"IntroductionOne of the methods used when applying the Market Approach to the valuation of a mineral exploration property is known as the Joint Venture Terms Method. The method is particularly useful for the valuation of early-stage exploration properties. In 1955, the results of a regional, geological interpretation of the northern portion of New Brunswick were used as a basis for selecting, for intensive exploration, three areas in which structural and stratigraphic conditions were believed to be favourable. Airborne electromagnetic work, in one of these areas, provided the justification for acquiring the Murray group. Even though the initial results were discouraging, this geological interpretation, combined with the fortuitous discovery of cop• per-bearing float, was sufficient reason for carrying out further work using geochemical methods. This work finally resulted in the discovery of the Murray massive-sulphide deposit, after about eighteen months of coordinated exploration on the property. While this deposit is a typical New Brunswick-type base-metal occurrence, extensive leaching has produced a fossil gossan that rendered it an elusive target for exploration techniques of limited penetration Full credit for localizing the target area is given to the geochemical techniques, but geophysical surveys were needed to provide the necessary

Titanium aluminides recently replaced Ni-based superalloys as turbine blades in the last LP stage of aircraft engines. To extend their range of use at higher temperature their properties need to be improved, either by alloying or processing. An efficient solution is to reduce the grain size during the solidification process. In the first part of the paper, an overview is given on the possibilities for grain refinement of such alloys, based on literature data and new results. The most efficient grain refinement is obtained with boron addition which leads to boride formations that are detrimental for in-use properties of turbine blades. In this work, the use of the high grain refinement potency of inoculation with non-brittle particles has been used by developing new refractory-based inoculants. The effect of one of these inoculants on grain refinement of an as-cast structure in a Ti-46Al is presented; resulting in a reduction of the grain size by a factor of 3.While less efficient compared to the potency of boron containing alloys, the grain refinement is effective and does not introduce any embrittling particles.

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. Many sciences and techniques are combined in aerial survey operations. Laboratory studies suggest that improvements of coke strength brought about by pre-heating caking coals before carbonization accrue from inadvertent oxidation rather than from other low-temperature changes in the coal mass. Controlled oxidation of highly caking coal, followed by laboratory carbonization, produces cokes which, in terms of a laboratory scale tumble test index, are equivalent to those obtained from prime metallurgical blends. Appropriately formulated blends of exhaustively oxidized and fresh caking coal similarly yield cokes with strength indices comparable to those of cokes made from the same coal after oxidation under optimum conditions.

THE development of the oil and gas resources of Western Canada is not, as many suppose, a new industry. For more than half a century an intensive search for these valuable products of nature extended from near the western edge of the Precambrian Shield to the Pacific coast, and from the International boundary north to the Arctic circle. The chief centre of interest to the oil prospector has, however, always lain in that region lying east of the first range of the Rocky mountains and confined largely within the boundaries of the Province of Alberta. Although there are many geological problems yet to be worked out in this Province, the oil-well driller has helped in no small way in determining sub-surface conditions and distribution of rock formations. The chief geological conditions as they affect the drilling of wells are generally re-cognized, and for this purpose the Province may be partitioned into three main divisions: first, the disturbed belt or foothills region extending along the eastern edge of the Rocky mountains; second, the Alberta geosyncline, a broad trough lying to the east of and parallel to the disturbed belt and from which the formations rise eastward to level off and form, third, the plains ? ? region, extending over the rest of the Province. A relatively small area in the northeastern part of the Province is underlain with Precambrian rocks and may be excluded from this classification, as it is of no interest to the oil prospector. The foothills, or disturbed belt, has presented the greatest difficulty to drilling, though it has produced the largest yield of oil within the Province to date. Within the foothills belt, the rock formations consist largely of hard shales interspersed with layers of abrasive sandstones, which wear out drilling bits at an alarming rate. The strata, in most flaces, dip steeply and are cut by numerous thrust faults. Although some o the faults have great displacements, their presence may easily be overlooked or the extent of the fault misinterpreted. Many a prospect well has been located on what appeared to be a suitable geological structure only to find, after drilling through a normal succession of rocks for 4,000 feet or more, that the drill had passed through a major fault plane to a younger formation than that in which drilling was started. Only a repetition of formations already drilled could be expected at greater depths.

