ENGINEERS have long pondered the answer to the question of "How am I doing?" and in large measure the answer from the economics angle is provided by the 1946 survey of the engineering profession now being published by the Engineers Joint Council as an eighty-page bulletin entitled "The Engineering Profession in Transition." The survey, based upon a completely precoded mail questionnaire, aimed at three major objectives: (1) to determine the general impact of World War II upon the profession in the period 1939 through 1946; (2) to obtain re- R liable data from which valid findings could be derived to predict how active the profession would be after 1946; and (3) to determine if the war's upheaval had changed materially the pattern of professional activities, education, background, and earnings from those which existed prior to 1939. Abundant data on the economic status of the engineer based upon years of experience in his particular field, the specific branch of the industry in which he served, and his educational background are presented. Although the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approximately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cenlentite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consideration of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:' C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown In Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850" C. for varying periods of time. The small samples were put into a large hot furnace, and the total time is recorded. The structure of the sample after 5 min. at 850" C. is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the nest of pearlite surrounding the graphite nodules is most satisfactory evidence of the character of the nodules. THE Anaconda Copper Mining Co. purchases 25,000 kw. of electric power for its mining operations at Butte Mont. This power is delivered, over duplicate feeders, in the form of 60-cycle, 2400-volt, three-phase current, to five compressor plants, where most of the energy is used for driving air compressors. At the compressor plants are located the switching apparatus for controlling the 2400-volt power and distributing it to the various mines. At these points, also, there are a number of motor-generator sets for converting the alternating current to 275-volt. direct current for the haulage systems. Pole lines convey the power from the compressor plants to outdoor transformer substations at most of the mines. When it is not economical to distribute the power at the lower voltages in the mines, transformers and motor-generator sets are placed at strategic points .underground. All power is purchased on a maximum-demand basis, therefore there is installed at one of the compressor plants an eight-element totalizing graphic wattmeter. This instrument records simultaneously the value of all power taken at the numerous points of delivery, which not only eliminates the diversity factor but permits load dispatching between compressor and pumping plants, and thus materially reduces the maximum demand from the power system. As most of the mine hoisting is done, by 90-lb. compressed-air winding engines, the air-compressor equipment for the winding engines and mining operations is quite extensive. The standard air compressor has a rating of 7500 cu. ft. per min. of free air, and most of the compressors are directly connected to synchronous motors. The synchronous motors are designed for 80 per cent. leading power factor, thus facilitating power-factor correction of total mine load. Consequently by cooperation with the power company, the voltage of the power received at the compressor plants is constant.

INCREASING realization that pouring and ingot-mold practices involve many factors of fundamental importance to ingot quality and general steel-mill operations has caused these phases of steelmaking to become major concerns of operators and metallurgists engaged in control of quality and costs. Methods of pouring steel from the ladle into the ingot molds have some direct effects on ingot quality. The mold itself governs solidification and dimensions of the ingot and in so doing exerts some very tangible influences not only on ingot quality but also on product yields and general steel-mill processing. In addition, practices are employed' in the handling of molds during daily open-hearth operations that are important to quality and production costs. Therefore, pouring and mold practices must be considered highly specialized and important steps in steel-mill operations. MOLD DESIGN Mold design is difficult to discuss in a precise manner because it varies greatly throughout the industry, both in theoretical concepts and practical application, and few well developed data are available. Most ingot molds are designed to meet conditions peculiar to a given plant wherein quality standards are dictated by end-use requirements, which may differ considerably, even for the same grade of steel. The mold designer must also consider the equipment available to process ingots and the product obtained from them. Such equipment, used for stripping, heating, blooming and finishing operations, is seldom, if ever, exactly the same in any two steel plants. Thus, pronounced contrasts in mold designs can be expected to continue, even among plants making strictly comparable types of product, particularly because some producers are just beginning to realize the benefits possible from specialized designs. The mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. .About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts and are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various typcs are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and cnable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to hare them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. At one of the auxiliary shafts, the dull drills are placed on a platform from which they are dumped into the body of the wagon that takes them to the shop.

