The ability of activated charcoal or carbon to adsorb complex metal ions has been recognized for many years, but it wasn't until the late 1940s and early 1950s that attempts were made to employ carbon-In-Pulp or C. I. P. processing to the recovery of gold. Early plants using the process were those at the Golden Cycle in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the Getchell Mine near Golconda, Nevada, and at the Idria Mine in Honduras. Recovery of the carbon from the pulp was done by screening or flotation, and recovery of gold from the carbon was done by burning the carbon (a very difficult task) or by sending it to a smelter. Unfortunately at the time, the price of gold was still fixed at $3-5 per ounce and labor costs were rising to the point where these mines were no longer able to operate. Consequently, C. I. P. treatment was temporarily forgotten. In the early 1970s, however, Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota, were being forced by environmental regulations to discontinue the use of mercury for amalgamation in their 7,500 ton per day plant, and at the same time were encountering high labor costs in the slime circuit of the plant, where over 2,000 tons of slimes were filtered each day in Merrill plate and frame filter presses. Shortly before that, researchers of the United States Bureau of Mines had developed the caustic -cyanide method of stripping gold from activated carbon and an electrolytic cell (now known as the Zadra cell) to recover gold from the carbon strip liquor. Homestake and the United States Bureau of Mines then jointly operated a C. I. P. pilot plant at Lead. Results were immediately favorable and a 2,400 ton per day C. I. P. plant was then built to treat the slime fraction of the Homestake ore. (See Au and Ag Cyanidation Plant Practice, Volume I, SME of AIME, 1975. Later, Homestake built a second plant at Creede, Colorado, to treat the slime fraction of the tailings from a silver-lead flotation plant. Next was Duval Corporation's 3,000 ton per day C. I. THE need for geophysicists to adopt a uniform mode of expressing the electrical resistivity of geological formations has been stressed by Dr. A. S. Eve.1 The present paper is to emphasize the point he raised, to bring the weight of disinterested authority to bear on the matter, and to urge the adoption henceforth, save in exceptional cases, of a standard expression for resistivity; all in the hope that the needed reform will thus actually be brought about. The general definition of the resistivity of a material is the resistance in ohms between two opposite faces of a unit cube of that, material. No account need be taken here of the cases in which the unit volume is not a cube, and the units of length and cross-section are different, encountered principally when dealing with metallic conductors such as wires. The idea of the resistance of a unit volume of earth or rock has found expres-sion in geophysical literature in a number of forms and with a variety of units. Fortunately, the metric system has been adhered to in most cases, so ordinarily the meter or the centimeter, usually the latter, has been the measure chosen. The resistivity is then the resistance of a cube of the given rock, or soil, one centimeter on, an edge. This is far from always being the same thing, however, as the resistance of a cubic centimeter. A long thin wire could contain a cubic centimeter and have a high resistance, whereas the same volume formed into a flat plate would have an entirely different, and quite low, resistance between faces. Con-sequently, it is not proper to express resistivity in ohms per cubic centi-meter, inch, etc., as has been done occasionally by .some writers. In an effort to emphasize the idea of cubic volume, some geophysicists, the writer among them, have used the phrase, ohms per centimeter cubed. This is a graphic way of picturing the measure, but is not in favor among highly qualified authorities. In this connection, an appeal was made to the U. S. Bureau of Standards for advice, and the Director, George K. Burgess, kindly replied in detail as to the practice adopted by his Bureau: ." . .' such expressions as ohms per centimeter cubed' or any similar expressions are objectionable, because they certainly carry the implica-tion that the resistivity is found by dividing ohms resistance by the volume in cubic centimeters." Bethlehem, Pa.-I regret that the author has overlooked the great usefulness of the electric furnace for the melting of ferromanganese in the manufacture of manganese steel. WALTER S. (communication to the Secretary*)-In an article as brief as mine it was not possible to .fully cover the metallurgical field; this accounts for my not mentioning the electric furnace for the melting of ferromanganese in the manufacture of manganese steel, although the advantages of such an apparatus are fully appreciated by me. FREDERICK LAIST, + Anaconda, Mont. (communication to the Sec-retary?).-Manganese steel has proved very serviceable in our plant.. We are using manganese steel for the jaw plates on the 5-' by 15-in. crushers in the concentrator instead of cast-iron jaw plates which we formerly used. The manganese steel wears five times as long as the cast iron. We are also using manganese steel in our 8- by 20-in. crushers. In our primary crushers, which are 12 by 24 in., we still use cast iron because the manganese-steel plates wore unevenly and left shoulders which caused trouble in setting up the crusher. Another reason for preferring cast iron in these crushers is that they grip the ore better on account of wearing of the rougher surface. The surface of the manganese steel becomes polished and large pieces of ore fail to be drawn in. We recently tested 8- by 16-in. manganese-steel elevator buckets working on 2-in. undersize against malleable-iron buckets and found that manganese-steel buckets lasted two and one-half times as long as the malleable-iron buckets. We use manganese-steel screen plates on our 2-in. trommels and have found that they last about five times as long as cast iron. We also used manganese-steel wheels and rails under the 20-deck round table in our slimes-treatment plant. We first used cast-iron rails and wheels and found that these wore badly at the end of two or three weeks, while the life of the manganese steel seemed to be almost indefinite; we never had occasion to change any of the manganese steel rail sections or wheels in the year and nine months that the plant was in operation.

