THE electron diffraction pattern as seen in the electron microscope represents an approximately plane section of the reciprocal lattice. Identifying the zone axis of a diffraction pattern is often laborious for a crystal of low symmetry, especially if several crystal orientations are present. A program has been written in FORTRAN II (Version 2) for the IBM 1620 which will assist in plotting out reciprocal lattice sections. The calculation is performed by choosing a zone axis [uvw] and determining the d spacings and angle between the planes (Ow - v) and (wO - u). (This procedure is varied slightly for zone axes with Miller indices equal to zero.) Cartesian coordinates for the reciprocal lattice points are then calculated for these planes and for (ww— [u + v]). Any reciprocal lattice points within the parallelogram formed by the origin and these three points are then computed. The input and output are best described by use of an example (Monoclinic ZrO2) used in the author's work. Input consists of two cards: 1) The crystal parameters: a, b, c, a, 8, y, e.g., 5.1477, 5.2030, 5.3156, 90.000, 99.380, 90.000. 2) Three numbers, D, E, F, e.g., 5, 3, 3.0710-the first is the limit of the sum (u + v + w) considered; the second limits the absolute value of u, v, and w to (E- 1), e.g., 2, so that zones (221) would be the highest order considered in this example; the third, F, is the required constant, yL. Output is in the format shown in Table I. The reciprocal lattice sections may then be plotted on standard graph paper and compared with the unknown diffraction pattern. I HAVE previously shown you in the Fifth Book the process of making guns and gun carriages, together with other preparations and methods of moving them. If I now failed to show you more about them, it would be as if I had pointed out only the useless shadow of a thing, for I did not show the kinds and arrangement of their supplies or how the effects for which they are made are achieved. For these reasons I now wish to tell you, in addition to what I have already said, how saltpeter is made and the methods of refining it well; what it is and how without it guns and many effects of violent and artificial fires would have been discovered in vain. After this, I also wish to tell you the methods of compounding the powders for large and small guns, and finally how these are loaded and discharged. I also wish to tell you how mines are made, and fire tubes, [149v] fire pots, squibs, fireballs, rockets, shells, grapeshot, and other similar devices for shooting fire in order to bum ships, supplies, bridges, and ramparts, or, in offense, for firing on batteries. I also wish to teach you to make certain bronze balls for shooting, which carry fire and break in many pieces when they hit. For surely, besides being terrifying to the sight, they would be harmful to armies lined up in battle when they are fighting. Likewise, I wish, to enlighten you as to how artificial fires are made that last long and are difficult to extinguish. Since these are fine and useful things in wars, every captain and soldier should give them consideration and know how to use them when necessary. You will be pleased to have this information if for no other reason than that you can teach it to those who take delight in celebrating holidays with festivities and with fires.

Discussion of the paper of Godfrey T. Vivian, presented at the Cleveland meeting, October, 1912, and published in Bulletin No. 76, October, 1912, pp. 1103 to 1109. COURTENAY DEKALB, Tucson, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*) :--Mr. Vivian's paper is interesting as an evidence of renewed attempts to solve the problem of adapting the centrifugal machine to the uses of the metallurgist. It would not seem that the Gee machine has solved the problem, because it is manifestly of use only with quite high-grade material, since low-grade pulp could not stand the cost of treatment by a discontinuous process. The mechanism, however, would seen to accomplish grading more perfectly than the ordinary centrifugal basket. This is an entirely different thing from concentration, which is intended to yield a finished marketable product. The real problem is to design a successful continuous centrifugal machine. Ten years or snore ago a machine, which might be described as having an inverted step-basket, offered much promise, and was constructed and tested at considerable cost, but it presented insuperable difficulties. The construction of a successful continuous centrifugal would be welcomed by the whole industrial world, since its uses would be most extensive. Mr. Vivian suggests the utilization of the centrifugal machine as a substitute for slime filters in the cyanide process, but he, has apparently not tried the experiment. I tested the efficiency of centrifugal machines for this purpose in 1897-8, having to extract the cyanide solution from a highly argillaceous slime of the sticky kind which the Mexican call ?lama." Our filter-presses yielded cakes containing usually :30 per cent. of moisture, and so dense as to preclude washing. The centrifugal machine readily Brought the moisture content down to 9 per cent. and permitted fairly successful washing. In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by "remote control" mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications ' as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the

