"This paper describes a series of wear-resistant ceramic materials which have been successfully used in the mineral processing industry in Canada. Applications include use with metallic ores, coal, potash and asbestos, and in other processes where wear degradation is of major concern. The paper will also deal with considerations involving the selection of the different ceramic materials available. It will cover the installation of ceramic materials on support structures under varying process ' conditions, as well as the other physical and chemical factors which have to be taken into account.IntroductionIn the mineral processing industry, large volumes of ores tailings and other materials are handled. The abrasive nature of most of these materials results in extensive wear to both handling and processing equipment.Wear ratios versus cost, production losses due to down time and wear-resistant material suitability for a given application all demand particular attention when viewed against the need for increased efficiencies in existing processes. As a consequence, a very active continuous search for materials with improved wear resistance has been carried out for many years.In this search, starting about 20 years ago, dense ceramic materials were tested and evaluated in certain applications, notably in the iron ore and asbestos operations in Eastern Canada. As a result of substantially better performance both in continuous extended life and ultimate economics realized , wear-resistant ceramic applications developed progressively in many other processing applications, replacing traditionally used materials.In the vast majority of wear-resistant ceramic applications, considerable extended life over previously used materials was established. This invariably was not just a fractional increase but, in most cases , in factors of double, triple and often all the way up to 18 and 20 times the life of alternative materials used previously. In certain applications, extended life could not be measured and appears to be indefinite.Obviously, as a result of such experiences, the progressively wider use of wear-resistant ceramic materials is now an established trend."

NICKEL minerals are known in New Brunswick but have never been reported from Nova Scotia. The attention of the writers was drawn to an occurrence of pyrrhotite, reported to carry nickel, at the Second Gold brook, Middle river, Cape Breton. The purpose of this paper is to record the occurrence and give an account of the general geological association. In a later paper it may be possible to give greater details? than are available at present. GEOLOGY The area lies at the edge of a plateau of Precambrian rocks which forms the panhandle of Cape Breton island. This plateau has a general elevation of 1,200 feet. Middle river, with its tributaries, the First, Second, and Third Gold brooks drains the area. The lower country to east and southeast of the plateau is underlain by lower Carboniferous sediments. The rocks of the plateau are presumably of Precambrian age but have never been definitely correlated with the Gold-Bearing Series of the mainland. ?There i:s; however, some resemblance, although they have apparently been more intensely mountain-built. They are essentially fine grained, sheared quartzites and slates . The general strike is east and west, with a north dip of 45° to 55°. There are smalllocal drag-folds in the area. The only igneous rock in the immediate vicinity is an intrusive pink porphyry. It has small phenocrysts of quartz and feldspar. It has intruded the sediments generally along the structural planes, but in places crosses the structure . Its intrusive character is further proved by the fact that it contains xenoliths of the quartzite.

In the past few years there has been considerable controversy on the most suitable material to be used in ventilation doors which will have to serve also as fire doors. For this reason it was thought useful at Mclntyre to find out to what extent our zinc chloride treated spruce doors were fire resistant and what protection we could expect in case of an underground fire. The doors to be tested were constructed of the same material as that used in our regular ventilation doors underground, namely, 2-inch tongue-and-groove well seasoned spuce. It is to be noted, however, that whereas the dimensions of the ventilation doors are 5 ft. by 6 ft., those of the test doors were only 14 in. by 17½ in. The treated doors were made up from lumber that l1ad been treated with chromated zinc chloride, as described in Mr. Keeley's paper. Two kinds of tests were carried out: a heat test and a flame test. An electric muffle furnace for assaying, equipped with a pyrometer, was used for the beat test, the furnace door being replaced by the wooden door to be tested. In the flame test, the door to be tested formed one end of a rectangular steel box in which was placed a large blow-torch. Air was admitted at the rear of the box. A pyrometer recorded the temperature at the inside surface of the door where flame impinged. The results of the tests are presented in the accompanying table, in which the word 'failed' is to be interpreted as meaning that the door had been damaged to the extent that smoke, but not necessarily flame, issued from its outside surface.

"The Golden Manitou mine is in the northeast quarter of Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. During the summer of 1937 a body of gold-silver-zinc ore was outlined in a series of diamond drill holes located to the west of an old copper-zinc showing in the property of Quebec Manitou Mines, Limited. In 1938, a shaft was sunk and the orebody further explored from levels at depths of 210 and 360 feet.In 1941 the western half of the Quebec Manitou property was acquired by a new company, Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, and the installation of a mining and milling plant was at once undertaken. Milling started in August 1942. The following is a summary of production to December 31, 1946:The orebodies are sulphide replacements in a sericite schist shear zone. They vary in width from 8 feet to 65 feet and range in length up to 850 feet . Much of the ore is of the 'massive sulphides' type . The sulphide minerals in the ore are pyrite and sphalerite with minor quantities of .galena, tennantite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Native silver (as wire and leaf silver) has been found in vugs and as coatings along fractures. In one section of the mine a few specks of gold were observed. Spectrographic analysis of ore samples has indicated the presence of zinc silicate."

