On December 31, 1959, there existed in the United States 15,993 slot-type coke ovens capable of producing 81,447,700 net tons of coke. These ovens were concentrated in 74 coke plants in 21 different states. As of the same date, there were 7448 beehive ovens in existence at 45 plants in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Total annual capacity of the existing beehive ovens was 4,368,800 net tons, but only 5148 ovens with a capacity of 3,131,600 tons were in operating condition. It is interesting to compare the average dimensions of slot-type ovens built during recent years with the 30 ft x 5 ½ ft x 16 ½ in. ovens erected at Syracuse, N. Y. in 1892. A composite oven built according to the average dimensions of all those erected between 1954 and 1958, for instance, would be 39 ft long. 12 ft high, and 18 in. in width. The coal capacity would be 16 tons as against the 4.4 tons which could be charged to the Syracuse ovens. Of the 15.993 slot- type ovens in existence at the end of 1959, by far the greater number were built by the Koppers Co. whose total of 11,280 ovens included 7891 Koppers- Becker and 3389 Koppers ovens. Of the remainder, there were 3260 Wilputte, 1350 Semet-Solvay, 63 Otto, and 40 Simon Carves ovens. By-product coke oven plants are usually classified either as furnace or merchant plants. According to the definitions used by the US Bureau of Mines, the former are "those that are owned by or financially affiliated with iron and steel companies whose main business is producing coke for use in their own blast furnaces. All other coke plants are classified as merchant. They include those that manufacture metallurgical, industrial, and residential heating grades of coke for sale on the open market; coke plants associated with chemical companies or gas utilities; and those affiliated with local iron works, where only a small part (less than 50 pct of their output) is used in affiliated blast furnaces." The annual coke capacity of the merchant plants during 1959 was 10,393,000 tons. However, the by-product oven of today is essentially an appurtenance of the iron and steel industry, rather more than 87 pct of total by- product coking capacity being concentrated at furnace plants. This was not always so. There was a time when the merchant plants played a much greater part in meeting the US demand for coke and gas. High noon for the merchant plants was reached during the early 1930's. By 1932 there were as many by- product oven installations being operated by the merchant sector of the industry as by the coke divisions of the iron and steel industry (44 of each), and in the same year the merchant plants produced 46.5 pct of all by-product coke made in the country. Since that time their contribution has drastically declined. In 1940 merchant plants were responsible for only 23.2 pct of total US production, and by 1950 their number had decreased to 30 plants which turned out 18.5 pct of the total by-product coke made. At the end of 1959 only 20 of the 74 existing by-product oven installations were merchant plants. They ac- counted for 12.5 pct of the year's production, or 6,849,786 net tons. This percentage has remained fairly constant since 1954. There are several reasons for the decline of the merchant coking industry. For example. On the grounds of economy, quality control, continuity of supply, and so on, the iron and steel industry usually prefers to control its own mines and carbonize its own coal at or near to the blast furnace rather than rely on independent operators for metallurgical coke. As the steel companies have enlarged their own coking facilities, so has the need for coke obtained from other sources declined. Furthermore, not only has the steel industry increased in self-sufficiency by building mare coke ovens during recent years, but it has also progressively improved the fuel efficiency of its blast furnaces. During the years 1947-49 the average coke consumption per ton of pig iron was 1892.8 lb. During 1958 the corresponding figure was 1613.4 lb. There are many individual furnaces where still better results are being obtained, and further reductions in the average may be expected. Perhaps the greatest threat to the merchant coking plant has been the fantastic increase in the use of natural gas and petroleum products for purposes which manufactured gas once served. So deadly has the com- petition from natural gas and oil been that it has almost eliminated by-product oven installations owned by public utilities. In the peak years of the early 1930's there were 23 such public utility plants. In 1960 only two were left. One of these, owned by the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, was at Indianapolis, Ind.; the other was the plant operated by the Philadelphia Electric Co. at Chester, Pa. Distribution of material in the fine sizes of a comminution product generally is well represented by the empirical equation' y = 100 (x/k)a [1] in which y — cumulative percent finer, x = particle size, a -= distribution modulus, and k = size modulus. Charles3 found that the energy consumption in comminution is usefully expressed by another empirical relation, E = Ak(1-D) [2] in which E = energy input per unit volume of material, A = a constant, k = size modulus based on Eq. 1, and n = a constant; (1-n) is the slope of a plot of log E vs log k. Holmes3 has presented energy equations similar to Eq. 2. The constants a and n in Eqs. 1 and 2 have been shown to depend both on the nature of the material and on the comminuting device. Moreover, Charles showed that within experimental error a and n are a — n+1 = 0 [3] Combining Eqs. 2 and 3, E = A k-a [4] In the first sections of this article it is shown that the energy equation, Eq. 4, can be derived directly from the size distribution equation for the fine sizes, Eq. 1. The derivations are made without assuming any of the specific relationships between energy and particle size which have been common in previous literature. For comminution processes in which Eqs. 1 and 4 adequately represent the experimental data, the constant A in Eq. 4 is found to be a simple and useful inverse measure of grindability. That is, A is the energy consumption per unit volume of comminution product finer than unit size as determined from the straight line portion of the log-log plot of the size distribution. These considerations all lead to a unifying hypothesis of comminution mechanism from which both Eq. 1 and Eq. 4 can be derived. Finally, it is pointed out that this hypothesis raises serious questions as to the significance of the Rittinger hypothesis, the Kick hypothesis, and other theories in which energy numbers are systematically assigned to various size fractions of comminution products in order to calculate theoretical energy consumptions. Derivation of the Energy Equation from the Size Distribution Equation: For simplicity, consider the comminution of 100 volumes of a feed material of relatively uniform particle size. The comminution process may be considered as the summation of many individual and independent comminution events. The extent of comminution is most easily expressed as the number of comminution events, z. In the first derivation, the key assumption is that the characteristics of the comminution events in a given crushing or grinding process are substantially constant and do not vary with the progress of the comminution process. Accordingly the characteristics of an average comminution event may be defined. In one such event, a quantity of energy $E is applied to a single particle of size f and volume $v. The crushing of this particle produces fine particles with a size distribution similar to that given by Eq. 1: yw=100(x/ka)a0 [51 In this equation yo, a0, and k0 are used to characterize the product of an individual comminution event rather than the product of the comminution process as a whole. In using Eq. 5, we will not be concerned with values of x close to the feed size f and will therefore assume only that the equation is applicable to the finest sizes of the material. THE aftermath of a world war brings up a number of economic problems for the consideration of all thinking and patriotic citizens. The solution of the problems which confront the country at this time cannot well be accomplished by reference to past experience, for such conditions as confront us today have not existed in the past. We must, therefore, in any attempt to solve the present problems, rely to a great extent upon a careful analysis of present conditions to determine what is wrong; and after this is determined, seek the remedy and apply it. It needs no argument to establish the fact that, in the effort to win the war, the cost of so doing, and the waste in connection with it were, to a large extent, lost sight of; and this situation caused high wages, high cost of all materials, and of food supplies.

