In considering the effects of reducing gases on hot solid copper the following conclusions have been reached. (1) Depth of deoxidation of copper heated in reducing gas is greater the smaller the amount of cuprous oxide originally present in the copper, the range studied being from 0.015 to 0.136 per cent. oxygen. It is suggested that the reason for this difference in depth of deoxidation is that, when the copper is low in cuprous oxide, the reducing gas is diluted less by the gas that is formed in the reaction than when the copper is high in cuprous oxide; and the greater the concentration of the reducing gas the deeper the deoxidation. (2) The rate of deoxidation is much mire rapid at the beginning of exposure than at the end, a condition especially noticeable at temperatures around 900° C.; that is, deoxidation is retarded as the depth penetrated by the reducing gas increases. (3) Within the accuracy of the experiments arsenic in copper up to 0.5 per cent. has no tendency to increase or decrease the action of a reducing gas on the cuprous oxide present in the copper. IN 1912 pieces of 0.365-in. hard copper rod 1/2 in. long were heated in a porcelain tube in an electric furnace, while illuminating gas was passed through. The borate industry is one of the few sectors of the mining and mineral-processing industry which the United States still dominates. Since about 1927, the United States has supplied over half of the world's total boron and borate raw materials, and many of the chemical derivatives as well. Chiefly responsible for this record are companies producing sodium borates from two large deposits in southern California, at Boron (Kramer) and Searles Lake. The sodium borates, or products derived from borax and borax-containing brines, are the preferred borates for industry because they are soluble in water and combine readily with most other chemicals. Calcium borates (or sodium-free compounds) are required for certain end uses, but in general, nonsodium borates are used only where borax is not avail- able. During the past hundred years, the use of boron compounds throughout the world has risen from a few tons per year to the equivalent of about a million tons of B2O3. Leadership in supplying borates has shifted from country to country and from region to region during this period, generally as the result of the development of newly discovered deposits that were better in quality, more accessible, or more economically exploitable than previous sources (Table 1). Primary Products and End Uses The principal borate products offered by primary producers in the United States are listed in Table 2. In general, these products are utilized worldwide by almost all consumers, regardless of the original source of the primary borates. In the United States, the primary borates all originate in southern California. Colemanite is produced as crude or processed crude ore from the Death Valley area and is utilized by the fiber glass and ceramic industries without further treatment. Production from Searles Lake, Calif., is from brines that are processed in chemical plants where borax and other compounds are recovered and the principal borate products are produced. At Boron, Calif., the world's leading producer is mining a deposit of mineral borax and operating a chemical refinery. The mineral borax is mined together with included clay, and refined borax or "lo-mol" is one of the refinery products. The mineral and the chemical compound are identical, Na2B4O7- lOH2O. In addition to ship- ping all major refined borate products from Boron, the company ships semiprocessed ore concentrates to treatment plants elsewhere.

AlloTs of copper and silicon have been known for one hundred years or more but the commercial development of this type of alloy has taken place during the past few years. In 1905, Sperry l proposed the use of copper-silicon alloys for springs and other purposes for which copper-tin bronzes were used. Some attention was given to this proposal at the time but no one succeeded in producing a practical alloy containing more than a fraction of a per cent. of silicon. The equilibrium relations of the copper-silicon system were studied first by Rudolfi2 and later by Sanfourche 3 and Corson. 4 The constitution of the system has also been recently investigated by Matuyama, 5 and in the laboratories of the American Brass Co. by Smith. 6 Some of the physical properties of the copper-silicon alloys have been investigated by Norbury7 and by Geiss and Van Liempt.8 Summarizing the results of various investigators of the constitution of copper-silicon alloys, the solubility reaches its maximium value, 6.7 per cent. silicon, between 721" and '782" C. At 852" (1. the solubility is 5.25 per cent., while at 400" C. it is only 4.1 per cent. silicon. The copper-silicon alloy begins to get so hard at about 3 per cent, silicon that it is difficult to manage. It was found by Jacobs that the addition of manganese to this alloy considerably improved the working

Methods and results of measuring three basic parameters for ground stability control, ground pressure, strata movement, and geomechanical properties of mine rock are presented in this paper. It is found that these parameters can be measured in situ by simple and practical techniques with nonsophisticated and inexpensive instruments. Specifically, a drillhole dilation technique employing a cylindrical hydraulic borehole pressure cell (CPC) was used to determine the modulus of rigidity. Premining ground pressures were determined by pressure convergence tests with a combination of one CPC and two pre-encapsulated flat hydraulic borehole pressure cells (BPC) installed in a single drillhole. Abutment pressures and pillar loading were monitored with BPC's. Differential strata movements and bed separations were measured with self-recording 10-anchor-point extensometers. Roof-to-floor convergence was measured with self-recording convergence meters. Some applications of these in-situ-determined parameters to mine design and ground stability control are also discussed.

