Mineral scale formation is prevalent in numerous mining operations. Such scale formation can occur in the direct-contact heat exchangers ahead of an autoclave. In these heat exchangers, the incoming slurry comes into contact with steam in a stage-wise fashion, which is re-circulated from the downstream flash vessels to heat the slurry in stages ahead of the autoclave. Calcium sulfate scaling causes severe problems in mining operations where increased temperatures are involved due to rising temperatures promoting calcium sulfate scaling through a decreasing solubility. In a number of these operations, the scale formation can occur in the presence of mineral solids, where fine-grained charged particles are at concentrations in excess of 35%. Scale prevention is not difficult in standard aqueous systems; however, the presence of solids leads to significant deficiencies in the prevention of scale due to the adsorption of the polymer onto the charge solids instead of the polymer interaction with the scale. Therefore, a technical solution to prevent mineral scale build up occurring in presence of pulp slurry in mining operations is needed. Several novel antiscalant technologies were developed and evaluated which provided a substantial improvement in the scale prevention in such systems.

The São Bento concentrator was built by Gencor in 1985 to treat refractory gold-bearing flotation concentrate. The plant was the first commercial application of pressure oxidation for refractory gold ore following about a year after the first use of pressure oxidation on a whole ore at Homestake's McLaughlin operation in California. Ore from the Sao Bento mine is remarkably consistent in gold grade and arsenic and sulphide concentration as is typical in banded iron formations (BIF) (l). Gold content is approximately 9 g/t with approximately 30 - 40% free milling. The balance is associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. An expansion of both process facility and mine was undertaken between 1996 and 1998, raising the treatment capacity from 32,000 t/mo to 45,000 t/mo.

The mineral industry in India is an important contributor to the country?s GDP and foreign trade, and also a significant source of employment generation. The industry is distributed almost all across the country and has operations in some of the remotest areas, where it has also served as a sole source of infrastructure development. India produces 89 minerals, out of which four are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals. The mining leases are occupying about 0.21% of the total land mass of the country. Indian mining industry is characterized by a large number of small operational mines (approx 3000 mines). Appropriate systems have been put in place to ensure sustainable growth of the sector, which include formulation of procedures for scientific prospecting and mining and development of a mechanism of prior environmental and forest clearances for mining projects. Main emphasis is to protect the health and safety of mine workers, as well as to safeguard the interests of indigenous people through rehabilitation and resettlement packages. Efforts are under way to mainstream the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in order to promote equity in the mining industry. The issue of scientific closure and reclamation of the abandoned mine sites poses a major challenge. Present paper illustrated several initiatives have been taken in this direction along with case studies, which could be replicated in other parts of the country.

During the summer of 1994, a new PID-based control strategy was installed on line B of the grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. Part I of this paper described the methodology used to select the appropriate control strategy using a phenomenological dynamic simulator. Part II presents the implementation of the control strategy. Prior to the controller installation, it was necessary to solve various problems related to the process, such as a cyclic behaviour of the rod mill feed tonnage, a problem related to the mill water source and the calibration of the flowmeters. Once these problems were solved, the control strategy was accomplished in two steps. Step 1 corresponds to the installation of control loops to regulate the pump box level and the cyclone overflow density. Step 2 describes the implementation of a loop to control the cyclone feed density. According to Part I, a loop to control the circulating load is also part of the original design. However, reasons are given to explain the rejection of this loop. For both steps, technical procedures such as filtering, process identification and controller tuning are detailed. Finally, the operator’s interface is briefly described.

The technical feasibility of ammonia leaching of PGM bearing Platreef flotation concentrates was investigated as an alternative method for the recovery of base metals prior to precious metal recovery. The composition of the concentrates includes 2.02% Cu and 3.17% Ni, and the major base metal minerals are chalcopyrite and pentlandite. Optimal leaching conditions were initially established in shake flask experiments to be a solution containing 4 M NH4OH, 4 M (NH4)2CO3 and a pH range between 9 and 10. These were used as base case conditions in column and batch stirred tank reactor tests, where the effects of total ammonia concentration and operating temperature were explored further. At optimal conditions nearly 100% Cu and Ni extraction were obtained in the batch stirred tank reactor, and 95% Cu and 60% Ni extraction was obtained in columns. The activation energy for chalcopyrite and pentlandite was 36 kJ/mol and 16 kJ/mol, respectively, in both reactors, indicating different reaction pathways for the two minerals. Gas-liquid mass transfer appears to be the limiting reaction step in columns much more than in tanks, and the degree of ammonia loss to air is significant. This initial test work indicates the feasibility of using ammonia leaching for this and similar materials as an alternative route to conventional smelting and refining prior to PGM recovery, but a number of technical challenges still need to be overcome.

