INTRODUCTION A major segment in a successful heavy equipment maintenance and repair program is the provision of well-laid out and well-equipped shop and service facilities The facilities described here will be those required for a large, high tonnage hard rock open pit mine utilizing rotary drills, shovels, haulage trucks, support equipment, and service trucks. The term support equipment covers the equipment required to support the drill, shovel, and truck operations, these are crawler tractors, road graders, front-end loaders, water trucks, rollers, rubber-tired tractors, etc. Service trucks are the automotive type consisting of rubber-tired over-the- road equipment. The primary structures generally involved in the total maintenance effort are as follows. (1) the main shop with an attached warehouse (the structure could also house the tire and lube shops plus the equipment cleaning stalls), (2) a service station with bulk petroleum product storage tanks, (3) a heating plant, (4) a security station (lf this is a corporate requirement), (5) operating department and employee assembly buildings, and (6) an electrical substation. Under certain conditions, many of these facilities with the exception of the substation could be combined In one or several structures. This arrangement could have a great advantage especially in areas where the heating of the structures is extremely critical.

An oil-emulsion mud, consisting of a mixture of oil-base mud and bentonitic water-base mud, has been used experimentally in drilling 8 of the 35 wells in the Sivells Bend field, Cooke County, Texas. Experience indicates the oil-emulsion mud can be controlled in much the same manner as a water-base mud, and the "drilling" functions of the two types of mud are comparable. The average water-loss for the oil-emulsion mud was 3.8 cu cm per well. When using oil-emulsion mud to drill the last 2000 ft of 7000 ft wells, the mud costs were approximately 2½ times that of water-base mud. There is nothing to indicate well productivities have been affected through the use of oil-emulsion mud. However, drilling time and bit footages were increased and the holes were maintained more closely to bit guage. The apparent advantages gained through the use of oil-emulsion mud in the Sivells Bend field do not appear to justify the increase in mud costs. Introduction until a comparatively few years ago most of the development of drilling mud was directed toward improving the functions of the mud as related to actual drilling operations. The industry has long recognized that one disadvantage of rotary drilling over cable-tool drilling is the possibility of injury to producing zones through the blocking effect resulting from the infiltration of water or mud into the sands. Recognizing this disadvantage, considerable attention has been diverted toward the development of muds that will improve the quality of well com-pletions through the reduction or elimination of water into the sands, but without sacrificing too many of their "drilling" functions and at a cost commensurate with the benefits derived from their use. This phase of mud research has already found practical application, for example, in the development of the Rangely field, Colorado, it appears the use of oil-base mud during drilling-in operations will contribute appreciably toward making this exploitation more profitable. Much of the discussion to follow will be better understood if a brief sketch of the Sivells Bend field is given. The Sivells Bend field, discovered by The Texas Co. in 1944 and still in the process of development, is in a large bend on the Texas side of the Red River about 85 miles north of Dallas. Geologically, the structure is an unsymmetrical anticline, with faulting having contributed to its development. The productive sands are of the Strawn series of Pennsylvanian age, the sands being lenticular in character and varying considerably in development from well to well. At Present there are 35 producing wells in the field, producing from seven different sand lenses. The productive sand lenses vary from 15 to 50 ft in thickness and the individual sands have average permeabilities of from 75 to 375 md. The presently productive sands are encountered at depths of from 6300 to 7300 ft, but testing has indicated that commercial production might be obtained from other sands as high as 5200 ft. Recent experimental evidence has shown that it is often incorrect to neglect the reactions occurring at an interface with respect to the diffusion reactions. By introducing reaction-rate constants and k for the transfer of components 1 and 2 between the a and b phases, a phenomenological description has been devised for the coupled processes of diffusion and in-terfacial reaction. An illustrative example has been analyzed with the aid of a suitable computer program. The results indicate that for kab values on the order of 10'1 cm per sec and Ð values of about 10¯10 sq cm per sec, the interfacial reactions are significant during the first 10 2 to l0 6 sec of a diffusion experiment. Among the observable effects of the interfacial reactions in this case appear to be the burying Kirkendall markers and an anomaly in the initial shifting of these markers. THE study of diffusion between two phases is especially important because of its direct connection to phase transformations. For example, the transformation of austenite to ferrite involves diffusion in the