In recent technical investigations that were triggered from ore for rail shortfalls at Yandi, BHP Iron ore has identified a gap in resource knowledge relating to geo-metallurgical characteristics that predict materials handling performance and throughput. Within these investigations BHP has learnt that this lack of resource knowledge has translated to a lack of predictability associated with mine planning inputs which has resulted in poor compliance to plan and deviation management practices. A business value chain was developed in an attempt to identify the best possible solution to unlock this resource knowledge in the short, medium and long term planning horizons. A fast fail approach was taken with the implementation of hyperspectral blasthole analysis, which was chosen to deliver the best possible value driver for the asset. This report will detail the Yandi journey in expanding the hyperspectral and geo-metallurgical value chain, unlocking resource knowledge along the way. CITATION: Gilroy, P, 2018. The manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is not only energy-intensive but also releases a significant volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In addition, OPC in concrete often causes premature deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This paper explores an alternative to OPC concrete called geopolymer concrete.The present research utilises low calcium (class F) fly ash as the source material to produce geopolymer concrete. Several factors that affect the mix design process such as mix proportion, curing time, and curing temperature have been studied. In addition, the long-term properties such as drying shrinkage, creep, and exposure to sulfate attack are also being investigated.The test data presented in this paper reveal that geopolymer concrete possesses high compressive strength, undergoes very little drying shrinkage and moderately low creep, and shows excellent resistance to sulfate attack. The result is extremely promising and demonstrates the sustainability of geopolymer concrete as a construction material for a sustainable future.

A brief history of the mineral sands industry is given from a radiation protection standpoint, with gamma radiation and inhalation of radioactive dust being identified as the main sources of radiation exposure of persons working in the plants. The principal sources of gamma radiation exposure are identified and the history of early bagging methods is discussed. The concept of ALARA is introduced and the impact of the "bulka bags" (and more effective monazite storage facilities) are detailed as illustrative examples of dose minimization, together with the requirements for the transport of monazite. The dose from radiation received from inhaled dust is dependent on a number of parameters of the dust, some of which are not well known. ICRP 30 (1978) makes recommendations relating to the intake of radionuclides by workers. These recommendations are discussed with respect to the inhalation of dust containing thorium. The possible pathways of radioactive material throughout the body are also described. The effect of having parameters that differ from ICRP 30 is discussed and suggestions are made relating to measurements that can be carried out to more accurately determine these parameters. Since in some instances the exposures to dust yield personal doses which may exceed the annual ICRP 30 based limits, it is necessary to define more accurately parameters of the dust so as to determine more accurately personal Doses.

Particulate control is a major concern in underground mining and the subject of continuing research world wide. In Canada the federal government's Mining Research Laboratory at EIIiot Lake, Ontario, has been using two aerosol counters to aid its investigations. Specific studies with the units include: a) evaluating total and elemental size efficiencies of dust filtration units: b) characterizing the dust particulate cloud from different mining operations: and c) determining dust transportation characteristics.

The question of effective energy utilisation in grinding mills is not new. There are several conflicting arguments about tumbling mills, whether the efficiency is around 1 per cent or maybe 10 per cent, or even much lower. The energy not used is assumed to be lost as heating of the pulp, the grinding mill body, the charge, generation of shock waves and vibrations, etc. Stirred media mills on the other hand are generally considered to have better energy utilisation, but their energy efficiency is still not that clear. To shed some light on this a pilot-scale, wet stirred media mill was investigated over a range of operating conditions. The wet stirred media mill is a Drais PMH 5 TEX pearl mill fitted with an electric motor at 11 kW. It has been investigated over a range of operating conditions to try to balance the dissemination of the input energy in forms of the net grinding energy, mechanical energy losses, and the heating transferred to the pulp, the mill, the charge, and the cooling water. It is found that approximately 20–40 per cent of the input energy accounts for the grinding process. Also, that the difference between gross and net input electrical energy is mainly disseminated as heating of the pulp and cooling water. Mechanical energy losses appear to be much smaller than the heating effects. The use of a dispersant seems to mainly influence the heating effect.

Supergene enrichment of ilmenite occurs through a complex series of reactions with initial oxidation and hydration followed by leaching and dehydration. Lateritization appears to be associated with the early phase of the supergene process and if ilmenite grains are encased in iron oxides no further alteration proceeds.