Disintegration of the immediate shale roof in coal mines interferes with ventilation, production, and safety. The effect is seasonal and correlates with high levels of moisture in the intake ventilation air. Disintegration, though not completely understood, is caused by shale dilation and weakening upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Fluctuating moisture conditions are particularly deleterious, but may be at least partially controlled by tempering the air before it is brought to the working places. Disintegration of shale roof is progressive loosening of chunks or slabs or roof shale, which fall to the floor. Bolts are left dangling or are connected to the roof by a column of loose rock. Posts are rendered ineffective. Passage of ventilation air and personnel is restricted by piles of fallen material on the floor. Shale disintegration as it occurs in mine roofs does not appear to have much in common with slaking, such as is measured in slake-durability tests, which results in the failure of certain shales when exposed in embankments or foundations. A two-year program was conducted on behalf of the US Bureau of Mines, incorporating field and laboratory analysis of deterioration. During this study, a. survey was conducted of underground mining operations in the Illinois Basin and Appalachia. In all, 47 mines in six different coal seams were identified as possibly having roof deterioration problems pertinent to the study. Of these, the No. 1 Mine of the Valley Camp Coal Co. near Triadelphia, WV was selected for detailed study. This mine uses conditioning entries, workings where raw intake air is routed before reaching the key haulageways. Deterioration is to be confined to the conditioning chambers. The approach adopted to study the deterioration problem was to measure atmospheric moisture in the mine, determine shale behavior in the laboratory under various moisture conditions, and measure mine roof behavior that could be correlated with atmospheric moisture observations. The following tasks were performed: • Atmospheric baseline data were collected, consisting of airflow measurements, continuous monitoring of the mine and surface atmospheric conditions using a sling psychrometer. • Roof deterioration was documented through measurement of roof convergence (sag), mapping of roof conditions, collection of fallen and rashed material and measurement of roof height increase and photographic logging. An infrared scanner was also tried, but not found useful. • The behavior of shale under various moisture conditions was determined in the lab through tests of shale expansion, natural moisture content, moisture uptake capacity at various humidities, and static (immersion) slaking.

THE occurrence of enormous masses of pure copper has given the mining district of Lake Superior worldwide reputation. The first masses brought from there excited great attention, and directed the notice of the mining world to the few particular mines from which they were taken. It may not now be generally known that nearly all the veins which are worked, and which cut across the trap ridge, contain mass copper, and that large masses are continually being raised from them. The largest continuous mass which has been taken out was probably that from the Minnesota, in 1857, which is variously stated as weighing 420 tons and 470 tons. Its length was about 45 feet, its breadth or height 22 feet, and its greatest thickness 8 feet. All such masses are very irregular and ragged in their form and thickness, thinning out generally from a foot to a few inches, and straggling through the vein until they connect with other large masses. This was the character of a mass found in the Phoenix Mine, one of the oldest on the lake, which mass altogether weighed some 600 tons. But this was really a series of masses more or less connected by strings of metal, yet no one large part of it weighed, singly, over 200 tons. A similar series of masses, weighing about 600 tons, was extracted from the Minnesota. Some of the Phoenix masses were four to five feet thick of solid copper. The Cliff Mine has yielded masses weighing from 100 to 150 tons in one piece. One of 40 tons was taken out this year, besides numerous blocks weighing from 1 to 8 tons. This mine and the Central are now yielding mass copper in abundance. It is, of course, impossible to pick, or drill, or to break out such huge masses of solid metal when they are found, by drifting upon the course of the vein. The method of extraction is as follows The miner picks out or excavates a narrow passage or chamber upon one side of the mass, laying it bare as far as possible over its whole surface. It is usually firmly held by its close union with the vein-stuff, or by its irregular projections above, below, and at the end. If it cannot then be dislodged by levers, the excavation of a chamber is commenced behind the mass, and this excavation is made large enough to receive from 5 to 20 or more kegs of powder. In one

