The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. CPAR, the Construction Productivity Advancement Research Program, is a new initiative of the Corps of Engineers to enhance U.S. construction industry productivity through the development and application of joint-funded research. CPAR seeks to balance the requirements of both the private sector and the Corps of Engineers construction program, to identify research needs that are common to both parties in a partnership for conducting research, and to achieve practical real-world products which will enhance productivity in the construction industry. Increasing costs of doing business has had a major negative impact on much of the nation's industrial base, and research and development (R&D) is among the areas hardest hit. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that since 1984 inflation adjusted R&D outlays in private U.S. firms have risen at an average annual rate of three percent, or about half the rate of gain of the preceding decade. And, despite a significant increase in foreign competition, the portion of gross national product (GNP) devoted to R&D is lower today than 20 years ago. For the case of the U.S. construction industry, the numbers are even more dramatic.

Paper presented at the MEP '89 conference held in Madrid, 13-15 November 1989. Britain has sustained an important metalliferous mining industry over many centuries. Recently, new geological concepts and exploration techniques have indicated that there is considerable potential for the discovery of a variety of deposit styles, often in previously neglected areas. The recent discoveries at Aberfeldy (Ba-Zn-Pb), Gairloch (Cu-Zn) and Cononish (Au-Ag)in Scotland and Curraghinalt (Au-Ag) and Lack (Au-Ag-Pb) in Northern Ireland are illustrations of this potential. Some of the prospective areas for future exploration are described and an indication is given of the legislative framework within which mineral exploration and development are carried out

The Meadowbank mine is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Kivalliq District of Nunavut in northern Canada. The process plant operates presently at a throughput of 11,500 tpd with gold grade varying between 2.9 and 3.6 g/t. The ore supplied to the process plant come from two different open pits and it expected to come from a new open pit early 2014. The ore is mid-hard materials so the feed size ore have a bigger impact on the throughput. The average gold recovery is 94.0% with about 15-30% of gold recover from the gravity circuit. The Meadowbank mine commissioning started in February 2010 utilizing a flowsheet consisting of one stage of crushing followed by primary and secondary grinding. The commercial production began in March 2010. During the commissioning several difficulties were observed to reach the designed throughput of 8,500 tpd. It was evaluated to insert a second stage of crushing. The insertion of the secondary crushing have two objectives, first to reach easily the process plant design throughput as well as to evaluated the mill capacity increasing. The process plant team evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a secondary crusher, increased the SAG and Ball mills motors capacities and maintain the rest of the process unchanged. Early 2011, with the improvement in the gold markets, decision was made to install the secondary crusher between the primary crusher and the primary grinding. The process plant continued to operate on the initial design until early June 2011. This paper presents the SAG mill throughput increasing from the designed tonnage of 8,500 tpd to 2012 targeted tonnage of 11,500 tpd, secondary crusher commissioning and the difficulties to operate in Canada Artic (Nunavut).

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson, Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001,000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,411,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