a and ý phases and also an interfacial reaction (trans formation) at the a/? interface. If ferrite and aus-tenite are the two members in a diffusion couple, the same two reactions occur during the diffusion process. The numerical values obtained for the diffusion coefficients and interfacial-reaction constants from diffusion experiments can then be employed to predict phase-transformation behavior. Refinement of the calculations of phase transformation is also suggested by the present method for treating two-phase diffusion. In the recent paper by Nolfi et al.' only the solute com ponent is considered in the interfacial reaction accompanying a phase transformation. The present analysis demonstrates that both components must be considered. It is generally recognized that reactions of some kind must occur at the interface in a two-phase diffusion couple, but usually it is assumed that the interface reaction occurs so rapidly that its effect on the overall process is unobservable because the slower diffusion process determines the kinetics of the process. However, Seith and Heumann 2 pointed out that effects of the interfacial reaction should always occur in the early stages of diffusion, and recently Eifert et al. 3 have shown that interfacial reactions influence the composition and motion of the interface in a/ß Al-Cu diffusion couples during the entire course of prolonged, high-temperature treatments. A general procedure for handling the combined processes of interfacial reaction and diffusion in a binary, two-phase system is to introduce kinetic coefficients for the interface reactions and to develop the system of equations governing the interlinked processes of diffusion and interface reaction. The resulting equations, although not amenable to solution in closed form, can be usefully manipulated by a digital computer. THREE surface activity procedures are in com--L mon use for the determination of diffusion coefficients in solids. In the oldest of these' the activity observed at the original surface is compared before and after diffusion, where all the activity is in a thin, plated layer on the surface before diffusion. Partial absorption of the radiations from active atoms which have diffused below the surface reduces the effective activity after diffusion. The formula employed to calculate the diffusion coefficient is where F, is the ratio of final to initial activity at the surface, measured with identical counting geometry; Z=u3Dt, where D is the diffusion coefficient; t is the diffusion time; and u is the absorption coefficient for the radiation in the solid as defined by Lambert's law. This absorption law implies that all the rays are parallel to each other and normal to the specimen surface. This assumption of a collimated beam used by Steigman, Shockley, and Nix has been adopted by all other investigators and, although it gives results which are approximately correct under restricted physical conditions, it does not represent many actual circumstances. It is the purpose of this paper to show the importance of the divergent rays and to indicate a procedure for taking them into account. In the residual activity method the activity is determined on a series of surfaces ground on the specimen at progressively greater depths in the diffusion layer parallel to the initial surface. Gruzin2 has de- rived a formula for this procedure, which may be put in the form where I is the ratio of the activity measured at a newly ground surface at distance k below the initial surface to the activity at the initial surface measured after diffusion, and K= k/2p Dt. A third procedure involves the autoradio-graphic determination of activity on a plane ground at a small angle to the initial interface through the penetration zone. Aut oradiography can be particularly sensitive to the oblique rays. Unlike most counters which detect essentially all ß particles or X-rays which enter the active volume as a single event, the photographic emulsion may be thin enough so that oblique rays with longer path length in the emulsion produce more darkening than rays which move normal to the film plane. Consider a plane containing a source of radiation uniformly spread over a circle and a point counter located on the perpendicular through the center of the circle. As the counter moves along this line, the total angle 6, at the counter subtended by the specimen will vary. Professor Kim's excellent review article1 on ultimate pit planning contains a statement of the apparently widely held but incorrect belief that "kriging provides information on the confidence limits around the estimate which no other extension technique is capable of supplying." If a geostatistical approach is valid, there are several good reasons for using kriging but uniquely provided confidence limits is not among them. If kriging is possible, then confidence limits can be calculated for any other linear estimate.

THIS paper presents geophysical and subsurface data observed in the vicinity of Shafts No. 1 and and 5 of the National Lead Co. lead mines at Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri, see Fig. 1. The area selected is an excellent example to illustrate the close correlation between geophysical data and geological facts as revealed by drilling and mining. Such close correlations make geophysical applications appropriate to the development of known ore-bodies as well as the exploration for new orebodies.

