The stabilities of rehabilitated landforms are often threatened by the altered surface hydrology, especially the excessive surface run-off, which may cause severe water erosion and associated pollutant transport to surrounding areas. These effects would lead to pollution in waterways and render the failure of newly established vegetation. An accurate quantitative evaluation of run-off problems are consequently essential for the proper rehabilitation designs which can help minimise these harmful consequences. For this purpose, in this study a novel run-off model, RunCA, was developed based on Cellular Automata (CA), integrating fundamental hydraulic principles. In this model, a series of rectangular cells were employed to cover the study area. Run-off production within each cell was simulated by determining the cell state (water surface elevation) that consists of both cell altitude and water depth. The distribution of water flow among cells was determined by applying CA transition rules based on the improved minimisation-of-difference algorithm and the calculated flow travelling time. RunCA was applied to various aspects in mined land rehabilitation planning, including landform designs for both hill-slopes and tailings dams, revegetation strategies and cover constructions. Simulation results showed that surface run-off increased with slope gradient and more run-off was produced on convex and straight slopes than on concave and S-shape slopes. Both mounds and rip lines constructed on the tailings dam surface could help reduce the water discharge. Vegetation planted in rows were more effective than those in columns or patches in controlling run-off. Increased cover thickness had the potential in reducing run-off rates, and the covers with an increasing thickness from top to bottom of the slope tended to be more efficient than those with a constant thickness. All these results have demonstrated the efficacy of RunCA as a simulation tool in assessing the hydrologic behaviours of different rehabilitation designs. Given the ever increasing quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), one of the most challenging issues presently facing policymakers and public administrators in Italy concerns how to organise and manage collection and recycling and to understand whether and to what extent recycled aggregate can complement natural building aggregates in a sustainable supply mix (SSM). The paper presents the results of a research aimed at analysing energy and environmental implications of the C&DW recycling chain in the administrative territory of Provincia di Torino in northern Italy. In respect of a population of about 2.25 million inhabitants, the annual production of C&DW in the area under study is 1.8 Mt. A combined geographical information system (GIS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was developed, paying attention to the geographical location, land use, transportation network and avoided landfill: crucial issues for sustainable planning and management. Around 90 recycling plants were classified according to the size, typology (stationary, semi-mobile and mobile) and physical- mechanical characteristics of the recycled aggregate. Under different assumptions relevant to the delivery distance, and considering the typology and grade of recycled aggregate, as well as local availability of natural aggregates, it was possible to evaluate the geographical coverage of aggregates demand and to use LCA in order to identify and quantify energy and environmental indicators.

Sticking and breakage of iron ore pellets during high temperature reduction can result in several operational challenges during shaft furnace ironmaking. With the shift to H2-based DRI processes and decreasing iron ore quality, this issue becomes more prominent. It is therefore important to understand how the iron ore chemistry and mineralogy affects the sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. This study provides a review of the mechanisms that lead to sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. The sticking index of pellets is related to the rate of metallic iron production as well as the precipitation morphology of product iron. Sticking of pellets is also enhanced by the formation of low-melting slag phases. The breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace is often associated with the mechanical load of burden and pellet swelling, which is caused due to iron whisker or protruded iron formation. This paper investigates how the composition of iron ore, particularly the presence of different impurity oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and alkali oxides in the pellets, influences the sticking and swelling indices. The effect of ore mineralogy on these adverse behaviours is also discussed.