IN the investigation of metallurgical transformations and the relationships between microstructure and properties of metals, it frequently is desirable to obtain a measurement of the relative amounts of the various phases present and of the mean size of particles into which each phase is dispersed. The relative amounts of the phases can be measured by the classical methods of area, lineal, and point analysis,1-5 in accordance with the principle that the volume fraction of a phase, the fraction of a polished cross section occupied by the phase, the fraction of a random line occupied by the phase, and the fraction of randomly arrayed points occupied by the phase are all equal. The validity of this relationship depends only on the attainment of a truly random sample of area, length, or points, and not on the size, shape, or distribution of the particles constituting the phase. Smith and Guttman8 have derived a relationship between the interface area per unit volume S, and the measurable quantities L., the interface length per unit area on a cross section, and NL, the number of interfaces per unit length intersected by a random line. Their equation, Sv = — L8 = 2NL is also valid regardless of the distribution of particle sizes and shapes. In contrast to the situation concerning measurement of relative fractions of phases and of interface area, the measurement of particle sizes in opaque samples has not been subjected to a complete analysis. It has been common to measure some lineal or area dimension of particles on a polished cross section and to use the mean value as a qualitative measure of particle size. In the present paper, quantitative relationships are established among the various mean dimensions on a polished cross section and the actual dimensions of the particles present. Particles of Uniform Size Spheres: If a metal sample contains particles of a phase a dispersed in the form of spheres of uniform size, a polished cross section through the sample will reveal circular areas of phase a with radii from 0 to ?, the radius of the spheres. Consider a cube of unit dimensions to be cut from the sample. If a cross section parallel to one of the cube faces is examined, the average number of particles per unit area (N,) equals the number of particles per unit volume (Nv) times the probability p1 that the plane would intersect a single sphere positioned at random within the unit cube. Since, of the various possible positions for the cross-sectional plane over the unit length from top to bottom of the cube, only those positions existing over the length 2r would lead to the plane intersecting the sphere, the probability of intersecting a single sphere is just 2r. Since possible positions of the line occupy unit area, and possible positions for which it will pass through the sphere occupy an area of pr2, the probability of the line hitting a randomly placed single sphere is pr2. If the plates are randomly oriented, as in a sufficiently large sample of a fine grained polycrystalline material, area and lineal analysis may be carried out with parallel cross-sectional planes and lineal traverses. If the plates are not randomly oriented, it is necessary to randomize the orientation of the cross-sectional planes and traverse directions. Let a unit cube be cut from the sample, and a cross-section plane be passed through the cube parallel to one of the cube faces. The number of plates cut by the cross-sectional plane per unit area is equal to the number of plates per unit volume times the probability of a plate intersecting a single randomly positioned and randomly oriented plate in the cube. If J is the component of the plate diameter in the direction normal to the cross-sectional planes, the probability of a plane cutting a single randomly oriented plate is equal to J, the mean value of J for all possible orientations of the plate. SEVEN years ago, Dr. S. L. Hoyt1 presented a masterful discussion of the hard metal carbides and cemented tungsten carbide. His lecture summarized most of the data then available in the field; many of the details relating to the production, properties and structure of cemented tungsten carbide had never been previously published, for, in fact, this information was only then being acquired. During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned. STEPS IN PREPARATION While the past 25 years have contributed a valuable store of working knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy, many of the process controls are derived entirely from experience and are not as yet finally explained by a specific physical or chemical phenomenon. For most of the cemented carbides such difficulties are aggravated by our lack of knowledge not only of the complex alloy systems involved, but also by the possible changes in structure and even in composition which may accompany variations in temperature, heating time, and furnace atmospheres. The principal steps in the preparation of these cemented carbide alloys are fairly well known, but to supply a foundation for discussion these steps are briefly outlined as follows: 1. On one occasion when it seemed desirable to reveal under the microscope not only the metallic structure of an alloy, but certain small non-metallic inclusions that are ordinarily obliterated by etching, it was discovered that, by partly eclipsing the illuminating pencil of light rays, the residual light was thrown on the object from one side and the structure was brought out in relief. At the same time, the non-metallic inclusions were retained in clear view. In this first demonstration of lighting obliquely through the objective a card was thrust part way into the light beam between the arc iris and the light filter; the shadow of the card on the filter served to locate its position. Next several stiff-paper disks of various diameters were mounted on flexible wires; some plasticine on the other end of the wires made it easy to adjust and maintain a disk at any desired position in the light beam. To facilitate manipulation, an assortment of disks was mounted on a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. The purpose of partly eclipsing the light beam was discussed in an earlier paper.' There it was pointed out that the usual methods of illuminating opaque objects for microscopic examination lend an unnatural appearance to the view, while the new method, which has been termed conical illumination, revels the true relationship of constituents by simulating natural lighting. In nature, all objects are lighted diffusely, or by light predominating from one direction, or by a combination