The integration of iron rejection as hematite with the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process has been investigated on the laboratory scale. The two-stage pressure leach process is applicable for a greenfield zinc plant, or for replacement of the conventional roast-leach circuit in an existing zinc plant. An excess of zinc concentrate is used to accomplish acid neutralisation in the first stage of pressure leaching, and the residual concentrate in the first stage residue is treated with an excess of acid solution in the second stage of pressure leaching to yield high zinc extraction. Integration of hematite precipitation with this process allows for the potential sale of the iron residue, greatly decreasing the residue disposal problem. Two flowsheets containing the desirable features of both of these processes are described in this paper, along with laboratory Results.

Major changes occurred in the management of loss prevention and risk management at operations in North and South America due to increased insurance premiums following the Olympic Dam fire in Australia in 2001. There are many different scenarios on how fires can develop and the estimated maximum losses (EML) those fires can incur. The EML is utilised by insurance companies to determine the cost of insurance premiums. The cost of insurance can be controlled at existing and newly designed solvent extraction (SX) plants by using risk reduction methods and design criteria to limit the fire exposure. A review of data collected during several loss prevention risk assessments can show how a budget can be protected from dramatically increased premiums and see which design of SX plant and fire protection standards best apply to your operations. The paper will investigate the pitfalls of existing materials of construction, capacity, geography, management practices, fire risk minimisation, and fire suppression systems. Intelligent engineering and managerial improvements implemented by the operations in the Americas in the past two years have further minimised the fire potential and benefited companies in insurance renewal negotiations.

A fundamental model, which considers the subprocesses of particle collection by bubbles in flotation, is applied to two comprehensive flotation surveys in the rougher stages of C3 concentrator, PT Freeport Indonesia. The flotation surveys focused on the collection of: cell-by-cell and size-by-size metallurgical, cell hydrodynamic, and pulp and surface chemistry information.The two surveys were conducted at significantly different feed tonnages, giving rise to significantly different feed particle size distributions, pulp densities and mean pulp residence times. A series of model simulations are performed with the aim of quantifying changes in copper recovery, on both a size-by-size and unsized basis, with changes in values of the hydrodynamic parameters and hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral. This was carried out in an effort to identify the most promising route to increase overall copper recovery in roughing. It was found that by increasing the hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral surfaces it became possible to optimise cell hydrodynamics, which targeted increased fine (-12 ¦m) copper sulfide mineral recovery but without adversely affecting coarse (+150 ¦m) copper sulfide mineral recovery.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. Potential waste rock products from the mining of epithermal deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are characterised to facilitate their management. Hydrothermally altered andesites and their weathered near surface equivalents have been examined from the Golden Cross, Karangahake and Monawai gold deposits. These materials vary in both their clay content (smectite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite) and the degree of silicification resulting from alteration and weathering. The simulated degradation (slaking tests) of waste materials cannot be explained purely by consideration of clay content, siliciflcation, or the resultant variations in porosity.   Microstructure is considered to be essential in predicting the physical degradation of waste rock. The scanning electron microscope is an effective tool in such an investigation. Increasing alteration results in clay particles becoming more randomly orientated (matrix microstructure); this causes a reduction in the surface area of contacts between components resulting in increased potential for degradation. The extent of skeletal microstructure (commonly characteristic of weathering) is an important control on effective porosity and the long term potential for degradation. Management requirements for these materials include the minimisation of moisture content variations (with the prevention of initial drying being of primary importance) and the containment of sediments produced.

The Sepon district in Lao PDR contains 1.8 Mt of JORC (2012) compliant contained Cu resources in addition to >4.5 Moz of Carlin-like Au in a Palaeozoic sedimentary package. The Cu deposits are proximal to an EW lineament of Permian rhyodacite porphyry (RDP) intrusive centres that are characterised by intense barren quartz stockworks. The Khanong deposit (42 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu mineral inventory) is a carbonate replacement intermediate sulfidation deposit verging on a high sulfidation environment, where abundant pyrite, copper sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite, trace enargite), copper sulfosalts (including tennantite – tetrahedrite, colusite), and base metal sulfides (sphalerite and galena) have replaced low dipping dolomite and limestone layers, forming a manto-style orebody fed by steep dipping intensely silica-pyrite altered structures. The Thengkham deposits (54 Mt at 1.5 per cent Cu) are composed of prograde skarns (garnet, clinopyroxene) and mineralised retrograde skarns (chlorite, magnetite, hematite, epidote, sericite, talc, serpentine, carbonates, sulfides) which are irregularly and semi-continuously distributed around an elongate 4 km long intrusive centre. Thengkham and Khanong have been strongly supergene enriched, forming secondary chalcocite breccias and exotic malachite zones.The Carlin-like Au deposits display a range of stratigraphic and structural controls and lie outboard of the Cu deposits. Similar structural controls, alteration assemblages and trace mineralogies suggest that gold and copper mineralisation are temporally and genetically related. During induration of iron ore pellets produced from magnetite concentrates, there are many reactions occurring simultaneously. While the magnetite is being oxidised to hematite, carbonate fluxes are being calcined, leading to the formation of complex oxides. Calcination of fluxes and the formation of calcium and magnesium ferrites and silicates during the preheat stage can influence the magnetite oxidation process. As the calcination reaction proceeds quicker than oxidation at temperatures experienced during the preheat stage (700 - 1200¦C), the bulk flow of CO2 emanating from within the pellet should disrupt the diffusion of O2 to the magnetite reaction as the gas fluxes are similar in magnitude. This increases the time required for the oxidation of the pellet. Using an infrared rapid heating furnace, experiments were performed on heating individual magnetite green balls in an air atmosphere. These experiments showed that time played an important role in the extent of oxidation and calcination and temperature significantly influenced the initial evolution of high temperature phases such as magnesioferrite, calcium ferrites and calcium silicates. Understanding the kinetics of all these reactions for a particular pellet feed, and their interaction, is important for optimising the design of the induration furnace.