Synopsis The colour changes effected in a solution of dithizone by trace amounts of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization provide a sensitive field test for these metals. The method has been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to trace zinc orebodies under residual soils. The dithizone test is used here on samples of non-residual soil overlying a gold-bearing zone in which the gold is associated with disseminated sphalerite, galena, and chalco-pyrite. A gold-bearing zone was successfully traced under overburden ranging from a few inches to five feet in depth by means of this method. The method may prove useful in guiding preliminary trenching through light overburden, by outlining the extent of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization. Introduction The dithizone test affords a rapid, simple, and delicate test for the presence of zinc in soil and water and is suitable for use under field conditions. It has recently been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to outline a zinc-rich area in the residual soil over a primary zinc deposit in Tennessee. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether the method could be used to trace a gold-bearing zone, containing associated zinc mineralization, under shallow, non-residual, glacial overburden. The results obtained indicate that the method can be used to guide preliminary trenching in overburden up to six feet in depth. Tests made of the water near lake-shore outcrops also indicate that favourable prospecting zones may be located from the water, within five feet of the shore. It is felt that this simple field test should find a wider use in prospecting, because, under certain conditions, it can outline favourable zones and thereby reduce the amount of blind trenching necessary. The following pages describe the type of deposit tested, the method used, the .results obtained, and the difficulties encountered by a novice in the use of this chemical procedure. "IntroductionThe Highland Valley Copper partnership was formed in July 1986 as a logical result of a mine with a large ore reserve but a small mill, and a mine with a large, modern mill but dwindling ore reserves. The original partnership of Cominco and Rio Algom was expanded in January 1988 to include Highmont Mining Company. During 1988/89 the Highmont mill was moved 7.5 km to adjoin the Lornex mill, becoming the Highland mill in the process, with a nominal capacity of 130 000 tonnes per day.The mine is located near the town of Logan Lake, 220 km northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia and 55 km southwest of Kamloops. The map in Figure 1 shows the general area. Kamloops is a major service centre and is served by two railways, two major roads and a regional airport. The mine site is situated between 1200 m and 1600 m above sea level on the Thompson Plateau. Principle activities in the area, in addition to mining, are cattle ranching and forestry. Ore reserves at the beginning of 1996 totaled 533 million tonnes at a grade of 0.42% copper and 0.008% molybdenum. Ore is mined from two pits — Valley, 3 km northwest of the mill; and Lornex, 1 km southwest of the mill. With 78% of the reserves, the Valley pit is the focus of activity.In order for Highland Valley Copper to remain competitive with a very low grade ore reserve, it has been necessary throughout the mine’s life for new technologies to be embraced as they become available. These have included such diverse technologies as in-pit crushing and conveying, large mechanical drive trucks, computerized truck dispatch and oneman survey instruments. During the next few years, it is planned to introduce two further technologies that are relatively new to both the world at large and the mining industry in particular. These are namely Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), both of which are expected to have a major impact on the way mining is carried out in the years to come."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to discuss briefly the main logging and testing devices presently at our disposal, to point out some of their limitations, and to suggest possible improvements of the techniques.Some of the more important devices .are those that are used in:(1) Coring(2) Formation testing(3) Electric well logging(4) Radioactive well logging(5) Measuring of bottom hole pressures(6) Sampling of reservoir fluidsThe first four of these procedures are concerned with the well while it is in the process of drilling. The last two are carried out as soon as possible after a well has been brought into production and .at intervals during its life. My remarks will be concerned mostly with certain aspects of formation testing. The reservoir engineer is dependent on the information derived from these operations in order to obtain a clear picture of the conditions in a reservoir and to enable him to assess and forecast its future behaviour.Since any calculation is no better than the data on which it is based, not enough emphasis can be placed on the necessity for the testing and logging equipment to be of the highest quality and for the analysis of the results obtained to be thorough."

Cold gas dynamic spray is an innovative technology allowing the deposition of thin metallic layers on a bulk or sheet substrate. Titanium on aluminum deposition is very attractive to the aeronautic industry, due to the enhanced corrosion resistance and wear properties of titanium coating as well as its improved compatibility with CFRP, preserving the reduced cost of aluminum substrate. One main drawback, however, is related to the micro-porosity of the deposed layer, negatively affecting the corrosion barrier performance. In this paper, the effect of selective laser post-treatment on pure grade 2 titanium coatings on AA2020-T3 sheets was experimentally and numerically investigated. Morphological features, microstructure and chemical composition of the treated zone were assessed by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Microhardness measurements were also carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the treated coating. A numerical model of the laser treatment, based on a finite volume scheme, was implemented and solved to simulate the process and discuss the experimental outcomes. Obtained results highlighted the key role played by heat input and dimensional features on the effectiveness of the treatment.