The approximate production of petroleum in the various fields and for the country as a whole is shown in the following table, the figures for the later months of the year being estimated. Among the developments of the year may be mentioned the finding by the Standard Oil Co. of a small production, about 6290 bbl., at Aguas Blancas in the Province of Salta near the Bolivian border, and of about 88,000 bbl. at Lomitas, near Tartagal in the same province. The Government (Yaciementos Petroliferos Fiscales) in the last four months of the year also obtained about 6290 bbl, from Quebrada Galarce. .The oil found in Salta is of good grade and while the quantity is small great hopes of larger production are entertained. As far as technology is concerned there has been no development in Bolivia during the year 1936, because the country, just emerging from the war with Paraguay, is only beginning to rebuild its economic foundations. Great steps, however, are being taken in order to secure a rapid and sound development of its oil resources, as follows: 1. The new Petroleum Law, which contemplates the problem of proration and conservation of natural resources, prohibiting the wasteful use of gas, and regulating the number of wells, their spacing and the permissible output per well, for each particular pool according to the conditions prevailing therein. 2. The creation of an official entity with the object of developing and exploiting a large petroliferous area. This entity has been called Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (Y.P.F.B.), and the region assigned to it is all the sub-andean zone, which is approximately one hundred miles wide and borders the eastern part of the Oriental Andean range, from Argentine to Peru. It is said that drilling will be started immediately in various localities. At the present time a wide geological survey of part of the area is being made in order to find out which regions offer the best possibilities of commercial development. Y.P.F.B. has been authorized by the Government to draw up contracts with private companies for the exploitation of limited zones. Production The only company that has been producing in the country in 1936 is the Standard Oil Company of Bolivia, and only from two of its fields: Camiri and Sanandita. New wells were not drilled. During the first nine months of the year 12,762,958 liters (80,275 bbl.) was produced, 34,985 bbl. from the Camiri field and 45,290 bbl. from the Sanandita field. Reports for October, November and December are not yet available. The total for the year 1935 was 25,978,737 liters (163,388 bbl.).

THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it became important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determin; ing whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state. Analysis of Tintic Ores These chemical and mineralogical determinations showed the silver to be present as native silver, argento jarosite, argentite, and combined or inherent in the tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, cerussite, anglesite, mimetite, malachite, iron oxide and occluded in the quartz. Careful microscopic work would probably show other forms in small amounts, such as the halide silver minerals and some of the antimony sulfide combinations. The tabulation of the analyses of the various products (Table 1) shows no evidences of fixed ratios of silver to any particular base metal.

WE found it necessary, in December, 1874, to repair the upper part of the lining in No. 5 furnace at Glendon, and, as we succeeded in doing it with comparatively little trouble, a description of the plan followed may be of service to those having a similar operation to perform. On two opposite sides, as shown by the sketch, the lining was completely gone for a height of about four feet, below which it increased gradually in thickness, being nine inches thick about three feet lower down. On a plane at right angles to the section drawn, the brick were nowhere entirely gone, but were in some places not more than two or three inches thick, being still sufficient to sustain the upper part, where the brick, being above the level of the stock, were not at all worn. The furnace was blown down, so that when we cast and closed the tuyeres, about 7 A.M., on December 8th, the top of the stock was about twenty-four feet below the filling-plates. The walls were quite hot, and a good deal of gas was given off for several hours after the tuyeres were closed. The hopper and bell were thrown into the furnace, and were covered by filling several charges of cold stock over them, which at once greatly cooled off the top of the furnace. A wrought-iron pipe, thirty inches in diameter, in five sections, each six feet long, was then put down, and made to stand upright, as nearly as possible in the centre of the furnace. Around this we filled a double charge of coal, taking care to heap it up next the pipe, and let it get thinner as it got to the walls. This was covered with about two feet of fine ore, leaving the lowest joint in the pipe entirely uncovered. We were now ready to put in our scaffold to get at the

