The cost effective and environmentally friendly recycling technology was developed and tested. It enables utilization of the fine nickel-base superalloy scrap in a form of heavily oxidized scarfing granulates. The process of granulates generation was discussed in details. Their properties were investigated. The results of literature search showed anticipated sufficient improvement of the properties of cast iron by its alloying with the elements from the scarfing granulates. The novel alloying approach is based on the two stage reduction operation. Firstly thegranulates were partially reduced in a solid state by their exposure with powdery carbon at the range of 1550 ? 1700°C. Then the gotten product was efficiently introduced into liquid iron since it has a form of fine natural agglomerates for arranging the optimal conditions for reduction of the granulates. The thermodynamic evaluation demonstrates higher reduction efficiency of carbon and silicon dissolved in iron than of the same elements in a form of the separate phases. The considered process partially provides itself by energy since the reaction of reduction of the chromium oxide by silicon dissolved in liquid iron has exothermal character. The mostly complete extraction of Ni was received. The sufficient reclamation of Cr was gotten at the same time.

As for treatment of zinc-containing wastewater, traditional SRB (Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) process was used, however, there exist two defects, like toxicity of heavy metal ions and high effluent COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) value. In this study, a new technique, called ISIS process (Immobilized SRB sludge beads with Inner cohesive carbon Source), in which SRB sludge is embedded in carrier of PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) with carbon source that adsorbed on certain material, is put forward for the first time to overcome the two defects existing in traditional SRB process. Furthermore, it has been shown that compared to traditional SRB process, ISIS process increases average zinc removal rate up 30%, average sulfate reduction rate up20%, and decrease average effluent COD value to meet discharge standards. If activated carbon is selected for carbon source adsorption and fixing material, and PVA for immobilization material, the zinc removal rate can reach above 98% under the conditions of 35 and pH 6. Meanwhile, the mechanism of zinc removal has been determinated according to the results from SEM (Scanning Electronic Microscope) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction).

"Dowa's scorodite, synthesized by oxidation of Fe(II) ions in the presence of As(V) ions at atmospheric pressure, was characterized. The scorodite was well crystallized and had a very low solubility. To examine the conditions for stable storage of the scorodite for long periods, experiments with various synthesis and leaching conditions were done. The scorodite had a very low arsenic solubility in sea water. It was estimated in consecutive leaching tests that the arsenic concentration would eventually converge to zero. The prevention of arsenic leaching by adding goethite or ferrihydrite was limited in some cases. Very low toxicity was confirmed by toxicity tests. The investigation results suggest that disposal at a specifically designed well-controlled storage place is preferable for the scorodite whose toxicity had been made sufficiently low. Disposal to an isolated final disposal site with more stringent prevention for the outflow of toxic substances was thought another option.IntroductionArsenic is a considerable environmental concern. A system of technologies for the effective immobilization, storage and final disposal has been sought. Dowa Metals & Mining Co. Ltd. has developed a unique scorodite synthesis method (DMSP®) which works at ambient pressure [1]. The scorodite is precipitated by oxidizing Fe(II) ions in a high-concentration As(V) solution. The scorodite produced in this way does not readily release arsenic because of its high crystallinity. Final disposal is necessary because scorodite currently has no commercial value. A standard method for the final disposal of scorodite has not been established because its long-term stability under various conditions has not been fully examined."

"Two advanced control solidification technologies were studied in this article to improve the quality of the cast ingots as well as to control the solidification structure evolution during the plasma arc melting (PAM) processing of Ti-6-4 ingots: (i) electromagnetic stirring (EMS), and (ii) ultrasonic treatment (UST). The developed EMS modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, fluid flow, and heat transfer equations, and mesoscopic modeling of the grain structure. The UST analysis tool is capable to model acoustic streaming and cavitation. It is used in this work to study ingot solidification under the presence of ultrasound. Predictions of the macrostructure, GET formation and primary dendrite arm spacing for PAM Ti-6-4 ingots processed with and without EMS or UST were discussed.1. IntroductionTitanium (Ti) alloys are melted, refined and cast into ingots through plasma arc cold hearth melting (PAM), electron beam cold hearth melting (EBM) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for jet engine applications. Process modeling has become a viable tool to optimize the PAM, EBM, and VAR processes. A comprehensive modeling approach to simulate ingot solidification phenomena in primary melting and secondary remelting processes of Ti alloys would include models for macroscopic mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid flow, acoustic, electromagnetic and species transport. The approach should also include microscopic models to predict the evolution of grain structure in solidifying ingots in conjunction with electromagnetic stirring (EMS) and ultrasonic stirring (UST)."

