The development of the Yallourn East Field brown coal open cut has involved the adoption of novel investigational programs into coal qual- ity. For example, weighted average coal property statistics for key proper- ties are determined by using a unique blend of traditional and 3-dimensional geostatistical estimation. Predicted property values are made freely available from the mainframe computer in the form of kriged esti- mates of 60 000 tonne coal blocks. Geostatistical predictions are being incorporated within the Mincom/Intergraph CADD system which is used for mine design. Key properties relating to coal type, moisture, and ash have been evalu- ated to provide the required data for the design and operation of both the open cut and the power stations as well as the briquette plant.

The Kainantu area lies within the composite Scrapland terrane which is composed of Mesozoic metamorphic and intrusive units, overlain by Cenozoic marine sediments, volcanic and intrus-ive units and Quaternary fluvial sedi-ments.Four deformations (Dl, D2, D3, D4) are recognised within the Mesozoic sequences, which consist of greenschist to amphibolite facies schist derived from felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks and pelitic sediments. The second, third and fourth fold events are present in the Cenozoic sequence, and these rocks are broken by thrusts related to northwest trending D3 folds. South-dipping, possibly lystric, normal faults are recognised and may be related to uplift and exposure of the metamorphic rocks as core complexes.Known mineralisation in the area consists of gold and copper skarn deposits, porphyry copper deposits, shear-hosted gold deposits, epithermal vein deposits and gold placer deposits. Over 35 hard rock and 18 gold placer deposits are known within the area. Of significance are the Kathnell shear-hosted auriferous quartz veins; such structurally controlled veins may be more widespread than proposed prev-iously and offer a new exploration target.

After reviewing the various approach es,namely, empirical,analytical.observational and numerical, a logical systematic approach is proposed for the estimation of compressive strength of coal pillars. In this approach first,uniaxial compressive strength of coal in pillars is estimated,taking into account the size effect and the effect of discontinuities. Next,the compressive strength of coal pillars is estimated by determining the stress distribution in the pillar and the Bieniawski strength criterion. The results appear to be compatible to the ones obtained by Wilson's method. The traditional pillar design equations give improper answers for deep workings.

Tin mineralisation occurs at Renison Bell, near Zeehan in Tasmania, as a group of cassiterite-bearing massive pyrrhotite bodies in Cambrian sedimentary rocks. Mineralising fluids from the underlying Pine Hill Granite have replaced carbonate rocks with massive sulphides and cassiterite. The discrete blocks of massive pyrrhotite have high density and high magnetic susceptibility contrasts with the comparatively barren country rock. They are strongly remanently magnetised and are excellent geophysical targets. A detailed geophysical model of the mine was created from a database comprising 1:2500 scale geological mapping and geological logs of approximately 4000 drill-cores. The model comprises 93 parallel cross-sections, each 1.5 km long, spaced 20 m apart. Each cross-section is comprised of up to 150 polygons which represent all known individual rock types and orebodies. The magnetic response of the model was computed and the residual between the model and the observed response, measured by a low-level helicopter magnetic survey, revealed several anomalies unaccounted for by the model. Drill testing of these anomalies led to the discovery of several hitherto unknown massive sulphide occurrences. Surface gravity data of the mine and surrounding district were enhanced by applying digital terrain corrections. The corrected Bouguer anomaly revealed a hitherto unknown positive anomaly associated with the ore zones of the Renison mine. The gravity anomaly of the model was also computed. Unfortunately, the limited resolution of the observed data prevented the delineation of ore targets. The terrain-corrected Bouguer gravity data were also used to model the shape of the underlying non-magnetic Pine Hill Granite. A computer inversion method was implemented to build a 3D block model of the granite. Results agreed with previous conventional 3D modelling techniques but yielded improved resolution of the granite form. The project involved development of new computer software to build and edit the large and complex 3D geophysical model of the mine and to compute the model's magnetic and gravity responses. Software was also developed to build and compute the gravity response of a 3D block model of the underlying granite.

Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal. Investigations are in progress to develop a computer based scheduling tool capable of simulating the complex operating environment. A review of computer scheduling packages currently available within the State Electricity Commission of Victoria has found limitations making most unsuitable for the task. The type of package found to be most suited is a knowledge based system ('Expert System')capable of operating within a set of rules defined by the user. Work is proceeding on the development of a knowledge base to test the effectiveness of Personal Computer based `Expert Systems'.

The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

Sampling errors result from heterogeneities within the lot under study. Within a rock mass in situ heterogeneity results in the geological nugget effect, which accounts for most of the natural variability. In broken rock, constitution and distribution heterogeneities are important. A major result of the constitution heterogeneity is the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) which is the smallest residual error that can be achieved. It cannot be eliminated, but can be minimised and refl ects the fact that the broken rock sampling process is never completely free of error. Together with other sampling errors, FSE contributes to the total nugget effect. The FSE for a sampling protocol can be evaluated using the so-called Gy equation. Its practical applications to low-grade gold ores have often been unsuccessful due to problems linking the FSE and minimum sampling mass and the defi nition of key parameters such as the liberation diameter. Well-designed sample protocols minimise the total sampling error and hence the nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for all sampling programs whether related to exploration and resource evaluation, metallurgical test sampling, grade control or metallurgical plant sampling. This contribution reviews the relationship between heterogeneity, FSE and nugget effect in gold deposits; and emphasises the need for FSE management throughout the mine value chain.

