A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. ORIGINALLY, mining machines were actuated by purely mechanical mechanisms comprising cams, levers and gear trains, which became more and more complex as demands were made for additional operations that would increase mine tonnage. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are now literally the heart of the mining machine. During World War No. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Contamination of Oil Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the, proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Bulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives, will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. In a paper by Abrahamson and Alexander concerning a series of correlations between electronic structure and property changes, it was hypothesized that each solute atom in a dilute solution had a characteristic volume of solvent atoms over which some form of electronic interaction occurred. From this description it is possible to picture the solute atoms as occurring in an ordered array for the most efficient arrangement. A recent review article2 has shown that some form of anomaly exists for a whole series of properties when dilute additions of tungsten are made to iron, of. Fig. 1. Any mechanism to fit one property must also be amenable to mechanisms for the other properties. The possibility of some structural change in this region appears to offer the best hope. The system chosen for investigation was the iron tungsten system. Zone-refined iron with zone-leveled tungsten additions were supplied by Materials Research Corp. as 3/8-in.-diam bars. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the structure. One-quarter inch specimens of each alloy were cold-rolled to 10-mil sheets, cleaned, punched to electron-microscope specimen-holder size, and annealed in vacuum for 2 hr at 800°C and 2 hr at 700°C followed by a furnace cool. The specimens were attached to a platinum wire and the specimen edge and wire were painted prior to thinning in a solution of 10 pct perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid. It was believed that if ordering were present due to electronic interactions the polishing procedure chosen would provide a simultaneous combination of chemical attack and electropolishing to exhibit the ordered structure. The chemical attack would be expected to penetrate those areas equidistant from the tungsten atoms, while the electropolishing would serve to "plane off" the volumes where the chemical attack had taken place. If one of the ordered tungsten planes were parallel to the specimen face at the edge of the thinned hole, a plate or micalike structure would be expected. A typical result of this polishing is shown in Fig. 2. Here a series of plates can be seen lying one upon the other. In several other specimens the plates parallel to the electron beam have been observed, behaving like slices of bread in a loaf. These edge views coupled with moire patterns indicate that the minimum plate thickness is 37 to 42A. This is equivalent to a concentration of 455 at. ppm of W if a simple cubic superlat-tice exists, or one tungsten atom every twelve iron atoms on the ordered plane. It was further noted that the base iron exhibited no signs of platelike structure. As the concentrations increased above 100 at. ppm W the amount of plate material increased. MINING, which is at least twenty centuries old, was at first, and long, wholly a practical art. Little more than two centuries have elapsed since the inception of the idea that general education and a knowledge of natural science would be of advantage to those engaged in the mining industry. Though schools of mining began to develop in Europe early in the eighteenth century the concept of educational preparation for technical conduct of the industry was slow in winning general acceptance in the industry itself. John Hays Hammond, in his autobiography,1 recalls that when he sought employment with a mining company after he had graduated from Yale and Freiberg he had to assure its executive, before being even considered for employment, that he did not consider that he had learned anything about mining. This was as late as 1880. Existence in the industry of a prejudice against education of the academic type is perhaps an explanation why inadequate provision has been made by the mining industry for the continuing education of technical employees after they enter employment, although engineering education prior to engaging in industry has now won general acceptance. I am familiar with the existence of "loop" courses for engineering graduates in metallurgical plants, of schemes for giving mining graduates "practical experience," and of the interest in vocational courses for workmen which sprang up in the period of labor shortage during and immediately following World War I (but which quickly died when the depression of 1921 again made experienced workmen available in sufficient supply), having been chairman of a committee appointed by the Mineral Industry Education Division to make a survey of existing provisions for post-employment training for engineers in our industry. The results of that survey, reported elsewhere, clearly indicate that it is inadequate as to amount; the aim of this paper is to present evidence for belief that it is also inadequate in quality. To avoid becoming too involved, no reference will be made here to post-employment vocational training for workmen, which is a subject differing so much from post-employment education for engineers as to require separate treatment. Neither will postgraduate education for metallurgical engineers be discussed, because a distinction must then be made between training for research work and for plant operation, whereas mining engineers engage almost exclusively in operations. Since the situation in the coal-mining industry has been discussed at several recent meetings, that also will be passed over, and what follows should be taken as a discussion applying exclusively to the metal-mining industry. