This paper reports on a study of 43 compression load tests (five fully instrumented) and ten pullout tests of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles in sand. Eight design methods reported in the literature were used to predict the measured pile capacities. Ultimate load capacities of the ACIP load tests were determined using two different definitions of ultimate capacity and compared with predictions. Load transfer behavior was determined from a study of the fully instrumented pile tests and compared to predicted values. Recommendations are made regarding the design approach most appropriate for these foundations and the best procedure for estimating ultimate capacity from pile load tests.

The minerals Industry carries out over US$ 2 billion of R&D annually. The R&D is performed at three levels ? in house research facilities; on a one-on-one basis with a research provider; as syndicated (collaborative) research. The key to a successful R&D programme is project selection. It is suggested that at this time of ?bounty? for the minerals industry the research portfolio should contain some ?blue sky? but potentially long term significantly beneficial projects. This said, the projects should align the technical concepts with the business imperatives. AMIRA has found the ?Road Map? concept has assisted in defining areas for R&D. Examples of this methodology using a Copper Road Map developed by AMIRA for the copper producers operating in South America is presented. The benefits derived from syndicated research are also discussed.

This paper describes the research that has been conducted -in an effort to understand the nature and causes of sulphide fires -in the Sullivan Mine. Results of the investigation have led to several theories of the origin: of the fires, the nature of the chemistry and a method for assessing: the fire potential. Recommendations and the implications for the mining operation are also discussed.

Sodium sulfate is one of the larger tonnage industrial minerals. A little more than half of this tonnage — 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of natural product— is recovered from ore deposits. Most of the rest is produced as a byproduct from other manufacturing operations. Sodium sulfate is mined in a variety of ways. These include conventional room-and-pillar mining, strip mining, in situ leaching of thick ore beds, solar evaporation and cooling-crystallization of lake brine, and the pumping of brine from complex salt deposits. There is also a variety of commercial sodium sulfate ore sources. They include thenardite (the mineral form of sodium sulfate, or Na2SO4), mirabilite (glauber salt,Na2SO4•10H2O), glauberite (Na2SO4•CaSO4), astra-kanite (bloedite; Na2SO4•MgSO4•4H2O), burkeite(2Na2SO4•Na2CO3), sodium sulfate-containing caliche and various brines.

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

The Rosita Hills contain rich, vein- and breccia pipe-hosted precious metal deposits. Volcanic activity occurred in two cycles - an early, mainly andesitic cone-building phase that terminated in the formation of a caldera and breccia pipes and a later phase characterised by trachytic lavas and dykes, rhyolite domes and lamprophyre dykes. Alteration consists of weak propylitic and argillic and, locally, intense advanced argillic, K-feldspar sericitic and silicic types. Marked trace-element depletions (Rb, Sr, Zn, Mn) are associated with K-feldspar-sericitic alteration and with advanced argillic alterations, whereas enrichments (Pb, Ag) are associated with K-feldspar-sericitic alteration. Gold distribution is highly localised and is controlled by breccia pipes and a caldera ring fault; it is not related to district scale alteration. In general, the geochemical and alteration patterns are complex, but they are clearly influenced by linear structures, the caldera ring fault and breccia pipes. Pipe-hosted Au-Ag and vein-hosted Ag mineralisation are associated, respectively, with early andesitic and late, post-caldera rhyolitic activity. The pipe-hosted and, especially, the vein-hosted mineralisation show affinities with adularia-sericite-type epithermal deposits

