The South Island of New Zealand comprises a collage of distinct tectonostratigraphic terranes. Some tectonic models predict that these terranes formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland. However, geologic evidence suggests that some of these terranes may be exotic. Over 400 samples from 30 sites were collected from the Brookstreet terrane within the Takitimu Mountains. The section includes the early Permian Takitimu Group and the late Permian White Hill Intrusive Suite. Over 80% of the rocks show a partial or complete regnetization in the present field due to recent acquistion of VRM. Although some remagnetization of the Takitimu Group occurred during the emplacement of the White Hill Intrusives, both early and late Permian direction have been isolated. These directions indicate a mid-latitude origin for the Brookstreet terrane, and suggest a strong clockwise rotation between early and late Permian time. A published paleomagnetic result from the younger, but related, Murihiku terrane suggests that the Brookstreet terrane was sutured to the margin of Gondwanaland by the late Triassic, or that the Brookstreet and Murihiku are two distinct terranes.

Both safety and productivity in underground gassy coal mines can be improved substantially if an appropriate gas management system is introduced. A strong direct relationship exists between the gas emission rate, roof and floor strata relaxation zones characteristic, mining activities and gas drainage practices. Detailed knowledge of geological factors, gas and coal-rock properties, as well as mining systems are necessary for the methodology used in predicting overall underground gassiness, and planning gas capture and ventilation systems. Early gas emission calculations for various mining activities, particularly for the longwall mining system are essential. A reasonably accurate prediction of gas make as well as the design of ventilation, gas recovery (drainage holes) techniques can be made using 'Floorgas' and 'Roofgas' computer simulations, provided sufficient geological, mining, and gas data are made available.

The Permian coal in the Muja Coal Measures of Collie Basin of Western Australia has a subdued lustre because of the fine laminations of lithotypes, and the dominance of dull and dull banded lithotypes with minor bright, bright banded and fusinous types. The maceral composition of the coal is variable, however the macerals of vitrinite and inertinite groups dominate and the exinite and mineral matter contents are low. The lithotypes have low concentrations of trace elements and the boron concentration is between 10 - 100 ppm recorded only from the dull lithotypes. On the basis of organic petrology, the inter-seam sediments, flora and the very low concentration of boron, the depositional environment postulated for the coal is braided, fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine with marked fluctuations in the water table. The low water table in the environment accounts for fusain and inertodetrinite in the coal.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. An attempt is made to relate gold adsorption and zeta potential on carbon surface with the pH of the medium.

There are many underground mines with shaft or decline access with limited production capacity or where the mine may become uneconomical as trucking costs escalate with increasing depth of the decline. In such cases a need may exist for a shaft hoisting system which can be constructed more quickly and more economically than a shaft sunk by conventional methods. Relatively cheap small diameter shafts can be constructed by raise boring. This paper describes a simple hoisting system which has been designed to take advantage of the benefits of raise boring. The system uses twin bored raises with a double drum winder hoisting a skip in each hole. The design concept is based on 1. accepting that the raises cannot be truly straight or vertical, 2. using the raise to guide the conveyance, and 3. minimising operating, maintenance, and capital costs. The hoisting system requires a certain degree of accuracy in the alignment of the twin raises. A survey of raise boring practice showed that the required accuracy could probably be achieved with conventional techniques. However it was thought it would be necessary to survey the pilot hole during drilling and to be able to correct the hole if deviation became

Design of cemented fill in mining is often carried out without any consideration of the structure of the fill. The composition of cemented fills varies in the stopes due to the placement method, and the strength of the fill in the laboratory depends on the density, orient- ation, moisture content and drainage conditions. Within each stope there are definite zones and the structure of both cemented rockfill and cemented hydraulic fill has to be defined for each zone and the field conditions simulated in the laboratory. Structure also affects fill permeability and compressibility. From a study of the cemented fill in place, the effect of changes in the placement methods can be seen and then controlled to improve fill performance and economy. These features of cemented hydraulic fill and cemented rockfill behaviour are discus- sed and illustrated through reference to field and laboratory work undertaken at Mount Isa.

The volumetric distribution of valuable mineral, or phase, within a set of particles is called the liberation distribution. To optimise a mineral processing plant it is necessary to know the liberation distribution in most of the streams, especially those adjacent to separation devices. Possibly the most common method of analysing ore particles is to section sets of similarly-sized particles. However, the observed sections can appear liberated even if the particle is composite. This means that the 'apparent' liberation distribution can be very different to the 'actual' liberation distribution. This discrepancy is called stereological error. One must then somehow estimate the actual liberation distribution using the apparent liberation distribution. This problem is called the liberation distribution problem and its solution is the subject of this paper. The solution is based on a sorting algorithm which uses geometric probability equations. These equations are based on the assumption that sectioning is isotropic and uniform. Apart from these assumptions the equations are completely independent of particle shape or texture. The algorithm is verified by numerical simulation and experimental methods. For the numerical simulations the correspondence between the actual and estimated liberation distributions is excellent. For the experimental methods, the agreement is not as good and appears to be due to experimental errors.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

The principle objective of development mining is to create thoroughfares that can be accessed by personnel and machinery for the entire life of an underground mine. The drill and blast process, being the primary method used when creating these thoroughfares, needs to be able to adequately fracture the rock to be removed whilst at the same time minimising any damage that may be sustained to the rock surface that remains. This process of damage prevention is known by a variety of different names including smooth blasting, sculpture blasting, contour blasting and controlled blasting. Whilst the terms are different, the objective is the same and that is to reduce and better distribute the explosive charges to minimise stressing and fracturing of the rock beyond the neat excavation line. The process in this report will be referred to as perimeter control blasting. This paper will discuss the benefits of using perimeter control blasting in a development mining operation and the theories that govern how these blasting techniques work. The methods that are used to implement perimeter control blasting will also be addressed, paying particular attention to how these blasting techniques have evolved, spawning new and improved perimeter control products. Finally some attention will be given to the process of optimising perimeter control blasting in any underground mining operation.