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT In the operations field (both in mining and metallurgy) the work to which a beginner is assigned is seldom closely related to previous academic education. BY the beginning of 1945 the output of petroleum products for war had reached a volume and a rate of growth which practically assured all requirements so long as war continued. The programs for making gasoline, lubricating oils of required quality, toluene for T.N.T., and chemicals for manufacture of synthetic rubber, as well as numerous other lesser petroleum products, were all well in hand, and unless catastrophic developments occurred there was no doubt of the ability of the industry to meet all demands. The end of the fighting found the refining industry working at top capacity on war commodities, but also in position to convert quickly into peacetime civilian production. 100-octane Aviation Gasoline Production of the vital 100-octane aviation gasoline, starting with approximately 44,000- bbl. daily capacity at our entry into the war, reached a top of 525,000 bbl. a day in the United States by the end of hostilities. With 75,- bbl. from other Allied sources, the grand total was 600,000 bbl., or 25,000,000 gal. each 24 hr. available to the armed forces had fighting continued. At times it was a close race between requirements and production, but never were any important military operations involving the use of high-octane aviation gasoline held up or delayed for lack of sufficient output of such material. The undivided effort of the entire refining industry in full cooperation with the Government made this record possible. Little diminution in output followed the German surrender on May 7. Plans called for a correspondingly greater activity for the Japanese war and possibly for well into 1946. But when the Japanese sued for peace on Aug. 10 most contracts were quickly canceled. Substantial stocks, reputed to be somewhere between 20,000,000 to 30,000,000 bbl., built up largely between V-E and V-J day pending organization of the larger Japanese war program envisaged after Germany gave up, were in the Government's hands in this country, in addition to working stocks in the war areas. Toluene and Lubricating Oil Requirements for toluene for T.N.T. increased rapidly as bombing speeded UP with increasing control of the air by the Allies in Europe and Asia. Production in excess of T.N.T. requirements which had been going into 1000-Octane aviation fuel blending during 1943 and 1944 was again drawn into explosive manufacture early in 1945. In anticipation of the war continuing into 1946, two new plants were ordered constructed, the decision being announced in April, plans calling for one of them to get into production about the end of 1945, the other in the first quarter of 1946. At first glance this paper may seem unique among those comprising this symposium on designing for powder metallurgy, since it is evidently concerned with everything but Powder metallurgy. This paradox mill be at once resolved, however, when the real Purpose of the symposium meeting is understood—to present factually and objectively the things that can and cannot he done with powder-metallurgy methods, and especially to set forth with brutal frankness the limitations of Powder metallurgy, so that costly over-enthusiasm and misapplication may be prevented. Since much of powder metallurgy's future development (and many of its present disappointments) has been in competition with other and long-established methods of fabricating parts, it is easy to see that its true competitive possibilities in any given case cannot be accurately appraised without rudimentary knowledge of what the competition can do. This paper, therefore, presents a few reminders of things you all know—a background to be kept in mind as you examine the data on each of their specialties given by the authors of the papers that follow. From the standpoint of the design engineer powder metallurgy is often in Competition with one or more of the following: sand casting, die casting, permanent-mold casting, precision investment casting, ma- chined bar stock, screw-machine parts, cold-heading, drop-forging, and stamping and drawing. We will here briefly discuss each of these individually, and set forth so, rough (and therefore dangerous) generalizations about its competitive position, especially with respect to powder metallurgy. Sand Casting Sand-casting of small parts is sometimes an inexpensive method of manufacture, for its raw-material costs (i,e., for gray iron) are the lowest of the various methods and it involves the use of no tools and dies of jewelry quality. its design flexibility— that is, the ability to make complicated, cored and undercut parts in one piece—is about the highest of the competing processes and in this respect it can do many things that are impossible by powder metallurgy. For small castings its production rates may be higher, by using multi-impression molds, than can be achieved with parts of the same size by powder metallurgy. But its labor charges for melting, pouring, patternmaking and molding are comparatively high and the waste it entails in gates and risers is always considerable. Tolerances of sand castings are wide (+1/6 to 1/32 in- per in.) and where precision approaching that of powder metallurgy is required sand castings must be machined to final size, thus increasing their cost. Steel sand castings are more expensive and less precise than iron, and nonferrous the most costly of all.