South African underground hard rock mines are typically managed using measurements made daily, weekly or even monthly of key parameters such as face advance, readiness to blast, blast success, temperature or dust levels. Health, safety and productivity can all be greatly improved if a real-time measurement system can inform decision making. To enable this vision of widespread sensing, communication and decision support, CSIR has developed an open standard architecture for communication of sensor data, and a reference implementation using that standard. The standard, called AziSA, meaning ?to inform? in isiZulu, will allow any device that complies with it to join any network that supports it. The standard is designed for South African gold and platinum mines. To be practical in a typical Bushveld platinum mine, a real-time sensor system needs to be robust, reliable and cheap: ?Sensors are equipped with power sources that will last as long as the sensor is required. In effect, sensors need to be disposable: cheap enough not to warrant repair if they break. ?Communication in the stope is wireless, to avoid there liability problems associated with wire connections. For example, wires to sensors in the face area are unlikely to survive blasting. ?To get information out of the stope, the power line to the scraper winch is used as a communications link. Unlike a separate communications link, the power line will be repaired if damaged, because of its importance to production. ?Outside the stope, communications are transferred onto the mine communication infrastructure. To succeed as a management system, the next key element is the use of software decision support tools that will analyse masses of real-time data to extract key parameters and trends for decision makers. A range of sensors has been developed, including commercial sensors that have had wireless adapters added to make them AziSA compliant, and bespoke sensors that provide low cost sensing of typical mining parameters. An important parameter in any sensor network is the location of the sensor. This has to be easy and cheap to establish, so a tool has been developed to locate sensors in the confines of a stope, using ultrasonic and radio techniques. Once sensors are installed and located, they associate their location to all data that they produce. All the data from the system are captured at surface in a flexible database that can be queried by any application that requires data of any kind. It is simple to program alerts, and for actions to be associated with alerts. The use of wireless in stope also allows for communication from surface to the stope, or from stope to stope. The first implementation of an AziSA compliant system is being installed as part of the Mine Health and Safety Council funded rockfall elimination project. The design is discussed, and a future application for a platinum mine is considered.

Spin-fin pipe piles can develop large loads in tension, thus have evolved as a foundation product of great potential. Currently, over 500 spin-fin piles have been used successfully in dolphins, docks, buildings and bulkheads. Spin-fin piles are pipe piles with plates welded near the tip at a batter-in-screw fashion. Thus, as the pile is driven, the pile screws into position. Tests show this pile type to have highly unusual stress/strain relationships, wherein plunging failure is usually never reached either at normal or large deformations. Tension capacity can approach pile capacity in bearing; thus, large reserves are usually available for tension. Tests have been performed on 8-5/8-inch to 24-inch-diameter piles in silt, sand, and gravelly soil, to provide a broad spectrum of data.

During the past three and a half years considerable improvement in the techniques of solution extraction of salt has been made by the use of wells which are cross-connected by hydraulic fracture at the base of the salt. Fracture is initiated by the application of hydraulic pressure. Underreaming and perforating techniques are used to control initiation. The fracture is then extended by continuous pumping until a pressure communication is obtained. Pressure communication is followed by washing-through to obtain a low-pressure connection. Well construction using non-shrinking cements that will bond with the salt and with associated strata is essential to the process. The connecting procedure described permits solution to attack the salt deposit from its base upward, thereby permitting greater recovery, fewer well repairs, better saturation of brine, and overall economy of development and operation. The fracture method of cross-connection requires special pumping of the fluid and is limited by present experience to initial well spacings up to about 1200 feet. The method has been used in bedded salts and is applicable for wells in salt domes. Since spring of 1956, new developnents in salt extraction wells have followed procedures substantially different from those in prior use. Although multiple well systems, connected either by the natural consequence of the solution process or by undercutting under protective pads, have been used previously, the past three and a half years have brought about new designs and new operation procedures based on cross-connection of the wells using hydraulic fracture. To date these techniques have been applied largely in the bedded salt deposits of Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, West Virginia, and New York. To the writers' knowledge they have not been used in salt dome wells. The methods have not yet been in use for a sufficient period to permit any statistical comparison with the older methods. It is evident from experience to date that the methods result in higher recoveries, lower capital and operating costs, better saturation of produced brine, reduced well maintenance and repair, and in considerably fewer production units to insure

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

A pilot plant was installed and operated at the Xstrata Nickel Sudbury Smelter 10 demonstrate the CANSOLV SO2 Scrubbing System. A 350 m3/h slipstream (through a 10cm pipe) was drawn from two different industrial gas streams to test the performance and robustness of the scrubbing system. The system achieved high sulphur capture, typically above 99%, and proved tolerant 10 varying gas strength and dust content in the feed gas.

