Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.'-' In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:' /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d'Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. In fact, away from the interface, the electric fields are proportional to the square roots of the resistivities:

THE problem of sheet metal formability is one which has received a vast amount of attention during recent years. In spite of the great amount of study and experimental work which has been devoted to this problem, many of its fundamental aspects are still not well understood. No generally satisfactory test has been developed which is capable of providing a reasonably adequate evaluation of sheet metal formability, particularly in borderline cases. Anomalies persistently arise in which a lot of supposedly satisfactory material exhibits excessive breakage when formed. This lack of suitable technological tests greatly hinders the design of new parts and the substitution of new materials in parts of existing design, frequently necessitating considerable costly trial and error experimentation on an actual production basis. When, at the beginning of World War II, it became apparent that mass production methods of forming would be required in the aircraft industry if the large numbers of military aircraft needed were to be supplied, renewed attention was focussed on the problem of sheet metal formability. It was widely recognized that the formability requirements placed on sheet metals had been steadily increasing in severity through the years, especially as greater and greater emphasis was placed on streamlined designs with the resultant freer application of doubly curved surfaces. The recent advent of several new high strength aluminum alloys of more limited formability than some of the older alloys also served to emphasize the need for new approaches to the problem. It seemed evident that progress in the technology of sheet metal forming would depend to a great extent on the development of more reliable criteria for the evaluation of formability. Although the problem is admittedly very complex, the most logical approach appeared to be through studies of the fundamental material properties of sheet metals, especially under complex stress conditions simulating those prevailing in actual forming operations. Most previous investigations have failed to make full use of existing knowledge of fundamental material properties, and in many instances have attempted correlations with properties which are now recognized as being ambiguous in nature. This investigation was undertaken, therefore, with the aim of developing methods for the study of the flow and fracture of sheet metals under combined stresses, and of making use of such methods as might be developed in

The importance of dissolved oxygen as a principal reagent in the refining of liquid steel and the necessity for its removal in the finishing of many grades have stimulated numerous studies of its chemical behavior in the steel bath. From the thermodynaniic viewpoint the essential data are those which determine the free energy of oxygen in solution as a function of temperature and composition of the molten metal. A number of experimental studies have been reported in recent years from which the free energy of oxygen in iron-oxygen melts can be obtained with a fair degree of accuracy for temperatures not too far from the melting point. Certain discrepancies remain, however, which imply considerable uncertainty at higher temperatures; also several sources of error were recognized in the earlier studies. It has been the object of the experimental work reported in this paper to reexamine these sources of uncertainty and to redetermine the equilibrium condition in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The reaction and its equilibrium constant are: H2 (g) + Q = H2O (g); K1 _ PH2O / [1] Ph2 X % O Here the underlined symbol Q designates oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The activity of this dissolved oxygen is known to be directly proportional to its concentrationl,2 and is taken as equal to its weight percent. The closely related reaction of dissolved oxygen with carbon monoxide has also been investigated:3,4,5 co (g) +O = CO?(g); K _ Pco2___ [2] K2= pco X % O [2] The two reactions are related through the wat,er-gas equilibriuni: H2 (g) + CO2 (g) = CO (g) + H2O (g); K2 = PCO X PH2O [3] PH2 X PCO2 and with the aid of the accurately known equilibrium constant of this reaction, it has been shown5 that the experimental data on reactions [1] and 121 are in fairly good, though not exact, agreement. Experimental Method Great care was taken to avoid the principal sources of error of previous studies, namely, gaseous thermal diffusion and temperature measurement. The apparatus was designed to provide controlled preheating of the inlet gases and to permit the addition of an inert gas (argon) in controlled amounts, two measures found to be essential for elimination of thermal diffusion. A known mixture of water vapor and hydrogen was obtained by saturating purified hydrogen with water vapor at controlled temperature. This mixture, with the addition of purified argon, was passed over the surface of a small melt (approximately 70 g) of electrolytic iron in a closed induction furnace. After sufficient time at constant temperature for attainment of equilibrium the melt was cooled and analyzed for oxygen. GAS SYSTEM A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Commercial hydrogen is led through the safety trap T and the flowmeter F. The catalytic chamber C, held at 450°C, was used to convert any oxygen into water-vapor. A by-pass B with stopcocks was provided so that the hydrogen could be introduced directly from the tank to the furnace when desired. From the catalytic chamber the gas passed through a water bath W, kept at the desired temperature by an auxiliary heating unit, so that the gas was burdened with approximately the proper amount of water vapor before it was introdvced into the saturator S. All connections beyond the catalytic chamber were of all-glass construction. Those connections beyond the water bath were heated to above 80°C to prevent the condensation of water vapor. After the saturator, purified argon was led into the steam-hydrogen line at J, and finally the ternary mixture was introduced into the furnace. THE SATURATOR The saturator unit comprised three glass chambers, as shown in Fig 1, the first two chambers packed with glass beads and partially filed with water and the third empty. Each tower had a glass tube with a stopper attached for the purpose of adjusting the amount of water in it. The unit was immersed in a large oil bath, which was automatically controlled with the help of a thermostat relay to constant temperature, ± 0.05ºC, using thermometers which had been calibrated against a standard platinum resistance thermometer. The performance of the saturator over the range of experimental conditions was checked by weighing the water absorbed from a measured volume of hydrogen; the observed ratio was always within 0.5 pct of theoretical.

