are implied by using common or conventional classification systems to categorize ""ore reserves"". The estimated numbers for tonnages and grade of the projected ore reserves represented the only entry for future revenue from the project. It was, therefore, necessary to convey to management the level of risk associated with those numbers when implementing further stages of development, and to convey what impact significant differences would have on the profitability of the project. The desire to quantify these risks led to a revised definition of ""ore"" and to a re-examination of the classification system of ""ore reserves"". Traditional methods for estimating tonnage and grade of reserves do not include a quantification of the errors of these estimates. The advent of geostatistical methods made this quantification possible. The proper application of geostatistical methods, with adequate geological input and a reliable set of sample data, is essential to its validity.Others have proposed a classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical parameters. Diehl and David (1982) recognized ""that concepts of proven, probable and possible have to be linked to the production rate or time horizon"". Royle (1977) had also addressed this problem. Forsyth (1987) pointed out that bankers are concerned with ""the probability that the variability will fall within a certain degree of accuracy"" especially for grade estimates, and would like to see grades expressed together with the error of the estimate at the 950Jo confidence level."

Is there a relationship among the Sudbury nickel ores, the Cobalt deposits, and the Huronian, Athabascan and North Australian uranium provinces? All are within intracratonic basins, with ore near basal unconformities. There are similarities in the geochemical "fingerprints" pointing to basic igneous rock affiliations. Some show a time relationship to basic igneous activity and to great rift systems. Many basic dykes show radioactivity at their edges. A spatial relationship between the uranium-cobalt-nickel ore at Midwest Lake, Athabasca, and basic igneous rock is reported. These remarks are not meant to imply, necessarily, a direct genetic connection between the basic dykes, etc., and the ore. In some cases, the relationship may be similar to that noted between basic and ultrabasic intrusives and volcanic massive sulphide ore deposits. Crustal thinning in these areas, associated with graben, appears to have favoured volcanic activity, as well as basic intrusives. Probably, the potential of the Huronian should be re thought . Athabascan-type ore may be present . New data on mineralization in Turner Township, Ontario, suggest this. The mineral possibilities of other basins should be reconsidered. It is to be remembered that the Athabascan and Kombolgie basins were neglected for many years. Intracratonic sedimentary-igneous basins contain many of the greatest mineral fields of the world.

"This paper will discuss the application of tools and the evolution of computer-assisted procedures in the production planning process at Quintett e Coal Limited (QCL). In 1986, QCL produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal from their surface mining operation located in north eastern British Columbia. The structural complexity of the sedimentary deposit and high rate of mining necessitate the consideration of large amounts of geological information which continually updates the interpretation. There are multiple unit operations required during the process of mining through a given multi-seam sequence, which results in many interdependent faces, and multiple iterations of scheduling sequences in order to satisfy a given set of objectives. In order to facilitate these activities in a timely fashion, it was recognized that a computer systems' capability needed to be developed which could increase the efficiency of information input, manipulation and output. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) has been operating a large metallurgical open pit coal mine in northeastern British Columbia, since 1982. The mine produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal in 1986 for export to Japan. Throughout the start-up period and the subsequent build -up of production levels, it became evident that the primary producing area was comprised of extremely complex faulted structures. This has resulted in development and modification of specialized mining methods employed to effectively recover the resource. Similarly, the planning and engineering techniques employed have been evolved over the same period of time. The implementation of computerized methods has been one of the major developments in this process, including geology interpretation, modelling, reserve definition, quantification, production planning and scheduling, and graphical plan presentation. These capabilities have been employed, in various forms, for project scale feasibility work and long range planning for some time, however, the use of computer tools for short-term, detailed production planning of a complex mining environment presents a different set of problems. It is hoped that a presentation of the current state of evolution and future plan s for development will be of interest to organizations considering implementation of a similar system."

"Industry Guide 7 contains the Securities and Exchange Commission’s basic mining disclosure policy. It provides guidance for Registrants on various matters including the definition and disclosure of proven and probable reserves and the definitions of exploration, development and production stages. The definitions and disclosure instructions contained in this Guide apply to all public mining entities and their public disclosures. As NI 43-101 is law in Canada, the SEC allows mineral resources and mineral reserves prepared under CIM Definition Standards for issuers that are reporting in Canada but are also registered with the SEC. The SEC places conditions on the disclosure of these estimates. US shareholders are cautioned that the requirements under NI 43-101 and the CIM Definition Standards differ significantly from those of Industry Guide 7.Note: this Guide contains the Commission's basic mining disclosure policy. The definitions and disclosure instructions contained in this Guide apply to all public mining entities and their public disclosures pursuant to the rules of Regulation S-K. Reserves for which quantity and grade and/or quality are computed from information similar to that used for proven (measured) reserves, but the sites for inspection, sampling, and measurement are farther apart or are otherwise less adequately spaced. The degree of assurance, although lower than that for proven (measured) reserves, is high enough to assume continuity between points of observation.(4)(i) Exploration StageDincludes all issuers engaged in the search for mineral deposit (reserves) which are not in either the development or production stage."