THE Tralee preparation plant, owned and operated by the Semet-Solvay division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., is located on the Virginian rail- way, near Mullens, Wyoming County, W. Va., and the mine, which is in the Winding Gulf district, produces coal exclusively from Pocahontas No. 3 seam. The property, comprising 4900 acres, is leased from the Pocahontas Land Corp. Prior to 1930 four separate mines were operated in this tract, some having been started about 1916.

Although determining and controlling specific gravity of operating medium in a heavy-media plant manually presents no problem, there are advantages to automatic recording and control. The two installations discussed employ the usual method of measurement. Pneumatic control with band control and reset features is used to regulate dilution water and hence specific gravity. Difficulties have been mechanical in nature and associated with obtaining a proper sample and maintaining tight air connections in bubble-tube piping.

DULUTH ENGINEERS' CLUB The engineers of Duluth, Minn., have taken the first steps to form a Duluth Engineers' Club by a meeting on May 20, at the Kitchi Gammi Club. At present, Duluth has no club embracing all engineers, although the environment is splendid for the growth of an engineers' organization. Within reasonable 'distance of Duluth are over 100 members of the four large national engineering societies, a number of members of the lesser engineering societies, and many non-member engineers. Until the Duluth Association of Civil Engineers was formed, four years' ago, these engineers had no common ground of meeting, and a force representing education, experience, and high ideals lay dormant. About 70 engineers were present at the organization meeting, and favorable responses were received from others who could not be present. F. E. House, President of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad, outlined the objects of the meeting, calling attention to the importance of the engineer in all lines of activity in the war and the splendid qualities of American engineers in France. W. H. Woodbury outlined the plan, stating the three objects of the club as professional, social, and civic. Four plans of membership have been considered: First, an organization for all professional engineers, junior engineers, and associates, with .different status for each; second, an organization of members of the four big national societies; third, an organization of members and a limited number of associates; fourth, professional engineers, only, all on equal standing.

Masjid-i-Su1aiman.—There have been no new developments in the Masjid-i-Sulaiman oil fields during the year 1938. In spite of the age of this field, the fall in dome pressure shows no appreciable variation from the low rate of about 0.3 lb. per sq. in. per million tons net production. Drilling has been limited to deepening old wells and to new wells required for maintenance of production and general reservoir control. The rate of offtake has been reduced over the past few years, partly because of depletion of the oil column, and it is expected that future offtake from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman field will be stabilized for some years at around the present figure of 3,000,000 tons per annum. Haft Ke1.—An exploratory well to test deeper formations in the Haft Kel field has proved the existence of productive conditions in the Eocene, which underlies the Asmari limestone (the main producing horizon). Drilling to the northwest in the white-oil springs area has revealed the presence of a separate structure with productive potentialities. One well with a satisfactory production rate has been completed. Offtake from the Haft Kel field has steadily increased since it first came on to production in 1929. Naft-i-Shah.—Production from this field has continued to supply market requirements in northwest Iran. The policy of returning surplus products to the reservoir, which was adopted at the beginning of 1936, has been continued.

IN rock- or ore-crushing tests all data, in order to be valuable for study and comparison, should be obtained and tabulated under conditions as uniform as possible. The results of many such tests have no value for comparison, because of incomplete data and the lack of uniform conditions, screens and scale of sizing, etc. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a form of standard specifications which may be developed by the Milling Committee and approved by the A. I. M. E. for rock-crushing tests. It is not intended to discuss any theories of rock crushing. Reports of rock-crushing tests should include the following details: 1. Description of the machine employed (jaw or gyratory crushers, rolls, stamps, tube mills, Chilean mills, etc.). 2. Method and material (timber, concrete, etc.) of foundation. Much power is dissipated in the vibration of poor foundations. 3. Locality from which the rock or ore was obtained, and geological, mineralogical, and physical characters of the material. 4. The power consumption of the machine running with no load and with full load, the unit of power being 1 hp, per 24 hr. 5. The capacity of the machine in tons (of 2000 lb.) per 24 hr. 6. The duty in tons per horsepower-day. 7. The screen analysis of feed and product by the proposed A. I. M. E. standard screen scale. On the foregoing statement, the following remarks are offered.