Most mineral products exported from Australia to Japan, with the notable exception of coal, are purchased with weight and quality determined on discharge. Sampling of imported minerals for purpose of payment is done at facilities owned and operated by the purchaser. The selling shipper is represented at the weighing, sampling and testing by an independent inspection group who supervises the whole procedure. Sampling and testing are done within the provisions of the contract between the two parties, and normally in accordance with the relevant Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). These JIS specify such things as the number and mass of increments to be taken; the practice of taking these increments; the method of determination of moisture, size distribution and quality. The JIS concerned with sampling however, are meant to be basic guides rather than rigid rules. Hence sampling and testing practice varies from plant to plant. In general Japanese sampling facilities and methods are elaborate and efficient. Opportunity is given for the discussion of varying technical viewpoints between consumer and shipper. However the resolution of differences and the implementation of changes normally takes a long time. The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities.

Feasibility studies in the development of mining projects are fundamental to most investment decisions. It is important that the issues addressed and the degree of detail involved in feasibility studies are consistent with the investment decisions to be taken. Emphasis should be placed on a thorough analysis of critical project parameters prior to detailed investigations being undertaken into other activities which are not relevant to the decisions at hand. Therefore, the issues to be decided upon should be influenced significantly by the stage of development of the project and by the reliability of technical and financial information used in the study. Some of the more critical parameters of feasibility studies are commodity prices, inflation rates and discount rates. Advice is given on the selection of these inputs and also on their application in the feasibility study as the project progresses through its various development stages. The Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery yields a low grade concentrate containing high levels of zinc and copper. External refining charges and high transport costs prompted the company to establish itsown enrichment facility.The route chosen was a wet chemicaltreatment which converts the gold, silver and other metals to their chloride. This is achieved with hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite. Gold is recovered from the resulting filtrate by cementation with copper.The solid residue from the gold process is washed and treated with ammonia which dissolves the silver chloride. Metallic silver is recovered from this solution, againby cementation with copper.

Epithermal gold-silver deposits occur in young volcanic terrains where post-mineral cover commonly impedes the search for mineralisation. At the Togi Project in Honshu, Japan, a complex mineralised system is largely covered by post mineral volcaniclastics. A combination of high resolution electrical resistivity surveying and detailed airphoto interpretation has, with close geological control, enabled synthesis of structural and alteration characteristics of the Togi geothermal system, in turn permitting ranking of the prospects for drill testing.

Iron ore sintering is very complex with many interdependent variables. For the same ores, the sinter quality and sintering performance may vary significantly with the scale at which the sintering tests are conducted. Therefore it is important to understand the effect of test scale on sintering performance and sinter quality while interpreting the test results. In this paper, different scales of iron ore sintering research at CSIRO are described and compared. This is followed by the results of two sinter blends tested at different scales. The results are compared and correlated to demonstrate the benefits of iron ore sintering research at the laboratory (4 g), small (5 - 8 kg) and pilot (55 - 140 kg) scales.

The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator. The efficient development and exploitation of an orebody relies on an understanding of the mineral characteristics of the deposit. This information is valuable throughout the mining cycle - during exploration, assessment, testing, design, operation and rehabilitation. Problems can arise at each stage if there is an inadequate appreciation of the mineralogy involved and its effects on the treatment process. Modern image analysis systems now permit a more quantitative understanding of the mineralogy of an ore to be gathered. Where previously the metallurgist had to rely on qualitative information to guide technical decisions, it is now possible to give numerical estimates to the compositional and textural properties which govern the mineral concentration processes. Ore samples can be characterised according to modal abundances, mineral grain size parameters and mineral associations, all of which affect the liberation and concentration of the values. The paper will discuss the application of quantitative process mineralogy by considering a number of case studies. These include: ore characterisation to assist in exploration, assessment and mine planning; modal analysis of complex mineral suites to assist in the evaluation of ores, the deportment of values between products and the recovery or loss of these values; liberation analysis for ore testing, plant optimisation and performance monitoring; and characterisation of tailing to guide estimates of leachability, stability and rehabilitation options.

The Kundana underground narrow vein gold mine had a recent history of large and damaging seismic events. Following a period of seismic events on 30 July 2001, in which nine miners were temporarily entrapped at depth due to falls of ground in several parts of the decline, the mine operation was required to develop a seismic management system to mitigate seismic risk to the operation. A micro seismic systems and boundary element modelling of mine sequence highlighted large-scale footwall faults and the mining of gold bearing shear veins to be focal structures for seismic energy release between depths of 300 m to the base of mining at 650 m. The integration of seismic data, identification of geological structures and mapping of zones of failed rockmass led to the successful generation of a non linear boundary element model and a seismic hazard strategy. This enabled mine sequences to be assessed daily, monthly and periodically for potential seismic hazards and therefore assigned both economic and personnel risks for the recovery of the ore reserve at the Kundana Underground Operation.