Enrollment in the mineral engineering departments at many of our universities has decreased substantially over the past few years, a fact that is due to a number of reasons. Some of the more obvious reasons are: (l) lack of student stimulation in the classroom, (2) absence or lack of salesmanship by the mineral industry faculty, (3) minimal financial support of academic programs by industry (some companies have been very generous, while others have given nothing), (4) failure of some companies to utilize the engineering backgrounds of personnel, (5) salary in some instances, and (6) job location in some in- stances. As some of these problems have been recognized, appropriate steps have been taken to correct them. Only one of the reasons listed is not subject to change, and that is job location. One university' that found itself in the position of reduced enrollment in the mineral industries is the University of Utah. Since the author was in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at that university, and since data on enrollment and scholarship support have been published by that department, that department will be used for illustrative purposes to show the effect that active scholarship incentive can have on undergraduate enrollment. As Fig. I shows, there were approximately 35 total undergraduates in the department in 1966. Extrapolation of the freshman line from 1965 to 1966 (and previous years) suggested that no freshmen would be enrolled in metallurgical engineering by 1969 unless something drastic were done to alter the trend. In the Spring of 1966, 20 scholarships were offered to high school seniors as an incentive to enroll in metallurgical engineering. These scholarships were financed from a private endowment to the department, but at the present time industry is also contributing to the program. With these incentives, the department essentially doubled its total enrollment in three years, as shown in Fig. 1. Cornparison of this figure with the number of students on scholarships (Fig. 2) shows a direct correlation between undergraduate enrollment and the number of students on scholarship support.

Discussion of the paper of Robert R. Abbott, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2389 to 2400. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.:-Mr. Abbott has certainly made a strenuous effort to ascertain the influence of the various elements on the absorption of carbon by steel-a subject of great importance to those dealing with the case hardening of that metal. Because of the extensive and careful character of Mr. Abbott's experiments, one is all the more disappointed that his results, as he himself recognizes, are not more satisfactory; for, indeed they leave us just about where we were,-still entertaining uncertain views in regard to the carbon-absorbing power of various alloy steels. It might be asked whether Mr. Abbott's method of estimating the amount of carbon absorbed-namely, by weighing the specimens before and after the carburizing treatment-was the best one to select. Are not serious sources of error. inherent to such procedure because of the difficulty of satisfactorily removing the earburizing material attached to the specimen ? The method of least squares has certainly failed to solve the problem satisfactorily. By manipulating Mr. Abbott's results in a different manner I have obtained the following expression: P = 100 - 50 C - 7 Ni + 20 Cr, in which P represents the carbon-absorbing power; C, the percentage of carbon; Ni, that of nickel; and Cr, that of chromium. It is assumed that the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron, or what might be called its carburizability, is represented by 100. Applying the formula, for instance, to a steel containing 0.15 per cent. C, 3 per cent. nickel, and 0.50 per cent. chromium, its carbon-absorbing power would be 100-50X0.15-7X3+20X0.50=81.50; that is, 81.50 per cent. of the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron.

AN excerpt from the Odessa Isvestia Vechernia, dated April 24, 1927, and translated by P. Routzitzky, summarizes a report by Professor Preobragensky ad-dressed to the Russian Government. Professor Preo-bragensky writes in regard to newly discovered potash deposits in eastern European Russia. Near Solikamsk in the Perm district, about 100 miles east of the Ural mountains and on the Kama river, large deposits have been located and the belt has been traced southward about 25 miles. Subsequently the search for potash salts has been transferred to the Berezovsky district, near Nikolsk, on the Kosva river, about 70 miles north-east-of the city of Perm. Toward the end of March, 1927, at a depth of 800 ft., drilling at the Levensk salt works revealed potash salts in, definite strata. The bed has a thickness which extends from a depth of- 245 to 307 meters (latest data in middle of April, 1927) and has not been bottomed yet. Professor Preobragensky goes on to say that these operations have definitely, developed very large de-posits, the limits of which are still unknown. There is at least an implication that the reserves far exceed those of Stassfurt, Germany. For European use they are, of course, much less accessible, for by through rail they lie 1200 miles east of Petrograd. Further, no particulars are given as to the potash content. It is to be supposed that the salt occurs in the Permian beds that extend north and south along the west flank of the Ural mountains, as the localities mentioned .all lie within the area so mapped on the new geologic map of Russia issued by the Scientific and Technical Di-vision of the All-Russian Council of Soviets in 1922. It is interesting to note that these salt beds are of the same geologic age as those of 'the Stassfurt region and of the west Texas-New Mexico district, in which the U. S. Bureau of Mines is at present drilling.