The distribution of lead between phases in the Ag-Sb-Te system was studied using microautoradio -graphy. Two compositions were investigated, both containing an intermediate phase Known as silver antimony telluride as the major phase, and one containing AgzTe and the other SbzTes as the minor phase. For both compositions, two thermal treatments were used: nonequilibrium solidification from the melt and long equilibration anneals of the as-solidified structure. For each composition, lead was segregated in the minor phase of the as-solidified structure, but was distributed in the matrix after anneal. The electrical resistivity and carrier type were insensitive to the distribution of lead in the two-phase structure. ThERE has been considerable interest in the Ag-Sb-Te system because of its thermoelectric properties. The major interest has been in compositions on the vertical section between AgzTe and SbzTes, particularly the 50 mole pct SbzTes composition AgSbTez (compositions are conveniently expressed as mole percent SbzTes along the AgzTe-SbzTes section). One of the major problems in the proper evaluation and utilization of this material is the inability to control the electrical properties through impurity additions: all alloys prepared to date have been p-type, even with the addition of large amounts of impurities. It has been shown Wit all the compositions previously studied contain an intermediate phase of the NaCl st'ructure as a major phase (denoted by b) and a second phase, either AgzTe or SbzTe3, as a minor phase.'-3 One explanation for the unusual electrical behavior of this material is that the impurity additions have a higher solubility in the second phase than in the matrix; the impurity would segregate to the second phase, leaving the bulk matrix essentially free of impurity.4 In order to investigate this mechanism with a specific impurity element, the distribution of lead between the two phases was determined using autoradiography. Lead 210 was chosen because of the suitability of its 0.029 mev 0 particle for autoradiography and also because of the interest in lead as an impurity in this system.5'6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two compositions were taken from the vertical section between AgzTe and SbzTes, 50 mole pet SbzTes (Viz. AgSbTez) and 75 mole pct SbzTes, in which AgzTe and SbzTes appear, respectively, as the minor phase. Lead containing radioactive lead (pb210) was added to the above compositions to provide a concentration of 0.1 wt pct Pb. The material was placed in a graphite crucible in a quartz tube which was then evacuated and sealed. The samples were melted and solidified by cooling at a rate of 8°C per min and then removed and prepared for microa~toradiography. After autoradiographic examination of these samples, they were again encapsulated and annealed in an isothermal bath at 300°C for a number of days and prepared for examination. An alternate method of preparation employed a zone-melting furnace; the molten zone traversed the sample at a rate of 1.2 cm per hr and the solid was maintained at a temperature of 500°C both before and after solidification. This treatment had the same effect as solidification at a slow rate followed by an anneal for several hours at 500°C. In order to obtain the best resolution, thin sections of the alloy were prepared by hand lapping to a thickness of approximately 20 p. Other samples were prepared for examination by lapping a flat surface on the bulk sample. The resolution, although somewhat better in the former procedure, was adequate in both instances and the majority of the samples were treated in the latter fashion. A piece of autoradiographic film (Kodak Experimental SP 764 Autoradiographic Permeable Base Safety Stripping Film) was stripped from its backing, care being taken to avoid fogging due to static-electrical discharge. A small amount of water was placed on the sample, the film applied emulsion side down on the surface of the sample, and the sample and the film dipped into water in order to assure smooth contact. After drying, the film was exposed for 2 to 5 days, the period of time selected to give the best resolution. The film was developed on the specimen and fixed and washed in place. Stress corrosion cracking of two heats of 18 pct Ni maraging steel in rod form immersed in an aqueous solution of 0.6N NaCl at pH 2.2 has been studied on un-notched specimens stressed in a hard tensilf machite. Austenitizing temperature in the range 1830 to 1400 F has been shown to have a marked influence on the propensity to crack, the loulest austenitizing- temperature producing the greatest resistance to failure. In the nzosl susceptible conditions, the cracks followed the original austenile grain boundaries; but when tlze steels zcere heal treated to inproze their resistance to stress corrosion, the cracks becatne appreciably less branched and slzouqed significant tendencies to become trans granular. Electron metallography of the steels indicated the presence of snzall particles, possibly of titanium carbide, along- the prior austenite grain boundaries and these particles u:ere more readily detectable in the structures that were most susceptible to cracking. Crack propagation rates, which appeared to be dependent upon applied stress and