Wireless sensor networks and wireless communication systems have become indispensable in underground mines. Wireless sensor networks are being used for better real-time data acquisition from ground monitoring devices, gas sensors, and mining equipment, whereas wireless communication systems are needed for locating and communicating with workers. Conventional methods like wireline communication have proved to be ineffective in the event of mine hazards such as roof falls, fires etc. Before implementation of any wireless system, the variable path loss indices for different workplaces should be determined. This helps in better signal reception and sensor node localization, and also improves the method by which miners carrying the wireless devices are tracked. This paper proposes a novel method for determining the parameters of a suitable radio propagation model, which is illustrated with the results of a practical experiment carried out in an underground coal mine in southern India. The path loss indices, along with other essential parameters for accurate localization, have been determined using the XBee modules and ZigBee protocol at 2.4 GHz frequency.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mining) degree As a partial fulfilment for the degree of B.Sc. (Eng) (mining) at the University of the Witwatersrand, a dissertation was to be completed in the mining industry. This was done at Finsch mine, with the purpose of determining the best solution to the required secondary breaking problem. In order to complete the study of the secondary blasting method available for use in the new block 4, cave mining method at Finsch mine the following problem statement was identified and solved ?The methods currently in use, for the secondary breaking of oversize rocks at their source in the current production levels, are to be investigated, and their applicability to the new block 4mining project determined?. To effectively achieve this problem statement above; time was spent researching and investigating, in depth, the methods that are currently in use at both Finsch and Koffiefontein mines; so as to gain practical knowledge of these. The methods were identified and independently evaluated, taking into consideration factors such as costs of the equipment, time to break oversize rocks, advantages, disadvantages, safety and labour requirements, etc. This in turn then allowed for a direct comparison between the methods and the decision as to the best to apply to the new block 4 production level. The methods that were investigated included: ?Concussion blasting, where concussion bombs and lay-on charges are used to break hang-ups and boulders. ?Drill and blast methods, where holes are drilled in large rocks and charged manually with explosives. ?Emulsion secondary blasting, which is a new project in use at Koffiefontein mine from African Explosives Limited. ?The Ro-BustTM breaking system, a hydro-fracturing breaking system. Once all the methods had been evaluated and compared it was found that the Ro-BustTM Breaking system was the most applicable for the breaking of boulders, with, the Emulsion Blasting System being used for hang-ups. Heavy structures in central Cleveland, Ohio, are supported on raft foundations, driven piles, or caissons. Settlements can be predicted and structures are designed to accommodate such settlements. On one project the settlements were not provided for in the design of the structure. Soils are sands, silts, and varved clays to shale. A rift in a central area is 600 feet deep. Solutions to problems, and results, are detailed.

Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.

The Delaware River Tramway will link civic and retail developments in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey. Twin 300-foot towers will anchor the cables at either side of the river. Four high capacity drilled shafts designed by the Geotechnical Department of DMJM+HARRIS support each of the towers. At the Philadelphia tower, each 6-foot diameter shaft extends 130 feet deep and terminates with a 30-foot rock socket. The shafts are situated within the footprint of an existing relieving platform, which complicates the typical construction sequence. Also, the subsurface conditions at the site provide a unique challenge in both the design and construction of the drilled shafts. During the construction of the four-drilled shafts for the Philadelphia tower, a 6000-ton Osterberg load test was performed on the first shaft to verify design assumption and confirm the shaft capacity. The results of the test were utilized to establish load transfer characteristics and develop foundation design parameters suitable for the site conditions. By doing so the Design Engineer was able to reduce the length of the rock sockets on the remaining production shafts by approximately 5 feet per shaft. As a result, the test provided a significant cost saving to the Owner by eliminating 15 feet of rock drilling from the construction costs. This paper presents a description of the unique design and construction methods adopted for the foundations, also on the Osterberg load test including equipment used, number and locations of strain gages, and interpretation of results. The results and findings presented in this paper could benefit both the design and construction industries because it provides a comparison between geotechnical design assumption and actual field measurements; which has always been a challenge particularly for rock formation.

The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

A number of people have expressed concern, understandably, that if mining operations take place in the Coromandel, the flows of mineralised ground water which exist will be intercepted. This water in many cases contains toxic metals including mercury, arsenic and lead and it is thought that if this water is allowed to enter streams or the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it could endanger natural marine life and possibly established fisheries. This paper seeks to explain in simple terms the geology and the process of deposition of the various mineral deposits in the ground, the chemistry of the reactions between these minerals and the rain water falling on the ground, the hydrology and behaviour of this mineralised groundwater as it moves through the ground until it eventually enters the sea.