SOME problems concomitant with commercial exploitation of marble are presented as examples of interesting, useful and profitable fields for application of scientific knowledge. The marble industry is only one such field and is selected because its varying new aspects are familiar to the author. However, what is true for marble is equally so in principle for many industrial minerals. The problems of any stone industry are to maintain markets, create new outlets for stone already in demand, and develop varied uses for varieties that are not so popular. Here the geologist has a different role from most of his colleagues in metal mining. The producing branch may ask about the expectable variation in thickness or size of a deposit as development proceeds. The stock department may call for the available amount of a given type of stone before accepting a large order. The sales force requires data on the use for stone from certain parts of deposits in order to divert grades to the most suitable use. The service department wants defects rectified and the cause determined to avoid recurrence. The mills want data on durability and cutting quality of abrasives. The geologist occupies no special department; he is on general call, as may be illustrated by a few types of problems that may be classified as: (1) dominantly geological in character, (2) dominantly chemical in character, (3) dominantly physical in character. GEOLOGICAL PROBLEMS The geological problems deal almost exclusively with the size of blocks. Size across the deposit is limited by thickness of individual beds, and along the strike by the space between crosscutting joints. Frequently the vertical depth of a block is reduced by exfoliation shells arising from spontaneous expansion. All these factors require consideration in developing a deposit to fill an order. In any kind of furnace the question of preventing the loss of heat is important, for no matter how the heat is obtained it costs something; and consequently, other things equal, that furnace is most desirable which uses the greatest percentage of the total heat generated for the particular object in view. In the furnace which uses electricity for the generation of heat the importance of preventing losses of heat is very much greater than in any other. To generate 1,000 kg-cal. requires an expenditure of 1.16 kw-hr., and consequently the cost per calorie is always expensive when electricity is used for heating. In heating any material in a furnace a general rule is that the generation of heat should be as rapid as possible. In any given furnace the heat-losses may be expressed as so many watts, and, therefore, the longer it takes to heat the furnace-charge the greater the losses will be. Suppose that a furnace contains a charge to be heated to 1,500°C. and that the average loss of heat is at the rate of 100 kw., then if the process of heating the charge takes 1 hr. the losses will amount to 100 kw-hr.; but if by using a more rapid generation of energy the charge can be heated in 30 min. the losses will amount to 50 kv-hr. An example from experiments on a certain process may be given to illustrate this point. The problem was simply to heat a furnace-charge to a certain temperature, and experiments were made to determine the effect of increasing the rate of generation of energy and comparing the kilowatt-hours required to heat a given charge. Here are typical results : Rate of Generation Energy Per Kg. of Energy. of product 88 kw. 1.7 kw-hr. 93 kw. 1.6 kw-hr.

Horace F. Lunt, York, Montana* :—Two years ago I visited the region described by Mr. Jennings and assisted in the examination of a somewhat similar group of deposits in the White Mesa sandstone on the Navajo Indian Reservation, 125 miles north of Flagstaff and 50 miles east of the Kaibab plateau. There, the Triassic red sandstone is less than 200 ft. thick, and is overlain by a stratum from 200 to 250 ft. thick of white sandstone, which gives the name of " White Mesa" to that locality. The white sandstone shows all phases of crossbedding in great complexity, and evidently marks a period of oscillation and subsidence of the water, or an elevation of the land, at the close of a geological epoch. The prevailing color is white or gray, but occasionally it is red. In structure, it is composed of well-worn grains of quartzsand, from which most of the cementing material has been leached out, leaving it soft and friable. Possibly the cement was ferruginous, as is indicated by occasional traces of red color. The copper-deposits consist of a replacement of the cement of one particular cross-bedded stratum of the sandstone by chrysocolla, having also at times various quantities of tenorite in grains or masses. Some specimens of the ore contain as much as 32 per cent. of copper. Generally the copper-deposits are a few hundred cubic feet in size, and no strict line of demarcation is shown between them and the surrounding sandstone, the bluish-green color of the chrysocolla gradually fading into the white of the sandstone. The ore is apparently associated with small vertical crevices or fissures. Some of the deposits show a distinct vein-structure, while others do not. The origin of the ore is not very clear. Shoveling ore cost so much at Tyrone during the year 1917 that it was deemed advisable to conduct tests to see where the fault lay. These tests were in the nature of time studies and extended over a period of very nearly a year. No data were available on this work to supply a starting point, so it was necessary to begin in a very elementary way, to find out the capacity of the average Mexican laborer. To' obtain a basis for comparison, it was necessary to determine the capacity of various types and sizes of shovels, so as to know whether the 21-1b. (9.5-kg.) load was the best load underground as well as on surface. A list of essential factors influencing shoveling was also made out during the course of a short series of preliminary time studies, and the motions involved in shoveling were analyzed and subdivided for convenience in studying. The necessary forms and record sheets were also decided upon at this time. A second short series of tests was then conducted on the surface, so as to be able to estimate the negative effects of underground work on the shovelers, and to minimize, as far as possible, the need for studying obviously poor types and sizes of shovels under the difficult conditions to be encountered in the mine. The test work underground consumed by far the greater proportion of the time and was divided into three series: Shoveling directly into a chute; shoveling into a wheelbarrow and tramming to a chute; and shoveling into a car and tramming to a chute. In each series the following points were determined for various lengths of time worked: Number of shovelfuls handled per minute, effect of distance thrown on shoveling speed, amount of rest required, amount of time consumed in tramming and dumping, proportion of working day occupied in shoveling, total tonnage handled during various working periods, effect of distance on tonnage handled during the day.