structure, were usually in tlze reg-ion of 0.5 mm per hr and may, therefore, be e.xplained on tlze basis of a purely electrochetnical ,nechanism. However, there is some ezliderzce from fractography that crack extension may be assisted by ttlechanical processes. Anodic stit)zulation reduced the tiwe to fracture, although cathodic currents of small magnitudes delayed cracking-; further increase in cathodic current resulted in a sharp drop i,n fracture litne, possibly due to the onset of hydrogen ewbrittlement. THE use of the high strength maraging steels, with their attractive fracture toughness characteristics, is restricted because of their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in chloride solutions. Although this limitation has resulted in investigations of the stress corrosion susceptibilities of these steels, there have been few systematic studies aimed at defining the various parameters that determine the level of susceptibility. It is the case that the usual tests have been performed with the object of defining some stress or time limit, on unnotched or precracked specimens, within which failure was not observed,' but while such results may be of some use in design considerations, they are necessarily concerned only with the steels as they currently exist and not with their improvement to render them more resistant to stress corrosion failure. This omission may be considered unfortunate because the indications are that stress corrosion in maraging steels shows dependence on structure in following an intergranular path, and since experience with other systems of intergranular stress corrosion crack- ing is that susceptibility may be varied by modifying heat treatments, a similar effect may be expected with maraging steels. It is sometimes from such observations that a fuller understanding of the mechanism of stress corrosion crack propagation begins to emerge, leading in time to the development of more resistant grades of material. The present work was undertaken to study only one aspect of the influence of heat treatment upon the cracking propensities of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel, namely the effect of austenitizing temperature, although certain ancillary measurements and experiments have been undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Most of the measurements were made on a steel, A, having the analysis shown below, although a few results were obtained on a steel, B, having a slightly different composition. Both steels were supplied in the austenitized condition, A as 3/8-in-diam rod and B as 1/2-in.-diam rod. Cylindrical tensile test pieces were machined from the rods: the overal length was 2 1/2 in., the gage length 1 in. and the diameter 0.128 to 0.136 in. The stress corrosion tests were carried out with the specimens strained in tension in a hard beam testing machine, the necessary total strain being applied to the specimen over a period of about 30 sec, after which the moving crosshead was locked in position and the load allowed to relax as crack propagation proceeded; the load relaxation was recorded. The load was applied after the specimen had been brought into contact with the corrosive solution, the latter being contained in a polyethylene dish having a central hole through which the specimen passed, leakage being prevented by the application of a film of rubber cement. The specimen was in contact with the solution for over half of its gage length and the solution was exposed to the air during testing. The solution was prepared from distilled and deionized water to which NaCl was added, 0.6N, and the pH adjusted to 2.2 by HCl additions. The composition of the solution

A critical literature review leads to a descriptive model of tumbling mill operation based upon energy partition concepts and the necessary requirements for particle fracture. As grinding proceeds into the ultra-fine region, conditions which are of little significance during normal operations gradually become controlling. These involve increasing resistance to fracture and an increasing tendency to aggregate as particles become smaller, and a growing fraction of the power input being consumed fruitlessly. The result is that fineness asymptotes to a maximum value as comminution proceeds indefinitely; thus where t is time, p and n are experimentally determined parameters, and Ø is a measure of fineness, which is presumed to be proportional to specific surface area, or proportional to the reciprocal of the size modulus (provided that the distribution modulus remains constant with time), or both. Ø, is the asymptotic value of Ø and is a measure of the grind limit. A method for its graphical determination is given. In a previous paper1 the physical and mathematical principles requisite to a study of the role of energy in comminution were reviewed. The micro-process of comminution — or the comminution event — can be investigated in terms of (a) the magnitude of the force-field localized around the individual particles which gives rise to the stresses generated in the particles, which in turn induces their fracture, and (b) the distribution of fragment sizes, should the event prove fruitful. The entire fragmentation operation can be considered to be the totality of its individual events, and in order to