Evidence is presented which confirms previous findings that models of solution strengthening depending solely on lattice parameter changes are incomplete. Direct evidence for the Suzuki interaction of chemical effects was obtained from alloys with constant lattice parameter, for which solution strengthening was nearly independent of temperature from 300° to 20°K. SOLUTION hardening principles have been reviewed recently by Parker and Hazlett.' In addition, the interactions of dislocations and solute atoms were reviewed by Cottrell.' It is not proposed to review this information again here, but to refer only to those details which are pertinent to the developments which have occurred since these papers were published. Literature Survey To set the stage, it has been known for some time that solid solutions are stronger than the pure parent metals, and that the strength increases with increasing amounts of alloying element. One of the most extensive earlier investigations was that of Lacy and Gensamer,3 who reported that the solid solution strengthening of iron is a power function of the composition, that the relative strengthening is a function of the solubility limit, and that the rate of strain hardening is a function of the amount of solution hardening. Thus, the slope of the plastic portion of the stress-strain curve increases with increasing yield strength. An approach to the development of principles resulted from work by Gulyeav,4 who reported that the strengthening effect of solid solution alloys is periodic in character when plotted as a function of the atomic number of the solute. A more quantitative approach was to relate the amount of solution hardening to the lattice parameter of a solid solution. This was done quite early by Norbury,5 and later by Brick, Martin, and Angier,6 Frye and Hume-Rothery,7 and French and Hibbard. This relationship is only approximate in character. The next development was to relate the amount of solution hardening to lattice stress, as proposed by Frye and co-workers.9 They calculated what they called ionic overlap from the lattice parameter changes represented as a change in volume, using Bridgman's hydrostatic compression equation. The resulting correlation was somewhat improved as compared to the simple correlation with lattice parameter. The next step was carried out by Dorn, Pietrow-sky, and Tietz,10 who suggested an effect of valence differences in addition to the effect of lattice parameter. Their proposed parameter shows flow stress as a single valued function of the concentration and a relationship involving these two atomic variables. In addition, they contributed new data on the temperature dependence of solution hardening which indicated that it was a strong function of temperature for aluminum alloys. Allen, Schofield, and Tate11 carried the valency effect even further by reporting data indicating that with a given solvent element the stress-strain curve is a function of electron density, entirely neglecting the size factor, which varied by a factor of two. This evidence led to a quantum mechanical calculation by Cottrell, Hunter, and Nabarro,12 based on the formation of a dipole around an edge disloca-

Granulation systems are customarily viewed as problem areas in metallurgical operations. The inherent risk of explosion when combining a high temperature melt with water creates a safety hazard. Separation of the granulated material from the quenching medium generally involves equipment that can have significant maintenance and operating costs. Granulation systems' reliability and availability can negatively affect the plant production. Against this background, granulation systems have been treated by design firms and producers as an add-on and a necessary evil. The technology is becoming better understood and solutions to common problems are being found. This paper will discuss typical problems in common systems, and some of the improvements that have been made, with particular reference to non-ferrous applications.

"Over the last decades, many authors have shown the importance of froth in the flotation process. Mineral recovery is related to froth recovery and flotation. Selectivity is affected by froth characteristics, especially structure and loading. The characteristics of froth textures could therefore be used for diagnosing flotation.Machine imaging, especially image texture analysis, allows on-line measurement of important froth characteristics and process state classification. The measured characteristics include froth texture, loading and stability indicators. To extract information from images, texture analysis tools are used as well as a block-matching algorithm (BMA). For process state classification, images are analyzed with the same tools and clustering is done with multivariate data analysis algorithms.Two case studies, Brunswick Mine Concentrator Cu/Pb circuit and LaRonde Mine Zn circuit, are presented to show that these indicators may be used for diagnosis and control. The influence of manipulated variables on measured froth features is shown as well as the relationship between froth characteristics, mineral recovery and flotation selectivity.INTRODUCTIONImaging is a way to depict abstract characteristics of a scene or an object; it is often related to other types of scientific observations, chemical component concentrations, for example (Geladi and Grahn, 1996). In this paper, the scene is flotation froth. WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A better location for a cement works could not well have been chosen. On the east side of the island there is a deep channel, which never shows less than 18 ft. of water alongside the company's...

