THE International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. operates five underground mines and an open pit. Four of the mines, the Frood-Stobie, Creighton, Murray, and Garson, are on the south range of the Sudbury Basin, map above, within a radius of 10 miles of the city of Sudbury, Ontario. The fifth mine, the Levack, is on the north range of the Sudbury Basin, 30 miles to the northwest of the city. The open pit is operating on surface ores of the Frood-Stobie orebody.

THE refining period of an open-hearth heat blends imperceptibly into the finishing period, during which final adjustments are made in slag composition, in bath action and temperature, and in composition of the steel, in order to prepare it for casting into ingots. Operations must be governed by the consideration that alterations in the character of the heat during the finishing period must be held to a minimum. In a broad sense, the finishing and deoxidation period of a heat may be said to be- gin when the action of the last ore addition has ceased, and to end when the teeming of the ingots is completed. INGOT STRUCTLIRES A survey of the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of ingot structure is required because deoxidation treatments during the finishing period control the amount of gas evolved during solidification and consequently determine the type of ingot structure. Four classes of ingots are recognized, de- pending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the steel has been subjected. These types are killed, semikilled, capped, and rimmed; typical examples of their structures are represented by ingots 1, 2, 5, and 7, respectively, of Fig 9-1. The actual ingots from which these cross sections were sketched were all poured to the same height (indicated by the dotted lines) in the same type and size of bottle-top molds. The eight drawings of the figure represent selected types of ingot structure in a continuous series from "dead killed" to "wild," resulting from variations in the total quantity of gas evolved, from none at all to copious amounts, during solidification of the steel in the mold. Flotation is an important example of a chemical process by which one solid may be separated from other solids in a mixture. In contrast to other chemical processes such as leaching and smelting, separation of solids by flotation is characterized by the establishment of contact among three phases. In froth flotation these three phases are the solid to be floated, an aqueous electrolyte solution, and a gas, usually air. The gaseous phase may be re- placed by an organic liquid phase or this organic liquid phase may be added deliberately as a fourth phase. To gain an understanding of the flotation sys- tem, it is therefore necessary to study the chemical and physical properties of surfaces and to establish the effect of changes in composition of the bulk phases on the nature of the three interfaces, solid-gas, solid-liquid and liquid- gas. With very few exceptions inorganic solids are completely wetted by the aqueous phase so that the first step in flotation is to replace partially the solid-liquid interface by a solid-gas interface. This displacement process is accomplished by the addition of suitable reagents to the aqueous phase. The resultant surface reaction leaves the solid surface with a hydrophobic film. Although the primary objective of these reagent additions is to alter the solid surface, chemical reactions between the added chemical species and those species derived from the dissolution of the solids are unavoidable. For a quantitative description of such reactions and for the determination of the feasibility of a proposed reaction, we rely on available thermodynamic data. The application of thermodynamic principles to flotation systems has contributed much to our understanding of flotation. The changes in thermodynamic properties such as free energy and chemical potential are accessible to experimental determination, and a knowledge of their magnitude allows us to develop and predict a chemical mechanism oy which a solid becomes floatable. In this chapter it will be assumed that the reader has a working knowledge of the general principles of thermodynamics and solution chemistry. A complete discussion of the physical chemistry of flotation must include a treatment of solubility relations, complex ionic equilibria, reaction potential, and the elements of electrochemistry, especially those dealing with reversible electrical cells. The principles related to all of these features of the flotation system will not be discussed in this chapter. The discussion will be concerned with the thermodynamics and electrochemistry of surfaces and the electrical double layer model of the interface.