obtain a single independent variable of the process it is necessary to transform and sum the local stresses in terms of energy.1 This energy, however, will account for only a fraction of the energy input to the comminution process, the actual magnitude depending upon the kind of mill and several related factors. From the comminution viewpoint the primary function of a mill is that of stressing as many as possible of the individual particles of the charge to failure, with the maximum economy of energy expenditure. This is difficult indeed to achieve, for stressing a particle does not always break it, while the overwhelming portion of the energy input is involved with various internal mill processes which — almost incidentally — determine the magnitude, frequency, and manner in which the forces are applied to the particles. Essentially, these processes depend upon the mill dimensions, loading and speed, and they may be little affected whether fracture occurs or not. These processes must be delineated if a complete description of the role of energy in comminution is to be given; the energy account sheet1 (Fig. 1) in showing how the energy is partitioned for the requirements of the several functions it performs, provides a framework for the development of a model of the comminution process. Actual numerical values for the variables appearing in Fig. 1 will depend upon the mill, materials, and operating conditions. A possible general relationship between the variables will be suggested in this paper. Before proceeding further, a cautionary note must be issued. It was pointed out in an earlier paper' that while energy input is not changed by increasing the power and decreasing the time in the same proportion, and vice versa, the results of the process in terms of particle fineness may be different. Thus, although energy is chosen as the independent variable of a comminution process, it is not absolutely independent, and care must be exercised to ensure that it is used within its range of valid application. Time has the necessary independence, and it will be used in place of energy where it is appropriate. The residence time in a mill is usually of the order of minutes. Under these conditions the particles are subjected to "... a relatively constant fracture producing environment".2 However, under the more rigorous conditions of greatly extended time, which pertain in ultra-fine grinding, indications are that the fracture producing environment no longer remains constant; this is the major subject of this paper. At this extreme limit the mill is probably taxed to its utmost, and at the same time the bulk material properties are becoming closer to ideal, while the physico chemical effects associated with surfaces, edges and corners are multiplying. Perhaps no other mineral commodity in this volume has as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Recent. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1981 about 644 million tons were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses, with emphasis on developments since 1960. In doing so we borrowed extensively from our report on the applied geology of limestone and dolomite (Rooney and Carr, 1971). The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired down in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information. Geology Mineralogy The principal carbonate rocks used by industry are limestone and dolomite. Limestones are sedimentary rocks composed mostly of the mineral calcite (CaCO3) and dolomites are sedimentary rocks composed mostly of the mineral dolomite (CaCO3 • MgCO3). Aragonite (CaCO3), which has the same chemical composition as calcite but a different crystal structure, is economically important only in modern deposits, such as oyster shells and oolites. Aragonite is metastable and alters to calcite in time. Some other carbonate minerals, notably siderite (FeCO3), ankerite (Ca2MgFe (CO3)4), and magnesite (MgCO3), are commonly found associated with limestones and dolomites but generally in minor amounts. To any one acquainted with the practical conditions surrounding the mining engineer and mine-manager, especially in this country, the presentation to the American Institute of Mining Engineers of a paper on the above subject will need no explanation. The members of this profession are continually called upon to design and erect, both above and underground, structures which involve the use of beams. Not to mention the various buildings connected with large mining operations, I need only refer, in support of this statement, to trestles, derricks, headworks, etc., on the surface, and to timbered stations and other spaces of large span in the mine-workings. Notwithstanding the rapidity with which iron and steel are replacing wood in the construction of large buildings, there will always be cases in which the use of metal will be unadvisable. Especially will this be true in districts remote from large cities. Works of temporary character will continue to use timber. High freight-charges, the liability of delays in delivering iron, and the temporary character of many of the structures, will for many years to come make it advantageous for the mines west of the Mississippi and on Lake Superior to construct their buildings almost exclusively of wood. The timber-resources of the country are decreasing so rapidly that already the engineer finds difficulty at times in obtaining beams of large size. This difficulty will steadily increase, and will force the constructor to resort more frequently to built-up beams, such as have long been used in Europe, owing to the difficulty of obtaining there such large sizes of timber as have

