"AbstractThe experiments described show that crude bismuth metal containing up to 5 per •cent lead, 0.14 per cent silver, 0.015 per cent copper, 0.02 per cent iron, .and small amounts of antimony, nickel, and tin may be refined to a bismuth content of 99.98 per cent by distillation followed by chlorination. It also is shown that bismuth trichloride of high ,purity may be produced by passing chlorine over hot •crude bismuth metal and allowing the resulting vapours to •condense in a cooler .part of the system.IntroductionBISMUTH is used in the production of alloys and pharmaceuticals. During 1952, the New York price for the refined metal was $2.25 per pound in ton lots.Some months-ago a Canadian producer requested the Mines Branch to investigate methods of refining the bismuth which they had been producing. Their crude product had been selling for $1.50 to $1.70 per pound and it was desired to increase its purity to at least 99.98 per cent so that it could be sold for $2.25 per pound."

Introduction A brief account of the East Malartic fire is essential if this paper is to serve the purpose implied by its title. The fire originated in the timbers of No. 4 shaft at the 10th, or 1,570-foot, level; this was the top or collar of the underground sinking operations. At the time, sinking was in progress and the shaft bottom was 242 feet below the 12th station horizon, or 618 feet 'below the l0th level. Above the l0th level, the shaft was not in use as the surface plant was not yet completed. The shaft crews descended from surface in No. 3 vertical shaft to the l0th level, where they transferred to No. 4 shaft, a distance of 1,450 feet. Of the sixteen shaftmen mucking at the shaft bottom, four were able to reach safety. One shaftman was overcome by fumes midway between the two shafts on the l0th level, while attempting his escape. The remaining eleven men climbed as far as the 11th station and there succumbed to carbon monoxide. No. 4 shaft, inclined at 61 degrees, bad been raised and timbered from the 10th level to surface; this bad been followed by sinking operations below the l0th. Two air hoists had been set up in the footwall of the shaft, 110 feet above the 10th level, and directly behind compartments No. 2 and No. 4. The waste from the shaft bottom was hoisted in 28-cubicfoot buckets on mono rails and dumped over standard shaft sinking doors into waste chutes built into No. 1 and No. 3 compartments. The five-compartment shaft, 7 ft. 8 in. by 34 ft. 6 in. overall size, was heavily timbered. In addition to the standard shaft timbers of 8 in. by 8 in. and 8 in. by 10 in. B.C. fir, the hanging-wall and ends of the shaft were laced with 4-inch spruce lagging. This represented approximately 300 board feet of timber in placee for every foot of shaft. The cause of the fire bas never been determined, despite every effort to do so. The inquest held for those who lost their lives in the fire was an extremely thorough one, but only the location of the origin, and not the cause, was established.

A brief description is given of the process used by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited to recover cobalt metal from nickel-cobalt sulphides. A description of the equipment with the operating conditions is presented with an evaluation of the corrosion test results for various stainless steels and other acid resistant materials for the part of the process involving the sulphuric acid leaching of nickel-cobalt sulphide slurry under air pressure. SINCE 1954 the Sherritt Gordon ammonia leach process has been used at Fort Saskatchewan to recover nickel metal, copper sulphides and cobalt-nickel sulphides from nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. 'To develop a process for recovering cobalt and nickel from the cobalt-nickel sulphides, studies were carried out in the Sherritt Gordon laboratory and pilot plant and, late in 1957, continuous acid leaching of sulphides was started in the refinery. "Pyroclastic rocks are useful guides to volcanic centers due to the tendency of their fragments to increase in size and volume toward the source vent. The felsic rocks of these centers can be the prime hosts of base metal deposits in the Precambrian Shield; their sub-volcanic equivalents are often the focus of porphyry copper mineralization in the Cordillera. Quantitative mapping of pyroclastic rocks has not yet developed into a routine prospecting tool in Canada, however, possibly due to the cumbersome nature of existing manual techniques and their limitation to structurally simple terrains.A rapid pyroclastic mapping method has been developed whereby the field geologist acquires only a down-plunge outcrop photograph, a record of the fragmental deformation ellipsoid and a record of some descriptive features from each station. Mean fragment size and volume percent are obtained later in the laboratory from a photo-enlargement: by means of a digital analyzer. A computer program uses the strain parameters to 'undeform' the field measurements and obtains genetic information from the descriptive data. Results can be superimposed on a geologic map, with values for each station being represented by a dot of a specified diameter corresponding to the size or volume percentile range to which the value belongs.Control traverses were run over the pyroclastic rocks surrounding the Anderson Lake mine and the Flin Flon South main shaft in northern Manitoba. In both locations, the mapping has delineated regular increasing trends in mean size and volume per cent toward the head frame."