Before entering into a discussion of wet washing, it will be advisable to consider the various phases and conditions sur- rounding the problem of cleaning coal from the Corbin mines. Corbin is located in the south-east part of British Columbia in the Crowsnest Pass district, about 35 miles north of the International boundary and about three miles west of the Flat-head Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is reached by a rail-way, about thirteen miles long, from McGillivray, B.C., a point on the Crowsnest branch of the Canadian Pacific rail-way, owned and operated by the Eastern British Columbia Railway Company, a subsidiary company of Corbin Coals, Limited. The coal is assumed to occur here, as principally elsewhere in the Rockies, in the Kootenai series of the Lower Cretaceous, but owing to the disturbed condition of the surrounding country and, therefore, the magnitude of the geological study involved, this has never been definitely worked out. The coal is of the usual Crowsnest high-grade steam-coal, containing from 9 to 12 per cent. of ash, but appears to have 4 to 5 per cent. less volatile combustible matter than other coals being mined in this district, a representative analysis being about as follows:

This paper focusses on technological developments which occurred in the village of Deloro, Ontario between 1868 and 1919. These developments illustrate the manner in which improved metallurgical processes linked Ontario mineral resources to industrial expansion. Overview of Deloro The village of Deloro is in Hastings county, about 5 miles from the village of Marmora, the site of the old Marmora iron works and the more recent Marmoraton iron mine. In this area, the Canadian Shield meets the Great Lakes lowlands. The first settlement in the vicinity occurred in the 1820s and was associated with the Marmora iron works. Settlement grew around agriculture. Gold was discovered in Hastings county in 1868. Deloro - the name derives from gold - developed as a concentrated settlement in proximity to several gold mines and the related processing activities. By 1901, substantial smelting works were successfully producing gold and arsenic from local ores. The village was developing as a company town within the framework of benevolent paternalism. For reasons associated with markets and with local ore supplies, the Deloro mills were idle for a period beginning in 1902. Developments in later periods connected Deloro to world events. In 1903, silver was discovered at Cobalt, Ontario. By 1907, M.J. O'Brien, who owned mines at Cobalt, had purchased the Deloro works and was using them to process Cobalt-area ores*.

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. "In the Phosporia formation of SE Idaho, ore quality varies by depth, seam and distance along strike; phosphorus recovery is sensitive to these variations. Plant ore feed can be blended over time to minimize this fluctuation by using a combination of mine production and inventory stockpile scheduling. Mixed-integer and goal programming has been used to optimize short-term mine production, but the seasonal nature of mine haulage requires the use of stockpiles both at the mill and the mine. The contents of the stockpiles can also be optimized as part of the production scheduling problem, but introducing inventory control introduces a nonlinear term into the formulation. A solution using a piecewise linear formulation is modelled and solved using AMPL/Cplex, and solution strategies are discussed for similar large-scale problems. IntroductionIdaho’s minable deposits of phosphate rock are found in the Meade Peak member of the Phosphoria Formation; two separate zones of this formation are mined with a combined thickness of 30 ft to 60 ft. A generalized stratigraphic section of the Phosphoria section is shown in Figure 1, illustrating the degree of complexity encountered when scheduling mine production. Alteration of the formation results in higher grade ore zones near the surface and variable in P2O5 levels between seams and along strike. This variability is seen as well in other quality characteristics critical to the production of acid and elemental phosphorus. Further, plant recovery and nodule quality are sensitive to variations in ore feed; variability in SiO2, carbonates, moisture, organics (carbon), P2O5 and other constituents of the ore can strongly affect plant recovery. Because ore quality characteristics can vary as a function of the alteration zone (or seam) being mined as well as the depth and distance along the strike of the formation, scheduling of mine production can have a highly significant effect on recovery in the plant. As illustrated in Figure 1, there are nine seams containing 20% to 35% P2O5. Phosphoric acid and elemental phosphorus production requires an ore content of 30% and 25% P2O5, respectively. Variability between numerous beds that are mined and quality variation within a seam due to alteration greatly complicates production scheduling with the result that erratic mill feed characteristics greatly decrease recovery."