THE function of this paper is to present certain results based on the fact that the strain energy arising from the solution of out-of-size solute atoms into the solid matrix is free energy and not internal energy, and that this strain energy is almost wholly shear strain energy as Zener1 pointed out. One natural consequence of this fact is an expression for the excess entropy of mixing due to the strain energy. Also, a derivation of the integral molar free energy of mixing partitioned to strain energy will be made using the model of Lawson2 and thermodynamics. This derivation has the advantage of showing in a simple way the assumptions involved in Lawson's treatment. The excess entropy of mixing partitioned to strain energy can be derived in two ways. The first way makes use of the fact that the strain energy is almost wholly in the form of shear strain energy. In this case, as Zener1 pointed out, the change in entropy due to the addition of shear strain energy is to a first approximation given by ?S/?? p,T = - ?lnµ/?T p,? Hence, the excess entropy of mixing partitioned to strain energy will be given by Sx ? = ?S/?? p,T Gx ? = - ?lnµ/?T p,? Zener,1 as well as others, has pointed out that the shear strain energy stored in a compressible isotropic solid due to the insertion of an off-size incompres-sible sphere into a spherical hole in the solid, is approximately given by 2/3 µ/O (O°I - O)2 where a is the volume of spherical hole and no , is the volume of sphere. If we now consider the introduction of one mol of such spheres into an infinite volume of solid, then the relative partial molar free energy excess due to strain energy alone is GM ? = 2/3 µ/v (v ° 1 - v)2 where v is the molar volume of solvent and v°1, is the molar volume of pure solute type 1. Let us consider that these spheres are the two types of atoms in a binary solution, then there will be a similar relation for solute 2. Pfleider, University of Minnesota I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. R. H. Merrill, U. S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Federal Center The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability. G. A. Leonards, Purdue University I was interested in Mr. Lane's observations concerning the correspondence between rate of slide movement with rise of reservoir. Perhaps the most interesting feature is that the rate of movement at the time the rock slope failed was less than the rate at an earlier time when it did not fail. This is difficult to explain from current slope stability theory. K. S. Lane, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers I believe that reduced rate of movement is the result of the progressive type of failure, such as described by Patton and Deere. which occurs along the sliding surfaces. It is difficult to analytically define the progressive failure condition for inclusion in slope stability conditions, but its existence should be recognized in design. We should also realize that many apparently stable slopes undoubtedly contain overstressed regions. To design a slope with no overstressed region would be uneconomical and conservative. D. H. Deere I would pose the question-"What is the meaning of a factor of safety of one?" We were involved in the design of a large, irregularly shaped, underground cavity with an unsupported span of several hundreds of feet. Tests on rock specimens indicated a strength of 1300 lb per sq in. The RQD would have been between 90 to 100 percent indicating excellent structural continuity. In-situ stress determinations indicated an approximately hydrostatic state of stress at a level of 1400 lb per sq in. Calculation of stress concentrations at the walls indicated that the stresses there would be about 3000 to 4000 lb per sq in. Admittedly the rock is in a confined condition everywhere except at the very skin of the wall and the rock walls would thus on the average be somewhat stronger. Allowing for the effect of restraint the factor of safety was found to be less than 0.5 over a region several feet into the wall. Construction was started, using rockbolts only to support the walls. Within the last ten years Kentucky has become celebrated for its low-sulfur bituminous coals. Prior to this time, many investigators had discnvered the abundance of this coal but the fact was unknown to the general public until the last extension of Kentucky's mountain railroads' was completed. The coals of. Kentucky are, broadly, separated into two geographic units—the eastern and the western coal fields. On a basis of their sulfur content these coal fields fall into three units, which are indicated on the accompanying map, by numbers, 1, 2, and 3. The area marked 1, the very southeastern part of the state, shows the lowest sulfur, all coals being averaged. In this field the maximum is 1.04 per cent. and the minimum as low as 0.68 per cent.