Discussion of the paper of Willis T. Burns, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2011 to 2049. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I think Mr. Burns spoke of two unusual conditions which he has at his plant, namely, that he uses directly converter anodes and very high current density. He did not mention another condition : the very low cost of power, which circumstance, I believe, is responsible for some of the peculiarities of his plant noticed by us from the East. I am struck by the rather low ampere efficiency which Mr. Burns obtains, and in looking over the plant thought that there was a considerable leakage from one tank to the other, and that the ampere efficiency could be increased by looking after the leakage of electricity front one tank to the other.

There are no data available of shipments until 1858, and then estimated, when railroad service became available. By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.

WALLACE E. PRATT, Wichita Falls, Tex. (written discussion *).-The age of the oil in the southern Oklahoma fields, Mr. Powers concludes, is Pennsylvanian, or in part, possibly, pre-Pennsylvanian. In a later paper,1 he recognizes the Ordovician age of the small production from the Bullhead A. Daney, No. 14, in the Healdton field. But nowhere does Mr. Powers admit the possibility of oil of Permian age in southern Oklahoma. Yet shallow oil in the adjacent north Texas fields. (Electra, Burkburnett, and Petrolia), which are generally conceded to be closely related to the fields of southern Oklahoma in geological aspect, may very well be of Permian age. Drilling activity in Nebraska continued to decline during 1944. Nine tests for oil and gas were completed during the year and four wells were drilling at the close of the year. Four wells were drilled in Richardson County, three in Hitchcock County and single wells were drilled or drilling in Butler, Gage, Holt, Nemaha and Scottsbluff Counties. Only one of the completions resulted in commercial pro- duction, the others being abandoned as dry holes. A number of stratigraphic test holes were drilled in the state by the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., in Johnson, Otoe, Chase, Dundy and Garden Counties. No new fields were discovered during 1944 but the limits of the Barada field, Richardson County, was extended a short distance southward. Oil production continued to drop and about two thirds as much oil was produced in 1944 as in 1943.