THE operating advantages of the longwall retreating system of mining, as opposed to longwall advancing, have been well known for many years. Although retreat walls have been successfully worked in the past in some of the collieries of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, Picton and Cumberland areas, the adoption of longwaIl retreating as the general sys-tem of mining has not been attractive in the Sydney field, due to the time and expenditures required to drive roadways to the boundary. In addition. difficulties in maintaining effective ventilation on the faces, especially under conditions of low barometer, have made the operators in the field hesitant to adopt this as the general system of mining. The development of a machine capable of rapid entry drivage has made possible the driving of the necessary road ways to the boundary at a moderate cost, completely changing the picture and making a retreat system more attractive.

"One of the most common hydrometallurgical methods for precious metal extraction is cyanidation. The effluents of this process may contain relatively high concentrations of copper, zinc and iron, which react with free cyanide to form complexes, adversely affecting the efficiency and the economy of the process.This preliminary work studies the use of the solvent extraction technique to remove copper, zinc and iron cyanide complexes from a synthetic solution similar to that of gold mill effluents, in order to allow the recycling of the solution back to the process. For the extraction of these anions (Cu(CN)2 -, Cu(CN)3 2-, Cu(CN)4 3-, Zn(CN)4 2- and Fe(CN)6 3-), trioctyl methyl ammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) was studied as extractant, using nonylphenol as modifier in the organic phase (iso-octane). The experimental results showed that for a synthetic solution containing 450 mg/L total cyanide, 160 mg/L copper, 50 mg/L zinc and 51 mg/L iron, it is possible to extract the 96% of copper, 91% of zinc and 75% of iron when using 0.011 mol/L of Aliquat 336 (organic/aqueous volume ratio (O/A) =1) in the pH range of 9-10."

Abstract In a review of the application of electrical logging in Canada, examples are .given of long and short distance correlations by means of the electrical logs. The use of MicroLogging for the determination of permeable and porous formations is explained. The question of log analysis for the quantitative determination of fluid saturation and porosity is .discussed. An example is provided to illustrate the significance of the resistivity gradient. The advantages of the new method of the Laterolog are shown, chiefly for the case of wells filled with high-salinity mud. Introduction Electrical logging techniques developed rapidly in Canada at the time an intensive drilling activity started for the exploitation of the Devonian series in Alberta, namely, at the beginning of 1947. The conventional service was soon thereafter supplemented with the latest technica1 improvements. Canada has been among the first regions to take advantage of MicroLogging*, which has proved a most powerful .tool for the investigation of permeable and porous formations; also, the more recent development known as the Laterolog has ?been introduced in Canada. The Laterolog provides a better determination of .the formations, particularly in the case of salty mud where the conventional logging is greatly handicapped. The various methods of electrical logging are now commonly known in oil industry and have been described in numerous publications ( 1) ( 2) (3).

ABSTRACT A revised stratigraphic section of Carboniferous rocks which occupy about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland is presented. Gypsum, which outcrops at thirty-five different localities, is found to belong to four principal zones in the section. The newly mapped structure of the region makes the otherwise random occurrences of gypsum appear as systematic outcroppings of the four zones which follow the regional structure. Details of several occurrences are given and those most advantageous for exploitation are pointed out. INTRODUCTION ROCKS of Carboniferous age occupy an area of about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland. They occur in a belt, from 5 to 15 miles wide, which extends from the head of St. Georges bay southwestward for 65 miles to the mouth of Little Codroy river (see Figure 1). Several hundred feet of Pennsylvanian rocks overlie rocks of Mississippian age, which are at least 12,000 feet thick. The rocks of the Carboniferous section of Newfoundland are very similar to those of Nova Scotia and represent a northeastward continuation of the same palaeophysiographic conditions. Mississippian measures of Windsor equivalence include thick gypsum deposits which outcrop at many places and which extend under large areas as indicated by sink-holes and by structural considerations.

THE term "high pressure", as used in industry today, is applied rather loosely. Generally, it refers to pressures that are higher than those encountered in most industrial processes although no definite limits are normally stated. For the purpose of this talk I should like to set rather arbitrary limits to the term "high pressure", and in ab-solute figures this would be the range from 1000 psi to perhaps 40,000 or 50,000 p.s.i. The scope of high pressure technology is very broad, and it would take more time than we have avail-able here today to cover fully even one aspect of the field. Therefore, I should like to discuss just some of the techniques used and problems en-countered in high pressure operations. Research work into the high pressure region dates back about 150 years, but it was not until 1910 that the first commercial application of high pressure technology was made in the production of ammonia.