—both averages and not individual analyses, which would of course show much greater variation. Included in this group are the following counties: Lawrence, 0.87 per cent.; Martin, 0.75 per cent.; Johnson, 0.73 per cent.; Magoffin, 0.87 per cent.; Floyd, 0.88 per cent.; Pike, 0.68 per cent.; Knott, 1.04 per cent.; Perry, 0.77 per cent.; Letcher, 0.80 per cent.; Leslie, 0.70 per cent.; Harlan, 0.79 per cent.; Knox, 0.86 per cent.; and Bell, 0.92 per cent. The total average sulfur content for these thirteen counties is 0.82 per cent. Bordering the restricted low-sulfur field of eastern Kentucky is the No. 2 belt (slightly darker), 'which is commonly known as the western border of the eastern coal field. Here the maximum sulfur is 2.91 per cent. and the minimum 1.05 per cent. Again these are averages and not individual analyses. The counties in this group are: Greenup, 2.60 per • cent.; Boyd, 1.67 per cent.; Carter, 1.07 per cent.; Morgan, 1.40 per cent.; Wolfe, 1.83 per cent.; Lee, 2.93 per cent.; Breathitt, 1.85 per cent.; Owsley, 1.09 per cent.; Jackson, 1.06 per cent.; Rockcastle, 2.30 per cent.; Clay, 1.09 per cent.; Laurel, 1.08 per cent.; Pulaski, 2.24 per cent.; Whitley, 1.05 per cent.; McCreary, 1.50 per cent.; and Wayne. The sulfur percentage average for this area including fifteen important counties is 1.65 per cent. In the western Kentucky field, the great increase in the percentage of sulfur is at once apparent. Ohio County with 3.78 per cent. is the highest and Hancock with 2.87 per cent. is the lowest. Some ten years ago the writer1 made a survey of college catalogues to determine what sort of training geologists were receiving in basic sciences. In the light of this compilation and subsequent experience, he made the statement at the 1939 meeting of the Institute that apparently only in schools offering a curriculum in geological engineering or in the geological option of mining engineering curricula could geologists hope to receive the training advocated by Hubbeet.2 In the former study, schools of engineering were excluded because the preparation was known beforehand. The present study aims to consider engineering schools in an effort to determine not only what basic studies are required but what use is made of them in geological courses of the third and fourth years. The present study combined the method of consulting catalogues with a questionnaire. Letters were mailed to officials responsible for supervision of mineral industries curricula requesting information On' (I) the extent to which the engineering preparation of the first two years is actually used in the work of the last two; (2) the extent to which the engineering of the last two years is used in courses in geological engineering or geology; and (3) whether geologists or geological engineers teach descriptively or analytically. Both methods of securing information are open to criticism; the former on the basis of the incomplete information supplied by university catalogues concerning prerequisites and curricula and the latter on the ground that the questions may be phrased poorly or given insufficient consideration by replying officials. Fifty-six questionnaires were mailed and 39 (70 per cent) replies were received. Of the replies, 6 (11.3 per cent) were from colleges of liberal arts unconnected with engineering schools, 11 (20 per cent) were from schools having curricula in geological engineering and 22 (39 per cent) were from departments of mining engineering. The number of replies and their distribution were satisfactory in spite of the receipt of only six from liberal arts colleges. It should be understood that the universities of which the catalogues were examined were not necessarily the same in both compilations. No departments that are admittedly or known to be acting solely as service departments were recorded in the second study. Table I shows that all professional schools require mathematics through calculus, whereas only 7 per cent of the liberal arts curricula expect the same level of preparation; only 73 per cent require trigonometry and 40 per cent college "algebra. The proportion of geological engineering curricula requiring differential equations is higher than mining. All of the engineering schools require general and analytical chemistry, whereas only 77 per cent of liberal arts curricula require general and 18 per cent analytical. THERMODYNAMIC calculations indicate that boron is a better deoxidizer than silicon but probably is not quite as effective as aluminum. Boron should, therefore, be readily oxidized out of the open-hearth bath, which implies that it is not recovered in significant concentration from any scrap charged; also that, if added in the ladle, it tends to oxidize out during teeming unless protected by the presence of a. better deoxidizing agent. These conclusions do not apply to liquid cast iron, in which the oxygen content is much lower than in liquid steel. The possibility of conserving certain strategic alloying elements widely used in steelmaking, notably manganeie, chromium and molybdenum, by the use of boron, which in small concentration appears to be extraordinarily effective in promoting hardenability, raises a question as to what extent any boron present in the scrap charged into the open hearth is oxidized out during melting and subsequent refining. This question is significant because the optimum concentration of boron in the finished steel, which is fairly critical, would be very difficult to attain if the boron in the charge were largely retained in the metal. Moreover, unless boron is substantially eliminated in the open-hearth