It is not intended to make in the present paper any deduction or to formulate any theories from the results obtained by experiments. The further expenditure of considerable time and labor would be required to obtain a sufficient basis for positive assertions as to the microscopic structure of the different varieties of iron and steel, and the structural changes which take place in them. It is therefore my purpose at this time to offer simply a synopsis of the general results arrived at in a few months' work, a brief description of apparatus used, and a few hints as to the preparation and preservation of the material which it is intended to investigate. The study of the microscopic structure of iron and steel is not altogether new. Some attention has been given it in both England and Germany. But the foreign publications on the subject have thus far been confined, so far as I am aware, to two papers, one by Herr Martens, of Berlin, contributed to the Verein zur Befoerderuny des Gewerbfleisses and the other a lecture by Dr. H. C. Sorby of Sheffield. Dr. Sorby, it seems, was induced to investigate the subject as bearing on the structure of meteoric iron ; and the results he obtained are certainly very interesting. At the Boston meeting of this Institute, in February, 1883, Mr. J. C, Bayles called attention to the subject in a neat and exceedingly interesting paper, in which the work of Messrs. Martens and Sorby was summarized,* and original suggestions were added. It is at present difficult to say what will he eventually the practical value of the microscope, thus employed, in the sciences of engineering. The role which it seems most likely to play is that of' an adjunct to the testing-machine, and not (as some have supposed) a rival to the chemical laboratory. That it will be a most valuable accessory seems, to say the least, highly probable. I need hardly go at length into the details of preparing the material for examination. For the early conservationists before the first decade of the twentieth century, conservation meant largely the planned preservation of water, forest, soil, and wildlife resources-renewable natural resources-through efficient use. Water was primarily thought of as a resource that must be kept available for humans to enjoy in a recreational sense and as a habitat for wild animals, birds, and fish. Little thought was given to conserving water for actual human or industrial needs. If industry entered the picture it was as an actual or potential polluter of water, which was the basic necessity for drinking and bathing and for outdoor recreation. Even the forests were only held worthy of conservation largely because they were areas in which wildlife could, or should, abound and in which human beings might find relief from the cares and problems of everyday life. Finally, the soil was to be preserved in its natural fertility through proper fertilization, cultivation, and crop rotation; in this the conservation program did enter the realm of the practical. For through soil conservation, the world was to be able to raise increasingly large crops of constantly improved organic foods which the steadily growing population of the earth was to need to survive and improve. Relatively little time, however, was spent on considering what profit the farmers of the world were to make from the scientific farming on which they were to embark. In short, the appeal of the early conservationist program was much the same as that of the entire era of Theodore Roosevelt of which it was a part; it was to the heart rather than to the mind; it was to emotion rather than to reason. Because of the way in which the problem was approached, conservation took on the character of a crusade rather than that of a practical plan for the betterment of man through economically sound methods of improving his environment and the uses he makes of it. Conservation had, then, all the advantages of a stirring appeal to the emotions, but it did not have the lasting results that would have been achieved by a program with a sound economic basis.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. The brasses (using this term to denote all useful proportions of the two constituents) are the most valuable and widely employed of all [ ] nonferrous alloys, because of their high resistance to ordinary corrosive agencies and the very wide range of properties that may be imparted to them by variations in the proportions of the constituents and by variations in mechanical treatment and heat-treatment. Fig. I shows the normal physical properties, as determined by standard tensile tests, of the series when in the annealed condition. Fig. 2 shows the effect of varying amounts of cold-working on an almost pure brass containing 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Fig. 3 shows the effect of annealing at various temperatures on the same alloy. This effect is somewhat modi- [ ] fied by the degree of cold-working to which a brass has been subjected, as shown by Fig. 4. A fourth test, which is empirical, has been found useful because of its simplicity the hot hammer test. Samples 1/2 in. in diameter and 3/4 in. long are placed in a suitable furnace. These are withdrawn one at a time at successively higher temperatures and are subjected to the blow of a drop hammer weighing 50 lb. with a drop of 4 ft. WHEN H. I. Smith joined the Institute back in 1908, he was an instructor in mining and metallurgy at Penn State the college from which he had graduated the year before with a B.S. degree. He had not gone far afield for his education, for he was born, February 15, 1984 at Finleyville, Pa., a small village some fourteen miles south of Pittsburgh and without doubt famous chiefly as H. I.'s birthplace. The summer that he graduated he took a trip to the copper mines Arizona and Mexico and en route worked for four weeks for the Portland Gold Mining Co. at Cripple Creek, Colo., as a mucker and trammer. The next summer he roamed farther afield mines and metallurgical works in Europe. Wishing to see more of Arizona, he left the Penn State faculty early in 1909 and went out to Wenden in that State to become mining engineer and assistant superintendent of something called the Corona Copper Co., with 72 mining claims and a one-mule-powered whim for a hoist. When that job folded he helped build the Santa Fe railroad from Parker. Ariza., to Danby Cialif., and then came back to Pennsylvania to enter Government services as a junior mining engineer with the Bureau of Mines.