"HistoricalBARYTES was mined in Nova Scotia as early as 1874 from a deposit at Five Islands, on the north shore of Minas Basin. The first record of the presence of the mineral at the Walton site appears in a report by Selwyn in l893, who states: ""Barytes in considerable quantity occurs in veins in lime-stones at Walton and Pembroke"". The exact site of the present workings was marked •on a map published by Fletcher in 1905.The economic •possibilities of this deposit, however, were not recognized until 1940, at which time we were at war with Germany, who up to that time had supplied 50 per cent of the world's requirements.At that time the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, recognizing the need for certain strategic minerals, induced Canadian Industrial Minerals, Limited, to send prospectors into 'the area to look for manganese. No manganese deposits were found, but a deposit of barytes was directed to their attention, and exploration and development work on the occurrence was proceeded with.IntroductionThe south shore of Minas Basin between the Avon river at Windsor and the Stewiacke river at Maitland has long been known as a potential source of mineral wealth. It had attracted the attention of mineralogists and in the past had produced considerable tonnages of manganese ore and gypsum. Depletion of ore in surface and near surface deposits resulted in a dwindling production, until today only deposits of gypsum are worked."

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). Some industrially relevant applications for pyrite nano/micro-particles have been proposed in the literature, such as the catalysis of chalcopyrite leaching, the removal of As(III), As(V) and Cr(VI) from solution, as photovoltaic devices, and others. Even though pyrite can be recovered from solution by flotation, for some applications it may be beneficial to provide pyrite with magnetic properties. In this work, a methodology to synthesize magnetic shell/core composites made of pyrite as the shell and either natural or synthetic magnetite as the core is presented. The size of the magnetic composite may range from tenths to hundreds of microns. The synthesis is basically made by stoichiometrically mixing iron nano/micro-particles with sulfur microparticles with magnetite particles, and bringing the mixture in an oxygen free atmosphere from 200 to 300 °C for 4 h. The composites were characterized by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction.

The mine is entered by a central vertical shaft, strongly timbered, and containing two compartments-one for the passenger cage, the other for the large skips bringing the ore to the surface. A man-way, for emergencies, is also provided, parallel to the shaft. The cage is a single-deck steel box, carrying about thirty persons; by means of arrangements above and below, it can also hoist and lower materials needed in the workings. Levels are run at intervals of 100 feet. In special cases, where the ore conditions warrant, sub-levels are operated, such as those at 1,113 feet and 1,123 feet (Fig. 7), which are connected by winzes with the 11 th level. One of these was pushed for 40 feet, and then abandoned because it was unprofitable to take up ore of the grade encountered. The ore between levels is removed by stoping. The drifts follow the course of the veins as much as possible, with numerous cross-cuts. Winzes, raises, connections, etc., are blasted out where needed. The main drifts are at least 8 ft. high by about 9 ft. wide. All former narrow drifts had to be widened sorne time ago, by ruling of the Ontario Department of Mines, to lessen the danger of accidents with cars in the small passages. Accurate plans of the under-ground workings are kept in the office, and extensive surveying is always being done underground to keep the maps up to date, measure the cubical contents of stopes, and so forth. Timber is extensively used in the construction of supports and chutes, and in the sinking of the shaft. Steel and concrete are too expensive to compete with timber, which 1s abundant in such sections as have escaped forest tires.

The Granby ores may be divided into three groups or classes. The No. I ore is a heavy pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sulphide carrying some free silica, and calcite. No. 2 ore carries the same general group of sulphides as does No. 1, but in a lesser amount. The gangue is an altered greenstone. No. 3 ore has a smaller amount of sulphides than either of the others. Analyses of these ores is as follows: Cu. Si02 Fe. CaO S. Al 203 MgO No. I. Drill cores show a certain dissemination of sulphides in portions of the rock, so that grinding to 5 per cent. + 65 mesh with 65 per cent.-200 mesh liberates the sulphide minerals very completely. The association of the sulphides is fundamental. The pyrite was probably deposited first and was followed by a portion of the chalcopyrite, or these two portions of the sulphide minerals were deposited together.