A short time ago, I had occasion to cast iron plates 1 in. thick, direct from metal containing Si, 0.51; 8, 0.045; Mn, 0.75; and P, 0.094 per cent. Much to my astonishment, I found that there was no trouble in planing them; whereas, if cupolaimetal of like composition had been used,*the planing would have been a difficult operation. I have often noticed a greater fluidity or " life " in furnace-metal, as compared with the cupola-product. Iron can be seen flowing down the furnace-runners from 50 to 100 ft., and reaching the last pig-bed in satisfactory condition, while cupola-metal might have solidified before it had flowed so far. I have seen Bessemer iron, which, on account of its low phosphorus-content, does not have the " life " of ordinary foundry-iron, held in a 30-ton ladle for nearly an hour and a half; and after skimming off the coke-dust, it still had to be cooled off' considerably before being cast. As a general proposition, it is known that the lower sulphur-content and the frequently higher temperature of direct-metal, compared with the same iron remelted in the cupola, has much to do with its greater life; yet some problems connected with this phenomenon seem to call for further study. For instance, furnace-metal containing more than 1 per cent. of silicon holds carbon, which is separated later as "kish." This separation does not take place to any great degree while the metal is very hot; but during its gradual cooling, at times, the kish is given off in such large quantities as to cover the ground from 20 to 30 ft. around the ladle. In making castings of direct-metal, especially with a high content of silicon, the separation of kish becomes an annoyance. A. E. LEE, JR. (author)—In addition to the paper we should like to make a few remarks. First, the seriousness of bending of the clay retort cannot be overemphasized. Not only did bending limit the length of the vessel, but it permitted corrosive fluid slags to concentrate in the belly of the retort and thus increased the possibility of boring. Bending also practically prohibited the use of cleanout machines and increased the danger of excessive fume losses by allowing furnace gases to escape around the top of the retort mouth. It will be noted that the Blackwell pottery practice places considerable emphasis on careful drying of retorts. Perhaps it is another smelter superstition, but traditionally the aging of retorts beyond a reasonable drying period has been considered important to long life. We are unable to give a good explanation of why aging should improve retorts. During the past fall in an attempt to prove a theory that the combined water in the clay decreased during aging, about 50 samples of wet retort collars were placed in a dry room when it was closed. Loss of weight, combined water and free moisture were measured each week over the 100 day drying period. The affinity of the dried retort for moisture makes difficult the accurate measurement of free water; however, there was a clearly defined free moisture change from about 12.5 pct when freshly made to about 2 pet at the end of 18 days, then a gradual loss to about 0.25 pet at 70 days and an apparent equilibrium near this figure through the 100th day. There was no appreciable change in the combined water. The change in weight of the average sample was, however, rather unusual, there being consistently a loss of weight throughout the entire 100 days. From the 63rd day on this leveled off to about 0.03 pet per week. These were small samples and certainly should have dried