Prior to the construction of a 450 tpd concentrator at the Mayflower mine, owned by the New Park Mining Co. and operated by the Hecla Mining Co., the common mining methods were cut and fill, with waste or gob filling and square set timbering with waste fill. Stoping operations were beset with the usual problems related to waste filling methods- storage and handling of fill material from development, costly waste excavations necessary to obtain a portion of the needed waste rock, slow mining cycles due to filling and inefficient ground support. After Hecla Mining Co.'s successful utilization of sandfill in its mines in the Coeur d'Alene district, utilization of hydraulic fill in stoping operations at the Mayflower was a logical development of the modernization plan then in progress. The mine, located in the southeasterly part of the Park City mining district, Utah, is a medium size producer of lead and zinc ores, with gold, silver and copper as secondary minerals. The mine has been producing commercial ore since 1939 from a dual vein system which outcrops at an elevation of 7200 ft in the Wasatch Range. Access to the present mining areas is gained by a 7200-ft haulage tunnel and by an interior, three-compartment main shaft. The present mining horizons are about 2400 ft deep. The average horizontal cut and fill stopes, ranging from 3-15 ft wide and up to 120 ft long, can be classed as small.

ON Thursday, Oct. 9, oil men from far and wide gathered at Beaumont, Texas to participate in a three-day celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the completion of the famous Lucas gusher well at Spindletop field just south of Beaumont, and to pay tribute to Anthony F. Lucas, for whom the Lucas Medal of the A.I.M.E. is named. In the afternoon the gathered host drove to the site of the discovery well to dedicate a 58-ft. granite monu¬ment erected on the spot where the original derrick stood. Representatives of the A.I.M.E. took a prominent part in the dedication ceremonies, giving the two principal addresses of the afternoon's program. Everette DeGolyer, past President, paid a personal tribute to Capt. Lucas, as a pioneer producer, an engineer, and a friend and well wisher of all young engineers. He gave a splendid picture of the useful and full life of Capt. Lucas who always took a great interest in the activities of the Petroleum Division of the Institute, from its inception to the time of his death.

The National Mine Health and Safety Academy near Beckley, W. Va., is dedicated to reducing accidents and improving health conditions in the mining industry through education and training. Though this basic mission remains unchanged, the Academy now serves a much broader mining community than it did when established in the late 1960s. From its original emphasis on training federal coal, metal, and nonmetal mine safety inspectors, the Academy has expanded its programs to reach mining industry and labor representatives, state agency employees, and university students taking mining-related courses. The Academy's resident programs, short courses, seminars, and continuing education courses cover a wide range of subjects and various experience levels, but all have been developed with one idea in mind - to reduce accidents and health hazards through education and training of the widest possible audience.

MECHANIZATION is being developed to some extent in every coal field in the United States and it is rather difficult to say which State or section of the country has made the greatest advancement. Statistics now being compiled for 1928 will show the tonnage mined, the amount of equipment used in each of the coal-producing States, and the comparative tonnages and percentages of total tonnage mined in each of these States, and will reveal which field is making the greatest advancement as far as quantity of production is concerned. However, while the tonnage figures are of great importance there-are other phases of coal-mine mechanization, such as the types of equipment, the mining methods and coal bed conditions, which are of equal interest. The change from hand-mining practices in all of the various operations from the face to the railroad cars is, perhaps, more indicative than any other one thing of the real progress being made.

ON the afternoon of Feb. 20 of this year a new volcano was born in the center of the State of Michoacan, Mexico, about 100 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Creation of this new mountain - forming crater began on an almost flat cultivated field at the south margin of a small basin about a mile in diameter and having an altitude of approximately 6800 ft. above sea level. This basin is connected to a gently inclined plain that forms the Parangaricutiro valley, the chief town of this municipality, bearing the same name as the valley, being situated three miles from the site of the new crater. The village of Paracutin, from which the new volcano received its name, is about one mile to the northwest of the crater. From the City of Mexico to the volcano is a distance of 330 miles. The paved highway running from Mexico City to Guadalajara, by way of Toluca and Morelia, is left at Carapan; from here another paved branch highway goes to Uruapan. The town of Paracutin is reached by a narrow dirt road 18 miles from Uruapan and connects with a road leading to Parangaricutiro where horses may be hired for a 40-minute trip to a place where visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the volcano. It is possible to get within half a mile of the point of eruption in this manner.