Fully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for more than 40 years and are becoming more and more popular especially when severe geological conditions are encountered, such as high stresses and large cross-section excavations. The axial performance of cable bolts are mainly relied on the load transfer process between the cables themselves and surrounding rock masses via grout annulus. Therefore, the selected grouts play a significant role in determining the reinforcement quality for underground openings. In order to better understand the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout, which is one type of cementitious grouts commonly used in Australian underground coalmines, plenty of unconfined compressive tests are conducted on it. Following diverse standards, two different kinds of samples are prepared and tested with the w/c ratio ranging from 0.35 to 0.45. During the test important mechanical properties including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratios and so forth are recorded. Based on experimental results, the effect of w/c ratio on the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout is studied. Surface displacements are routinely monitored at multiple points during slope excavation. The monitoring data reveals the safety status of the slope under current loading conditions. They can be used to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope by reducing the uncertainties of the prediction model and its model parameters. In a multistage excavation, the observed displacements in the current stage can be used to update the prediction of the displacements in subsequent stages. Besides, due to the spatial correlation of the slope parameters, the prediction of the displacement at one location can also be updated using the monitored displacements at adjacent locations. This study aims to develop a multistep updating method to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope using time-series monitoring data at multiple points. This method integrates the theoretical computational model with observational evidence. It considers the inherent uncertainty of the slope, model uncertainty and measurement uncertainty. With more monitoring information being incorporated, the prediction becomes closer to the actual performance of the slope. Barcelona Metro Line 9 (Line 9) is an essential infrastructure, improving the transversal transport in Barcelona by connecting the greater part of the currently existing radial lines. The purpose of Line 9 is to create a peripheral line surrounding the city of 1.6 million people (metropolitan area exceeds five million), and includes 52 stations, of which a total of 32 are deep shafts and 19 transfer stations in a densely populated area with several geographical constraints.The tunnel has an inner diameter of 10.90 m, bored with an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in soil sections with precast concrete lining type universal ring and segments 40 cm thick.A single tunnel solution was adopted, driven by functionality and costs savings. The internal tunnel section is divided into two levels to allow for one way rail transit including the platforms in each station on each level in order to optimise the space created by the TBM excavation and comply with the operational needs. Bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals is a familiar and commercially available process to enhance gold recovery with problem ores. Pintail Systems, a Colorado, USA based company had developed bio-processes for gold recovery based on natural mineral formation and transformation in a global mineral cycle. The biological recovery of precious metals from ore involves a number of mechanisms that are dependent on the metal-mineralogical association. These processes include: partial bio-oxidation of sulfide ores; oxidation of gangue minerals exposing gold to leaching; surfactant properties of bacteria/nutrient solutions that improve wettability of ores and solution contact with leachable gold and silver; and microbial production and excretion of trace amounts of gold lixiviants, and bio-fracturing or biological alteration of ore minerals. Pintail has demonstrated enhanced recovery of precious metals during cyanide detoxification of spent heaps at the end of mine life. Biological recovery processes also have the potential to be applied to in situ mining technologies. The in situ process application could recover gold from subgrade deposits, small deposits or those ore bodies with uneconomic stripping ratios for conventional mining. In situ biomining can be accomplished at a fraction of the cost of conventional mining and leaching and does not have the environmental liabilities associated with many conventional gold lixiviants.

A method that optimises mining complexes that are comprised of multiple processing destinations, open pits and underground operations is presented. Mining, blending, processing and transportation decision variables are simultaneously optimised while accounting for geological uncertainty. The method uses a simulated annealing algorithm at different decision levels to generate a stochastic-based extraction sequence and processing policies. The 372 MW Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project is a peaking power scheme located in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The main features of the project include an 84 m high roller compacted concrete dam; two weirs which divert flows from adjacent catchments via transfer tunnels into the main reservoir; an underground power waterway; and an underground power station complex comprising three large caverns with connecting tunnels approximately 240 m below surface level. The project includes approximately 25 km of tunnels excavated in fresh granite rock mass with some distinct shear zones of weaker material. The majority of the tunnels are being excavated using drill and blast, with the two transfer tunnels being excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM).This paper focuses on the design and construction of the Telanok underground power station complex and also some aspects of the design for the headrace tunnel. This paper describes work conducted as part of an overall research project that aims to identify current and emerging trends in the development of automation and remote mining technologies, and to provide an operator-centred perspective to the design and deployment of such systems. More specifically, this paper outlines a research and development process being constructed to examine the issues of the human skills and capabilities required to operate or maintain automated/remote controlled mobile mining equipment. A human factors approach presented here, where the focus is upon designing equipment interfaces to fit operators, rather than purely designing and deploying the equipment based on a technology-centred approach. However, the importance of training to help develop the required skills and capabilities is also emphasised.The work built on a full review of the literature about the effects of automation in mining and elsewhere, extensive interviews with different stakeholders in mining automation and recognised best practice regarding designing for the human element in automated systems. The human element research and development process proposed is in four stages, ranging from understanding the tasks involved in both manual and automated equipment operation through to user trials to ensure that the automated systems are acceptable to operators and are fit for purpose.It is outside the scope of the current paper to present the full data collection described by this four stage process, but an overview of what will be collected is presented. As such, this paper focuses on the broad methods being developed, rather than the specific results to be obtained. The ultimate objective is to apply a broad ‘technology assessment’ approach to the design, deployment and evaluation of automated mining technologies, in particular by considering the user-centred design implications of these technologies.