Introduction The principal primary iron and steel producing capacity of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation is at the Dominion Iron and Steel, Limited, plant at Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The main raw materials are Cape Breton coal, Wabana (Newfoundland) iron ore, and Port-au-Port (Newfoundland) limestone. This plant, which was established at the turn of the century has gradually expanded its production facilities so that today its ingot producing capacity is over 720,000 tons annually. Principal operating units of the plant at present are three batteries of 173 Koppers by-product coke ovens with conventional by-product recovery equipment, three blast furnaces .of 15 ft. 6 in., 18 ft. 3 in., and 19 ft. 3 in. hearth diameter (inside the brick), one 700-ton hot metal mixer, ten open hearth furnaces (two of 175-ton capacity, three 12 5-ton, five 60-ton), one 10-ton electric furnace, a 40-inch blooming mill, a billet mill, a rail mill, a tie plate mill, rod and bar mills, and a wire and nail mill. Extensive machine shops and an iron and brass foundry are also available for plant maintenance and repairs. This paper will describe developments during the past five years and those now in process. It will also briefly discuss research being done and indicate the direction of future development.

In Canada, although some research on extraction metallurgy is carried out by the universities and by government, the primary responsibility for the research necessary to the mining industry rests on the industry it-self. Automation is coming more slowly to the mining industry than to others, partly because of the problems of instrumentation. Operations research methods are, however, coming into use. Some new developments in the extraction of aluminum, in iron and steel, in pyrometallurgy and in pressure leaching of nickel, copper, zinc and lead are briefly outlined. Mention is made of uranium and the reactive metals. The importance of the by-product metals, notably antimony, bismuth, gallium, germanium, indium and tellurium, in the development of the electronics industry is also mentioned. The trend toward co-operative research by groups of producers, to develop markets for their products, is noted. In conclusion, there are a greater number of trained scientists, as well as larger amounts of scientific knowledge, available to the mineral industry than ever before, and, if properly used, this will result in great benefits to the industry and to Canada.

"IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the Lynn Lake nickel area of northern Manitoba. The geology of the area will not be discussed in great detail, nor will the mining op; rations presently being conducted. Both subjects will be treated briefly and, in addition, mention will be made of some of the problems encountered in mapping in the area. some of the questions which still remain unanswered, methods of prospecting that have been applied and the future possibilities of the area.For present purposes, the Lynn Lake area will be considered as extending from west of Lynn lake to east of Barrington lake. Thus, more correctly, it should be termed the Lynn Lake-Barrington Lake area. It comprises five 15-minute map-areas, or a total of 800 square miles, in a block 47 miles east-west and 17 miles north-south.Lynn lake itself is about 120 miles north of Sherridon, Manitoba, the closes t rail terminal. The area is part of the Granville Lake sheet which was mapped by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1932, 1933, and 1935, the results being published in Summary Report 1933. Part C, and as Maps 343A and 344A on a scale of four miles to o.ne inch. In 1940, the McVeigh Lake area was mapped by the Geological Survey of Canada on a scale of 1,500 feet to 1 inch and a map was issued in 1945."

The development of the Granduc mine presents a number of problems which are peculiar to its location and surrounding terrain. Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art. Mining operations, especially surface coal mines, have great impacts on the local ecosystem and the environment. However, it has been a common practice in mine design that the economic evaluation considers only the operating and capital costs, while the costs incurred due to ecological damage are left out. Such practice underestimates the total cost of mining and ignores the difference in ecological impacts between different mine design alternatives. With growing interest in sustainable development, the mining industry is under increasing pressure to operate not only based on economic and engineering principles but also on principles of sustainability. Therefore, estimating ecological costs of mining and considering such costs in the mine design process is an important step towards reducing ecological impacts at the design stage. The objective of this paper is to quantify the ecological costs of open pit coal mining and to demonstrate the influence of such costs on the ultimate pit design. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from energy consumption. Four major components of ecological cost are identified, namely, lost value of direct eco-services, lost value of indirect eco-services, prevention and restoration costs, and the cost of carbon emission from energy consumption. Necessary equations are given for estimating these costs. An algorithm is described for ultimate pit optimization in coal deposits with near-horizontal coal seams. A case study is presented in which the ultimate pits with and without ecological costs are optimized and compared to show the influence of ecological costs on the pit design outcome.

