The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. Finally, a solution to define the value that can be derived from reconciliation is described, detailing how cross-functional personnel meet monthly to review results and implement actions that are tracked in terms of value creation.CITATION:Morley, C and Arvidson, H, 2017. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor is a device, which utilises a high intensity cyanidation process to achieve very high, usually near total, recovery of gold from gravity concentrates. The process utilises a fluidised bed and a chemical oxidant to enhance the gold dissolution kinetics to the point where the bulk of the dissolution occurs in a few hours. For convenience and security, most plants operate a 24-hour turn around. The product from the process is in the form of cathode gold ready for smelting by traditional means. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor performs a two-fold role. Firstly it increases gravity gold production, leading to a decreased CIP feed grade. Secondly, it removes slow leaching components from the plant leaching circuit. This two fold benefit leads to the following efficiencies: enhancement of the dissolution kinetics; enhancement of the adsorption kinetics; reduction of the gold load reporting to the carbon; a significant reduction of the ægold in circuitÆ lockup; and removal of slow leaching entities which can also result in a lowering of the required cyanide concentrations in the leaching circuit and a subsequent reduction in overall cyanide consumption. The above benefits are discussed in this paper, with a particular focus on the ConSep ACACIA ReactorÆs role in removing slow leaching components, with data generated over a 21-month period. Improvement in overall plant recovery via removal of slow leaching gold species is achieved in two ways. Firstly, some of the slow leaching entities, successfully leached under intensive cyanidation, are not always fully leached under plant conditions. This results in a lowering of the solid tailing. Secondly, the faster leaching kinetics achieved in the plant as a result of the removal of slow leaching entities results in faster and more complete adsorption of the dissolved gold onto activated carbon. This results in a lowering of the solution tailings. The construction and operation of the ConSep ACACIA Reactor is simple. Apart from the reactor body, which is a proprietary design, all components of the system are æoff the shelfÆ or specific to the siteÆs requirements. In operation of the fully automated version, a PLC controls a series of valves and pumps but except for a daily changeover process the only operating component for the bulk of the time is a relatively small solution pump. The process can be totally automated giving the security of a æhands freeÆ concentrate handling process up to the point where the product is presented as cathode gold. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold Australia (formerly Acacia Resources) for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production since February 1999. It has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, as of June 2003 there are eighteen full installations of the processing plant installed at mines owned and/or managed by Anglogold, Newmont, Placer Dome, Independence (formerly Lonrho), Sons of Gwalia and Harmony.

Three well-known copper and gold deposits in northern Luzon, Philippines are located in the Mankayan Mineral District. These are the Lepanto Copper-Gold Deposit, the Far Southeast Porphyry Copper Deposit and the newly discovered Victoria Gold Deposit. The latter discovery led LCMC to shift from a predominantly copper mine to a gold mine. The pre-Eocene Lepanto basement andesite and the middle Miocene Balili volcaniclastic sequence underlie the Mankayan Mineral District. They are intruded by tonalitic to gabbroic Bagon Intrusive followed by diorite-quartz diorite intrusions. Diatreme emplacement of late Miocene-early Pliocene Imbanguila dacite pyroclastics and porphyries took place much later. Faults in the district mostly form a conjugate fracture pattern dominated by north and northwest trending shears, east-west trending extensional fractures and few north-south trending fissures. Victoria is an epithermal gold-base metal rich quartz vein deposit. The veins occur along tensional structures and it is common to observe crustiform and banded features among the sulphides and gangue minerals. It is an open space infilling type of mineralisation. The Victoria vein systems are divided into zones based on continuity. In each zone are major veins and associated spits. Dacite pyroclastics and porphyries predominantly host the major veins with a few narrow veins hosted by the Balili volcaniclastics and the Lepanto metavolcanics. The veins generally trend east-northeast with 75 - 80 dips towards the south. The longest vein can be traced fairly continuously for a horizontal distance of about 600 metres. The vertical persistence of major veins exposed on three level drives has a range of 150 metres and can reach as much as 400 metres based on drill hole intercepts. The vein widths vary from two to eight metres. Right lateral movements of either the NW or NE shear faults could have produced the east trending tensional fractures. The development of ore shoot patterns was recognised and has been helpful to the mining operations. Cymoid loops with defined pinch and swell features are noted both laterally and vertically. Complementing the structural pattern is the distribution of gold values along veins where lateral and vertical continuity is also observed. Gold is associated with quartz, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. In relatively high gold zones, the abundant sulphides are sphalerite and galena. In relatively high copper zones, there is an abundance of chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite. Galena is always associated with sphalerite but less in abundance. Chalcopyrite occurs either as separate bands from or associated with sphalerite-galena. Chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite appears contemporaneous with sphalerite and galena but in some portions the former cuts the latter sulphides. The predominant gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and gypsum. Rhodochrosite is the predominant carbonate gangue. Few sulphides are found in the carbonates. Gypsum (anhydrite) is found cross-cutting early mineralisation. It carries very few sulphides. The alteration halos around veins are relatively narrow. In an outward sequence, the silicic alteration occurs very near the veins, followed by sericitic-argillic alteration then to propylitic zones. It is also common to observe veins bounded by propylitic alteration. Preliminary paragenetic studies show apparent three stages of mineralisation, the early-quartz (-gold) stage followed by a carbonate stage and a late-gypsum stage. The abundance of base metals relatively decreases towards the gypsum stage. The Victoria gold deposit could have some genetic associations with the Lepanto Cu-Au deposit and probably indirectly with the FSE porphyry system. It is relatively apparent that the Victoria quartz-gold-base metal veins could have occurred similarly as the quartz-gold roots overprinting the Lepanto enargite mineralisation. This overprinting signifies the waning stages of the entire hydrothermal system.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