"Silver is traditionally recovered in base metal smelters (lead and copper), or as a by-product of other precious metals (gold and/or PGM's). This paper presents the results of non-conventional techniques to recover silver from complex materials. The PLATSOL® process has been developed to recover, in one step and without the use of cyanide, base metals (copper, cobalt, nickel) and precious metals (gold, PGM's) from sulphide concentrates too low in grade to enter the mainstream extraction processes. Silver is only partially recovered in solution with gold and the PGM's during the PLATSOL® process. However, the silver minerals are transformed into silver chloride, which can then be recovered from the PLATSOL® residue using conventional techniques. Some South American silver concentrates contain levels of impurity (mostly arsenic) so elevated that the penalties incurred significantly affect the process economics. The present results have shown that a low temperature calcination process transforms the concentrate into a product well suited for traditional recovery treatments. Metallurgical details will be provided, as well as the results of mineralogical studies that helped clarify the process mechanisms.IntroductionSilver occurrences in nature are very diversified, and, therefore, primary silver is produced as a by-product of many base metal and precious metal operations [1], as well as a co-product of most gold ores. However, difficulties can arise when high temperature processes are used for refractory gold ores or copper concentrates, or when the silver concentrate contains impurity elements such as arsenic that trigger high penalties."

"Chloride metallurgy is emerging as an alternative process for the production of base metals. Process Research ORTECH Inc. (PRO) has been at the forefront of technological development of chloride metallurgy. PRO has developed an innovative technology for the production of high purity titanium dioxide, iron oxide and vanadium pentoxide from ilmenite ores and concentrates. PRO is also developing its proprietary mixed chloride technology for the extraction of vanadium from other sources such as oil shales. In this paper, results from the test work conducted at PRO for the extraction of Ti and V using a mixed chloride lixiviant are presented.IntroductionTitanium and vanadium alloys and compounds have numerous industrial applications. Titanium dioxide is used in paints, plastics, rubber, paper, inks, textiles and a number of other miscellaneous applications. Currently nanosize T1O2 is being investigated for application in the cosmetics industry. Inorganic sunscreens mainly use T1O2 or ZnO particles, which reflect and scatter ultra-violet light. T1O2 nanomaterial is also finding application in smart construction materials and coatings, as a photo-catalytic converter. Nano TiO2 can catalyze the dissociation of NOX gases and other automotive emissions, thereby reducing the smog in urban centers. After the construction material is exposed to sunlight or ultra-violet light, the T1O2 is photo-activated and degrades the pollutants.Titanium metal and titanium dioxide are produced from ilmenite (FeTiOs) or rutile (naturally occurring T1O2) ore. Only about 6% of the titanium resources are used to produce titanium metal and the rest is used to produce T1O2. Many of the titanium ore deposits currently have unacceptable levels of transition metals which limits their processing by conventional routes."

"During the horizontal spin casting of rolls, vibrations and mould deformations seems to have a significant effect on the final quality of the product. Sources for vibrations can be found in the poor roundness and a static imbalance of the chill itself. The bending of the mould axis is also considered. Both, vibrations and axis bending, are used as an input for CFD simulations of the flow dynamics of the liquid metal inside the rotating cylinder. The aim is to study the feedback of the free surface behavior in terms of wave propagation and various wave shapes. Introduction The horizontal spin casting process (HSC) is a casting process that has several advantages over the traditional gravity casting processes. Centrifugally cast products have a high degree of metallurgical purity and homogeneous microstructure. A significant gain is observed for the rupture strength, the rupture strain, and the Young modulus. These properties naturally depend on the centrifugal force and thus, the best mechanical properties can be found at the largest distance from axis of rotation. However proper selection of the angular frequency has to be done in order to prevent the so-called ""metal rain"" i.e. metal droplets can fall down from the upper part of the cylinder due to a too weak centrifugal acceleration. In the same time excessive speeds can lead to the appearance of longitudinal cracks caused by the hoop stress in the initially solidified layer. From empirical knowledge other parameters have important influence on the casting products, it includes the pouring temperature, the pouring rate, the mould coating etc. Recently the presence of natural or forced vibrations have been identified as possible additional factors to be taken into account [1-2]."