THE object of this investigation was to determine whether silver alloys could be used instead of the currently employed insert of high-expansion AVERAGE COEFFICIENT PER DE G. C. A typical example of a piston containing a ferronickel insert is shown in Fig. 1. The high coefficient of expansion of silver made it worthy of consideration, while the small size of the insert would render it use feasible in Germany as an emergency in is- tire. The coefficients of linear expansion of several metals and alloys are as shown in the table above. Obviously the melting point of the insert must be high enough to prevent it from melting when the light alloy is cast around it. This imposes a lower limit of about 850° C. for the solidus of the silver alloy. To avoid deformation of the insert during use a Brinell hardness number of at least 60 appears necessary.

THE conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in property or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest.

FOR a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At -the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture f propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods f manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual -blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position- for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this practice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface f each blade must be chipped too the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy, as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the' work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin f the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days f foundry work and about the same length of, time for the machining. Through the use f the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity, with any particular propeller-wheel design,

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. EXPERIMENTAL work on the properties of high-purity alloys of the copper-manganese-zinc system has necessarily required extensive metallographic work to determine the equilibrium conditions in this system. Previous work on these alloys is fragmentary and, unfortunately, based on alloys made with impure grades of manganese, thus introducing significant amounts of iron, silicon, aluminum and carbon. Since these elements are known to affect equilibrium conditions, it became desirable to re-examine these alloys made from the pure metals. The alpha solid solution field was of particular interest and, therefore, was chosen for the initial work, which was outlined to determine the composition limits of this field. PREVIOUS WORK Heusler1 conducted an extensive survey of the liquid-solid regions of this system and also made an estimate of the solid-phase boundaries at 340°C. The pertinent part of his diagram is given in Fig. I, but it is of limited usefulness, since it applied to a single temperature only and is based on impure alloys under admittedly nonequilibrium conditions. Bauer and Hansen,2 likewise working with impure alloys, have determined the phase boundaries for alphabeta brasses containing small amounts of manganese and indicate an increase in the extent of the alpha field with increasing manganese. This is not in accordance with Heusler or with data obtained on pure alloys.3 They also described a third constituent precipitating in the alpha plus beta field below 350° to 400°C. but did not identify this constituent. Guillet4 and Heike and Ledibur5 have also noted this precipitate Each of these investigators recognized that impurities present in the manganese could and did have an effect on the structure and properties of their alloys. Corson6 in particular pointed out the hardening effects of silicon, aluminum, and carbon in copper-manganese alloys and Heusler reported that his alloys containing more than 25 per cent manganese were extremely brittle. In all probability this brittleness was due to the impurities present. This early work, therefore, should be taken as a general guide for preliminary studies only, and high-purity alloys may be expected to produce different results. The work of the Bureau of Mines laboratories with electrolytic manganese has been briefly summarized by Dean7 but includes only a short section on this system. Later work3 outlined a limited portion of the alpha field in the neighborhood of 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, and 25 per cent zinc. The present work was under-

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

INTRODUCTION - DEFINITION & HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE While this symposium is concerned with comminution which, by definition, relates to all stages of size reduction of an ore body to a form suitable for mineral separation, the electrical drive aspect of the grinding section will receive most attention in contrast to the crushing, screening and materials handling elements of the process. The reason for this is that today's large mills, thirty feet diameter and upwards, present mechanical and electrical problems which require a degree of sophistication in their solution not previously required. The ability to satisfy these demands, so far as electrical technology is concerned, largely results from the development of semi-conductor devices. These can now handle typical electrical distribution power levels within remarkably s m all volumes and with high efficiency when compared with the motor-generator sets, mercury arc rectifiers, rotating amplifiers, magnetic amplifiers and vacuum tubes which were commonly used to provide speed and torque controls as recently as the early nineteen-sixties. The hardware available to the electrical engineer has changed dramatically whereby even the simplest control system formerly using hard-wired relays is now superseded by the program m able logic controller with its computer-like memory containing the sequence of operation, in other words, the software. Reverting now to the mineral process itself, it is assumed that the ore body has been mined using explosives and is delivered to the concentrating plant in its 'run of mine' form. The problem becomes one of reducing the material to a size which will permit an acceptable recovery of the mineral with the most economical use of energy. The size of 'run of mine' material will range from about minus five feet for high tonnage open pit operations to minus two feet for the smaller underground mine. The final reduction in size may range from minus ten mesh to minus two hundred mesh (exceptionally as fine as minus six hundred mesh) depending upon the concentration method and dissemination of the mineral values within the ore. There is no single circuit that satisfies all applications, but the pattern of metallurgical equipment use shown in Table 1 appears discernable from current practice, in general terms.

Blasting safety is a subject that cannot be overemphasized. Two years ago, a study was published describing g a series of fatal blasting accidents which took the lives of ten metal and nonmetal miners during the period of May 1973 to August 1974.1 Each accident was described, and the direct causes were delineated. In each instance, specific MESA safety regulations were violated. Four of the victims were killed by drilling into explosives; two were killed by lingering too long in the vicinity of fuse rounds; two fatalities resulted from improper guarding of shots; one blaster did not retreat far enough to avoid the blast concussion; and another used an improper tester for checking an electric blasting cap. All of these fatalities could have been avoided by adhering to the MESA blasting regulations contained in 30 CFR Part 55 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Open-Pit Mines), Part 56 (Health and Safety Standards-Sand, Gravel and Crushed Stone Operations), and Part 57 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Underground Mines).

AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. WITH capacity of 51,000 tpd, the Morenci concentrator produces approximately 49,000 tons of tailing for final deposition. Disposal involves distribution of thickened tailing to dams in such a manner that solids can be used for dam construction and water can be impounded for reclamation. During early operation, although tonnage treated was lower, it was necessary to use orthodox disposal practices in the areas available for tailing. Trestles mounted on a series of dams, constructed of borrow material, carried the pipelines from which tailing were spigoted behind the dams. When adequate disposal areas were finally established, it became desirable to look for more efficient methods. The idea of placing the distribution pipe or manifold directly on the crest of the dam was advanced in 1945. After a period of testing, that procedure in modified form replaced the older trestle arrangement. Marked economies resulted, and time required to prepare dams for succeeding storage cycles was greatly reduced. The tailing disposal area for the Morenci concentrator lies south and southwest of the concentrator building. Ample storage space is available. A wide valley contains three sharply defined ravines lying on an average slope of 4 pct. The more central of these ravines, and the largest of the three, is known as Morenci canyon, which provides substantially more tailing storage area than the other two. Stargo canyon lies to the west; the other is appropriately named East canyon. Total area of the tailing disposal site is nearly 31/4 sq miles, or about 2000 acres. The storage area in use was somewhat more than 850 acres at the end of 1954, or 16 acres per 1000 tons of tailing to be stored daily. At the present time none of the east side dams are in regular use but they are available in emergency. There are five dams on the west side (in Morenci and Stargo canyons) as well as two auxiliary dams adjacent to No. 4 West and No. 5 West. This has made it possible to concentrate men and equipment in a smaller area with consequent savings in both manpower and machinery. Tailing Thickening: Tailing from the flotation process reaches the thickeners with a solid content of about 18 pct. The launder carrying this pulp is subdivided at a central point into seven launders carrying a proportional share to each of seven tailing thickeners, which are located in Morenci canyon close to the concentrator. Five of these thickeners are 300 ft diam and two are 325 ft diam. Thickeners are of the peripheral traction type and rakes travel at the rate of one revolution in 37 to 39 min. The entire installation provides 500,000 sq ft of settling area, or approximately 101/2 sq ft per ton of tailing to be thickened daily.

The objectives of this investigation were to develop a laboratory procedure in which core discing could be produced under known (and variable) stress conditions, and to study the discing characteristics of several fypes of rock. Discing of rock cores refers to the formation of discs or wafers of relatively uniform thickness which fracture or rupture on surfaces approximately *Fracture is a type of failure in which there is a complete loss of cohesion and fresh surfaces are created. Rupture is a type of failure in which there Is only a partial loss of cohesion. normal to the axis to the core (see Fig. 1). Usually the surfaces of the discs are concave-convex with the concave side toward the collar of the hole. The surface of the fractured discs are like those created by a tension failure (or possibly a shear failure with virtually no normal compressive stress). This phenomenon has been observed by a number of investigators1-5 in the course of diamond drilling in underground mines, especially in areas suspected of being under high stress. The state of stress in the core required to produce discing is not exactly known. Tranter and craggs6 theoretically investigated the stress distribution in an infinite cylinder, subjected to hydrostatic pressure, minus p, from z = 0 to z = 8 and unloaded from z = 0 to z = 8, Fig. 2. The exact solution to this problem shows that a tensile stress develops in the loaded region near z = 0 with the greatest tensile stress on the axis of the cylinder. A tensile stress also developed on the surface of the cylinder at a point just outside of the loaded zone. Jaeger and Cook3 experimentally investigated the discing mechanism by biaxially loading cores in a pressure jacket sealed at the ends by O-rings. According to the Tranter and Craggs theory it would be expected that failure should occur at the pressure discontinuity at the O-rings. The experimental results showed that if the specimen was unjacketed it broke at random points within the pressurized zone and at a pressure somewhat greater than the tensile strength of the specimen, presumably due to the development of a

THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.

REFERENCES Under the heading "Development System for Block Caving under Severe Conditions" a report was presented to this congress regarding a magnesite mine using block caving for several years. On account of the experience gathered in this mine and the results of far reaching exchange of experience, as well as under due consideration of the international literature it is tried to systematically list and briefly discuss the following factors that have to be considered for development and draw control of block caving. 1. NATURAL FACTORS It is self evident that this implies all those circumstances given by nature and which cannot be altered by man. Any mining activity is subjected to those and the success is depending on how far technology can be adjusted to those conditions. Geology Deposits of considerable thickness with rather steeply inclined flat-faced contacts are optimal for block caving. While vertically there is practically no limitation- for the deposit, theoretically, the smallest horizontal basis apt for operating block caving is the minimum area necessary to get the rock to completely cave in by undercutting and drawing. Practically, only consider- ably bigger main dimensions are found, mainly because of technical factors (machinery and equipment) and economic factors (cost ratio of exploration vs. development, danger of contamination).