"Investigation and 3D analysis of Heap no. 2 of Meydook copper complex was the subject of this study. In this project all geological and geotechnical investigations conducted in the mine were evaluated aiming at determination of Heap no. 2 design parameters. The main objective of the project was to evaluate the potential for construction of Heap. No. 2 on a waste dump built in a valley in the north side of the pit.Considering the space limitation for dump location this was a viable alternative to reduce the costs associated with heap no. 2 construction. Moreover, it allowed for a significant reduction in overall mining costs. Considering the project condition, a 3D analysis of heap major structures including; valley rock foundation, waste dump, and low grade ore was carried out. Five sets of analyses were conducted and the displacement and stress fields were calculated within the heap no. 2 components. In all analyses conducted the subsident profile was determined for the valley base rock and heap foundation (waste dump). Moreover, the shear interaction between heap and waste dump was evaluated at the heap interface. The analyses results showed that the maximum settlement at the heap base is about 4-5 cm and the waste dump provides a safe and reliable base for heap construction. Moreover, the analysis results showed that the selected %5 grade for the heap interface is good and does not pose any risk in terms of heap Interface shear displacements. A sensitivity analysis of heap mechanical parameters was also conducted. The obtained results show that if the friction angle of heap material is reduced below 25 degree due to acid spraying process, the heap walls become unstable and the heap geometry must be redesigned."

INTRODUCTION THOSE concerned with coal mining operations in Alberta have been asked repeatedly the same question, "Why is mechanization in Alberta proceeding so slowly as to lag far behind the mines in the United States?" This question is often asked in such a manner as to indicate that a severe reprimand is overdue to the mining engineers of this Province for their apparent indifference to the problem of improving their mining operations by increased mechanization. To the average person, unacquainted with mining conditions and problems, mechanization appears to be simply a matter of introducing equipment to load coal underground and, once this is done, substantial economies in operating costs will automatically follow. Invariably, those who have followed this simple reasoning have found, to their regret, that such is not the case and that effective mechanization involves something more than the mere process of introducing loading equipment into a mine. To be effective, any programme of mechanization must take into consideration all operations incidental to the mining, transportation, and handling of the coal from the working face to the tipple, and must utilize equipment which can be best adapted to any peculiar condition or circumstance prevailing in the mine concerned. In the use of such equipment, the net and final result should be an improvement in operating costs of sufficient magnitude to at least return to the operator, over a specific period of years or during the expected life of that equipment, all his investment plus a fair return on that investment.

Commercial deposits of sodium sulphate are harvested from alkaline lakes that are widespread throughout semi-arid southern Saskatchewan and adjacent southeastern A lberta. Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Precipitation runoff from land adjacen1 to 1hese basins leaches 1he mineral from the soils and carries it in solu1ion 10 the basins. The process may be largely subsurface, wherein spring seeps feed basins associated with buried (preg/acial) river valleys. Evapora1ion during summer concentrates salts in the brines, and chilling of water below sa/Uration poin1 during win1er resu//s in deposi1ion of sodium sulpha1e (mirabili1e) crystals on lake bo//oms. Sodium su/pha1e, commercially known as sa/1 cake, ranks second only 10 po1ash in cen1ral-wes1ern Canada's nonme1allic mineral production. // is recovered from su,face brines, directly from intermittenl salt beds, and, until recently, by solution mining of shallow subswface deposits. Sodium sulphate is extrac1ed from seven alkaline lakes and sail f/a1s in Saska1chewan and one in Alberta. Annual produc1ion is approxima1e/y a halfmillion tonnes. Manufacture of kraft paper is the mos1 significanl marke1 for salt cake, but addi1ional quantifies are used in the glass and detergent manufac1uring indus1ries.

Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (1956–1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and, thereby, significantly inhibit acid generation, have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited’s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on “Fix Dmacs” technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.

ABSTRACT Based on mineralogical characteristics and processing techniques required, gold ores can be classified into 12 types: gold placers, quartz vein-lode ores, oxidized ores, silver-rich ores, iron oxide copper-gold ores, porphyry copper-gold ores, iron sulphide ores, arsenic sulphide ores, antimony sulphide ores, bismuth sulphide ores, telluride ores, and carbonaceous sulphide ores. The bulk mineralogy and gold deportment of each ore type differs and may have a significant impact on ore processing and metal extraction. This paper summarizes the bulk mineralogy and gold deportment in some major types of gold ore and discusses the potential impact of gold deportment on gold metallurgy.