As a project moves through the mine life cycle, the quantity of data available increases and the understanding of the orebody matures. Incorporating new information quickly and efficiently in current 3D models, is essential for adding value across the life-of-mine value chain. At the Martabe Gold Mine, the resource development group manages 14 drill rigs on six resource projects, including three operating mines. The Martabe deposits are geologically complex and the volume of new information that becomes available each day is substantial. It is imperative that new geological and assay information is integrated into the 3D models as soon as possible, so that drill planning and targeting can be modified accordingly. Martabe uses Leapfrog<sup>®</sup> 3D software to update and interrogate the 3D models on a dynamic basis as data becomes available. This results in faster and more effective changes to drill planning and schedules. The impact of this is better drill productivity and cost savings due to optimal drill targeting, and availability of up-to-date models incorporating the most current data. Nuggety gold-quartz reefs are characterised by localised, high-grades and in many cases coarse free-gold. Geometrical and grade complexities are often observed. The high-grade regions are generally erratic and have a low continuity; though may make the deposit economic. Viable grades are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade material. Drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development and bulk sampling. In general terms, only an inferred resource is likely to be estimated from surface drill data alone. Underground development, further drilling and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate inferred and indicated resources. Closely spaced development with bulk sampling is likely to be the best way to determine a probable reserve. The resource evaluation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand the controls to reef geometry and grade distribution. Geological interpretation has traditionally been undertaken in two-dimensions, though computer software is now being used to produce three-dimensional models. Grade interpolation has generally been undertaken using classical methods, typically weighted averages, zone of influence weighting and polygonal/sectional blocks. Tonnages can generally be calculated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because of its highly erratic and discontinuous nature. To account for variability it is recommended that a best estimate be reported within a grade range, as this more accurately reflects the uncertainties involved. Reporting should be undertaken within the framework of the JORC code, but should involve special consideration of grade reliability.

A positive mill reconciliation at a mine is a double-edged-sword. Much back slapping happens. The bank and the board can’t get enough until the downside becomes apparent. Over a prolonged period, there becomes an issue with market perception and the potential for shareholders to be misinformed regarding the potential value of the project. In addition, there are impacts on mine scheduling, waste allocation (or lack thereof), government expectations, and the potential for misguided external assumptions regarding the ‘unexpected’ results. The PT Agincourt Resources Martabe Gold Mine has shown a significant under-call, in the order of 20% total gold metal, between the Mineral Resource (MR) estimates and Grade Control (GC) estimates since production commenced in 2012. Recently, the under-call has been reduced by incorporating the use of grade control drilling in the MR grade estimates. Despite recent improvements in reconciliation, drilling in 2017 at both Purnama and Barani open pits shows that infill reverse circulation (RC) drill holes often produce significantly higher grades than those predicted in the MR block model. Incorporating industry best practice waste rock management methods can be a relatively straight forward task when preparing management documentation, such as an acid and metalliferous drainage management plan (AMDMP). However, a key difficulty is the incorporation of industry best practice methods that are practical and non-compromising on their purpose from a scientific standpoint. The second key difficulty is the implementation of these practical methods as various operational groups/departments are typically relied upon to execute and take ownership of different tasks or procedures.One approach to overcoming these difficulties is to develop an AMD Operations Manual (AMDOM) that:•Incorporates, where practicable and without compromising scientific merit, existing processes that those groups/departments ultimately responsible for the execution of the management action are familiar with; and•Provides standalone, simplistic, and easy to follow procedures for site personnel. The purpose of the standalone operations manual is to ensure site personnel who are responsible for undertaking specific procedures, have clear, step-by-step instructions for an individual procedure, without requiring interpretation and understanding of the more comprehensive AMDMP.In adopting a best practice approach to waste rock management for their iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Roy Hill developed an AMD Management System that is comprised of both an AMDMP and an AMDOM that are connected through adaptive management processes. New opportunities for miners are beginning to appear through new discoveries, improved knowledge and access to vast unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf. Recent discoveries of undersea hydrothermal deposits show evidence of high-grade mineralisation, although in many instances the extent of the resource is still unknown. The promise and the difficulties of undersea mining have been evident since attempts were first made to mine manganese nodules in the 1960s. The physical nature of the undersea resource is a key influence on its mining potential; and environmental issues will also become increasingly important. This paper explores these issues and concludes with a description of the immediate to medium term applied research required to develop this industry and the spin off that such research can provide.