THE technical material in hand and the plans under way for the 141st meeting of the Institute clearly indicate a well-rounded program of unusual excellence. The meeting will be held in the Engineering Societies Building, Feb. 15 to 18, and while it is too early to announce definitely the time of the various sessions much of the detail has been organized up to that point. Every group in the Institute membership will find much of special interest, and several features should prove generally attractive. The various committees in charge of the lighter side of the meeting are hard at work to emulate the standard established last February In this connection and in this paragraph it will suffice to say-there will be a Smoker-dinner! The Committee on Mining Methods plans two sessions for which these papers are in prospect:

WHEN scientific literature was lacking or meager, research necessarily meant laboratory investigation above all else. Today, scientific literature has attained tremendous proportions, and the volume increases at a much faster rate than it is digested and efficiently utilized. For that reason the present-day research worker should spend much more time in the library, and correspondingly less in the laboratory, than is the general custom. Library research would overcome two serious errors often made by scientists: duplication of work described completely and failure to appreciate inventions described almost verbatim in the literature. To emphasize these failings that often occur in present-day research, consider a hypothetical scientist as he conducts his search from inception to the stage where it is made available to the public by patent or other publication.

Some 15 years ago, Dr. Adolf Schmidt, director of the Magnetic Observatory in Potsdam, Germany, developed an instrument, which was a modification of Lloyds balance, for the measurement of the vertical component of the earth's magnetism in the field. There was a keen demand for this because (1) it was desirable to have a field instrument that would measure the component of the earth's magnetism which stands in the closest and simplest relation to the configuration of the subterranean magnetic formations-the vertical component; (2) it was desirable to have an instrument that was not only more sensitive but also more reliable than the existing vertical magnetometers (the dip needle, for instance). The application of the magnetometer in oil geology demanded such an instrument, because the magnetic disturbances produced by most types of magnetic formations associated with the occurrence of oil (salt domes, faults, anticlines with crystalline core, etc.) are too small to be detected with the ordinary dip needle. The writer can prove, by some investigations recently made for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, that these instruments may be used also to very great advantage in mining, because they are capable of measuring anomalies which are as great as twice the normal strength of the earth's magnetic field. Even for such anomalies, the field balance is more advantageous than the dip needle. First, the instrument rests on a firm support and can be adjusted in the proper azimuth, which insures measurement of the vertical intensity only, without a part of the horizontal intensity, which is very important for the interpretation. The readings give the vertical intensity in linear terms and not as a function of an angle; and the field balance is insensitive to temperature when used with scale values that are adequate for the determination of large anomalies. In another phase of mining, the gold placer work, the field balance has also shown excellent results for which the dip needle is not adequate. What has been said about the dip needle holds also, though to a lesser extent, for two other types of vertical variometers recently used, the Tiberg balance and the Thomson-Thalen magnetometer.