"Shaft sinking design is typically driven by what has been successful in the past and the availability of sinking plant. This document considers a project where the sinking design and methodology is unconstrained by conventional thinking and removed from the commonly held belief that a sinking methodology should be developed from available winding plant. Schedule was a key driver for the Project and led to an alternative sinking design that aimed to optimise sinking advance rates by specifying new winders that compliment known sinking plant while providing improved safety, redundancy and flexibility within each part of the sinking cycle. KEYWORDS Consistent, Efficient, Flexible, Improved, Innovative, Optimise, Redundancy, Safety, Schedule INTRODUCTION The project is remotely located in the South Gobi region of Mongolia on a brownfield site and the scope of work included the concurrent blind sinking and concrete lining of two (2) ventilation shafts to an approximate depth of 1,150 m at a finished diameter of 10 m and 11 m respectively. All sinking and lining operations to be completed as in-line activities, (no lining whilst other activities are undertaken). The project was schedule driven with a completion date set for the first quarter (calendar) of 2021 and there were no restrictions imposed on the successful Contractor with respect to their equipment selection. Existing sinking plant already onsite from three previous shaft sinking operations would be made available to the Contractor if required on an as is where is basis Sustained advance rates in excess of 2.4 m per day would be required in order to achieve the completion milestone, therefore the design would have to include contingency and demanded flexibility to account for equipment down time. Previous shafts that had been sunk onsite have utilised a single double drum kibble (bucket) winder (hoist) with a single excavator loading on the shaft floor into a large capacity kibble (bucket). DESIGN Mucking The sinking design centred on the mucking cycle given that this is traditionally the most restrictive part of the sinking cycle and typically accounts for one third of the overall sinking cycle. The Vertical Shaft Mucker (VSM) and/or diesel excavator are commonly used plant for shaft sinking that were under consideration. The use of Cactus Grabs was not considered given the higher risk associated with grab ropes and hoist failures."

"Recently, small sized micro-needles for medical are required more frequently by patients. The biggest reason is that it presents great burden on the patients, due to the size of the needle injection. People need to use a very small needle to lower the pain, but the downfall is that it makes them more expensive due to their complicated manufacturing method. Therefore, we need to fabricate a needle by wire-drawing to decrease its price. Tube-drawing is beneficial for its production value; however, in conventional tube-drawing it is difficult of control the wall thickness of the tube and makes it 1mmor lower in diameter. That is why, we propose fluid-mandrel drawing for new tube drawing. This method allows fabrication of a fine tube by using the pressure of the fluid in the tube. In this research, the goal is the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing and its evaluation. Finally, the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing was conducted and in result a tube with a diameter of 0.2mm, high strength and thin wall and fine inner surface was drawn, which can be used as a lesser pain micro-needle.INTRODUCTIONThe main manufacturing method of the current medical needles is roll forming. With this method, it is difficult to make a tube with a diameter lower than 1mm. Deep drawing has been proposed and used as method to further reduce the diameter, but this method is costly and the injection needle obtained by this method is several times more expensive.Therefore, we need to obtain a fine medical needle by drawing process that can be mass-produced and inexpensively manufactured. However, with the conventional drawing process, it is not possible to obtain a syringe needle with a reduced diameter easily, that is why, a fluid-mandrel drawing has been proposed which can reduce the diameter without damaging the inner surface. The methodology of the method is, a fluid is filled in the sealed tube and the pressure inside the tube during drawing is responsible for the good inner surface and wall thickness. It is also expected that the fluid can be easily discarded and that the tube can be manufactured on a long scale."

A7075 aluminum alloys have high strengths but poor corrosion resistance. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, a clad sheet is suggested, that is the A7075 alloy sheet bonded to A1XXX or A6XXX aluminum alloy sheets which are surface layers with good corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties of the clad sheets are determined by the combination of the component layer sheets, and thermomechanical treatment should be precisely designed when the strengthening methods of the core and the surface alloys are quite different. In the present study, three-layered A6022/A7075/A6022 clad sheets were fabricated by roll bonding process. Simplified processes incorporating a twin roll casting were also suggested in order to reduce the processing cost. Several temper methods composed of rolling, annealing, solution treatment, and aging were suggested in order to optimize the mechanical properties of the sheets. The strengths of the clad sheets were compared with the bare A7075 and bare A6022 sheets.