of diffuse and directed light. Under these conditions, objects appear to have three dimensions—they possess relief. The kind of illumination known to metallographists as vertical or axial results in an unnatural appearance, as a large proportion of the illuminating rays are parallel to the line connecting the eye with the object, a condition almost never met in nature. Stacking fault energy measurements of nickel-base alloys have been mainly confined to binary and ternary systems. In this paper, the stacking fault energy has been measured by the rolling texture method in a series of ten alloys which comprise successive additions of Cr, Mo, Fe, and C to pure nickel, eventually resulting in an alloy of the composition of Hastelloy alloy X. The alloys studied here are single-phase, solid solutions with the exception of two alloys in which some undissolved particles of "primary" carbide have been retained. It is found that successive additions of chromium, molybdenum, and iron all lower the stacking fault energy, with iron having only a minor effect. The stacking fault energy is found to increase when carbon is added in solid solution. The results from the rolling texture measurements are correlated with thin foil observations of dislocation substructures in these alloys. In a recent paper' it was pointed out that the dislocation substructure of various superalloy matrices could be classified into three broad categories based on 'high', 'medium', and 'low' stacking fault energy. It has also been demonstrated2 that the dislocation substructure in each of these categories has a well defined role in the nucleation of strengthening precipitates which is different from the role played by the dislocation substructure in other categories. Thus, it becomes desirable to understand the influence of various solute elements on the stacking fault energy and hence on the dislocation substructure of the matrix, before any further development of superalloys by mi-crostructural predesign can be undertaken. Recently, Beeston and France have studied the influence of increasing solute additions on the stacking fault energy of a series of binary nickel-base alloys relevant to the Nimonic series using the rolling texture method, and have then estimated the effect of a given alloy addition in five commercial Nimonic alloys. However, comparison with stacking fault energy data from other investigations''5 suggests that the influence of a given solute element in a nickel-base binary system is not necessarily the same in a ternary or more complex superalloy system. Accordingly, the present work was undertaken to study the effect of successive addition of solute elements to pure nickel, the final composition being the nominal composition of Hastelloy X. The rolling texture method of stacking fault energy measurement was used since it can be used for the whole range of stacking fault energy values and does not have the disadvantage of, say, the Node method which is only applicable to low values of stacking fault energy. In addition, the rolling texture method provides a means of determining the stacking fault energy which is statistically more significant than that provided by other methods. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Button heats of alloys of the compositions shown in Table I were prepared. Each button was remelted not less than four times. After a slight deformation (approximately 5 pct) all alloys were homogenized at 2200°F except alloys, H . I, and J. Alloys H and I were solution heat treated at 2150°F and alloy J at 2282OF. The buttons were cold worked by rolling, using "end-to-end" passes and intermediate anneals at the homogenization temperatures mentioned above. After each annealing treatment the samples were rapidly water quenched to avoid any precipitation. In alloys F and I, however, a few particles of "primary" carbides were retained even after the homogenization treatments at the temperatures mentioned above. Part of the solution heat treated material was cold worked to 0.04-in.-thick sheet and the penultimate reduction was -50 pct of deformation as recommended by Dillamore et al. All annealing was carried out in vacuo within sealed quartz capsules. Some of the material from each alloy was rolled down further to 0.004 in. strip for thin foil transmission electron microscopy specimens. Specimens of this strip were annealed at the homogenization temperature for 1 hr and then strained 7 pct by rolling at room temperature. Thin foils were prepared from the strip specimens by the 'window" technique using an Ethanol-Perchloric acid electrolyte at 32°F and a voltage of 22 v. Stainless steel cathodes were employed. All transmission electron microscopy was performed in a JEM-7 electron microscope using an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. Specimens from the 0.04 in. sheet which had been rolled -60 pct in the final pass were electropolished to remove the surface layers to a depth of approximately 0.002 in. THE accompanying chart was devised to provide a rapid and simple method of correcting for temperature and compressibility (deviation from Boyle's law) of gas under relatively high pressures and temperatures, such as are encountered in many deep reservoirs. The chart was prepared by interpolating for the desired values in the experimental data of Burke and Keyes1 and Kvalnes and Gaddy2 on the compressibility of methane, after adjusting their results from 0°C. to 60°F. and combining the correction factors for compressibility and temperature into a single multiplier, which, applied to the product of pressure and reservoir volume, gives at once the volume at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs.) and 60°F. The relationship 0f this multiplier to the compressibility factor Z, as used in most discussions, is simply: [Multiplier = 460° + 60°ZT –] where Z is the compressibility factor and T the absolute temperature (Rankine). Fahrenheit temperatures are shown on the vertical axis and pressures in pounds per square inch absolute on the horizontal axis. Correction factors or multipliers at intervals of 0.05 from 0.55 to 1.40 have been plotted on the chart and are calculated t0 give volume of gas at one atmosphere pressure (14.7 lb.) and 60°F. The operation is as follows: The reservoir volume, times the number of atmospheres pressure, times the multiplier, gives the volume of gas measured at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in.) and 60°F. For example, a reservoir is estimated to have a volume of 10,000,000 cu. ft., bottom-hole pressure is 2940 lb. per sq. in. and temperature is 