In 2004, Rio Tinto started a major project to implement Mine Monitoring and Control (MMC) systems worldwide. A detailed selection processes was undertaken and migration to a standard system was started. Today systems are operating around the world and serve as the core of to many business processes. Implementations include highly union areas, large mines, centrally managed mines, and remote areas. Each implementation has unique challenges but all are working towards the common goal with common systems. This paper reviews two projects that Rio Tinto has deployed in diverse conditions. The projects are the Rossing Uranium upgrade from the original Wenco system to the common standard and Iron Ore of Canada?s general technology upgrade. Also discussed is the future of mining at Rio Tinto, specifically the drill automation projects, and how it is utilizing the common standard MMC systems.

"Geerite (Cu1.6S) is a rhombohedral copper sulphide which occurs naturally in epitactic replacement of sphalerite; cell dimensions closely approximate those of the host sphalerite.Geerite-type structures can be produced by leaching digenite (Cu1.8S) in ferric sulphate solutions. X -ray diffract ion and electron microprobe studies indicate that eight metastable geeritetype structures can be produced, depending upon the concentration of f erric sulphate solution used and the duration of the each. Although compositions cluster on or near values observed for natural phases, optical properties indicate that we are dealing with polymorphs of these phases. Leaching of chalcocite (CU2Sj in dilute f erric sulphate solutions produces similar results. In contrast, leaching of chalcocite in more concentrated solutions seems to produce true analogues of natural minerals.During froth flotation, sphalerite is activated with a monolayer of floatable copper sulphide with the composition, CuS, of the mineral covellite. However, covellite is not significantly more floatable than sphalerite, and has an incompatible structure because of the presence of covalently-bonded atoms of sulphur. Leaching ofdigenite was used to produce a polymorph of covellite with a geerite-type structure, compatible with that of sphalerite. This polymorph has a flotational behaviour similar to copper-activated sphalerite, suggesting that the monolayer has a geerite-type CuS structure. IntroductionIn an ideal close-packed sulphide structure the distance between sulphur layers, D, is equal to 2R 2/3, where R is the radius of the sulphur atoms. In sulphides with covalently-bonded sulphur layers, such as covellite (Fig. I), D will be an average of the number of covalentl y-bonded and close-packed sulphur layers, weighted as to the relative number of each type of layer. Both D and R are spacings which are readily identifiable structurally and on X-ray diffraction patterns. Goblel has shown that for copper-iron sulphides with metal-to-sulphur ratios between 0 and 2 and copper-to-total metal ratio s between 113 and I there are strong correlations between composition and measured D and R distances (Fig. 2). D can be represented by a single empirical equation relating interlayer spacing to composition; R must be represented by three equations relating the radius of sulphur atoms to composition. One of these equations (R, in Fig. 2) represents ideal close-packed behaviour, the other two represent sulphur radii greater than (R1) or less than (Rh) the ideal."

"In 1985, a crushing plant, located in the feed preparation area of Kidd Creek's copper smelter, was modified. The plant, which originally had treated only copper-bearing materials for the smeller, at a rate of 10 tonnes per hour, was expanded to 40 tonnes per hour capacity and modified to treat silica ores to meet the smelter’s flux requirement and also gold ores from the company's Hoyle Pond property. In the storage area adjacent to the crushing plant a 300 tonne per day gold mill was constructed.This paper outlines the construction and first year of operation of the crushing plant and gold mill with emphasis placed on the capital and operating advantages to be gained by utilizing an existing metallurgical infrastructure.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. copper-zinc-silver orebody is located 24 km north of Timmins, in Northern Ontario . Mining of this massive sulphide de posit commenced in 1966 and, in the ensuing years, a concentrator and zinc plant were constructed at the metallurgical complex, approximately 17 km by rail from the mine site . At this same site, in 1981, a copper smelter and refinery were commissioned. The smelter which utilizes the Mitsubishi smelting process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrate, has been comprehensively described in previous papers.At the time of the smelter construction, a small (10 tonnes per hour) crushing plant was installed in the smelter's feed preparation area. This plant was used to treat the copper-bearing revert material produced by the smelter, and, apart from periods when slags and matte were produced through furnace drainage at the end of each operating campaign, it was generally under-utilized. This fact, together with the requirement to devise a more cost effective method of providing silica flux for the smelting operation, was the basic rationale for modifying and expanding and crushing plan t. At the same time, development at Kidd's Hoyle Pond orebody had progressed to such a stage that a gold mill of 300 tonnes per day was warranted."