IN an earlier paper by Sims, Moore, and Williams: data were given to show that hydrogen contents of 0.3 relative volume (0.00033 wt pct), existing at the center of 4-in.-square cast-steel coupons, could be removed by aging at 400°F for 125 hr. At the end of that time, complete restoration of normal ductility for the steel was obtained. Replicate specimens of the same steel were aged at room temperature up to 555 days or .18 1/2 months. At the end of that time, the hydrogen content at the center had fallen to 0.13 relative volume or 0.00015 wt pet, but there was no perceptible change in the ductility. On the basis of experience with accelerated aging of 1-in. and 4-in. coupons and room temperature aging of 1-in. coupons, it was predicted that, some time after two years and when the hydrogen content has been reduced to about 0.10 relative volume, there would be some recovery of ductility. One set of three bars remained, and these were held for 1310 days, or more than three years. Then tensile test bars were cut from the center, and these bars were sampled for hydrogen analysis at the time they were broken. The sample specimens were cylinders % in. in diam x 1 1/4 in. in length. The data showed that in this time the average hydrogen content had fallen to 0.096 relative volume or 0.00011 wt pct, and the ductility had increased sharply. Elongation had risen from 10 to 17.3 pct, while reduction of area increased from about 16 to 27.5 pct. On the basis of these data, fig. 1 was drawn to replace fig. 15 of the earlier paper. Extrapolation of the curves of fig. 1 indicates that it would require a period of about 2200 days or approximately six years at room tem- perature to reduce the hydrogen to the minimum value and to recover full ductility in the center of the coupons. The aging process apparently involves the movement of hydrogen from the interior to the surface of the bar and evaporation at the surface. This flux of gas presumably follows some diffusion mechanism, and an effort was made to use the aging data, obtained at room temperature and at 400°F, to calcu-late coefficients of diffusion, in the hope that they might indicate the nature of the diffusion. The conclusion was reached. however. that the data were inadequate for such a purpose.

RECENTLY, cases of coexisting ordered and disordered phase equilibria have been reported among face-centered cubic metals,1"3 but not on body-centered cubic systems.4 McQueen and Kuczynski5 showed a single line as the boundary between ordered solid solution of Fe3Al type and corresponding disordered solution in the Fe-A1 phase diagram based mainly on dilatometric and magnetic measurements. Such a single line would indicate a second or higher order transition. or an absence of coexisting order and disorder. The writer found previously a two-phase equilibrium region at 800°C consisting of ordered and disordered solid solutions of Fe3Si in a matrix of approximately 1-6 wt pct Si (Fe3Si is of 14.3 wt pct Si). A similar two-phase region of ordered and disordered Fe3Al solid solutions might be expected if the similarity between Fe3Si and Fe3Si structures hold true. In the present investigation, a wire of 22 at. pct Al, balance Fe and 0.0513 cm in diameter was subjected to electrical resistivity measurement in vacuum as a function of temperature between 300 and 800°C, see Fig. 1. There was excellent agreement between data taken on heating and on cooling: no hysteresis was observed. The Curie temperature was determined to be 640 °C which agrees with the finding by McQueen and Kuczynski.5 But in addition, there were two transitional points in the resistance-temperature plot at 510oC and 400 "C. The former is thought to be a connection with the transition from disordered state to a coexisting order and disordered equilibrium state; while the latter, from such coexisting state to ordered state. Fig. 2 shows a phase diagram where the suggested two-phase region lies between dotted lines. The solid lines are those of McQueen and Kuczynski.5 Since these authors found only a single-phase boundary between ordered and disordered Fe3 Al, it would seem likely that the dilatometric method used by these authors was not sufficiently sensitive to resolve the ordering reaction into the two-phase boundaries. In addition, their phase diagram conflicts with the statement they make on P. 1 of their paper: "The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3A1 is a first order reaction." The suggestion of coexisting order plus disorder in Fe3A1 must be considered tentative until confirmed by high-temperature X-ray examination. If