184°F To make the correction for methane, follow the 184° line horizontally to the 2940-lb. pressure line. The intersection lies between the 0.85 and 0.90 correction lines, and by interpolation we may estimate the multiplier at 0.863. In 1891-92 1 was entrusted with the geological survey of part of the large area lying between the Marquette and Menominee iron-ranges in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and extending from the Republic trough on the north, through portions of the valleys of the Michigamme and Fence rivers, to and including the intermediate Felch mountain range on the south. Until a few years back the larger part of this area has been very difficult of access, and much of it is difficult still. The rock-surface is for the most part covered with swamp, forest and glacial deposits of various kinds, and therefore has not invited geological study. For these reasons the district, as a whole, with the exception of the Felch mountain range, remained almost unknown from a geological standpoint until our work in 1892. Our main object was to map the pre-Cambrian rocks, particularly the iron-bearing formations of Algonkian or Huronian age, and to obtain as much information as possible with reference to their sequence and structure, In carrying out this purpose, the use of simple magnetic instruments was found to be of the greatest assistance, and indeed indispensable. In this paper the results of our experience in tracing magnetic rocks by means of the disturbances produced in these instruments, have been brought together in systematic form, with such references to the particular area as are necessary in order to illustrate general principles, with the hope that they will prove useful to other workers in the same region, or in other regions where similar conditions may be encountered. Earlier studies of the mechanism of flotation showed that coal flotation products are contaminated by composite coal and mineral particles. The mineral matter of these particles has the dual effect of increasing the specific gravity and decreasing the coal surface of the particle available for bubble attachment. The present study showed that these particles are more loosely held in the froth column than the high grade coal particles, especially in the coarser sizes. Consequently, it is possible in the laboratory to produce a secondary concentration of the product by sprinkling the froth product with water to wash these loosely held particles from the froth during formation and recovery. To improve coal flotation, Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s research department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies1 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the basis for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14 mesh x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level. These principles and findings, together with work by Professor V. I. Klassen,' led to the froth sprinkling investigation reported in this paper. Working with Russian coals, Klassen had shown that froth sprinkling washes loosely held refuse particles from the froth and compensates for the water lost in the upper froth layers and increases its stability. As a result, the coal particles are retained in the froth and the loss of coarse coal from the froth is prevented. Decreases in ash of 0.1% to 1.5% were reported by Klassen. Working with a 28 mesh x 0 American coal, the author of the present paper found that single-stage flotation coupled with froth sprinkling produced a product comparable to that obtained by the more expensive method of roughing and cleaning.3 The investigation reported in the present paper expanded study of the effect of froth sprinkling to include each of the standard size fractions of a bituminous coal. The main findings are as follows: (1) For those size fractions between 48 mesh and 150 mesh, froth sprinkling produces a marked reduction in both sulfur and ash. In the case of those sizes coarser than 48 mesh, while this reduction is not as significant, the additional benefit of shorter retention time is still a plus for froth sprinkling. Furthermore, when froth sprinkling is coupled with normal fast flotation, the product purity approaches that obtained by starvation reagent feeding, i.e., gradual feeding of flotation reagent to float the recoverable coal from the pulp slowly in several increments. LARGE part of the mining industry is still under the shadow of the depression, and unwilling to undertake changes in plant or methods of operation that require large preliminary expenditures of money. Certain metals command fair prices: nickel, tin, and molybdenum. The precious metals, gold and silver, have been given greater values by natural processes of economics or by proclamation, but are of so much less importance in industry, in total value, and number of men employed, that they have not greatly raised the average for the mining business. The increased value of gold which was established in 1933 has stimulated .the search for new deposits, and aided efforts to revive some of the old mines 'Where it is hoped to find quantities of marginal ore now become profitable. The higher price did not increase production very much for 1934, but two discoveries of major importance, and others yet to be proved, will help later. The two referred to are the Lupa gold field in Tanganyika Territory, and the Silver Queen mine on Soledad Mountain near Mojave in California. The first was recently discovered, and is being developed by the East African Goldfields, Ltd. Uncompleted explorations of the croppings early in the year had exposed for measurement and sampling to a shallow depth, three ore shoots as gregating 7400 ft. in length and 6 ft. in width, containing 0.375 oz. of gold per ton. SOME extension of flying service to the mining industry occurred in 1938, particularly in Canada, where freighting activity radiated from Edmonton into the new northern mining districts. Again the airplane demonstrated its usefulness in getting new equipment rapidly into the field and in decreasing shutdown time while waiting for repairs. An 18-ton Caterpillar tractor with shovel attachment was disassembled, brought in by plane, and placed in operation at Berens River, Ont., within seven days after its de- livery at Winnipeg. At Central Patricia a mill breakdown required the replacement of a full mill head and trunnion with ball bearings, weighing 2700 lb. The Canadian Airways Junkers, termed the "flying boxcar," was called in from Yellowknife, 1300 mi. away, and the new installation was completed three days later.