Fluor, together with our clients, has yielded significant reductions in the total cost of mining projects by employing a systematic and methodical process of cost reduction. This paper outlines this structured approach to reducing the total cost of projects through the gathering of information, the evaluation of the zero base design, and the development of the execution strategy for the project in the study phase.Over the recent iron ore boom the cost of growth projects escalated rapidly due to a variety of factors including the engineering cost of re-designing facilities, construction in remote areas and an increase in the ‘perceived’ capital requirements for maintainable and operable facilities.Fluor has made strategic steps towards safely reducing the capital intensity of projects, by working with clients to develop zero base designs which utilise the minimum technical requirements in order to meet the function of the plant and then add cost for safety, maintenance and operability only where clearly justified.This paper has set forth a structured three phased approach to focus the team on reducing capital cost while maintaining a low increase in engineering effort.The initial ‘gather’ phase focuses the team on acquiring information and identifying decisions that will need to be made so that the team can prioritise and focus the attention on areas that will provide the greatest benefit. Within this phase the identification of zero base design requirements, review of lessons learnt and analysis of capital cost levers, allows the team to identify the key decisions on the project that will affect the capital cost.In the subsequent ‘evaluation’ phase the team established the zero base design, using the hierarchy of cost reduction as a guide to focusing the team’s attention on high yielding cost saving opportunities.In the final phase the team develops the execution strategy which will yield the least cost using strategies and tools such as modularisation, standardisation, replication, strategic sourcing and 3D design.CITATION:Merrells, J, 2017. The train haulage system being designed for PT Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) will be located within the mine at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level on the west side of the island of Papua, Indonesia. The developing block cave is beneath the active Grasberg Open Pit and will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing plants. The design entails 28 km of rail and 119 ore chutes, which will be brought online over the course of ten years.The train haulage system will be driverless and fully automated. Sequentially, the system includes remote controlled rock breakers at the top of the chute grizzlies, followed by remote controlled chute loading of the trains, then autonomous train haulage and autonomous unloading. An overhead catenary system (OCS) will power the locomotives, which are equipped with on-board batteries to drive through the loading and unloading sections. Service locomotives with drivers move material-laden freight cars in and out of the service shaft, destined for workshops, the magazine and batch plants. Service locomotives are also used for haulage level maintenance. Highly reliable and redundant control and communications systems are required to manage 12 trains in simultaneous operation.This paper provides an overview of the train haulage system’s technical complexities and the associated support systems interactions. Lightning Ridge, Australia, is the largest opal producing area in the world. Most opal is mined from shallow underground mines by individuals or small partnerships with the industry having been protected from large-scale development to date. The safety performance of opal mining has lagged both general mining industry standards and community expectations. The application of geotechnical analysis to the opal fields has the potential to considerably reduce injuries and fatalities. With consideration of the local culture, preliminary geotechnical analysis has been applied to some current methods of work utilised at Lightning Ridge. Practical solutions have been advocated and are presented in this paper. Improvements to safety generated by these practical solutions indicate that further geotechnical research at Lightning Ridge is warranted and would be beneficial.