"IntroductionSince the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gapru.Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron, that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Francois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the king of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors:• the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region;• the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry;• the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, indispensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace;• the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery."

New applications for conventional metals will be found and the enhancement of certain properties of these conventional metals mean continued demand. "In 1984, a provincial inquiry into ground control and emergency preparedness in Ontario mines was commissioned by the Minister of Labour for Ontario. One of the recommendations put forth by the committee conducting this inquiry was that the Ontario mining regulations be modified to address more effectively the assessment of mine design. Mining regulations now require that every mine in the province annually assess its design with respect to ground stability. Subsequently, the Ministry of Labour has embarked on a ground control audit program to gather as much information as possible about the ground control programs in place at Ontario mines. In 1988, 47 underground mines were audited. The audits are intended to provide an overview of the level of engineering effort that is devoted to ground control on a provincial basis, by identifying the type of geotechnical information that is collected by each mine and how this information is used for stability analysis purposes in rationalizing excavation and support system designs. Also, the audits serve as an indicator of the severity of ground stability problems at individual mines, and how these problems are dealt with.This paper consists of information that has been extracted from the first series of ground control audits that were conducted in 1988. Specifically, the paper describes the types of support systems that are used in Ontario mines. It also discusses the rationale for local ground support selection, and the quality control programs that are in place for assessing the performance of installed ground support. As well, the type of geotechnical information that is collected, and to what extent it is used for the purpose of designing ground support systems, is reviewed"

Fifty per cent. increased lump coal production and at the same time a reduction of from 20 to 40 per cent. in explosive consumption. These results were achieved by the use of the rock-dust cartridge method of stemming shots in the Ruhr coal mines, as announced by Dr. Alfred Stettbacher in the September 1923 number of the Explosive Engineer. Immediately, the explosive and the coal-mining industries on this continent became intensely interested. Considerable experimental work has been carried on in a number of American and Canadian mines during the past year, by which our engineers have become assured that the use of rock-dust cart-ridges for stemming shots increases the efficiency of explosives and promotes safety in coal mines.

"Unanticipated low recovery or extraction of gold from heap leachable are can often be attributed 10 phenomena such as non-uniform percolation (channelling) of solution through heaps, excessively slow percolation rates due to densification of ore during stacking on the pads and parasitic or competing reactions of the cyanide solution with undesirable elements or geochemical ""impurities"" in the ore. The nature and causes of these phenomena are discussed in this paper, and it is suggested that geotechnical and geochemical expertise can contribute significantly to a better understanding of the relationship between laboratory results and actual field performance of the leaching process. Recommendations are made for bench-scale metallurgical testing to be complemented by geochemical and geotechnical laboratory evaluations, to ensure more successful heap leach projects. IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering metals from low grade ores which has now come into widespread application particularly for gold and silver metals in the United States.The heap leach process involves percolating a lixiviant (leaching agent) solution through broken or crushed ore (Chamberlain and Pojar, 1984). In the case of gold a dilute sodium cyanide solution is used and crushed ore is ""heaped"" on specially prepared impervious pads.The potential for use of heaping leaching methods for northwestern Ontario gold deposits was discussed by Beard (1983), who suggested that the use of this extraction technique in Canada should grow significantly for low grade ores as well as for small high grade deposits which cannot justify the installation of a new mill or the use of remote custom milling facilities. Two other potential situations for lise of a heap leaching extraction method are : as a low capital cost cash generator in the opening phase of a larger new project, and as a low cost output augmenter to complement a milling operation."

Non-swelling bentonite has been quarried in Manitoba by Pembina Mountain Clays Limited since 1941. It occurs in several thin layers near the base of the Pembina Member of the Upper Cretaceous Vermilion River Formation, and is quarried from the narrow outcrop belt along the slope of the Manitoba Escarpment. It is marketed both as natural and activated bentonite for a variety of specialized uses. Percolation of acidic water through bentonite has produced a naturally activated bentonite with good absorbent properties; these properties are enhanced by treatment with sulphuric acid to produce an activated bentonitefor decolourizing petroleum and vegetable oil.

IN RECENT PAST YEARS, the mining industry has expanded rapidly and mining engineers have not been generated in sufficient numbers to sustain this growth. Canada has not been alone with this problem, which has resulted in considerable soul-searching as to what the solution might be. Because of the unfavourable economics of running small departments such as mining, metallurgy, ceramic engineering, etc., one approach in some cases has been to put these departments together to form a department of mineral science which now has a broader base structure. Another solution has been the "conversion kit" program which has been conducted both at universities and in industry. At universities, such programs have consisted of converting graduates of other engineering disciplines into mining engineers. In some of the large mining corporations, extensive training programs have been used with the same aim.