One of our members, in Colombia, has written the following interesting account of his experience in trying to remit his dues to the Institute. "Last year I was away at the end of the year and on my return I was unable to obtain a draft in Honda until April, I believe. To avoid delay this year I remitted cash, early in January, to a friend in Bogota who I imagined could sell or procure for me various small drafts to cover my annual subscriptions. After many weeks' delay, I was informed that he could not get them for me and was remitting the cash to Honda where they were obtainable. After another long delay, I was informed that no one in Honda would sell drafts or checks for small amounts. Eventually I found a friend who was willing to oblige me in the matter and at once forwarded the amount."

A SERIES of awards for men and women in indus-try who by their inventions, heroisms, vision, and powers of mediation are contributing daily to the life and well-being of America in a substantial way, will be given by the Harmon Foundation. The series, to be known as "Awards to Honor Men in Industry," consists of two cash prizes, $1,000 and $500 each, accompanied by a gold and silver medal respectively, and 100 bronze medals. No one above the rank of foreman will be eligible. Because of the diversity of .American indus-try, the Foundation is planning to confine its awards during the first year to the following branches of man-ufacturing: automotive, building, electrical, metal and textiles, including clothing. The Harmon Foundation invites the general public, newspapers, organizations and employees to bring to its attention such persons as they may deem worthy of the award.

The tight electric power supply is one of the most dramatic problems facing the mining industry in 1971. This is caused by rising demands for energy. Clean-fuel and air-pollution controls have contributed to the problems of producing energy from sulfur oil and coal. Coking coal has become scarce. One stimulating development is that coal is no longer the cinder in the mining industry's eye. In fact, it may be the favorite candidate as a base for fuel within a few years. Synthetic gas from coal is the watchword. In dedicating a multi-million- dollar project aimed at converting coal into oil and gas, Hollis M. Dole, Assistant Secretary of the Interior, recently made it clear that coal, which has been taking a back seat to nuclear fission research and study grants, is now coming into its own. Conversion pilot plants are being activated in all parts of the nation.

A UTORADIOGRAPHY would appear to be sim-A pler and less time-consuming for diffusion studies than any of the radioactive tracer techniques commonly employed, namely, the sectioning, surface increase, and surface decrease techniques.' Accord- ingly, it was felt worthwhile to investigate the applicability of autoradiography to self-diffusion measurements, and gold was chosen for this purpose. The radioactive isotope Au'!'' was used, as obtained from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Its radiation consists of p (0.97 mev) and y (0.41 mev) rays, and it has a half-life of 2.69 days. No-Screen X-ray film was found suitable for these experiments: the film has the desired high speed for recording P rays and yet is practically insensitive to y rays. On the other hand, due to the high atomic weight of gold, this metal is a strong absorber for p rays. The

South Bethlehem, Pa. :-In looking at these precipitating launders the idea has come to me that the iron could probably be kept much cleaner if there were laid on the bottom of the . launders some sheet copper, with which the iron would be in contact, and as the solution passed over the tendency would he to precipitate the copper on the sheet copper and thus keep the iron cleaner than it is under present conditions. As soon as a piece of iron becomes coated with copper, its surface becomes inactive, and the presence of a sheet of copper in electrical contact with the iron would tend to precipitate the copper on the sheet copper and to keep the iron clean.