At a time of great antiquity when our Yomato tribe had not yet found its way throughout the country, there lived in Japan barbarous tribes of the stone age, whose dwellings were vertical caves covered with roof's of twigs and weeds. In a cave lately discovered at the village of Morita, 10 miles west from the port of Aomori, there were found pieces of micaceous iron-ore and psilomelane, with oval holes pierced from both sides. Apparently these objects were regarded as ornaments or curios, without being applied to any practical use. Among the traditions given in the Nihonshoki, an ancient history of Japan, there is one relating to the mining industry. According to this tradition, in the mythological age Izanami-no-Mikoto gave birth to Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, god of mines, and Amaterasu-Okami (the sun-goddess) was armed with swords. It came to pass at one time that she concealed herself in Ama-no-Iwato ("Heavenly Cave"), and several gods made contrivances to entice her out. Among them, Ishikori-dome, a smith, made a mirror with copper obtained from the Ama-no-Kagoyama, by means of a pair of bellows known as the Ama-no-habuki, which was made of a deer-skin. It is recorded also that Susanb-no-Mikoto, her younger brother, observed the abundance of gold and silver in Korea, where his descendants were to reign, and urged them to provide themselves with boats to convey them across the Sea of Japan. Introduction Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these areas has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generaly have been short in length, although where methane drainage operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the federal government, methods have also been developed for draining coal seams of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes. Development of methane drainage has recently been encouraged by the potential use of the drained methane as a commercial energy source, with a need, therefore, to adequately organize a collection system, separate from mining the seam for coal. This has already been successfully accomplished, for example, in the Federal No. 2 mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. starting in 1975 (Johns). However, whether the system gains access to the coal through horizontal drilling from a pre- existing mine or via access through a separate shaft from the surface, long horizontal holes are required to adequately tap the methane reserve. It is to this regard-the actual drilling of the horizontal holes-that this paper is directed. It will examine potential benefits that may accrue, both in conventional horizontal hole drilling from a mine site underground, and also in drilling from the surface if a high pressure water jet drill is used to drill the degasification holes. Long Hole Drilling from an Underground Site Personnel from the Bureau of Mines have recently examined methods for conventional drilling of long horizontal holes to gain access for methane drainage. They have shown that it is possible (Cervik, Fields, and Aul) to drill out some 610 m using a conventional drilling system. Three types of bit were used in the program and by alternating between a drag bit, tricone bit, and plug bit, advance rates of between 0.6-3.6 m/min were achieved. Hole diameters varied from 7.6-9.2 cm in surface tests at bit thrusts of 1360 kg. A hole was then drilled and maintained in relative alignment within the coal seam for a distance of 640 m. Thrust levels had to be lowered to between 363-680 kg across the bit. Because the loads were smaller than those used in the surface trial, advance rates in the hole were of the order of 10-38 cm/min. The thrust level was lowered since it was found that the level of the thrust controlled the inclination of the drill so that, for example, a thrust of 363 kg caused the hole to incline downward, while at greater than 544 kg the hole inclined upward with the 9-cm-diam bit. Thrust levels increased 227 kg when the hole diameter was raised to 9.2 cm, although in such a case penetration rates in excess of 56 cm/min could be achieved. Horizontal Water Jet Drilling of Coal The University of Missouri-Rolla has recently undertaken research for Sandia Laboratories on the use of high pressure water jets as a means of drilling through coal. The initial experiment in this program called for drilling a hole horizontally into a coal seam from the side of a strip pit using water jets as the cutting mechanism. A very simple setup [(Fig. 1)] was used in this program and a 15-m hole was drilled at an approximate drilling speed of 1.2 m/min. The nozzle was designed so that the hole dimension was approximately 15 cm across [(Fig 2)] and the thrust was maintained at levels below 91 kg in moving the drill into the coal face. The system used was very crude and comprised a high pressure water jet drill enclosed within a 5.7-cm outer diameter