process its use on a large scale would eventually make it impossible to produce boron-free steel except by restricting the charge to virgin material. There is at present, unfortunately, virtually no satisfactory direct evidence to provide an answer to this question; but there are indications from practice that boron is oxidized out in the open hearth in the production of medium or low-carbon steel, although it may be retained if the carbon content remains fairly high; that is, if the oxygen is kept fairly low. In the absence of direct data, it is necessary to rely upon the indications of indirect evidence, the best approach now available being a thermodynamic calculation of the deoxidizing power of boron in liquid steel by the general method used so successfully by Chipman1 in his study of the reactions in the open-hearth process. The thermal data for boron, upon which such a calculation must be based, are reasonably satisfactory; the only quantities not directly determined are the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid steel, and the activity coefficient of B203 in an open-hearth slag; but these values may be estimated with ample accuracy. The results of this calculation, which is presented later, are given in Table I, together with corresponding data for other deoxidizing elements. (written discussion).-When a business concern hires an office boy, it takes on the first bright-appearing young chap to apply and pays him the prevailing rate of wages. One of the chief tasks the .office boy is supposed to be competent to perform, is to clean out the office. The manager of the business is highly competent in many lines, but for some reason lacks the ability to keep the office clean. To the steel man, it would seem that manganese is the office boy, and it is purchased just as found and offered to the purchasing agent. The steel mill is competent to perform many functions on a grand scale and with wonderful efficiency, but it is unable to make real steel. It is the function of the office boy, manganese, to do this. It is open to serious doubt if steel mill operators have ever taken seriously the metallurgy of the preparation of crude manganese. It has merely been found that some usable crude manganese may be obtained by running certain manganese ores through an iron furnace when not busy on anything else, or remote from iron ore, or with a lining that is about gone. It is, however, an entirely unwarranted assumption that the metallurgy of manganese has been worked out, or that the supplies of usable raw ore must be limited to materials of some specified analysis. There was a time when ores of copper, lead and zinc, for example, had to be rich and of specified analysis, to be usable, but the commercial raw materials of today bear little resemblance to such ores of the past. The discussions of manganese that I have seen are based on the assumption that the metallurgy of manganese is fully established and that the only usable manganese raw materials are of the kind used today. These discussions contain another error, not so much of statement, but of implication-that the tonnages of manganese materials in the United States are so much in this state and so much in that. When it requires a period of years and the expenditure of millions of dollars for a competent mining company to explore thoroughly a few acres of mining ground, is it not absurd to say that there are so many hundred tons of manganese ore in a certain state? This fact is not apt to be known fully in 10,000, years. I do not charge the mining engineers. who are on record, of making misstatements, because they merely say that so much

DEVELOPMENT of the cement industry in Mexico began some 40 years ago. It has gradually reached great importance in the economic life of the country and has contributed greatly to the technical and economical advances which have been so noteworthy, particularly during the last 15 years. From a modest start, the industry now comprises 18 cement-producing plants having a potential annual capacity of approximately 14 million bbl. About half the plants were built and equipped with second-hand machinery during the last world war when no new machinery could be procured. They will hardly attain full production before being modernized and reconditioned, a job now under way in several of the plants. At present, the yearly consumption is only about 8 to 9 million bbl but is steadily increasing. This is only a fraction of the cement consumed in the U.S.A., which is about 250 million bbl per year, although on the basis of consumption per capita per year, the figure is 1/3 bbl for Mexico and 1 2/3 bbl for the U.S.A. Cement consumption in Mexico is well above the average of all other Latin American countries, with the exception of the Argentine, and considering the potentialities and undeveloped riches of Mexico, the road construction and irrigation works, it is fair to assume that the Mexican cement industry will still prosper and expand in spite of temporary setbacks in the future caused by-local events of economic or political nature. Portland cement is manufactured by burning a mixture of raw materials, one of which is mainly composed of calcium carbonates and the other of aluminum silicates. The