THE analyses given in Table I. were made several years ado at my request at a plant using Lake ores. The, are of two furnaces, one making basic, the other Bessemer pig-they gave 6 casts each in 24 hr., also two flushes of cinder between each cast. They- are offered simply for the sake of reference as, so far as I know, it is unusual to find so frequent fall analyses made and none are on record. The variations iii manganese-content in the first and second flushes on the basic furnace are interesting, if no more than a freak-the first flash being invariably higher in manganese. Equations of the form of the Mott and Jones equations for the absolute thermoelectric powers of metals are derived primarily from a thermodynamic approach. The behaviors of transition thermoelements in common use are then examined and compared with this simple theory. MOTT and ones' derived a general expression for the absolute thermoelectric behavior of metals and alloys using the approach of the solid state physicist. This expression was then applied to specific cases.1,2 The present work develops equations of the same form principally by a thermodynamic approach. These relationships are then employed to gain some insight to the behavior of the transition thermoelements in common use. The United States is rapidly approaching an acute shortage of minerals. According to some observers, this situation may even be more severe than the energy crisis because the US consumes nearly 30% of the world's mineral production. With the mounting competition for world mineral supplies, we can no longer take for granted that foreign mineral products will be available to the US as abundantly as in the past. In 1973, US consumption of mineral raw materials was $35 billion. Of this, $7 billion consisted of imports. Without a drastic reorientation towards the mining of domestic mineral resources, the 1973 $7 billion deficit might mushroom to $100 billion by the year 2000. Thus, a return to domestic sources of raw materials will become absolutely necessary-and will be bucking the trend of the past 25 years, characterized by capital investment for growth in multinational overseas mining operations.

As our society grows in complexity, it becomes more urgently incumbent upon scientists and engineers to bring their experience to bear on the solution, not only of technical problems, but also on socio-economic difficulties. It is to this field that I have directed a large part of my energies. Raw Materials Basic to the Economic Process There are certain premises, frequently overlooked, which bear emphasis. As economics concerns the production, distribution, and consumption of goods, so our whole society is based on raw materials. Without the basic extractive industries of agriculture and mining, there would be no economic problems with which to deal. This principle has been expressed as: "All productivity is based on three factors: (1) natural resources, whose form, place, and condition are changed by the expenditure of (2) human energy (both muscular and mental), with the aid of (3) tools."*

The following quotation is from "Guidelines for evaluation of undergraduate curricula in geological engineering, mineral processing, and mining engineering" prepared by the Committee on Education of SME of AIME. "The objectives of the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), as delineated in its constitution, are: (a) To promote and advance all phases of engineering education with a view to the promotion of the public welfare through the development of the better educated engineer and engineering technician." (Italics added.) The problem is that no one has as yet seriously developed a method of supplying engineering technicians. There were great hopes that the expansion of junior colleges would help satisfy this need. Sadly, they have not; and it appears they are unwilling or unable to supply the need for mineral engineering technologists. Apparently, the junior colleges cannot afford staff for such courses, even when the colleges are located in mining districts.

Still another shadow was cast over coal's largest market-the electric utilities-when President Johnson signed into law the Federal Clean Air Act of 1967. Air pollution-sulfur reduction-was thus brought into sharper focus as one of the central problems of the coal industry. Industry executives testified in both Houses of Congress to enable the lawmakers to develop a workable and economic law. The new legislation calls for the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare to establish air control regions. After the regions are outlined the Department will publish air quality criteria on pollutants. Anticipating this legislation, the coal and utility industries have for the last several years been involved in extensive research programs to develop solutions to the air pollution problem. Even though the coal industry has been under strong attack for its part in adding contaminants to the atmosphere, it is by no means the major contributor.

"The most conservative persons I ever met are college undergraduates." Woodrow Wilson said that in 1905. No one is saying anything like it today. Chaos on the campus was a cliche of the sixties. Since 1905, education has expanded in every direction. Many more people are being educated for much longer periods of time. The school-leaving age has risen from 14 years to 20 years, on an average. Many are in school until after their 25th birthday. On the surface this situation appears all to the good. Our technical society needs a massive yearly infusion of semitrained (or educated, if you prefer) new blood. The efficiency of our economy and our standard of living are tied to high individual productivity which can be achieved only with an educated work force. Our democratic institutions are said to be founded on an educated electorate.

Lack of a system in scheduling the replacement of capital equipment can result in emergency purchases of units which may later be found unsuitable for the job. New York Trap Rock Corp., which produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, was faced with just such a situation some years ago. The company replaced capital equipment only when machinery in use was no longer serviceable, or when there was an obvious need for different equipment. Operating and maintenance costs were generally neglected because an efficient method was lacking. New York Trap Rock has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. Crushed stone output-6 million tons a year-is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Long Island areas by water transport. Customers are contractors with ready-mix concrete and asphalt plants located on the water.