"In this paper I will summarized the Falconbridge Nickel Mines1) energy costs and consumption data by fuel, process, cost centre and estimate our future costs and consumption patterns 2) detail the distribution of electrical energy 3) distribution of other forms of energy 4) describe present and planned energy conservation schemes; and 5) discuss economic justification and responsibility.There is sufficient material in this presentation to warrant several technical papers, however we felt that an overview of all our data and endeavors on the subject, would be most beneficial to those companies formulating energy conservation plans. The data briefly referred to in this slide presentation can be found in the technical paper.Over a five year period, total energy costs will vary between $63 and $94 MM depending on the future rate of energy cost escalation. An unrealistic 32% reduction in energy consumption is required to hold our own in the years ahead whereas an attainable 10°;, reduction in energy consumption would save $9 MM over this five year period.Total energy consumption, tonnage of ore delivered to plants and their ration BTU’s per ton of ore, are graphed for the years 1973 through 1976 and forecasted for the 1980’s. In 1974 we along with other member companies of the Mining Association, determined our purchased energy per ton consumption rate and set, as our goal, a 20% reduction by 1980. The dotted lines calculated from the energy audit, based on 1976 data shows there is a potential for a 10% increase in energy per ton. This could result from a lower than forecasted mining rate and operation of the new roasting, electric furnace and acid recovery facilities installed for environmental considerations at designed capacity."

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. "There is a dire need of a technology which can break the mineral interfaces to enhance liberation with minimum energy consumption in mineral beneficiation processes. Understanding of mineral crystal system and interfaces is essential to develop such methodology. So, this study is carried out to find out the role of mineral crystallography in milling and liberation. Data related of mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number, Bond Work Index and beneficiation processes were collected from literature and detailed statistical analysis has been carried out to establish a correlation among these parameters. It was found that atomic weight and cell parameters shown statistically significant relationship with Vickers Hardness Number of minerals, which controls the milling characteristics of ores. Liberation characteristics of five different kinds of ores were analyzed considering the types of interfaces between valuable and gangue minerals. It was found that phase interfaces play vita role in liberation and coarser liberation can be achieved in the minerals of incoherent crystal systems like manganese and zinc ores. Study of this subject can help us to understand the effect of stress wave propagation in solids and its effect on crystal interfaces. It can also help us to design a technology of future to break the mineral interfaces.INTRODUCTIONCommunition is energy intensive mineral processing operation and consumes up to 2% of the total electric power generated in the world. Energy consumption due to comminution is increasing every year as there is growing needs to exploit lower grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods like gravity separation, floatation, leaching etc. Currently, comminution methods are selected based on the reduction ratio and energy consumption but effect of grinding methods on subsequent processing methods specially on liberation also need to be studied to optimize the entire beneficiation process. Most of the attempts made in past to minimize the energy consumption in milling to enhance the mineral liberation were focused on compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Kilpelm and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller et al, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang el al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). But the role of mineral crystallography on milling and liberation behavior of minerals not fully explored yet."

La deficiencia de un plan de minado a largo plazo en yacimientos mineros de cielo abierto, responde a fluctuaciones inaceptables de la ley del mineral como el minado prematuro de zonas de desmonte, plataformas insuficientes, distribución heterogénea del equipo, entre otros problemas causados por la ausencia de un plan. En este sentido, el plan de corto plazo (seis meses) no asegura el funcionamiento de una mina que oscila normalmente entre 15 o 20 años de vida. Por tal motivo, el presente trabajo señala los parámetros que influyen en el planeamiento de largo plazo en minas a cielo abierto como la de la mina Cuajone, puesto que estos son semejantes y se puede preveer la existencia de problemas de operaciones.