The velocity solid charge attains when dropping down concentrate chutes is an important boundary condition when developing mathematical models of flash furnace burners and reaction shafts. In this work an experimental rig was developed to measure the velocity attained when nickel concentrate and sand were dropped down a vertical pipe 3m long. The velocity measurements showed that the nickel concentrate did not fall as individual particles. The measured values of the velocity approached, but did not attain, those calculated for solid bodies, the disparity being attributed to friction at the pipe wall and fluid drag losses. After falling 2 m velocities between 5-6 m/s were attained. The analysis was extended and applied to understanding the intermittent problem of puffing which sometimes occurs from the top of the concentrate chute. The pressure at the bottom of the chute is the net result of two opposing pressures, namely that developed by (a)the process air entering through the velocity control device, and (b) the solids falling down the concentrate chute. Flow back up the chute occurs when the former exceeds the latter. The process air pressures in the burner were obtained from CFD simulations of a full burner. Variables considered included air speed through the velocity control device, drop height and furnace draft. The analysis was useful in highlighting the operating conditions which were conducive to puffing and in establishing procedures to minimise its occurrence.

"This paper describes the development and validation of a comprehensive multiscale modeling approach capable of predicting at the mesoscopic scale level the ingot solidification structure and solidification-related defects commonly occurring during the vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process. The approach consists of a coupling between a fully transient macroscopic code and a mesoscopic solidification structure code. The predictions from the multiscale model, including grain morphology and size, primary and secondary dendrite arm spacings, Laves and NbC phases, tendency for freckling and columnar-to-equiaxed transition, were validated against experimental measurements for a 20-inch diameter VAR alloy 718 ingots. The validated model was then used to investigate the effects of melting rate and ingot diameter on the solidification structure of VAR processed 718 ingots.IntroductionThe objective of this work was to develop a fully transient multiscale modeling approach to get an insight into the effect of processing parameters on the cast micro- and macro-structure during VAR processing. The developed model assists in achieving better control of the ingot solidification structure and to determine trends in the macrosegregation in these ingots. Another objective of this work was to analyze the transient effects of production rate and ingot size on the resultant ingot microstructures. This objective was met by first understanding the effects of the full range of processing parameters typically used in the VAR process. Processing parameters such as power input and heat extraction rate significantly influence the ingot liquid pool size and shape as well as the ingot structure, which in turn will greatly impacts the final ingot quality."

"A new anaerobic reactor variation, the UASB/CO2-stripper reactor was conceived. It consisted of a conventional UASB reactor that recirculated the biogas produced. The sludge characteristics of this system were examined when treating high strength wastewater. From the data collected, it was obvious that the UASB/CO2-stripper system can satisfactorily operate at higher loading rates (25 g COD·L-1·d-1). A pronounced effect on the quality of the granular sludge was observed. The VSS/TSS ratio decreased sharply. A considerable decrease in the mean granule diameter was observed, while the specific gravity of the granules increased. The sludge bed porosity increased significantly leading to a considerable expansion of the sludge bed. These changes in the sludge properties led to a gradual shift of the system towards a fluidized bed process as far as its hydraulic characteristics were concerned.IntroductionIn recent years energy considerations and environmental concerns have increased the interest in direct anaerobic treatment of industrial wastes. The anaerobic method of waste treatment offers, under the present circumstances, a number of significant advantages with trivial or more serious drawbacks over other treatment methods. The major obstacle to the application of the process for this specific purpose is perhaps the difficulty of extending it to a stable and simple operational form. A number of reactor configurations has been developed leading to high biomass concentrations, e.g. the contact process, the filter reactor, the UASB reactor, and the fluidized bed systems, but the process stability problem still remains [1].A prime objective in the operation of anaerobic waste treatment process is the maintenance of a proper pH range. Thus, a possible solution to the process stability problem could be obtained by increasing alkalinity in the anaerobic systems. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to present and evaluate the results of a system (UASB/ CO2-stripper) with increased alkalinity concentrations."