galvanized water pipe to provide rigidity to the drilling system. This pipe sufficed to maintain hole alignment over the 15-m increment. While it is premature to make long-term predictions on ultimate applicability of this sytem to long hole drilling, certain inherent advantages of water jets can be delineated from research results and suggest considerable advantage to further research in development of this application. High pressure water was supplied at approximately 62 046 kPa from a 112-kW high pressure pump, with a 83 L/m flow through the supply line to the nozzle. The drilling system consisted of a nozzle rigidly attached to the front end of the galvanized piping. The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent, or at least delay, mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the form of calcined bones at least 2000 years ago (Anon., 1964), and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilization in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 Mt of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows: marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits requiring apatite carbonate mineral separation. [ ] Guano, mostly from Chile and Peru, accounts for 0.1% of the total world production, and the calcium phosphates from Ocean, Nauru, and Christmas Islands and the aluminum and iron phosphates from Brazil and Aruba account for less than 4% of the world production and are thus not considered in this classification (Lawver, et al.). At present, marine phosphorite deposits account for about 75% of the world's production; the igneous deposits account for 20%. The igneous deposits low in carbonate minerals are easily concentrated by crushing, grinding, and apatite flotation. The most important igneous deposits are those of the Kola Peninsula, USSR (Woodrooffe, 1972). The igneous deposits high in carbonate materials are of corn appreciably more difficult to beneficiate, but they have been concentrated by froth flotation for a number of years. An interesting but rather complicated flowsheet of this type is at Phalabonva, in the Republic of South Africa (Lovell, 1976). The Phalaborwa deposit is an igneous complex of pyroxenite with a central core of carbonatite surrounded by a serpentine- magnetite-apatite rock called phoscorite. The phoscorite containing about 10% P2O5, 35% magnetite, and 35% calcium magnesium carbonate is currently being processed. The process involves comminuting the material for fiberation and subjecting it to a copper float using a potassium amyl xanthate as collector and triethoxybutane as a frother followed by a magnetic separation of the tailings to produce a feed for phosphate flotation. This process produces a phosphate concentrate containing greater than 36% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery ranging from 75 to 80%. Considerable success has been claimed for recovering apatite from carbonate-bearing ores at the Jacupiranga Mine of Serrana S/A (Silva and Andery, 1972). The carbonatite currently being mined contains an average of only 5% P205 and is concentrated using a unique flotation process (Andery, 1968) to yield 96% P205 concentrates. The ore contains about 12% apatite, 5% magnetite, 80% calcite plus dolomite, and minor amounts of phlogopite, olivine, zircon, ilmenite, and pyrochlore. Feed preparation consists of crushing to -31.75 mm (-1 M in.), rod milling in closed circuit with hydrocyclones to about 92% (-50 mesh), and two-stage cyclone desliming of the -50 mesh sands at 20 m. Weight recovery in the deslimed feed is normally 85 to 88% and the corresponding P2O5 recovery is usually about 90%. The deslimed feed is conditioned at 60 to 70% solids for 15 min at pH = 8-10 with 0.6 kg/t of causticized starch for iron oxide and calcite-dolomite depression. The conditioned slurry is diluted to 20 to 30% solids, about 0.2 kg/t of fatty acid or soap collector is added to the conditioner discharge, and the reagentized ore is subjected to rougher-scavenger flotation with additional fatty acid added to the scavenger float. The scavenger concentrate is returned to rougher circuit distributor, and the rougher concentrate froth is subjected to two stages of cleaner flotation to yield a final apatite concentrate analyzing 36 to 38% P205. Flotation recovery of P205 is, in general, above 90% when treating fresh carbonatite. The high-carbonate flotation tails normally analyze 1 % P2O5 or less and are suitable for portland cement production. The marine deposits. Types 1 and 2 of central Florida are representative of enormous reserves of phosphate rock that will undoubtedly account for much of the world's production in the near future. Until very recently the sedimentary deposits high in carbonate minerals (Type 2) have not been considered reserves due to the difficulty in making a francolite-carbonate separation. Although no commercial plant has yet been built to beneficiate Type 2 ore, laboratory and pilot plant data indicate the process is viable. If so, the reserves of Florida and similar deposits throughout the world will be substantially increased. A discussion of the beneficiation of these two types of sedimentary deposits and the relation of the resulting concentrates to the fertilizer industry of the United States is the subject of this paper.