THE Getchell mine, a comparatively recent gold discovery, is in the old Potosi mining district, Humboldt County, Nevada. All ore is mined from open pits using Diesel shovels and gasoline trucks. Two types of ore are mined, oxide and sulphide. Oxide ores are siliceous or shaly; sulphide ores either gougy, siliceous or shaly. In mining, the sulphide ore is segregated into hard and gougy ore, because the gouge must be dried before it can be crushed. The oxide ore is not segregated. GENERAL METALLURGY The oxide ore is the leached outcrop that overlies the sulphide ore body. All of the iron and arsenic sulphides found in the sulphide ores have been thoroughly oxidized. The sulphur and arsenic have been leached out while the iron is present as hematite and limonite. The oxide ore is amenable to direct cyanidation, and although no visible free gold is present it is released at a comparatively coarse grind. The sulphide ore is more refractory, since the gold is all of micron size and some of it is locked in fine sulphides. It has been established microscopically that the free gold is coated with an impervious shell, which is probably some form of iron compound. The sulphide ores contain from 1.5 to 2 per cent of arsenic, which is present as orpiment and realgar with minor amounts of arsenopyrite. The orpiment and realgar are of a later mineralization than the gold and are barren. Roasting and washing of the sulphide ore prior to cyanidation is necessary to eliminate the arsenic, to alter the gold coating from an insoluble form to a soluble form, and to release the gold associated with the fine sulphides. Washing the ground calcine in weak sulphuric acid, trona, or hot water are beneficial in the order named, but to date the water is the best from an economic standpoint. Metallurgical tests as well as plant practice indicate that a certain amount of gold cannot be recovered even by going beyond economic practices. On this basis metallurgical results are viewed in the light of an optimum tailing rather than a percentage of extraction. MILLING PRACTICE Crushing (Fig. 1).-There are three primary ore bins, one each for oxide ore, gougy sulphide ore, and hard sulphide ore. In front of each bin a substantial yard is maintained, which makes it possible to stockpile 2500 tons of oxidized ore, 1000 tons of hard sulphide ore, and 1000 tons of gougy sulphide ore. I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelgang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the mem¬bers, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. A. E. ROSS*—Mr. Armstrong in his paper stated that they had experienced considerable difficulty in drilling the quartz-feldspar intergrowths. The dia-mor~d loss was excessive and the diamond bits polished quite rapidly. Mr. Davidson, who presented the paper, stated that bortx stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used in the bits on this job. I would like to suggest the use of bits employing stones in the range of 60 to 100 per carat, an average of possibly 80 per carat. If these stones had been used the bits might have lasted longer and not polished so quickly. As a basis for this suggestion I would like to point out that in northern New York State we had at least two examples where bits employing stones in the range of 80 per carat had solved a difficult problem. Bits set with stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used previously and had failed. With the finer stones, the cost per foot of drilling decreased material1y. It should also be noted from a technical standpoint that the smaller stones require higher drilling speeds than the larger stones. Greater pressures are not normally necessary, and it is the higher speed which seems to be the major factor of importance. It should also be noted that the finer stones afford a greater number or cutting surfaces for the same carat weight in a bit. Then too, the smaller stones, by virtue of their size, serve as sharper cutting edges than larger stones. There is no doubt that the diamond bit employing smaller stones costs more to set than the bit using larger stones. However, with the technique developed at the shops of Sprague and Henwood, Inc., we feel that the relatively slight additional cost required to set these bits is more than paid for by the resultant lower drilling cost. We feel that the highest quality stone available is the most economical to use when hard fine grained rock is encountered. In summary, I would suggest that it might be possible to solve the problem presented in this paper by using a diamond bit employing stones at least as small as 80 per carat of the highest grade possible and by using the diamond bit at the highest speed available with modern drilling equipment. L. C. ARMSTRONG (author's reply) —It is generally agreed that the use of smaller, high-grade diamonds and of higher drilling speeds, as suggested by Mr. Ross, may be the best approach to the solution of the problem.