The deposition of calcium carbonate scale on surface and subsurface production equipment creates an operation problem in many oil fields. The formation water in which the carbonate-scale-forming components are initially dissolved becomes supersaturated with calcium carbonate as a result of the drop in pressure during production. The continuous flow of a supersaturated solution through the production equipment results in the growth of a dense layer of calcium-carbonate crystals. For a scale layer to be built up, the supersaturated formation water should contact the walls of the production equipment. The tendency for scale to be deposited, therefore, will be low, if the crude has a low water cut and if the water is finely dispersed in the oil. A scale problem will occur, if at a high water cut part of the water is present as free water. The rate of scale deposition will then be approximately proportional to the rate of free water production. Depending upon where the formation water becomes supersaturated, scale may be deposited in the flow line only, in both flow line and tubing, and in some cases even in the perforations and in the formation near the wellbore. In the South Sumatran fields (Indonesia) the main difficulties encountered due to the deposition of calcium-carbonate scale have been restriction of flow through tubings and flow lines, wear and abrasion of plungers and liners, and stuck plungers or wellhead valves. So far, the only methods of combating the *Presently associated with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd.. Seria. scale problem have been routine acidizing and additional well pulling. As for the pumping wells, it was estimated that some 50 percent of the total well-pulling effort was directly attributable to scale deposition. The most promising alternative was to prevent the deposition of calcium carbonate scale by means of chemicals. Inorganic polyphosphates such as sodium hexametaphosphate and trisodium polyphosphate are known to retard the formation of scale by the "threshold action". They are adsorbed on specific faces of the crystal nuclei and thus prevent crystal growth, thereby stabilizing supersaturation. Polyphosphates are effective at very low concentrations ( a few ppm), and far less than stoichiometric quantities are required to keep the scaling ions in solution. Recent investigations on barium sulfate scale1 have confirmed this mechanism. The types of polyphosphate mentioned can be applied as concentrated aqueous solutions either squeezed into the formation, lubricated down the annulus or injected via macaroni string. Several squeeze jobs with polyphosphate solutions have been carried out in the South Sumatran fields, however, with disappointing results. Lubrication down the annulus and injection through a macaroni string were not considered attractive in this area because of the kind of equipment and the degree of supervision these techniques require. Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

Australia is the world's leading producer and exporter of mineral sands. Despite increased production from some other countries in recent years, Australia maintained its No.1 position in 1988 among world producers of mineral sands concentrates. Production of the titanium minerals -- ruffle, ilmenite and leucoxene, as well as synthetic ruffle -- by the seven companies currently comprising the Australian industry increased in 1988 in response to continuing strong demand for feedstock by the pigment industry. Production of co-product zircon remained at the 1987 level, reflecting declining zircon grades. Exports of mineral sands concentrates increased in 1988; export earnings exceeded $300million. Prices for mineral sands concentrates are now at a historical high and, assuming that the world economy remains strong, real prices should continue to trend upwards in the short term. Exploration in the Eneabba-Cooljarloo region and the Scott River area, both in WA, the Murray Basin, Vic, and the central Queensland coast area, has identified substantial resources of heavy mineral sands. These discoveries have reversed the trend of the early 1980s of falling resources of mineral sands. In 1988, BMR estimated that economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite combined was about 72.8 million tonnes. However, a substantial portion of the resources on the east coast are frozen as a result of environmental considerations. The proportion of mineral sands concentrates processed in Australia increased with the commissioning of two new synthetic rutile plants; Australia is now the world's leading producer of synthetic rutile (total capacity 272000 tonnes), most of it for export. Australia's two TiO2 pigment producers have both increased capacity, lifting national capacity by some 70p ercent to over 120000 tonnes/yr. As part of the expansion one producer converted from the sulphate to the chloride process. Other new pigment plants are being proposed for the future.

Direct reduction of iron ore by solid reducing agents have been studied extensively and summarised by several authors (Otsuka and Kunii, 1969; Abraham and Ghosh, 1979; Frauhan, 1977; Rao, 1971; Kawasaki, Sanscainte and Walsh, 1962; Ghosh, 1970; Rao, 1979). While studying the reduction behaviour, it is generally agreed that the reduction occurs via gaseous intermediate, generated by carbon gasification reaction which involves mass transfer, heat transfer nucleation and growth, etc through a) reduction reaction occurring at solid reductant, and b) reduction reaction occurring at solid iron oxides, thus making the overall reduction process very complex in terms of clearly defining the reduction kinetics of the system. In addition to this, practical difficulties like correctness of reaction temperature, (Seaton, Foster and Velasco, 1983) difficulties in isothermal temperature studies of reduction, difficulties in monitoring the reduction process while using gaseous reductants and separation of reduction by volatile matter from overall reduction process make the reduction kinetics more complex (Misra).