These unique copper-deposits occur on the top of the Kaibab Plateau, in Cocouino county, Arizona, and extend from the northern edge of the Grand Cañon of the Colorado river to near the Utah State line. The best-developed deposits are near Jacobs Lake, 30 miles south of the Utah line, where they are 16 ft. thick, of unknown width, and are more or less continuous for 5 miles. From Jacobs Lake to the edge of the Grand Cañon, a distance of 40 miles, outcrops of ore have been found, but no explorations have been made except those of wandering cowboys and hunters. The Kaibab Plateau, the highest of the Colorado river plateaus, is a great uplift, about 90 miles long from north to south, and from 10 to 20 miles wide from east to west. Its southern face is the Grand Cañon; its western boundary a N—S. fault plane, which separates it from the Eanab Plateau, lying 1,500 ft. below. Its eastern edge is a monocline which brings the horizontal beds of the high plateau to the level of the plateaucountry of eastern Utah. The elevation of the plateau near the Colorado river is over 8,000 ft., and about 6,000 ft. at the Utah line. Its structure, as shown by the western fault, consists of about 500 ft. of Aubrey limestones underlain by 1,000 ft. of red sandstones. The limestone is the upper member of the Carboniferous, and is overlaid by the marls and shales of the Permian, 25 miles to the north on the Kanab Plateau. At the town of Kanab, near the Utah line, the Permian strata pass under the magnificent redsandstone cliffs of the Triassic, that rise to heights of 1,000 ft. above the desert. The Grand Cañon exposes a section a mile deep at the southern end of the plateau, showing all the formations from the Archean to the top of the Carboniferous.

IN a study of the effects of solid solution alloying on the deformation texture of titanium, an alloy containing 3.8 pct A1 was found to develop a (0001) [1010] texture instead of the texture characteristic of pure titanium.ls2 A short investigation has been made of the change in texture with aluminum content. Alloys containing 0.27, 0.47, 1.05, and 1.43 pct A1 were prepared by vacuum arc melting, using iodide titanium as the base material. Homogenized ingots were reduced 90 pct in thickness by cold rolling. Pole figures were obtained using the usual film techniques. Fig. 1 shows that the change from the tilted to the nontilted (0001) position is gradual. The dashed contour lines in Fig. 1 indicate the extent to which data was collected. The addition of 0.27 pct A1 resulted in a decrease in the transverse spread of basal poles. With increasing aluminum content, the amount of the tilt becomes less and the region of highest intensity takes the shape of a ring about the center of the pole figure. For aluminum contents greater than 1 pct, the (0001) [1010] texture is definitely present—the sharpness increasing as the amount of solute is increased.* It is interesting to note that Williams and Eppel-sheimer9 eported for commercial grade titanium a high intensity region 20" toward the rolling direction from the rolling plane normal in addition to. one 30" toward the transverse direction. Their basal pole figure was similar to Fig. 1, row inree. The observation that the texture changes gradually with solute concentration is similar to the results of similar studies on copper." At the present time these effects are not clearly understood. Partition of certain elements, particularly nickel, was determined for slowly cooled steels, the greater number containing from 0.30 to 0.35 pct C. Approximately 3 pct of the nickel, 18 pct of the manganese, 33 pct of the molybdenum, and 35 pct of the chromium occur in the carbide phase. Partition of one element is not much affected by the presence of another. THE object of this investigation was: 1—to determine the partition of nickel between cemen-tite and ferrite in a medium and high carbon series of annealed steels; 2—to evaluate the effect of chromium and/or molybdenum or both on the partition of nickel in medium carbon annealed steels; 3— to determine the partition of chromium between ferrite and carbide in a series of medium carbon annealed steels; and 4—to study the chemistry of the carbides formed in an AISI 2330 steel during both isothermal transformation, and quench and draw experiments at 1150°F (620°C). The partition of alloying elements between ce-mentite and ferrite in annealed steels has been the subject of many investigations, a summary of which has been given by Austin1. However, there is no satisfactory data available concerning the partition of nickel. It has generally been assumed that virtu- ally all of the nickel concentrates in the ferrite phase in annealed steels. Two investigators"." have reported the finding of nickel in extracted carbide residues. Recently, it has been shown4 that nickel substitutes up to 40 pct for iron in the lattice of cementite produced by the low temperature carburization of iron-nickel powders. In addition to the lack of data on nickel partition, the literature also fails to make reference to the effect of other elements on the nickel content of the carbide in nickel-bearing steels.