Discussion of the paper of W. G. MATTESON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1918, and printed in Bulletin No. 134, February, 1915, pp. 429 to 468. WILLIAM KENNEDY, Fort Worth, Tex. (written discussion*). -In his discussion of this paper, Mr. Sherburne Rogers offers voluminous figures to show that the salt forming the. cores of the various domes could not have been derived from sea water, and gives as an illustration the immense quantity of water required to form the salt found in the Humble dome. He refers to the theory advanced by Van der Gracht apparently in support of this contention, and claims to have disposed of the views held by some that the domes were, in a great measure, formed by lateral secretion. Van der Gracht says the immense salt plugs found throughout North Germany and other countries in that region were apparently formed by orogenic movements acting upon what he calls the Mother Bed of Salt, which he gives a thickness of about 1000 ft., and an extent of several thousand square miles. The age of this "mother bed" is given as Permian. Harris, in addition to his growing-crystal theory, also says probably a great portion of the salt found in the Coastal dories may have been derived from the salt water of Permian time. Both of these theories require an abundance of water, and consequently oppose Mr. Rogers' idea that the immensity of water required disproves the formation of the salt from that source. I do not suppose, however, that either Van der Gracht or Harris absolutely limits his view to the Permian as being the only source from which the salt could have come, but would probably agree to consider any other age as being the beginning. Although the Permian is very strongly represented throughout North Texas, we have none anywhere throughout the region from which the salt may be considered as having been derived. Many deep wells have been drilled along the eastern outcropping of the Carboniferous and each has passed directly from Cretaceous to Carboniferous formations. Thus we may eliminate the Permian as a source of salt in this region. But, although the Permian may be absent, we have with us the Carboniferous with probably a thickness of 3000 to 4000 ft., and something like 3000 ft. of Cretaceous, to say nothing of approximately 8000 ft. of Tertiary and later beds, all of which, if we may judge by the quantity and density of the waters obtained from the numerous wells drilled, carry immense quantities

The Rio Tinto - Cerro Colorado operation was the first major cyanide plant built out of South Africa since the Carlin and Corte mills came on-stream in 1965 and 1969. Its flowsheet was presented in the original monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice, " published in 1975, with a brief description of the plant but without the operating costs. The authors have recently received these data and it was believed worthwhile to present them in this volume along with the aforementioned flowsheet. The Cerro Colorado ore deposit is located at Minas de Rio Tinto in the province of Huelva, Spain, approximately 88 km (55 miles) north- west of Seville. The previously mined copper ore bodies lie on either side of the deposit which is mainly copper ore. The crest of the deposit is a capping of "gossan" containing hematite, limonite, gold, and silver. Separate facilities for primary crushing, concentration of copper ores and cyanidation of gold-silver ores are provided. Fine crushing is common to both ores. The run-of-mine open-pit ore is fed from a stockpile via a surge bin and apron feeder to a jaw crusher. After crushing to minus 150 mm (6 in. ), the ore is washed in a rotary scrubber to remove the clay material ahead of fine crushing. Minus 6 mm (1/4 in. ) screen undersize is pumped directly to the grinding circuit with the screen oversize being crushed to minus 19 mm (3/4 in. ) for feed to the primary ball mill; this is followed by two subsequent stages of ball mill grinding to 80% minus 43 microns (325 mesh). Grinding is with water only; no cyanide is used. After thickening, lime is added to the first two of seven Pachuca tanks for conditioning ahead of cyanide addition in each of the five remaining Pachuca tanks. This flowsheet indicates rapid cyanide consumption and the need to maintain a high strength cyanide solution for silver extraction. Agitation for dissolution of the gold and silver is followed by standard CCD practice employing four 67 m (220 ft) washing thickeners in series, with repulping between each thickener. A departure from American and Canadian practice is the use of Stellar filters developed in South Africa for pregnant solution clarification and recovery of zinc-gold-silver precipitates. The precipitate is treated with acid for zinc removal, the sludge filtered in presses, dried, calcined and smelted to produce dore bullion of 900 fineness containing 12% gold and 78% silver.