It is well known that in situ stress measurements at a given site will generally display significant variability. However, it appears that a robust analysis of such measurements – i.e., one that is faithful to the tensorial nature of the data – is not available. Despite the fact that stress is a tensor, stress magnitude and orientation have long been analyzed separately using classical statistics. In earlier work we demonstrated the applicability of tensor statistics to the analysis of stress variability. Here, we investigate further the difference between tensor and classical statistics with respect to the stress tensor correlation matrix. Our analysis commences with the selection of a series of valid correlation matrices. Then, assuming that standardized tensor components follow the multivariate standard normal distribution, these correlation matrices are used to generate marginal probability distributions of the eigen-parameters (i.e., principal stress magnitude and rotation angle). From these, random stress tensors are generated, their eigenparameters determined, and the probability density distributions of these obtained using both classical and tensor statistics. Our results indicate that, for all correlation matrices, both methods give practically identical distributions for principal stress magnitude. However, the discrepancy between the two methods with regard to probability density distribution of rotation angle is highly dependent on stress component correlation. This discrepancy is usefully quantified in terms of the integral, with respect to orientation, of the difference between the two probability density distributions. This parameter, which we term Area Difference, is closely linked to the magnitude of the correlation matrix determinant, which itself is related to the normal stress correlation coefficient (i.e., ?x ,?y ??). Assuming that Area Difference should not exceed 0.1, we identify the critical determinant for any particular value of normal stress component correlation coefficient. Thus, using published in situ stress data and the obtained critical determinants, we show that for a specific normal stress component coefficient, when the correlation matrix determinant is less than its critical determinant, the more precise tensor statistics should be used to calculate the distribution of rotation angle. These results demonstrate that the customary analysis of stress measurement data may lead to erroneous results, and that tensor statistics appears to be preferred approach.

"IntroductionMine drainage, surface. drainage and process liquors are the principal mine and mill effluents. The quantity and quality of these flows varies according to mineralogy, type and scale of mining, the process, tailing disposal, local ground conditions and climate.Typical contaminants remaining after solids sedimentation are colloidal or semi-colloidal particles, acids, alkalis, metals in solution, cyanides and thiosalts. Environmental regulations and guidelines have been issued in detail by the appropriate government agencies and will not be reviewed here. Revisions and additions are being made as our comprehension and abilities increase. Some contaminants of consequence have not been specifically regulated as practical treatment technology has not been identified. Thiosalts fall into that category as do the derivatives of the first stage of cyanide oxidation - cyanates.Most mining activities have present or foreseeable water treatment requirements. Because process economics can be adversely skewed by the environmental factor, the acknowledged objective of every operation must be to identify and anticipate those requirements.The evaluation and selection of water treatment techniques for mine-mill applications is complicated by the fact that most mine-mill effluents are high volume, dilute and chemically complex systems. Treatment processes applicable to most contaminants are: chemical or biological oxidation; neutralization and/or precipitation; liquid/solids separation. Other processes such as ion exchange, electro-deposition, foam fractionation, freeze crystallization and reverse osmosis offer the possibility of selective removal or concentration of contaminents. The latter tediniques, representing a slightly higher level of technology, are less suited to the large, low value flows usually encountered in the mine environment."

While new jobs and taxes are major incentives for support of mining, stakeholders must also be assured that current jobs, resources and environment will be protected. Mining companies can help achieve stakeholder support by frankly addressing Acid Rock Drainage CARD) issues. To prevent ARD, miners must begin early in the mine life-cycle to develop an ARD management plan and integrate it into the mining operation. As this proactive preventative program is initiated, mining companies also need to engage and collaborate with stakeholders to insure that their expectations and needs are met. Stakeholder engagement is enhanced as mining companies emphasizes the value of clean and available water for current and future generations.

This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite ore by a pressure acid leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project. The Ambatovy orebody is located in Madagascar. The mini pilot plant testwork was carried out in the Dynatec metallurgical laboratory in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The results of the testwork were very encouraging, including nickel and cobalt extractions in the range of 95.5% to 97.0%, and 94.0% to 97.0%, respectively, in the ore leach step with sulphuric acid. High recoveries of nickel and cobalt were achieved throughout the remaining process steps, yielding separate nickel and cobalt metal powders with better than acceptable purity.