Recently there has been increased recognition o'f the cost savings that can be achieved by the greater use of offsite preassembly for the construction of industrial plants. Preassembly is a method of construction which involves considerable offsite assembly of complete sections of an industrial plant in established fabrication shops. The preassemblies are transported to the plant site, often by large and oversize transport systems where they are set on prepared foundations, finished and interconnected to other sections of the plant as required. The concept of preassembly is not new, but widespread interest has been shown because site construction costs in all parts of the world have increased rapidly and often at a greater rate than in established fabrication areas. Particular interest has be focused on remote, isolated and inhospitable plant site locations. These areas require the import of skilled labour, the payment of high labour rate premiums and the development of infrastructure to support the workforce for the duration of the construction period.

Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations. The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

The Myally Beds, Surprise Creek Beds and Mount Isa Group form the upper part of the Proterozoic Western succession of rocks in northwest Queensland. The latter two units are partly equivalent, and are important for their base metal content at Mount Isa and elsewhere. The arenaceous Myally Beds lie unconform- ably or disconformably below the Mount Isa Group and Surprise Creek Beds; they contain four mappable units which were deposited on a broad, shallow shelf washed by east-trending currents. Emergence of the Myally shelf initiated a series of parallel, possibly intra- cratonic, troughs to the east and west. In the east, the Surprise Creek Beds were deposited between the emergent shelf and base- ment rocks, and consist of a shelf and trough facies divisible into 7 and 10 units, respectively. Trough sediments are continuous north-south, and show turbidite character- istics; algal dolomite characterizes the shelf facies. To the west in the Mount Isa trough, an orthoquartzite facies, the Warrina Park Quartzite, defines the base of the Mount Isa Group. Hinge zones between the shelf and trough environments are marked by east-west facies changes, and provide a focus for later major north-south faulting. However, some penecon- temporaneous faulting near Mount Isa is best explained as complex post-depositional faulting of a disconformable sequence. Subsidence and deposition in the Mount Isa trough continued for a longer period than in the Surprise Creek trough, allowing accumulation of lead and zinc deposits in the upper half of the sequence. The Surprise Creek Beds appear equivalent to the lower half of the Mount Isa Group, and are probably not prospective for lead and zinc. Turquoise and possible other secondary copper minerals are widespread in the Warrina Park Quartzite and equivalents in the Surprise Creek Beds, and further investigation of these formations seems warranted.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. A new rapid spectroscopic core and chip logging and imaging system developed by CSIRO was evaluated by PIRSA and GA on a wide variety of mineralised properties in South Australia, including the Emmie Bluff, iron oxide copper-gold-style prospect on the Stuart Shelf. During a three-month campaign in South Australia in 2003 the system logged over 50 000 metres of core from the State Core Library, company prospects and mines. The new system uses automated core tray handling, continuous visible and infrared spectroscopy, and digital imaging, to characterise and identify dominant mineral species on core, chips and pulps, at spatial resolutions of ~1 cm (spectral data) and ~0.1 mm (image data). The system can log up to 1000 m of core per day and several thousand metres of drill chips. Mineralogy is pre-interpreted using specialised identification software trained on a selected suite of minerals showing characteristic absorption features within the measured spectral range. On core from the Emmie Bluff iron oxide copper-gold prospect, 470 km NW of Adelaide and 80 km SSE of the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au deposit, the spectral mapping system was able to characterise a number of alteration zones enveloping the sub-economic Cu-Au mineralisation. These consist of distal white mica phases showing decreasing Al content towards mineralisation, a zone of increased iron oxide content in the hangingwall to mineralisation, and a zone proximal and coincident to Cu-Au mineralisation that is enriched in chlorite with variable Mg/Fe chemistry. Additionally the results show background spectral characteristics that mimic the magnetite distribution.

The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthermometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10-15 pm in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170-220¦C in early 2A veins, 165-322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190-256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8-11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt. Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 ¦m are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160-268¦C and salinities of 5-8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Hazards in underground mines are concomitant with the mining of mineral deposits and have their source in a minerÆs work environment. The authors of the paper have undertaken a trial classification of these hazards into three groups, depending on the sphere of their occurrence:lithosphere, ie rock mass, atmosphere, ie air in mine workings, and technosphere, ie machines, equipment and facilities in mine workings. The lithosphere creates such hazards as bumps, rock outbursts, the atmosphere is a factor causing fires, methane explosions and climatic hazards, whereas accidents concomitant with an operation of machines and equipment occur in the technosphere. Assuming that the number of accidents in the mining industry, concomitant with hazards, reflects the degree of safety, it has been shown, that in Poland they are under control to a large extent.