I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelsang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the members, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. AN X-ray diffraction pattern for "calcined cold precipitated ferric oxide" is reproduced dia-grammatically along with data for other iron oxides by R. C. Mackenzie.1' This pattern, which shows spacings higher than those for any other form of iron oxide, was obtained from material prepared and photographed at several different times over a period of weeks, but later attempts to reproduce the results were unsuccessful, the pattern of hematite being obtained every time.2 In an attempt to solve this problem, the original photographs showing the strange diffraction pattern were examined and a marked similarity to the hematite pattern was noticed, suggesting that the pattern was in fact due to hematite but corresponded to a shorter wavelength of X-rays than the Cu Ka which was assumed to have .been used. The eight strongest lines were provisionally identified with the strongest hematite lines and, by means of the corresponding hematite spacings, the X-ray wavelength was calculated for each line. This gave an almost constant value, with the exception of the innermost line which was somewhat diffuse, and confirmed the presence of hematite. The value obtained, 0.703 ± 0.015Å, corresponds to the molybdenum Ka wavelength. The X-ray tube used was a four-filament demountable tube with a copper target. Other photographs, mostly of soil clays, taken during the same period gave normal patterns of Cu Ka radiation with one exception. This was a calcined soil clay with a high iron content and also showed Mo Ka lines of the hematite structure. The explanation is almost certainly that the copper target was contaminated with molybdenum, but it is not known how this occurred. Specimens of alumino-silicates gave their normal Cu Ka pattern, but as the K absorption edge of iron is a little longer than the Cu Ka wavelength, specimens with a high iron content greatly reduced the intensity of the Cu Ka diffraction lines relative to that of the lines due to the shorter Mo Ka wavelength. The formation of hematite on calcining cold precipitated hydrated ferric oxide3 is thus confirmed. References R. C. Interest in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator's viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. Plant at Bunker Hill The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a 1¼ in, screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4½-mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen under-size, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass 36 in. and joins the under-size in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). More complete descriptions of the H. H. process and Bunker Hill sink-float plant are given in several recent articles, listed at the end of the paper. Preparation OF Medium at Bunker Hill New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days. A small portion of the current mill flotation concentrate is diverted from the lead cleaner cells to a I-in. vertical sand pump and pumped to a two-cell 36-in. Agitair flotation machine, where NaCn and ZnSO4 are added and the grade of concentrate is improved as shown in Table 2. Tailing from this operation is returned by gravity

Discussion of the paper of Frederick W. Apgar, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 7S, June, 1913, pp. 1011 to 1022. L. C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.:-I presume I am one of the few who are exceedingly interested in microscopic work, and I am sure we have all enjoyed this paper very much. I will not attempt to express my own feelings in regard to it beyond saying that it seems to me that this sort of investigation and study has been overlooked and slighted, and its possibilities are very great. There are one or two, details which impressed me, because they were novel to me, and one was the development of secondary galena with dull luster. I have never seen any galena which seemed to be secondary, and have never seen any that was secondary or primary that did not have a bright luster. KIRBY THOMAS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-The present-day mining engineer is expected to " see into the ground farther than the point of the pick " and he is justified in making free claim to his ability to do so. Mr. Apgar has recorded the development of the application to the work of the engineer of a very useful but tardily recognized instrument-the petrographic microscope, an instrument which is helping to shatter the proverbial "point of' the pick" limitation-and he has shown its use and its possibilities very clearly. Some further field examples of the use of the microscope in engineering problems may add to the appreciation of Mr. Apgar's scholarly paper. In exploration by diamond drills in the Sudbury, Ontario, nickel district it is often of great importance to determine when the drill has passed out of the norite and into the foot-wall formation. Structural calculations may give a clue to the expected point of contact, but the variations are considerable, and, since to stop the drill before reaching the contact is futile, and too continue beyond it is needless, it becomes of theoretic and economic importance to determine positively the lithological nature of the corer at critical stages in the work. In some places the foot-wall is an earlier norite, only distinguishable from the nickel norite (Sudbury-: ite), by means of an examination of the rock slides with a petrographic; microscope. Franklin Guiterman was born March 7, 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father, William Guiterman, was at that time engagcd in the wholesale dry-goods business. Both of his parents were natives of Bavaria, but the inspiration of America was upon them, as they gave to their son a peculiarly American name, symbolizing thrift, individualism and scientific knowledge. Franklin Guiterman received his general education in the grammar schools and the Hughes High School of