The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

A material aim when feeding ore blends into a processing facility is to reduce the variability of the properties of the feed material and to maximise the output, or throughput. At the Mining Geology conference of 2019, we presented a paper on optimal blending of coking coal given geological variability. The paper introduced integer-programming techniques to both maximise value and minimise feed or product variability. We discussed an application where the geological uncertainty is characterised using a normal distribution and exact solutions are readily obtainable using second order conic constraints in the mathematical model. Geological uncertainty is not always normally distributed, many properties will be characterised as log normal or some other skewed distribution. For example, copper can be some form of lognormal and Fe in Iron ore has a left skewed distribution. In this paper, we discuss some distribution free techniques to optimise the blends of plant feed or output given a quantified geological uncertainty. We discuss the sample average approximation method and how to set-up and apply the method to an ore blending problem. Evaluating a case study demonstrates that the explicit use of non-normally distributed geological uncertainty can better optimise feed into an ore processing facility and potentially add significant value. The approach is equally applicable to all mining and processing operations that blend material into a processing facility or directly into a saleable product.

Geometallurgical modelling is increasingly being incorporated into mineral resource modelling and estimation as a means of increasing efficiency, decreasing operating costs and reducing risk in mining operations. Traditional geostatistical workflows for geometallurgical modelling face several difficulties, in particular, related to the non-additivity of process response variables, to highly heterotopic data sets and/or to preferential sampling designs, all of which may explain why most attempts to estimate geometallurgical response variables from assay data and mineralogy are still based on statistics and machine learning. The aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate the applicability of geostatistics to estimate copper recovery from copper sulfide ores at the Prominent Hill Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) deposit in Australia. As recovery is non-additive, the preferred workflow is the joint estimation of the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, both of which are additive variables. While the mass of metal in the feed can be estimated from abundant online assay analyses, the mass of metal in the concentrate can only be estimated from a very limited number of laboratory-scale batch flotation tests. Traditional approaches to estimating the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, such as simple and ordinary co-kriging, are described and discussed. A modified version of co-kriging is introduced, which incorporates linear relationships between the mean values of the input variables, in addition to a spatial correlation model. Co-kriging with related means is shown to outperform traditional simple and ordinary co-kriging in terms of precision, accuracy and consistency of the estimates, and offers a practical and efficient tool to deal with highly heterotopic and preferential sampling designs.

High-water rapid-solidifying material, called 'high-water material', is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of hackfill body. environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