most typical materials answering this description are limestone and clay, both of which occur in Mexico in many varieties. To be usable for cement manufacture limestone should contain at least 77 to 80 pct calcium carbonate. Lower grade limestone can be used for cement manufacture only if the lime content is increased by the beneficiation process, which has not yet been adopted by the Mexican cement industry. Most of the limestone used by Mexican cement plants has a calcium carbonate content of 90 to 95 pct and therefore requires addition of one or several correction materials. A typical composition of raw mix for cement manufacture is 85 pct limestone and 15 pct shale, clay or volcanic materials. Occasionally it is necessary to add a smaller amount of sand or other siliceous material to increase the silica ratio in the raw mix. Likewise, it is sometimes necessary to add 1 or 2 pct iron ore to facilitate fusion in the kiln and to obtain proper relation between alumina and iron oxide. After calcining and

The total production of oil in Mexico in 1942 was 34,715,547 bbl.; that is, 8,179,254 bbl. less than the amount produced in 1941. The daily average for 1942 was 95,111 bbl., while that for 1941 was I17,520 barrels. The reduction of 22,409 bbl. per day in production was due to a decrease in exports because of the scarcity of tankers. This reduction has affected principally the Northern and Southern districts of the Tampico area; in December the Northern district (Panuco) was producing less than zoo0 bbl. per day with 445 wells shut down and the Southern district (GolJen Lane) less than $000 bbl. per day with 140 wells shut down. Drilling.—During the year 14 wells were drilled in Mexico, of which five were productive. Seven dry holes were drilled in Ebano, Tampico Northern district, in search for new producing fractures; plans are being made to explore this area by means of resistivity measurements. Three producing wells were completed in Poza Rica. Drilling in this important field will continue during 1943 to determine its extension to the west. In the Isthmus of Tehuantepec no wells were completed. Two gas wells were completed in northeastern Mexico. Wildcats.-—Two wildcat wells were completed during the year, to test the extension of the Golden Lane to the south; both were unproductive. In the Isthmus a deeper sand was found in the El Plan field* This discovery has made an important increase in the reserves in this field and will allow an increase in the production of the area during 1943. In December, three exploration wells were being drilled, two in the Tampico area and one in the Isthmus. Operating Technology.— Satisfactory progress has been made in Mexico in the application of petroleum engineering to the development and operation of the oil fields. Mud control is now an established practice and has lessened the number of fishing jobs and has allowed more open hole to be carried than formerly was possible. During 1942 the first effective use was made of determinations of bottom-hole pressure, and other modern production practices such as gun-perforating and squeeze-cementing are being introduced. Plans for 1943 The oil production during 1943 is expected to be slightly larger than that of 1942, especially if tankers are available for exporting crude and refined products. The Government proposes to increase exploration and drilling activities to increase the reserves and potential production of the country; about 50 wells will be drilled during the year, including wildcat wells in northeastern Mexico, Tampico and Isthmus areas and exploitation wells in the Ebano-Panuco, Poza Rica, El Plan and Cuichapa fields. THE development by the U. S. Bureau of Mines of a process for purifying manganese by electrolysis has stimulated interest in manganese alloys. While recent publications have shown some alloys of manganese and copper to possess rather unusual properties, none have included information on tensile properties, which have an important bearing on the usefulness of the alloys. Manganese-copper alloys can be heat-treated, since the single phases that exist at high temperatures may be retained by quenching. According to Persson,1 when quenched alloys containing from about 30 to nearly 100 per cent manganese are reheated, alpha manganese is precipitated (Fig. I). Calculations based on Persson's X-ray data indicate that this decomposition is accompanied by a change in volume of as much as 5 per cent. The reason that this large volume change has not been noted probably is the slow rate at which equilibrium is reached by these alloys. In an investigation on hardening by cold-work and heat-treatment, Dean and Anderson' found that quenched alloys increase in hardness with manganese content and that high-manganese alloys harden very slowly with cold-work, while high-copper alloys harden much more rapidly. Heat-treatment has little effect on manganese-copper alloys containing less than 40 per cent Mn, and affects those alloys containing more than 40 per cent in accordance with their manganese content and heat-treating temperature. Dean and Anderson4 also found that cold-work increased electrical resistance of alloys containing from 50 to 80 per cent Mn, and that heat-treatment of alloys containing from 40 to 96 per cent Mn altered the electrical resistance considerably. Dean, Anderson and Potter5 have shown that the high vibration damping capacity that characterizes manganese-copper alloys containing 40 to 90 per cent Mn is affected by cold-work and heat-treatments. Highest vibration damping capacity at low stresses was obtained by heating for 2 hr. at 450°C. (842°F.) after quenching from solution temperatures. Preparation of Alloys.