Anode vessels are often relined with refractory every one to two years and a typical reline time can take between 16-20 days. Modem refractory designs using dense, corrosion resistant brick applied directly to the vessel shell in the high wear areas around and above the tuyeres and at the slagline can yield a lining life of up to 4-5 years before a complete reline is necessary. Installation methods using brick delivery on roller conveyors through an endwall access port and complete anchoring of the brick to allow for lining self-support can take days off the installation time. It is possible, therefore, to reduce the refractory relining period by 50% and increase lining life by 100% compared to typical anode repair schemes. Cu2007

MR. C. S. Gibson: Mr. Chairman, I listened with much interest to Mr. Corlett's paper. Those of us who are directly engaged in mine ventilation and dust control are impressed by the improved atmospheric conditions to be derived from the use of methods of mining such as those in operation at Aldermac, which Mr. Corlett has just described, and those employed at Noranda. It is a well known fact that drilling-dust is one of the most potent factors in the production of silicosis in mines handling ores containing quartz, so that from that angle the use of diamond drills, instead of percussion drills, to drill ore for blasts in stopes is an important development. A second point which I think merits mention is blasting. Blasting, we all know, creates the most dust in a mine and the fact that you can drill ore for a large blast with diamond drills and fire it, say, on Saturday night, and then have all the next day to ventilate the workings, is a great advance in dust control. 1 have wondered if Mr. Corlett, or possibly those at Noranda, can en-vision the use of the diamond drill as a means of advancing cross-cuts and drifts, preparing stopes, etc. I believe it is a matter which is receiving considerable attention at the moment in some parts of the world and J thought it would be interesting to have Mr. Corlett's reaction on that point. MR. A. V. CORLETT: I am not quite so hopeful of using diamond drills as a means of drilling holes in the ordinary drift. Maybe some of the diamond drill men can give us some further information on that point. MR. R. D. LoNGYEAR: The diamond drill manufacturers are working on that problem, but until further work is done we have nothing definite to offer. Drilling holes with a diamond drill to compete with rock drills for advancing drifts and cross-cuts is a desirable objective, because of the elimination of drilling dust and the ability to cut a smooth bore of uniform diameter. To reach this objective, higher rates of penetration are required, which can only be achieved by discovering the optimum bit rotating speed, by reducing vibration, and by further improving the bits and machines. We are optimistic, but the problem is still largely in the research stage.

Location.-The property consists of eight claims (P-12339 to 12343, 12403 to 12405) in Robb township, adjoining Jamieson township on the west. A mocor road extends twenty-two miles northwest from Timmins to the mine. Acknowledgments.- The field work was done in 1940 and 1943, while the writer was employed by the Ontario Department of Mines. The Metals Reserve Company has made available information regarding the property through Messrs. W. R, Dunbar, of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, and W. C. "The property of Consolidated Central Cadillac Mines, Limited, consists of 1,103 acres formerly held by Central Cadillac Mines, Limited, and Wood Cadillac Mines, Limited. Both mines have been partly developed to depths of 565 and 1,000 feet respectively, and from 1939 to 1943 they produced gold, with small amounts of silver and tungsten, having a total value of $2,208,528 from 377,489 tons of ore. The average grade of the ore was $5.85 a ton . Less than 10 per cent of the ore hoisted was discarded by sorting. New development work, carried out since the former Wood property has been purchased by Central Cadillac, has shown that the tonnage indicated by mine workings and diamond drilling exceeds 2,000 tons per vertical foot.The property lies between the claims of Kewagama Gold Mines, Limited, and Pandora Cadillac Gold Mines, Limited, and straddles the Cadillac 'break' for a length of nearly 1 ½ miles. The main workings are 1 3/4 miles east of the well-known O'Brien gold mine.GEOLOGYOutcrops are very scarce, with none at all of the most important horizons, so that the general geology shown in Fig. 1 is deduced mostly from underground workings and diamond drilling. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section through the ore zone.The ore lies within a belt of Blake River volcanics which is approximately 600 feet wide and is flanked on the north and south, respectively, by Cadillac and Kewagama sediments. All the formations have a nearly vertical attitude. The Blake River belt consists essentially of well sheared volcanic tulfs, but associated with these in the northern part are a number of bands of iron formation and the central part, to a width of 100 feet, is occupied by talc schists, making the Cadillac fault proper. Intruding the volcanics south of the Cadillac shear zone are dykes of two types- finegrained aplite or quartz albitite, and porphyry; both consist essentially of albite and quartz and are distinguishable only by the grain size. They have the general east-west trend of the formations they intrude."