"This work presents the preparation and characterization of a nanocomposite based on Poly(butylene terephthalate) PBT and Brazilian smectitic clay (bentonite chocolate clay). Before being incorporated as clay nanoparticles in PBT resin, the clay was organically modified by the addition of a quaternary salt and sodium carbonate. PBT/Clay nanocomposite (96.3:3.70 wt %) was obtained by using a twin-screw extruder machine. After extrusion process, the nanocomposite was characterized by tensile, flexural and impact tests, SEM, Vicat, HDT, DSC, TGA and XRD tests. The results showed that the properties of the nanocomposite obtained were superior to those of neat PBT. Concerning the temperature of thermal distortion (HDT) an expressive gain of around 45 % was presented to PBT/Clay nanocomposite compared to PBT evidencing the interaction of nanofiller with the polymeric matrix.IntroductionPolymer-clay nanocomposites, also called as polymer layered silicates nanocomposites have attracted much attention from both industry and academia over the past decade because they frequently exhibit unexpected properties. In contrast to the traditional fillers, nanofillers, in particular, nanoclay, is found to be effective. The addition of a small amount (< 5 wt.%) can show significant improvement in mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, flammability resistance, and electrical/electronic properties of the final polymer nanocomposite without requiring special processing techniques. Also, as with other nano-size particles, the overall crystallization rate and the glass transition temperature are also affected. It is generally believed that the improvement of properties of nanoclay composites is directly related to the complete exfoliation of silicate layers in the polymer matrix. However, a processing technique that produces complete exfoliation is still a technical challenge [1,2]."

"Tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS), a precursor of silica nanoparticles, is prepared from the waste silicon sludge, followed by the synthesis of silica nanoparticles from the TMOS by flame spray pyrolysis. A two-dimensional multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for the flame spray pyrolysis process (FSP) for the synthesis of silica nanoparticles has been developed. The model incorporates the governing turbulent equations of overall continuity, momentum, energy and species mass transport to represent the gas phase and the population balance model (PBM) to account for the silica nanoparticles. The model has been validated with experimental data in terms of gas temperature and average particle size. Introduction Silica (SiO2) nanoparticles are used in various industrial applications, such as catalyst, pigments, thin film substrates, electronic and thermal insulators, and humidity sensors [1]. They are also used as additives in plastics and rubbers to improve the mechanical properties of elastomers, and in liquid systems to improve their suspension behavior. These applications rely on the particle morphology, average particle size, particle size distribution, and phase composition [2]. Silica nanoparticles can be synthesized by wet chemical processes such as sol-gel methods and high-temperature processes such as flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). The FSP process provides a unique control of particle size and crystalline structure and it can also produce high-purity, thermally stable particles continuously with minimal further treatments. The sizes of the flame- made particles range from a few to several hundred nanometers, depending on the operating conditions [1]. The synthesis of silica nanoparticles from organic compounds that contain silicon by the FSP process is of interest because it generates no harmful by-products [1, 3]. Several compounds such as tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) can be used to synthesize silica nanoparticles, but most such compounds are expensive. Thus, it is desirable to prepare the precursor compounds from waste materials. In the present study, TEOS and TMOS synthesized from silicon sludge were used as precursors of silica nanoparticles [4]."

"There are several ways to condition lead-based alloy anodes for zinc electrowinning: electrochemical treatment, chemical treatment and physical treatment. Two advantages of physical treatments are their productivity and variety. In this report, physical treatments, including blasting with silica, alumina, steel grit and cut zinc wire, were tested. The laboratory tests confirmed there were differences in the formation of anode scales during electrowinning and in the suppression of lead dissolution from the anodes. With an increase in the surface roughness, the misfit between the PbC""2 and the MnC>2 was mitigated and the anchor effect was promoted; these effects resulted in dense Mn oxide scales on the anode.IntroductionZinc is widely used for hot-dip zinc plating and for die casting alloys. As a supplier of materials, we have endeavored to produce zinc that is economical and contains as little impurity as possible. As a result of our efforts, a technology for consistently providing special high-grade (SHG) zinc has been established. However, as seen in the issuance of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, public awareness of the industrial impact of heavy metals on the environment has been heightened. Increasing efforts to control environmentally sensitive substances will be necessary for our production processes.Electrolytic SHG zinc is produced by electrodeposition in an acidic solution with a Pb-Ag or Pb-Ag-Ca alloy for the anode and an Al alloy for the cathode. Pb alloy anodes are widely used because of their excellent durability; however, they are a source of Pb, which is the main impurity of the product."