This investigation attempts to describe and simulate the alcohol displacement process by means of a cell model, as employed in chemical engineering practice. The proposed model is more simple than previously proposed models. and utilizes parameters chosen on a theoretical basis. The model successfully reproduced the formation of the stabilized bank and the breakthrough of alcohol, the latter depending on one of the model parameters, which may be correlated with the length of the porous medium. Moreover, the effects of the phase behavior of the liquid system involved, as observed in experimental studies, were reproduced. Several variations of the basic model were devised and tested on a digital computer. These included the cases in which: (1) the actual value of fractional flow was used in cell-to-cell computations; (2) the number of cells was varied within the same run; and (3) incomplete rather than complete phase equilibrium was assumed within each cell. The proposed cell model clarifies the basic mechanism of the process. Detailed concentration profiles obtained for each cell, for instance, showed the mechanism of bank formation in relation to the phase behavior characteristics. The results obtained indicated a varying degree of phase equilibrium concommitant with changes in the velocities of the phases in an actual alcohol displacement. This condition was approximated by changing the number of cells during the simulation. Interesting information was obtained on the influence of path length on the efficiency of alcohol displacement, which has been the subject of some controversy. Certain limitations preclude the use of the proposed model as a substitute for experimental studies. The results obtained were, nevertheless, of value in interpreting the experimental results. INTRODUCTION During recent years considerable effort has been directed toward an understanding of alcohol displacement, the process whereby oil and water are recovered from a porous medium by the continuous injection of a solvent. The complex nature of the physical process involved has so far defied a complete mathematical treatment. Other methods of approach, amounting to an overall material balance, have been proposed, yielding useful information on certain aspects of the process.1-3 Taber et al, in particular, defined the displacement mechanism in terms of the phase behavior of the alcohol-oil-brine system invoIved.2 Wachmann reported a mathematical treatment of alcohol displacement subject to certain simplifying assumptions? Donohue proposed the use of a "cell model" for simulating alcohol disPlacement.5 The nature of the assumptions involved limited the utility of the model. The present work attempts to examine the variables involved in the simulation of alcohol displacement and discusses several possible versions of the basic cell model. Under certain conditions the model results are similar to the experimental results. In particular, the spontaneous formation of of the stabilized bank and the effects of the system phase behavior were successfully reproduced. PREVIOUS WORK ON CELL MODELS Cell models and the theoretical plate concept are often used in solving chemical engineering problems in which an explicit mathematical solution may be difficult or impossible to obtain. Examples of such applications occur in distillation, gas-liquid chroma tography,6 reactor technology, absorption, etc. In petroleum engineering, such a model was used by Attra7 to describe non-equilibrium gas drive, and by Higgins and Leigh ton8 to calculate sweep efficiency in water flooding. Aris and Amundsen pointed out the equivalence between the diffusion model and perfectly mixed cells connected in series.9 Deans proposed a three-parameter cell model to simulate two-component

The morphology and crystallography of marten -site formed during quenclzing were examined by transmission electron microscopy in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pet Ni and Fe-33 wt pet Ni. Depending upon composition, four types of transformation products were observed in this portion of the Fe-Cr-Ni system. Three of these products are denoted as lath, plate, and surface martensite. The hcp structure found in association with martensite it? certain higlz-clzromium stairzless steels does not influence the transformation crystallogyaphy and cannot he Considered to act as a transitional structure in the transformation from austenite to martensite. DISTINCT changes in the characteristics of mar-tensitic transformations are produced by the partial replacement of nickel by chromium in austenitic iron alloys. Large, discrete martensite plates form in Fe-30 pct Ni, while aggregates of small crystals form in sheets parallel with (111)A austenite planes in stainless steels containing in the vicinity of 18 pct Cr and 8 pct Ni. These transformation structures are termed plate and lath martensite, respectively. In addition, an hcp structure (E) has been observed in certain high-chromium stainless steels in association with