The introduction reviews the tunnelling carried out in Singapore since the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1990, Phases 1 and 2 of the mass rapid transit system were constructed. These included some 20 km of bored and cut and cover tunnels together with 18 underground stations. Some particular points of interest in this massive project are briefly commented upon. Reference is also made to other underground or underwater schemes undertaken during this period such as the proposed large caverns project and the submerged tunnel to Pulau Seraya. A description of the subsurface works, now under construction in Singapore, follows. This includes an all underground North-East railway line 20 km long with 16 stations. At a budget of US$ 3 billion, this is a major civil engineering undertaking. Another project is the extension of the railway to Changi Airport which involves 3.5 km of twin tube tunnelling together with a major underground station which is fully integrated into the airport terminals. An on-going program of further major railway extensions over the next 10 to 15 years is in place and an outline is given of some of the most important underground sectors. Other proposed projects such as the underground roads system and the deep level sewers are briefly described. Together they demonstrate the very significant volume of underground construction scheduled for the next century in Singapore.

In the field of mineral extraction, complex technologies are being introduced in mines, operators/technicians rely on assistance from an expert (or more) in order to keep their machines functioning. Personnel with such expertise, however, are not always physically on-site. There is a growing need for innovative technological solutions to support effective delivery, just in time, of remote guidance between an offsite expert and an on-site maintenance operator. To meet this need, we have, as part of our Human System Integration project within the CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under (MDU), Transforming the Future Mine theme, explored the usefulness of a number of emerging technologies including: augmented reality, wearable systems and touch table interfaces. This paper presents ReMoTe, an augmented realty system for remote guiding using a touch table interface for the expert station and a combination of augmented reality and a wearable system at the operator end. In designing this system we were interested in exploring the extent to which it can increase the productivity and safety of maintenance personnel. This paper also presents Mobile ReMote, our recent development of a fully mobile remote guiding system. In Mobile ReMote, both the expert and the operator are using a near eye display and wearing a light computer in a back pack. The expert is able to guide the operator using his/her hands on the virtual display, while the operator is able to see the instructions on the rear eye display. Workers in the mining industry are highly mobile, a mobile expert and operator station will meet this need.

The Energy Authority of NSW has wide powers and responsibilities conferred by its Act which are pertinent to the State's coal industry and its development into the next century. With respect to coal, the broad objective is to maximise the benefits to NSW and its people derived from the State's coal resources. The initial focus of the Authority's coal-related activities in the late 70's and early 80's was on petroleum substitutes from coal. Research was supported, especially on hydrogenation, and the Authority participated in the Joint Australia/Federal Republic of Germany coal-to-oil feasibility study. It also co-ordinated a State Government initiative to involve the private sector in examining the possible establishment of a synthetic fuels industry based on Hunter Valley coal. With a short-fall in world-wide petroleum supply now seen as less likely for some years, the Authority is looking also at ways of working towards the broad objective in the field of coal utilisation on both domestic and export markets. Areas of interest include possibilities for using washery rejects, means of making NSW coal more competitive as an energy source, use of coal-seam gas and new or special technologies for burning coal. The future is expected to see renewed interest in producing petroleum substitutes, and coal - as the State's major energy resource - is seen as a strong contender as a basis for such an industry. Developments in coal-based power generation are also expected to have an impact, with advanced technologies having a possible place here as well as Overseas.