"THE TOPIC on which I am speaking this afternoon is ""The Future of the Canadian Oil Industry.'' At the time of C + 100, we should take a searching look at ourselves, an honest appraisal of our achievements and a forthright accounting of our shortcomings as well as the uniquely Canadian aspects of this industry. I would like to put before you some of my views on the direction we are taking in the exploration field and in the production field. I would also like to speak briefly on some of our problems and the role of the various segments of our industry in solving these problems.First of all, let us look at the exploration picture. We are in the midst of an exploration boom. There were 133 seismic crews active in Western Canada this winter, the highest since 1957, land prices are appreciating rapidly, Canadian oil reserves increased + 16 per cent during 1966, there is a great demand for technical personnel of every kind and the whole industry, except the drilling segment, seems to be prospering. This surge of activity has its roots in two major occurrences. The first of these was the change in the pro-ration system in Alberta, the major producing province, accompanied by the change in spacing pat-terns. The proration change was designed primarily to encourage in-creased exploration and it has certainly had this effect. It has also had the unforeseen effect of put-ting everyone into what we, in the oil business, call ""elephant hunting."" In other words, the days of the development of barely economic, marginal fields are over. Oil companies today are only interested in high-reserve, high-productivity, high-quality reservoirs."

Introduction The development of the method for recovering zinc from lead blast-furnace slags at Trail is interesting and important in the history of both lead and zinc metallurgy. Many efforts have been made in the past, particularly in Germany, to make economic recovery of zinc from slag. The Pape process on Oker slags was successful and is being worked at the present time. More recently the Waelz process has come to the fore. One effort at Cockle Creek, Australia is of special interest in view of subsequent developments. This was re-ported in detail by Guy Courtney in 1920(1). It deserves mention as it shows how, as in many other instances in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, important pioneering work has been done in Australia. These experiments, started over 25 years ago, comprised reduction with coke, powdered coal, and eletrothermically in carbon-lined furnaces. The so-called slag eye furnace, which volatilised the metals from a blast furnace running with a hot top, was also investigated.

The platinum group metal (PGM) industry is currently reliant on the crush-mill-float-smelt-refine route to process PGM ores. However, there are many instances where this route would not be feasible. An alternative process route has been developed which involves heap bioleaching to extract base metals followed by heap reclamation and a water wash step, leading into heap cyanide leaching to extract precious metals. This process was evaluated through test work on samples of Platreef ore using laboratory scale columns. After 304 days 75% Ni and 93% Cu were extracted in the bioleach experiment at 65°C, and after 60 days 58% Pt, 99% Pd and 90% Au in the follow-up cyanide leach experiment at 50°C. A preliminary process flow sheet has been developed around this. Analysis via a mineral liberation analyser showed that the remaining Pt was in the form of the mineral sperrylite, which appeared to be slow leaching in cyanide in comparison to the other mineral types. Analysis of cyanide effluent solution showed high levels of thiocyanate, which present an environmental risk for disposal and high consumption of cyanide. Further studies to develop the process for commercial application in the South African PGM industry are outlined.

"With increasing data volume, due to enhancing requirements for ground investigation programs for large construction projects, the demand for more efficient filing systems is more and more growing. Depending on the project we also have to use flexible systems to cope with varying data out of different lab and field tests.The chair for Engineering Geology at TUM is developing a web-based database solution to handle all project relevant data in a more appropriate way. We aim to optimize our data management to achieve a fast and easy way of collecting, documenting and analyzing our gained data. The second objective is to provide an easy access to our data for project partners across broadly distributed locations.This Database system consists of a PHP web interface and a MySQL database core. The current setup allows an online access via Internet (www). We are able to grant and constrain access to all data or only arrays of data with our user management system to guarantee the safety of project data and respect all rights and proprietorship. The database system is of modular design and consists of the following three base modules: module of general project data, module of laboratory data and user management module. At the current stage we are able to save and work with all usually generated specific values from unconfined compressive strength tests, brazilian tensile strength tests, point load tests, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity tests and ultrasonic tests. The user is able to perform a simple statistical analysis within our database (e.g. average calculation of one sample) and export data as csv or xls files for further analysis.For specific questions within projects we are able to deploy and integrate further modules in our database system. At this moment, we are developing an add on to use this database for different drill test analyses. One of the tools correlates drilling performance and drill head wear measured in the field with rock mechanical properties, and extrapolates the data to estimate the performance and wear in new projects. Today we are managing 90 projects with 550 samples and almost 1350 lab tests with the base module.In our contribution we aim to demonstrate an efficient way of data structuring using a relational database for laboratory and field testing data."