RECENTLY, Ansell and aenel' proposed a dislocation model to account for the yielding behavior of dispersion-strengthened alloys. The criterion for yielding used in this model was that yielding occurs when the shear stress due to arrays of piled-up dislocations fractures or plastically deforms the dispersed second-phase particles. Calculations based on this model predict that the yield strength, uysof a dispersion-strengthened alloy containing particles whose geometry permits them to be considered as straight, i.e. not curved, barriers to dislocations follows the relation where and are the shear moduli of the matrix and dispersed phase respectively, b is the Burger vector of a dislocation in the matrix, A is the mean free path between dispersed phase particles and C is a constant. This yield stress, ys, is closely approximated in polycrystalline alloys by the proportional limit. The offset yield stress, uoy, is the yield stress, uys, plus the increase of stress due to strain hardening in the offset strain increment. Previous investigation1 has shown that Eq. [I] describes the yielding behavior of several different dispersion-strengthened alloys as a function of the mean free path between dispersed phase particles at a constant temperature. The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the temperature dependence of the yielding behavior of dispersion-strengthened alloys. The alloys studied, MD2100 and MD5100, are SAP-type alloys containing flake shaped aluminum oxide particles dispersed in a matrix of commercial purity aluminum. The proportional limit and 0.2 pct offset stress of both of these alloys were determined as a function of temperature over the temperature range from -190" to 500 C. All tests were conducted on an Instron tensile testing machine. Stress was measured by means of the Instron load cell. Strain was measured by means of SR-4 strain gages attached to the tensile specimens. Stress sensitivity was 80 psi. Strain sensitivity was 2 x 10F Fig. 1 shows the values received for the proportional limit and 0.2 pct offset yield stress plotted as a function of homologous temperature for both the MD2100 and MD5100 alloys. Inspection of Eq. [I] shows that of the terms which determine the theoretically predicted yield stress, uy,, only the shear moduli have an appreciable temperature dependence. From Eq. [I] the yield stress at any temperature T, UT, may be predicted from the yield stress at any arbitrary reference temperature, in this case 25 OC, u25, by the relation where the subscripts T and 25 refer to the values of the property at test temperature and at 25"C, respectively. Compósitos magneto-elétricos (ME) combinam fases magnetostrictivas e piezoelétricas e podem ser utilizados na geração de energia a partir de vibrações e campos magnéticos presentes no ambiente, sendo também aplicáveis em sensores de campo magnético e em redes de sensores sem fio. Neste trabalho, um compósito ME foi processado pelo método cerâmico com 15 vol% CoFe2O4 (ferrita de cobalto) como fase magnetostrictiva e 85 vol% BaTiO3 como fase piezoelétrica. É mostrada a relação entre os parâmetros de processamento/sinterização e a microestrutura do compósito ME, com três tipos diferentes de arranjo das fases: particulado (obtido por dois diferentes métodos) e em camadas. Foram compactadas pastilhas dos compósitos para sinterização nas temperaturas de 1.200ºC, 1.300ºC e 1.400ºC por 4h, sendo que ocorreu a fusão da pastilha sinterizada a 1.400ºC. As amostras sinterizadas foram observadas em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), onde foram analisadas as características de porosidade, tamanho de grão e a distribuição das fases na microestrutura. Foram realizadas também análises cristalográficas por difração de raios-X (DRX), de espectroscopia RAMAN e de espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS). Foram relacionados os parâmetros de processamento utilizados com os resultados obtidos.

Charleston, SC is anything but boring. The city was founded in 1670 and has played a significant role throughout the history of the United States. Located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the southeastern United States, Charleston was a vital city in America?s early existence. Charleston?s coastal location has helped the city become the fourth largest cargo port in the United States and earn the 2011 designation as the number one travel destination in the United States by the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Part of Charleston?s charm and beauty can be attributed to its historic structures and churches that line nearly every sidewalk, roadways that were laid out based on the width of horse carriages, great weather, southern hospitality and coastal living. Now imagine the challenges of installing new, or re-placing aging infrastructure, in this setting. Every shovel full of dirt, every stick of pipe and every roadway sub-surface has its own historic story to tell. For engineering minded individuals, Charleston?s infrastructure has almost as fascinating a history as its more visible surface structures. Charleston was among one of the first American cities to construct separate sanitary and storm water drainage infrastructure. This concept has roots dating back to the city?s founding and is a credit to the foresight of its founding fathers who understood the basic health differences between sanitary and storm water.