This paper gives an overview of the primary copper smelting business during the years of flash Smelting in the light of various projects taking into account the sustainability of copper production. Also the future challenges of copper smelting are addressed with special emphasis on the environment. Flash Smelting connected with either Peirce-Smith converting or Flash Converting offers the most economical and environmentally friendly alternatives for the smelting of normal and lean copper concentrates. For rich copper concentrates the feasibility of Outokumpu Direct Blister Flash smelting is, understandably, beyond compare. When the total investment costs for building a smelter and acid plant are considered, it is clear that Flash Smelting is the more feasible option compared to bath smelting. Reduction of equipment and operating cost is further achieved by the LUREC-process developed by Outokumpu Technology for operating plants with SO2-contents up to 25 % by volume. As an example the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting Furnace (FCF) has been in operation at Kennecott Utah Copper for 10 years and has achieved excellent results both environmentally and production vice. The FCF treats the entire output of the Kennecott Flash Smelting Furnace and has excess converting capacity. Furnace life, initially projected at two to three years, is now projected to be more than 5 years. It is likely the life will be essentially the same as a well-operated Flash Smelting furnace.

While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. "As zinc consumption is gradually increasing all the time in the world, many zinc plants are looking for possible expansions. As the sulphuric acid market as well as the fertilizer market in many areas is saturated, the costs for the roasting-acid plant section of the zinc plant will create problems when making feasibility calculations for possible expansions. For solving the customers' situation, two proven zinc concentrate direct leaching technologies are available. A third one, which is possible, does not have any industrially proven applications in the zinc area.IntroductionTime to time, the zinc plants in the world scrutinize their operations with respect to their cost efficiency, the total zinc recovery and the near-by or far-away consumer markets, especially the for zinc and sulphuric acid. Their preliminary profitability calculations can show that a possible total expansion is not economical, when they are looking to expand the whole roasting/acid plant - leaching - solution purification - electrowinning - casting route, as the possible market price for the sulphuric acid is low or the sulphuric acid market is too far away. Based on these facts, their economical study often indicates that implementing a zinc concentrate direct leaching option could be more favourable. Regarding this situation, several aspects concerning three alternative direct leaching methods will be discussed, of which pressure leaching and the atmospheric leaching processes have several industrial applications in the zinc industry, as the ultrafine grinding - conventional leaching process at present has none. As iron is also dissolved during zinc concentrate direct leaching, iron removal processes generally used in the zinc industry are additionally discussed below."

The lack of suitable means of storing hydrogen for use in the transport sector is generally viewed as a primary showstopper for a hydrogen economy. Recent developments within solid state hydrogen storage in complex hydrides and metal ammines have sparked new hope of a long term solution, but as of now, no materials fulfill all the DoE targets for onboard storage [1]. A detailed physical understanding of the ab-/desorption processes and the role of the essential catalytic additives is an essential prerequisite for the development of new optimized hydrogen storage systems. Here, we illustrate the potential of utilizing the synergy of combining state-of-the-art in theoretical methods and experimental techniques in the analysis and design of materials for hydrogen storage. Recent advances in computer hard- and software has made it possible to treat many of the essential problems in such materials, i.e. structural stability, hydrogen dissociation and diffusion, with high accuracy methods like density functional theory. We rely on such results to guide our synthesis of new materials, and to interpret our experimental results from, e.g. time dependant in situ x-ray diffraction, synchrotron/neutron experiments, and advanced materials testing. Through a continuous feed-back optimization loop between theory and experiments, the obtained nano-scale insight is used to expedite the design and development of novel materials for hydrogen storage.