-The alloys for these tests were melted in a 17-lb. basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace using electrolytic manganese, grade A ingot copper and a 70-30 Cu-Mn master alloy (69.80 per cent Cu, 0.12 Fe, 0.04 Si, 0.006 S, 0.07 C, balance Mn). The manganese was heated slowly to expel excess dissolved gases and melted before the addition of copper. No fluxes or covers were used. The melts were cast in tapered iron molds and the ingots were reduced 90 per cent when forged to ½ -in. rounds. These rods were given 2-hr. solution treatments at temperatures that depended upon the composition (Table I). This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2. In 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temperatures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several particles had become one unit. From this discovery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the application of about 3000 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper produced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H. Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles. Concurrently, the three metallurgists worked on the problem of effecting a complete union of the cathode particles. Adequate washing was all that was needed to free the particles from electrolyte solution and slimes. A press was designed to produce briquettes of the proper porosity and density, and a method was devised of removing surface oxidation from the particles of cathode, by treatment in an atmosphere of deoxidizing gas at an elevated temperature. The temperature was determined at which the surface cleansing and preheating could be done in one operation, and for this a charging and preheating furnace in which there is maintained a positive pressure of deoxidizing gas atmosphere was designed. And finally, a method of feeding the heated briquettes of deoxidized cathode copper into an extrusion press without contamination from the air was evolved. For the final stage, a press was required because not only heat but pressure was required to obtain complete growth of the new crystals between the cathode particles as well as the elimination of all voids or non-coalesced areas. All essential stages of the process are protected by patents or patent applications in the United States and principal foreign countries, and the copper is produced on a commercial scale.

Natural gases under pressure form crystalline hydrates with water. Experimental data are reported on four-phase equilibrium for the methane-propane-water, methanc-pentane-water, and methane-hexane-water systems. Temperatures and pressures for equilibrium between gas, water-rich liquid, hydrocarbon-rich liquid, and hydrate were measured, as well as the percentages of methane and propane in the hydrate. The data indicate that natural gas hydrate behaves as a solid solution and that pentanes and heavier hydrocarbons do not enter into the solid phase. Vapor-solid equilibrium constants are presented that permit the approximation of the conditions for hydrate formation, from the composition of a gas. Introduction Natural gas hydrates have been the object of considerable research in recent years, because of the trouble they have caused in the natural-gas and natural-gasoline industries. Natural gas hydrates are white crystalline compounds of water and gas, which, under pressure, exist at temperatures considerably above the freezing point of water. Because of the relatively high temperatures at which the hydrates exist, they become a nuisance in high-pressure gas operations where water is present, since their formation causes partial or complete plugging of valves and pipes. From a practical standpoint, the trouble incident to hydrate formation has been solved by dehydration of the gas before it enters the plant or pipe line, or by other remedial measures. Extensive work on gas hydrates in the latter part of the nineteenth century, by Villardl and others, gave data on methane hydrate and on ethane hydrate. Schroeder summarized these theoretical studies2 Hammerschmidt3 introduced the information on gas hydrates to the gas industry and Dcaton and Frost4-6 gathered a considerable number of data on the behavior of natural gas hydrates. Recent papers7,8 have extended both the data and the theory of these hydrates. At present, data are available on tem-peraturcs and pressures of hydrate forma. tion for pure methane, ethane, propane, n-butane, methane-ethane mixtures, meth-ane-propane mixtures, methane-butane mixtures, and some Is natural gases, all- in the Presence of excess water. However, up to the Present time no method has been available for predicting the temperature at given pressures or the pressure at given at at which natural gases will form hydrates if hydrates with water.