In the present study, from experimental results, a new concept of possibility of flotation separation of quartz from feldspar is presented. The effect of the nonionic surfactant Brij 58 on the flotation behaviour of quartz and feldspar has been investigated. The effect of the surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface was also studied. The results demonstrate that maximum flotability of quartz occurred at low concentration of surfactant. Feldspar is not collected by this surfactant. Flotation tests with feldspar that had previously been subjected to leaching by hydrochloric acid yielded similar flotation response as that of quartz. The effect of removal of alkali cations from feldspar surface on its flotability was investigated. The effects of inorganic and organic additives on the flotation recovery of quartz are discussed in terms of the slating-out or salting-in properties of these additives. With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014. During more than 100 years continuous mining of the lead-zinc orebody at Broken Hill, an immense amount of geological data has been collected about shear zones related to the orebody. The challenge to current mine geologists is to synthesise and interpret these data sets in a way that is applicable to production demands. Precise knowledge of the locations of major shear zones is important not only for the determination of ground conditions but also to develop an understanding of ore remobilisation along these structures. Traditionally, geological information has been collected from drill core and back and wall mapping underground, and interpreted on sections that are approximately 20 m apart. The recent introduction of MaptekÆs Vulcan software has enabled the shear zones to be modelled in three dimensions. The new three-dimensional shear models have been combined with seismic data from the Southern Cross area. The seismic data is collected from a microseismic monitoring system installed in the Pasminco Southern Operations in August 1996 (Rauert and Tully, 1998). The addition of seismic information to the shear zone models has led to a greater degree of certainty about the shear zone locations and has provided information about shear zones in areas yet to be drilled.

Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.

The engineering properties of soils and tailings often exhibit significant anisotropy. One area where this has been well documents is undrained shear strength. Materials sheared in directions close to the principal stress direction in situ, i.e. triaxial compression, typically exhibit higher undrained strengths than those sheared in other directions such as simple shear. Importantly, along the most common critical failure surfaces relevant to tailings stability, whether primarily through tailings or a critical foundation layer, saturated materials are generally much closer to the simple shear loading direction than triaxial compression. Therefore, testing undrained shear strength of tailings or foundation soils in triaxial compression is likely to result in overestimation of the relevant strengths for design. Although these issues have repeatedly documented in the geotechnical literature for over three decades, they are not appreciated sufficiently across our industry. In an attempt to address and highlight these issues, a review is carried out of historical reference to the importance of simple shear loading. Attention is then drawn to the techniques applied in three recent post-failure investigations, where simple shear testing was applied. Finally, some relevant laboratory test results from a recent project in which the author was involved are outlined.CITATION:Reid, D, 2018. The lignites of Otago and Southland offer a potentially viable future feedstock for electricity production and possible conversion to petrochemicals or liquid fuels. The deposits, when combined, represent New ZealandÆs largest energy inventory; equivalent to about 74 000 petajoules û or approximately 35 times current natural gas reserves. Too often dismissed as irrelevant to New ZealandÆs energy future because of adverse perceptions of the value of low rank coals, the strategic value of this resource is in fact huge.   Investigations of the lignites extend back over more than 50 years (LFTB various, CRL Energy Ltd). Whilst it is not the intention of this paper to review this work, these investigations have confirmed the suitability of the resource as a feedstock for thermochemical conversion. Current estimates of South Island lignite mining costs are NZ$1.0 - 3.0/GJ (Natusch 2005), making these resources amongst the most competitively-priced energy sources available world-wide.   This value, however, will only be captured if we as a country begin to envisage a world-scale, long-life, integrated and multi-faceted development sized to supply world markets for chemicals or fuels. Recent CAE studies (Hooper and Riddolls, 2005) have emphasised the vital importance of ensuring that any exploitation of this resource maximises their value to New Zealand. The question that thus must be applied is how might large-scale utilisation of the resource fit with New ZealandÆs primary energy supply, and its potential for the export of high-value commodities.   From the broader perspective of New ZealandÆs total energy supply equation we need to examine other supply options beyond just the generation of electricity. We face in this country a situation wherein almost all our liquid fuels feedstock has to be imported with projections for an increasing dependence on imported oil. In addition NZ has a natural gas reserves-to-production ratio of less than ten years, and dwindling supply from local production. Without further natural gas discoveries, New Zealand has only a window of approximately five years before we will need to commit to imported LNG or some other thermal fuels option.   In other words, New Zealand is facing an uncertain future unless we can restore energy inventories to cover an adequate strategic reserve capacity as well as enable long-term investment in alternative sources. Within this context the South Island lignite resources are thus deserving of more attention. The extent of the resource is well known, its suitability for conversion reasonably assessed, and its magnitude such that there is little doubt that lignite conversion could adequately meet NZÆs future energy needs for many years out.   This paper reviews coal gasification technology, its application to lignite and the possibilities for future development of the lignite resources. It is argued that the strategic imperative for this country is to secure the lignite resources as a primary energy source for this country well into the latter half of this century.