martensite. It has been suggested that the E structure acts as an intermediate step in the nucleation of martensitel-' and influences the morphology and crystallography of the final transformation product. However, this structure may be the consequence of the deformation of austenite arising from the shape distortion accompanying the transformation to bcc martensite.' An hcp stacking of atoms is produced in an fcc lattice by the introduction of an intrinsic stacking fault on alternate (111)A planes. At present, the arguments behind each explanation for the E structure are based on circumstantial evidence. This investigation seeks to determine the importance of the hcp structure to the martensitic transformation, and to examine the crystallography and morphology of the structures produced in bulk samples by quenching in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pct Ni and Fe-33 wt pct Ni. These aspects of the martensitic transformations occurring in these alloys have been studied by electron metallography and selected-area diffraction of foils examined in transmission in the electron microscope. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys have been prepared from thoroughly mixed powders of pure iron (99.6+ pct, 0.06 max pct C, 0.15 max pct N), chromium (99.9+ pct), and nickel (99.9+ pct). After sintering in an Ar-H2 atmosphere, the mixtures were melted by induction heating in recrystallized alumina boats under purified argon. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.4-mm sheets (100 pct reduction in thickness) after the removal of at least 1.5 mm from their surfaces by grinding. Three-millimeter discs were punched from the cold-rolled sheet and annealed at 1150°C for approximately 24 hr in evacuated quartz capsules. The average grain size was 40 µ Thin foils for examination in transmission in the electron microscope were prepared from discs quenched to liquid-nitrogen temperature. A depression was first jet-machined into the center of a disc and a thin area (less than approximately 3000A in thickness) was produced at the base of the depression by electropolishing. In electrochemical separation of metals, it is necessary to control the potential applied between the electrodes so that only the desired electrode reactions can occur. A knowledge of the minimum potential needed for a given electrode reaction to take place continuously is therefore pertinent to the success of the process. In molten chloride systems at high temperatures, activation polarization is believed to be small,1,2 so the minimum potential needed for the electrolytic decomposition of a molten metal chloride MC1n (n = valence of the metal ion) is therefore essentially the equilibrium electrode potential E of the metal-chlorine galvanic cell in the solution. If the decomposition products are pure M and chlorine at a pressure of p atm, E*Eo-rt/nf in [i] Since EO (the standard electrode potential of MCln) is a constant at a given temperature and R (the gas constant), and F (the Faraday's constant) are all constants, the variation of E with the electrolytic bath conditions is largely determined by the effect of the latter on the activity of the metal chloride amcln (standard state = pure MC1,). Measurement of E and study of how amCin varies with temperature and concentration, the nature of the solvent, and that of the coexisting solutes are therefore pertinent in the selection of optimum operating conditions for the electrochemical separation of metals. Because of its low melting point, high decomposition potentials of its components, and the low solubility of heavier metals in it, the LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt is a useful solvent and has been used in the electrodeposition of Mo,3Ce,4 and u5 metals. Senderoff and Brenner3 measured the potentials of Zn/Zn++, Fe/Fe++, Cu/Cu+, Mo/Mo+++, and Ag/Ag+ against an Ag/AgCl (pure) reference electrode at 600°C and a concentration of 4.1 mole pct of each chloride and came to the conclusion that complex ion formation occurred in some of the melts. Laitinen and LiUe gave an electromotive force series at 450°C for a number of {Metal/Metal ions (unit activity)) electrodes in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt, the {pt/pt++ (unit activity)) electrode being chosen as the reference. Walker and Danly7 studied the ther-modynamic properties of NiC12 in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations by measuring the electrode potential between a nickel electrode and a chlorine electrode in the melt. Since potential measurements made by using the chlorine reference electrode are of more direct significance both in the study of electrochemical separation and in the evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of the melt, it is therefore decided to measure the electrode potentials of cells of the type {M/MCin (mole fraction = N) in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt/Cl2 over a range of N values and temperature for a number of metal chlorides.