Maximising ore tonnage at a selected target grade requires that appropriate ore identification criteria be established. Iron ore mining block models may consist of many millions of estimated blocks, each block corresponding to the selective mining unit (SMU), with grade interpolated from drill hole data. Each block can be considered as a potential ore candidate. Analysis of such a huge database can require large computational resources, especially for sensitivity analysis requiring multiple computations. However, an alternative streamlined approach is possible, where the data are compressed to an appropriately smaller and representative subset. The consequent data reduction not only makes it feasible to consider the simultaneous analysis of multiple pits but also considerably speeds up computation, enabling sensitivity analysis of the potential ore tonnage as a function of the required grade. Ore identification criteria can be successfully established using appropriately chosen reduced data comprising less than one per cent of the blocks. The ore identified is virtually indistinguishable in tonnage and grade from the ore that would be selected using the entire block model.Two methods of data reduction are tested: sampling (using a proportion of unaltered blocks) and binning (consolidating groups of blocks to a single average grade). The source blocks are first sorted (such as by location, analyte grade, principal component score, random order or value) before sampling or binning. In this study, the sorting options considered were by location and Fe grade. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated using the block model subsets to select the maximum tonnage of ore at a specified target grade. Block model data from an anonymous Pilbara iron ore project with about one million blocks averaging 1.132 kt were used. The blocks are from multiple resource models, to be blended to a single product. Sampling is shown to be superior to binning because sampling preserves the full variability while binning, although matching the mean block grades reduces their variability.It was found that the appropriately sampled data sets (sorted by location) gave results virtually identical to the results for the full data set, even when the samples comprised less than one per cent of the original blocks. The reduction in computer time to identify maximum tonnage at a specified grade was approximately proportional to the sample percentage. The increase in computation speed greatly facilitated sensitivity analysis. A sampled data set of one-eighth the total block model was used to investigate the effects of changing each of the component grades around the original grade specification. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed, and illustrate the potential benefit of carrying out sensitivity analysis in determining feasible and marketable product grades.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Newmont Australia is the operator of the Mt Leyshon mine near Charters Towers, Queensland. Mt Leyshon is an open cut gold mine, which processed on average 5.0 Mt of ore and produced up to 250 000 ounces of gold per year. Mining was completed in early-2001, followed by treatment of low-grade ore stockpiles for a further 12 months. Approximately 250 ha of waste rock dumps have been rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of two of the three tailings storage facilities (TSF) has been completed and the third is in progress. A field performance monitoring system that includes an automated meteorological station, large-scale lysimeters (measurement of net percolation), and in situ moisture content sensors (measurement of moisture storage changes in the cover material) were installed to monitoring performance of the cover systems placed on the waste storage facilities. This paper focuses on the installation and calibration of the in situ moisture monitoring system. The moisture monitoring system provides automated detailed in situ volumetric water content data above and within the large-scale lysimeters. A portable unit that provides spatial in situ moisture content measurements at additional locations on the cover system is also utilised. The paper will focus on installation and calibration of the in situ water content monitoring instrument in the waste rock, coarse cover material, and fine textured cover materials of the tailings facility and waste rock dump cover systems.

The Eucla Basin in southern Australia is emerging as an important global source of zircon from heavy mineral sands. Understanding the geological evolution of the basin and movement of heavy minerals down peripheral paleovalleys and along paleocoastlines is essential to effectively refine exploration strategies for heavy minerals in the basin. Integration of geoscientific datasets in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment has proved to be effective in reconstructing depositional environments along the Cenozoic basin margin and in tracing the buried paleorivers that once drained broad areas of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Yilgarn and Gawler cratons, the dominantly Mesoproterozoic Musgrave and Albany-Fraser Provinces, and the Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic Officer Basin. Sea level highstands during the late Middle Eocene (39 - 36 Ma) are associated with formation of the Ooldea coastal barrier complex and the zircon-rich heavy mineral deposits at Jacinth, Ambrosia and Tripitaka. More extensive transgression during the Late Eocene (36 - 34 Ma) built the complex Barton shorelines that host the Cyclone deposit and the extensive ilmenite-dominated occurrences of the Barton West prospect. Multi-generation reworking of the source sands is indicated by the high proportion of deposits that are zircon-rich relative to titanium minerals. The age distribution of zircon grains in heavy mineral concentrates from the Ooldea and Barton barrier systems points to the Musgrave Province as the predominant ultimate zircon source. Paleorivers discharging along the northern basin margin presumably carried a sediment load that was then redistributed by easterly longshore drift to build the extensive coastal sand deposits along the northern and eastern basin margin. The south-eastern extension of these deposits was reworked during Miocene-Pliocene (15 - 2 Ma) times into a series of regressive strandlines that show angular discordance with the Eocene coastlines. This discordance is consistent with evidence for long-wavelength tilting of the Australian continent from Middle Miocene times, as the continent drifted toward a dynamic topographic low induced by convective mantle processes associated with the South East Asia subduction systems. The Dromedary and Gulliver’s deposits probably formed at this time. Ongoing research is focused on the geological features of the basin that influence heavy mineral transport, concentration and preservation, and the processes leading to deposits with high zircon content.

On Wednesday 11th November, 1970, a series of violent explosions occur-- red within No.1 Basic Oxygen Steelmak- ing (B.O.S.) furnace at the Whyalla Works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., (B.H.P.) when the furnace was moved immediately prior to tapping. Water from a burnt out flux chute had flooded the bath while the furnace was tilted slightly towards the tapping side waiting to tap. Although no one was injured, dam- age in excess of $54 000 was caused to the hood and superstructure. The water hydrated the burnt dolomite refractory lining some of which sub- sequently collapsed exposing bare fur- nace shell over part of the cone.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.