Water quality standards for some of the substances likely to be discharged to natural waters by the mining industry are discussed. After briefly examining how uses of water can be affected by discharges, standards for suspended solids and turbidity, pH, and toxic materials are considered. Heavy metals are examined in some detail because of recent public concern regarding their discharge. Caution is given in connection with their analysis at the very low concentrations required for management of natural waters. Finally, the issues of what constitutes a water right concentration compliance breach, and the appropriateness of biological monitoring as a condition on a water right are raised.

The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

Core samples, which were collected by the author from the Busang prospect, East Kalimantan, reflect a progressive evolution of a large magmatic-related hydrothermal system that is comparable to that encountered in many similar systems elsewhere in the Pacific region. The initial, localized deposition of sheeted porphyry quartz-molybdenite veins took place at high temperatures and fluid salinities, and at relatively deep levels. This was followed by an extensive phase of phyllic (sericite-quartz-pyrite ¦ tourmaline-apatite) wallrock replacement and vein formation. Propylitic (epidote-chlorite-carbonate-quartz) alteration was formed marginal to the phyllic assemblages. These porphyry-related events were centred in the Southeast Zone, and are probably associated with the emplacement of a felsic intrusion at depth. This event contributed only trace gold to the system. The early stages of hydrothermal activity were followed by an episode of quartz (¦ adularia) û carbonate û base metal sulfide veining, which was accompanied by argillic (illitic-kaolin clay) wallrock alteration. This event was sulfide-rich in the Central Zone and carbonate-dominated in the Southeast Zone. Gold mineralisation was observed in Central Zone drillcore to be associated with both sulfide, as well as carbonate, deposition. A final stage of epithermal-style quartz ¦ stibnite û realgar veins are, in the Central Zone, locally gold-bearing. The latter two events are interpreted to be associated with the late-stage exsolution of metal-bearing brines from the felsic intrusion that formed the earlier porphyry quartz-molybdenite veins and widespread phyllic-propylitic alteration.

This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

The gold province of Otago occupies an area of upwarped basement, the Otago Schist, comprising predominantly quartzofeldspathic and volcanogenic metasediments. This assemblage is the product of collisional tectonic deformation and associated metamorphism, mainly to lower greenschist facies, during the Rangitata Orogeny (200-100 Ma). Historically this region has produced 240 tonnes of gold, 4% (10 t.) of which was from the mining of Cretaceous goldquartz mineralised vein systems. Auriferous vein systems in the Otago Schist are mainly hosted within NW trending normal fault-fracture arrays, however NW trending reverse fault-hosted vein systems also occur. We propose that the Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary Otago Schist structure represents a regional anticlinorium containing flexural folds of at least two wavelengths. The anticlinorium structure has been quantified by determining variations in angular discordance between schistosity and the Otago Peneplain, a Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary erosion surface covering most of the Otago district. A structural model for the evolution of the post-collisional anticlinorium requires the cooling surficial zone (carapace) of a retrograding metamorphic belt to behave as an elastic lid. Erosion of topographic load on the carapace drove isostatic uplift, which was greatest in the tectonically thickened core of the orogen. In this way differential uplift produced flexural deformation in the elastic carapace, expressed as a large scale arching of the orogenic belt. Flexure created tangential longitudinal strains in the outer-arc, leading to extension and the formation of mineralised normal faults. These structures are separated by a neutral surface from shortening and associated mineralised reverse faults in the inner-arc. Our structural model predicts that the distribution of auriferous lodes should be localised about zones of maximum flexural curvature, where the tangential longitudinal strains are highest. As a result, NW-SE hinge regions separating schistosity dip domains in the Otago gold province may have new found significance as potential exploration targets.

Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.