"The current state of knowledge concerning pipeline transport of coal in water slurry form is summarized for the four categories: coal-water fuels, conventional fine coal slurries, coarse coals and stabilized mixtures of coarse and fine particles. Surface chemistry is of dominant importance for coal-water fuels and considerable progress in understanding the role of surfactants has been achieved in recent years. Little generalized research on the flow of conventional fine coal slurries has been done in the past 17years, although innumerable conceptual designs and feasibility studies have been undertaken. Coarse coal slurries are fairly well understood but the model which explains their flow requires more data to be established fully. Stabilized flow mixtures should probably obey the same model as coarse coal slurries but experimental results for stabilized mixtures have not yet been incorporated in a comprehensive theory.IntroductionPipeline transportation of coal in a water vehicle has been employed for many years in coal washeries. It has been used less frequently in hydraulic mining and thermal power station fuel supply systems. "The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. "Three varieties of till are recognized in the Beardmore-Geraldton area: local lodgement till, nonlocal carbonate till, and local supraglacial till. The local lodgement till unit is examined in detail for the first time in this paper. It is the best potential overburden exploration medium for gold and other metals because its particles were locally-derived and deposited subglacially, probably within a few kilometres downglacier (southwestward) from their sources, and have not been diluted by distantly-derived glacialdebris. Both local tills are richer in gold and other metals, relative to nonlocal carbonate till. Local lodgement till rests on bedrock and was encountered frequently at or near the surface in thin drift/bedrock terrain (a widespread terrain type within the west half of the study area), and commonly at the base of boreholes in thick till terrain.INTRODUCTIONDrift prospecting in areas of glaciated terrain has been well documented (in a variety of journal publications and symposium volumes; e.g . Strobel and Faure 1987; MacDonald and Mills 1988) and has proven valuable especially where overburden thicknesses hinder traditional exploration techniques. Drift prospecting techniques may well prove valuable in the Beardmore Geraldton area. This applies especially to the Wildgoose Lake Turkey Lake area where a thick and laterally extensive sheet of nonlocal carbonate till has impeded conventional mineral exploration programs (Fig. I; note the lack of gold occurrences around Wildgoose Lake).Till in .particular has been cited as the best prospecting medium among the various types of glacial sediment (e.g. Shilts 1984). Three end member till varieties are recognized in the study area: (I) local lodgement till which rests directly on bedrock; (2) non local carbonate till; and (3) local supraglacial till which occurs predominatly within, or just downglacier of, upland areas where it commonly mantles the other till varieties. Previous authors have documented how the non local carbonate till hinders gold exploration (Geddes and Kristjansson 1986; Karrow and Geddes 1987; Kristjansson 1986; Hicock 1986, 1987a, b, 1988; Kristjansson and Thorieifson 1987; Thorleifson and Kristjansson 1987, 1988a, b) and why the local supraglacial till may be a good unit for prospecting (Hicock 1986). One detailed surficial geology map sheet of the area has been published (Kristjansson et al., 1988) and others are in preparation. Closs and Sado (1981) reported on the geochemistry of soils and glacial sediments in the west half of the study area. This paper documents the local lodgement till unit and demonstrates why it is the best overburden unit to use for drift prospecting."

"A general review of the wear problems encountered in the mining industry is presented and current practice for wear protection systems is reviewed.A new concept in wear protection is described and compared to alternative systems. Utilization of conventional stud welding technology and abrasion-resistant wear studs is shown to be a useful supplement or substitution for conventional techniques. Operating life of many consumable components can be increased by up to four fold. The technique is highly portable for on-site field application or can be used in shop environments.Details of the wear protection model and metallurgical properties of the wear component are also reviewed. Laboratory wear test data are reported to supplement field test performance or to screen potential alloy compositions for application in specific environments.A Review of Wear Problems and Wear ProtectionThe emphasis on wear protection has increased in recent years because of the increasing impact of the potential savings in time, materials and energy. A 1974 German study concluded that attention to tribology, the study of friction and wear, could save approximately $3 billion, and a study in the U.S.A. at the same time put the figure at $100 billion of which $20 billion was for materials. A more recent American study put the energy component of the potential savings at $16.2 billion per year. A recent British study estimated the total potential savings in the U.K. as $1 billion per year, with the largest savings coming from lower maintenance and replacement costs ($500 million), lower breakdown costs ($250 million) and increased machinery life ($200 million). These three major contributions are all potentially accessible in the mining industry."