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300°C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

High purity alumina (HPA) is a processed, premium non-metallurgical alumina product characterised by its purity level ie 99.99 per cent (4N) or 99.999 per cent (5N). The market price, application, and performance of HPA varies widely according to its degree of purity. High purity alumina is a form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with growing use in LED lighting and coating on the ceramic cathode separator sheets in lithium ion batteries. This paper describes a study on producing high purity alumina from feldspar to produce HPA and potash for use as a fertiliser. The project was positive for a number of reasons. High potassium extraction (>99 per cent) was achieved in the alkali leach using sodium hydroxide as the leaching agent and full dissolution of the alkali leach residue was achieved using hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. The potential to produce a high purity alumina product via a complex but promising emerging process was assessed. The potential to extract potassium as potassium sulfate to add value to the project was also demonstrated with the test work.

The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

On 13 October 1993, a shallow earthquake registering 7.1 on the Richter Scale occurred near Tauta in the Finisterre Range of Papua New Guinea (PNG) killing 37 people. The aftershock series lasted three months and resulted in considerable landslide damage that destroyed villages, food gardens and airstrips, and blocked rivers causing catastrophic flooding. These effects have irrevocably altered the form of many of the valleys and rivers draining into the Markham and Ramu valleys.The earthquake occurred in a pilot study area for a landslide hazard mapping project being carried out by the PNG Geological Survey that commen-ced in April 1993. Comparisons made between areas identified as unstable during the study with those damaged by the earthquakes show good correlation.It is concluded that aerial photograph and Landsat TM imagery interpretation can be used with a high degree of confidence to identify potential landslide hazards in mount-ainous terrain. Landslide hazard maps are promoted as a tool for use in the route planning of roads and powerline corridors, as well as for identifying vulnerable communities.

The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

Since that time, production growth has been relatively slow, with declining production in the developed countries and increasing production in some newly developing countries. Since 1970, Western World crude steel production has been static at around 450 million tonnes, with cycles around this level in a 100 million tonnes band.

We as a College of the University of N.S.W. were always proud of the excellent support we received from your Institute members and the close association that existed between our organisations. Now we have matured into the University of Wollongong and have to stand on our own feet, we will need all the support we can get from such bodies as yours to ensure that we are not only producing graduates but are also playing a vital role in the community. Although there is no planning for a school of Mining Engineering in the near future, we do look forward to this being a viable proposition eventually and we will then be able to offer to your Institute wider facilities for your activities and ones which will embrace both the Mining and Metallurgy phases. Thank you Mr. President.

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

In 2014, Arrium completed an optimisation program on its magnetite concentrator, enabling a reduction in the overall cost base of producing concentrate through an increased ability to treat a wider range of ore types, previously considered waste. The development was the culmination of four years of work, conducted in house by Arrium’s mining development group. The overall intent of the plant design focused on improving the concentrator’s ability to treat a wider range of magnetite ore types. Metallurgical analysis of these feed ore groups outlined a need for more grinding power if production quality was to be maintained and throughput increased. As such, a tertiary grinding circuit was designed which, alongside the rectification of key operational bottlenecks, would allow the plant to continue to produce concentrate at the required specification and rate. The technology chosen for the tertiary grinding application was the XT IsaMillTM, which is known for efficient fine grinding when compared to conventional ball milling. The transfer sizes between the existing comminution circuits were coarsened, allowed for the treatment of different ores at the required rates. The optimisation project was successfully completed in February 2014 after a three month commissioning phase. Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will comprise 2.5 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels and 900 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The hydrogeology of the area is complex with perched aquifers in compressible soils, cascading water levels in fractured rock aquifers, and discontinuous higher permeability units resulting in artesian water levels and groundwater springs.Numerical groundwater modelling was undertaken to assess the potential effects of tunnel construction and long-term operation on the groundwater system; the magnitude and extent of changes in groundwater level and the resulting potential for settlement, buoyancy effects, contaminant migration and adverse effects on creek base flow. Modelling also provides inputs to tunnel design such as groundwater seepage volumes and water pressures.The driven tunnel will be ‘undrained’ long-term so potential effects on the groundwater system are limited to short-term dewatering during construction. Significant project time and cost savings can be made if the portal areas are permanently ‘drained’, but this means potential effects are greatest in the long term condition.This paper summarises the investigations, implications of the complex hydrogeological setting on tunnel design and environmental assessments, and groundwater modelling undertaken during the planning stage of this project. The groundwater modelling has been used to incorporate mitigation options in tunnel design and construction sequencing; a comprehensive monitoring program will be used to trigger appropriate responses should effects differ from those predicted.