This plant is situated in the borough of Pottstown, on the banks of the Schuylkill river, between the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, on a plot of about 125 acres, most of which is reserved for future extensions. About 45 acres are to be used for houses, 40 of which have already been built. The accompanying plan will give a clear idea of the general arrangement of the works. Beginning at the lower or eastern end, the first building is the basic-cinder grinding-plant. At present, it consists of a 2000 mm. Jenisch ball-mill (Kugelfallmühle) similar to those used so extensively for grinding basic cinder in Europe. It was built by Herman LÖhnert, of Bromberg. The mill is very simple in design, and efficient in execution. About 13 horse-power is required to run it, and the average output is 20,000 pounds in 10 hours. The best work we have done is 29,000 pounds in 10 hours, with perfectly dry cinder. From 95 to 98 per cent. of the product will pass through a sieve with 100 meshes to the inch, while from 70 to 75 per cent. will pass through a 150-mesh sieve. The mill has been in service since last March, part of the time on double-turn, and the renewals and repairs have been very slight. The product of the plant is sold as a fertilizer. It runs from 18 to 24 per cent. in phosphoric acid, about 14 of which is reverted. The merits of this fertilizer were explained by Mr. W. H. Morris, at the Baltimore meeting of February, 1892 (Trans., xxi., 232), and by Mr. W. B. Phillips, at the Birmingham meeting of 1888 (Trans., xvii., 84). The results obtained by its use in Europe, where over 600,000 tons were used last year, are well known. Near the cinder-grinding plant will be situated the new machineshop, which is now being erected. The next buildings contain the brick-making plant and ovens.

THE remarkable outflow of natural gas recently developed in Western Pennsylvania, and along the valley of the Ohio and its tributaries, has called attention to an important series of patents for improvements in glass-fnrnaces and the manufacture of glass, which the brothers Siemens have made since 1872. The basement-patent of this series, is No. 127,806 of the U. S. Patent office, and is of date June 11th, 1872. This has been followed by eleven other patents (including one re-issue), all for improvements in glass-furnaces, or methods of manufacture, of which the latest is of date July 11th, 1882. FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. Discussion of the Paper of Albert R. Ledoux, read at the Atlantic City Meeting, February, 1904. ARTHUR JARMAN, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia' (communication to the Secretary*): Some remarks upon. Dr. Ledoux's interesting paper from one who has not visited America may, I hope, be of interest to members. It appears to me that there is considerable difference between the training of the American and of the British mining engineer. Not that the subjects are different, but rather in the way in which they are handled, the illustrations being, as far as possible, mining in character. Colloquial instruction is unknown in English curricula, but could be introduced with advantage. Students here assure me that an hour of conversation is of tar more use to them than an hour of the best lecturing. In England a school-year of 6 or 7 months would be considered very short indeed; but Americans do not consider it so, for the reason that the rest of the year is mostly spent in acquiring practical acquaintance with their subjects in works or in the field, and the shorter courses, when coupled with this large amount of outside expe¬rience, produce an essentially practical-minded engineer, who is also more of a business man; whereas the English system, though excellent from a scholastic point of view, produces the theoretical rather than the practical man. British schools are waking up, however, and the practical aspect of the engineer's training is receiving greater consideration. Once launched upon his career, the American engineer is immediately called upon to exercise his self-reliance and ingenuity, if he is to retain the confidence of his employers; but what can we say of English directors? In how many cases is the engineer allowed to guide the destinies of his company?