An extensive program of investigation is being carried out at Lehigh University in the study of arcs and arc welds of high-purity iron1, sponsored by the Engineering Foundation. The part of that program reported in the present paper deals with welds made of high-purity iron in an argon atmosphere and for comparison with them welds made of the same iron in ordinary air. Welds of commercial steel also were made in argon and in air. The primary purpose of the study is to discover the basic physical constants of iron welds when not contaminated either by impurities in the iron or by the action of oxygen and nitrogen of the air during welding. Upon these constants can be founded such future studies as will determine what effects the various impurities and alloy elements present in steel have upon its welding characteristics, and what influence is exerted by the action of oxygen and nitrogen. The welding of steel involves such a multitude of variables, both of composition and of procedure, that development in the fabrication of this most important metal has necessarily been slow, wasteful, and in many instances discouraging. In the present investigation, the simplest possible condition has been selected; namely, iron practically free from contamination and a nonparticipating atmosphere, the inert gas argon. This simplification reduces the number of variables to a point where more rigid control of the system is possible. Although this study is significant for the contributions it makes to the science of steel fabrication, yet it is hoped that it will not be without value also in increasing knowledge of the. nature and behavior of iron and steel in general. From the standpoint of open-hearth practice, and to some extent from the standpoint of electric-furnace practice also, the conditions of melting and casting iron in this investigation are extraordinary. Flotation of ores is a practical utilization of the energy that resides in the surfaces of solids and liquids. The best known manifestation of this energy is called surface tension; an equally important, though less apparent, phenomenon is adsorption. This paper reviews some of the recent investigations of these phenomena, and gives the results of certain experiments performed by the authors. Surface tension is a manifestation of energy having its seat at the bounding surface between the adjacent phases of a multiphase system. Thus, at the interface between a liquid and a gas, or between two immiscible liquids, or between a solid and a gas or a liquid, there are forces capable of doing work, their magnitude depending on the nature of the adjacent phases and the extent of the bounding area. These surface forces are inappreciable when the ratio of surface to volume of the adjacent phases is small, but they become powerful when this ratio becomes large, as it does when one of the phases is highly dispersed. Froth flotation, which consists in buoying solids heavier than water to the surface of water by means of gas bubbles, utilizes the force of surface tension to attach the solid particles to the gas bubbles and again to maintain the floating mass of bubbles as a more or less persistent froth at the surface of a pulp for a sufficiently long time to allow its removal. It follows from the second law of thermodynamics that the potential energy of a system in equilibrium is a minimum. Therefore a multiphase system, tending toward equilibrium, will arrange itself in such a way that the total energy of the interfaces will be the least possible. The widespread interest in the alloys of beryllium with copper is due principally to the fact that certain compositions show very favorable precipitation-hardening characteristics and are, in fact, the stronges nonferrous alloys known at the present time. Investigations have been conducted by Masing and Dahl and others on the physical characteristics of ternary beryllium alloys, in an attempt to produce precipitation hardening effects with a smaller amount of beryllium than that required in the binary copper-beryllium alloys (2.0 to 2.5 per cent Be). The results of these investigations show that ternary alloys of beryllium with Cu-Sn, Cu-A1 and Cu-Zn, among others, exhibit promising improrcmc~nts in physical properties after precipitation-hardening treatment and, while the increases in properties obtained are not as high as those reahzed from the binary copper-beryllium alloys, excellent properties arc obtaincd with beryllium contents averagirlg about one-half the amount reqnired in the binary alloys. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the equilibriun relations of certain alloys containing copper, tin and beryllium. The alpha-phase boundary of the ternary system is given for alloys containing from 0 to 1 per cent beryllium. The equilibrium conditions beyond the alpha-phase boundary are presented for alloys containing up to 32 per cent tin and 1 per cent beryllium. The data were collected by means of quenching experiments, microscopic examination and thermal analysis The results of some powder-method X-ray determiniations on the alloys, conducted by Mr. William Mikulas and Prof. Lars Thomassen at the University of Michigan, are used as evidence in this paper. Studies of the effect of composition of steel on hardenability by Grossmann,' and as-quenched hardness by Field2 and by the authors, have made it possible to predict the results of quenching when the composition and cooling rate are known In order to extend the application of the hardenability calculation to the quenched and tempered condition in which steel is finally used, a survey has been made of the hardness changes caused by tempering. From this study a method has been developed for the prediction of hardness and tensile strength of steel in the tempered condition. The method of calculation was developed from Rockwell C hardness tests on quenched and tempered Jominy specimens and is expressed in Rockwell C hardness units. It is of an additive type in which the degree of softening from as-quenched hardness is estimated. Tem-pred properties may be calculated within about plus or minus 5 Rockwell C hardness or plus or minus 15,000 lb. per sq, in. tensile strength. This degree of accuracy is less than that necessary for the control of heat-treatment, but is adequate for the comparative evaluation and selection of alloy steels. The formula indicates that tempered hardness is primarily dependent on as-quenched hardness and, as in the hardening reaction, the progress of tempering is controlled mainly by the carbon content. Alloys tend to retard softening by a secondary hardening mechanism in which the alloy appears to migrate from ferrite to the carbide phase. The factors for the effects of alloys in tempering vary so much from the effects of alloys in hardening that different steels of equivalent hardenability may, after like heat-treatment, differ considerably in tensile strength. Procedure In developing the method for calculating tempered Rockwell C hardness, simple and complex steels were tested over a range from 0.08 to 0'65 per cent carbon and up to 2.68 per cent manganese, 2.18 silicon, 3.50 chromium, 4.94 nickel, and 1.06 molybdenum. The steels were made as small induction-furnace heats at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc' The accuracy of the method was finally checked on a variety of carbon, low-alloy and high-alloy types of heat-treating steels produced under commercial conditions. The method was based on a study of tempered Jominy bars, and its validity was tested by correlation with the center hardness and tensile strength of oil-quenched and tempered bars from 1/2 to 4 in. in diameter. The method of calculation was derived from the differences in Rockwell C hardness between as-quenched and quenched and tempered Jominy specimens. Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it. On the other, or western, side of Hunter's creek (see map, Fig. I), a higher mountain rises, on the slope of which the regular dip of the Triassie or Upper Carboniferous red sandstone strata, alternating with white layers of the same rock, can be clearly seen from town.