In July 1946 President Truman approved the stock- piling act providing for the accumulation of stocks of strategic minerals in which this country is deficient. Congress also provided huge sums for the purchase of these materials to initiate the program. In order to meet anticipated stock pile goals it will be necessary for the United States to import very large quantities of 70 strategic materials, by far the largest items being minerals and metals. There are no priorities of relative importance in the list, as the lack of any single item may cause industry to fail in its part in national defense. Stock piles of material in a form as close as possible to the ultimate fabricated state represent not only the actual material physically on hand but also "canned" labor, transportation, smelting, refining, and all other steps. Central and South America, together with Canada and Newfoundland, in their normal capacity as sources of supply will be called upon to furnish a sizable pro- portion of the total requirements. No special measures should be arranged for this purpose; it will be more practical to make purchases in accordance with the availability of materials of desired quality, not by reference to geographic area. Much has been said in the past, and may be repeated in the future, concerning the desirability of hemispheric self-sufficiency-both from a resources and from a military security viewpoint. In recent years, with the advent of new steelmaking procedures, the emphasis has turned away from conventional teeming and has been directed toward continuous casting. This paper points out the fact that there are still new methods being considered to decrease the problems and costs associated with conventional teeming. Although Inland has had no experience with the repair of mold lugs, we do find some problem with damaged ears associated with mechanically capped steel. When pouring bottle tops, any crane movement or leak from the pouring nozzle may result in steel over the top of the mold which, in turn, may result in the shearing of the mold lugs during stripping. Recent back pouring practices increase the chances of this occurring. At Inland's steelmaking shops, we have tried to combat this problem by various methods such as burning the steel from around the top of the mold at the pouring stand with oxy-gas torches. Last year, No. 4 BOF began a conversion from round to elliptically shaped bottle top caps. This change has greatly reduced the chance of splashing due to crane swing by increasing the dimension in the direction on normal swing. The answer to this particular problem is, however, tighter control of pouring performance. We are presently engaged in a process of re-education of personnel and experimentation with different materials and designs of nozzles, heads, and sleeves to help us achieve our goal.

THE texture method (utilizing monochromatic copper radiation) was applied to determine the orientation of the columnar grains of two vacuum cast beryllium ingots of 3 in. diam. Samples were mounted in a fixture as illustrated in Fig. 1, which permitted rotation and translation in order to approximate the method used for wires. The specimens were aligned so that the major axes of the columnar grains were parallel. Rotation was around the growth direction. After each translation the specimen holder was rotated 2 deg (1 deg for the samples from the second ingot) until a range of 30 deg on either side of the vertical was covered. The speed of translation was 1 mm per sec. A representative Debye pattern is shown in Fig. 2. The pattern was compared with theoretical patterns for various orientations. Also shown in Fig. 2 is the disposition of reflections on the (10i0), (0002), and (1011) Debye rings for the two possibilities that growth is either in the <10i0> or <ll30> direction. It is apparent that no significant preference for the direction of columnar growth is indicated. It is considered that the lack of a preferred orientation is due to the occurrence of the phase transformation (reported by Martin and oore&apos; to occur above 1250 "C) which masked the original solidification orientation. An experimental air-slide classifier1 has been applied to the de-dusting of ground dolomite in an attempt to produce a grade of -30 +150 mesh (B. S. Sieves) material from a raw material containing 30-35% of the -150 mesh fraction. Air flows varying between 1.5 and 2.5 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen area were used. The throughput of dolomite was between 80 and 100 lbs/h. inch of screen width. The size analyses of the de-dusted material and of the original dolomite are shown in table at right. The proportions of the +100 mesh material in the feed and in the de-dusted products have been used to calculate materials balances, on the assumption that there is no loss, as dust, of this +100 mesh fraction. By interpolation, it can be shown that a de-dusted product recovery of 68.5% will be obtained at an air flow of 2.13 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen area. The feed material contains 68.5% of +150 mesh material, so that if the de-dusting gave a perfectly sharp cut, the product would contain no material less than 150 mesh. Further calculations based on the size analyses, show that, at an air flow of 2.13 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen air, the -150 mesh fraction in the de-dusted product will fall just below the specified maximum limit of 5%.