Cincinnati. He finished the latter course in the early 70's of the last century, when the great demand for mining and metallurgical experts in this country naturally led his parents to direct his further studies in that direction. Accordingly, he went to Europe, and studied at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy of Freiberg, where he completed the course in 1877, at the age of 21, and returned to the United States to engage in mining and metallurgical practice. Going to Colorado, he became assayer for the Terrible mine, at Georgetown, and in 1878, for the Little Chief mine at Leadville. The position of assayer, particularly at that period and in that region, was the door to much valuable knowledge of mines and ores. Besides learning the nature and value of the different classes of ore from the mines of his own company (if he was employed by a company) the assayer, had the first chance, through his outside customers, of seeing and testing the specimens brought by prospectors, and thus learning of important new discoveries. Moreover, if he possessed metallurgical knowledge, he might advance to the position of a metallurgical manager. Guiterman stayed in Leadville four years, and during that period was assayer or chemist for several different companies. Then for about a year he superintended copper-mining operations at Hartville, Wyo. In 1884, he had charge of sampling works at Silverton, colo.—an admirable opportunity for gaining wide knowledge of the varied ores of the San Juan country. In 1885, he was Superintendent of the Mingo plant of the Pennsylvania Lead Co., at Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. The foregoing list of employments, each occupying not more than a year, certainly looks like the history of a rolling stone, gathering no moss. But the cause of these frequent changes was not inefficiency in each new position. In that time and period, a man who lost his place for such a reason was not likely to get another in the same neighborhood might away. And as for gathering "moss," the kind of "moss" that

Prior to 1914, there was little demand for antimony in this country; its use was limited almost entirely to the manufacture of type and bearing metals. Practically no antimony ore was mined here, the market being supplied principally from China, and the alloy was produced by a direct mixing of lead and antimony. The great world war, with its demand for shrapnel in hitherto undreamed of quantities, precipitated a great boom in the price of antimony. Nominally quoted at 6 c. to 7 c. in 1914, the price increased by leaps and bounds to 45 c. in March, 1916. Under the stimulus of high prices many small mines were opened, for it became profitable to work ores containing as low as 20 per cent. antimony. High-grade sulfide ores (stibnite), containing 55 per cent. to 60 per cent. antimony, were received from Bolivia, China, and Alaska. Low-grade sulfide ores, running from 20 per cent. to 45 per cent., were produced in Nevada, California, Idaho, Utah, and Mexico; much of this ore was fairly rich in silver. The principal oxide ores came from Mexico and Oregon. The charge consisted of a variety of sulfide ores containing Sb 20 to 60 per cent. and SiO2 6 to 45 per cent., oxide ores containing Sb 20 to 40 per cent. and SiO2 10 to 45 per cent. Secondary materials, such as battery plates, battery mud, lead oxide, paint, etc., together with refinery skims, softener skims, and other refinery byproducts, were treated along with the antimony ore to furnish the lead required. All silver-bearing antimony ores were treated in the residue furnace, the sulfur, iron, and copper forming matte that carried part of the silver, the balance going into lead bullion. The antimony slag produced was sufficiently low in silver to warrant being smelted in the blast furnace to antimonial lead.

Without having asked for it, the writer has apparently been drawn into the discussion regarding relative hoisting capacities which was started by Woodward Iron, egged on by Joe Haller of Cleveland-Cliffs [Mining Engineering, August p. 642] and Axel Kjelgaard [November p. 919], who took exception to Mr. Haller's remarks of tonnage hoisted and avers that they do better in Sweden. It does not appear to the writer that Mr. Haller was inclined to refer to the tonnage hoisted at Cleveland-Cliffs in a manner to imply that they claimed any hoisting record, but rather as a statement that they had hoisted a certain amount of ore during the year 1950. Mr. Haller has been in the mining game long enough to appreciate what Mr. Kjelgaard did not apparently take into consideration, that length of haul, shifts hoisted, nature of ore, method of loading and the many other factors which influence the hoisting cycle make a comparison of tonnages hoisted of two given mines almost an impossibility. Mr. Cheyette sent you .a copy of his letter to Bob Manegold relative to the capacities of the Orient #2 mine. There are several mines around the Country which constantly set up records about which little or nothing at all is ever heard. We cite the Snow Hill Coal Co. mine at Terre Haute, Ind., which has an automatic Nordberg hoist and which hoists 12 tons per trip or 700 tons per hr from 700 ft. This is a counter-weighted installation and a complete cycle is made every 62 seconds or 58 trips per hr. Another mine, The Potash Company of America mine at Carlsbad, N. Mex., has a Nordberg automatic hoist, hoisting eight tons per trip from 1150 ft on a one minute cycle. The materials hoisted in these two mines are ideal for automatic hoisting-they are free flowing so that no hang up is anticipated and hoisting is continuous. Multiplying out the above figures you will find that it is possible to hoist 11,000 tons in two shifts at Snow Hill or over 3 million tons in 300 days per year and over 2 million tons at Potash. Other mines have records which can be pointed to with pride. When a record for one year is established, it doesn't stand too long as here in America the ambition of all the men connected with the operation forces them on to larger tonnages. T. C.