"1. Introduction The North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. About 50% brown coal reserves have been exploited in the North-Bohemian Basin by the mining company of Severoceske doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) today. The opencast mining of brown coal naturally led to vast landscape damages. Therefore reclamation work has acquired great significance. The specific feature of Severoceske doly, a.s. mining is the fact that the mining has been realized in two geologically absolutely different localities. This fact demands even rather different methods of reclamations. The main problem at Doly Bilina localities is the occurrence of overburden rocks from the series of rocks of coal seams. These rocks are texturally light but large amounts of coal (cca 5 %) and sulphur (cca below 3 %) which makes the soil reaction extremely acid. If they appear on the surface of the dump, they create a phytotoxic area, reclamation of which requires special methods. Rocks from Doly Nastup Tusimice localities are more suitable to reclamation use, but texturally extremely heavy rocks with large fraction of physical clays appear there that can generate a sterile soil area. Their reclamation requirements are completely different from those on Doly Bilina phytotoxic areas. That is the reason of the application of some non – traditional restoration methods. This report briefly summarises the experience in application of fertilizable soils, power plant stabilizer, power plant ash and aerial sowing of charlock. The results are documented by the monitoring of the physical, mineralogical and pedological parameters of rocks in testing areas.2. Properties of Overburden Rocks in Opencast Mines Bilina and Libous The reclamation work methodology in the North Bohemian Basin is above all determined by the properties of overburden rocks which occur in the top horizon of the reclaimed sites. The research of the rocks reclamation properties dealt with four current mining localities in the central part of the basin. It concerned the Bilina and Libous mines. This chapter states the stratigraphic status properties of these sites with respect to reclamation availability. The total status of the area of interest is shown in the figure No. 1."

"Freshwater ornamental fish culture is gaining importance in India and cheaper and nutrient rich live foods such as infusorians, daphnids, copepods and tubifecids are needed urgently. In this regard, adequate research has been conducted to produce such live feeds through recycling of agriculture and animal wastes. By this venture, besides generation of additional income, environment is also kept clean. In order to popularise the technologies relating to production of live foods from wastes and generate employment opportunities, training programmes were conducted for 100 Self Help Group women belonging to Thoothukudi district. The topics of the training included, breeding of ornamental fishes by utilizing the building material wastes, production of live foods through recycling of agricultural and animal wastes. A study on feed back was conducted with 100 respondents represented from different villages. The variables such as socio economic status, economic motivation, usefulness of training and constraints were included in this study. The impact assessment of this training of rural women indicated that 79 percent respondents were in favour of using the training for self employment by utilizing different kinds of wastes. Similar training programmes have also been planned in other parts of Tamilnadu. Introduction Ornamental fish culture is one of the most appropriate sectors to provide opportunities of employment to uplift the status of rural women. To ensure women utilize their full potential in useful and profital activities like freshwater ornamental fish culture, it is necessary to provide training and support for rural women which will ultimately lead to empowerment. Self Help Group Women are being trained routinely in India on the production of live foods for ornamental fish culture through recycling of agricultural and animal wastes. In this regard, training programmes were organized for the Self Help Group Women on freshwater ornamental fish culture. Which is gaining much importance in India. Cheaper and nutrient rich live foods such as infusorians, daphnids, copepods and tubifecids are needed urgently. The techniques of live feed production through recycling of agricultural and animal wastes would not only generate additional income by would also keep the environment clean."

"In the duplex melting process, chromium forms chromium spinels, the study of which will help to exploit the Hongge ores (rich in chromium) in the Panzhihua-Xichang area in China. Mimicked chromium slag was synthesized. The oxidation and decomposition mechanism of the Fe-Cr spinels contained was studied in a sodium roasting process. The effects of temperature, roasting time, amount of soda added and filling reagents were investigated. The leaching-reduction-precipitation-calcination procedure to extract Cr2CO3 was optimized. The results showed that the optimized roasting temperature was 1000~1020°C with a stoichiometric Na2CO3 addition and without any filling reagents. Roasted materials were leached with distilled water and were filtered to obtain a chromium-containing solution, which was adjusted to pH 1.60-1.80. A reducing reagent, NaHSO3, was added in a stoichiometric ratio and the solution was then adjusted to pH 7.25~8.25. Maximum Cr2O3 precipitation was obtained and the precipitate was calcined at 1050°C for 2h to obtain Cr2Ü3 with recovery rate over 96%.IntroductionChromium is widely applied in the metallurgical industry, in refractory materials and in the chemical industry with its particular properties of hardness, wear-resistance, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance [1]. There is no free state of chromium in nature and chromite is the main chromium containing mineral [2], China is poor in chromium resources, despite its large demand, and there are few deposits of high grade of chromite ores except in some regions in Tibet and Xinjiang province [1, 4]. Hongge, one of largest titanomagnetite mines in Panzhihua-Xichang area, is a polymetallic deposit mainly containing iron and titanium; it is also associated with various beneficial elements such as chromium, copper, nickel, etc. [3]. As investigated in Reference 3, the chromium reserves of Hongge ores are so large that it is of great importance to study how to extract the chromium from them."
