In 1999, 1,100 million short tons of coal were produced in the United States, 38 percent from the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains region. This coal has low ash content, and has sulfur content in compliance with Clean Air Act standards (U.S. Statutes at Large, 1990). The National Coal Resource Assessment for this region includes geologic, stratigraphic, palynologic, and geochemical studies and resource calculations for 18 major coal zones in the Powder River, Williston, Green River, Hanna, and Carbon Basins. Calculated resources are 660,000 million short tons. Results of the study are available in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1625-A (Fort Union Coal Assessment Team, 1999) and Open-File Report 99-376 (Flores and others, 1999) in CD-ROM format.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

Pneumatic flotation is rapidly becoming accepted in the main stream of flotation techniques. Imhoflot is a pneumatic flotation process that in recent years has undergone progressive development. It combines short flotation times with excellent selectivity by employing intense pre-aeration and dispersion. K+S GmbH (K+S), Germany, has installed a complete Imhoflot flotation plant at its Sigmundshall plant. The plant treats hard salt consisting of sylvine, halite, anhydrite and kieserite. The reason for selection was that Imhoflot achieves the required grades of plus 60 weight percent K2O whilst offering lower operating costs than conventional flotation installations.

Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. By oxidizing the pyrite matrix through biological leaching of precious metals ores or concentrates, better than 90% recovery of gold and silver is achieved. The paper develops three precipitation processes that eliminates arsenic and all other toxic elements in the resulting liquor after the biological reactors. In addition, the precipitates are highly crystalline and resist resolubilization. The latter must be tested for at least six months by EPA test procedures. The three systems are temperature (must be at least 120°C or higher) lime or limestone. A continuous pilot plant was employed for all three systems and complete recommendations are given to optimize Fe/As molar ratio, reaction kinetics (detention time) pH, temperature, wt % feed solids as well as resultant reagent consumption based upon continuous operation.

Since 1928, nearly 64 km (40 mi) of tunnel have been excavated within the relatively soft Cooper Group, more commonly known as the “Cooper Marl,” for water supply and transporting wastewater in the Charleston area. The majority of these tunnels are unlined and still in operation, while others collapsed shortly after excavating. Tunnel behavior and support requirements vary considerably in this material due to differences in geotechnical properties. The 4.8 km (3 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter Bushy Park Water Tunnel, completed in 1997 for Charleston’s Commissioners of Public Works(CPW), required no ground support. By comparison, the 1.6 km (1 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft)diameter Harbor Wastewater Replacement Tunnel now under construction needs continuous support close to the advancing face, despite being located in the same geological formation. Case histories and general guidelines for designing tunnels in the Cooper Marl are presented.

In September 2004, Gale Norton, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, presented the Manhattan Mine with a U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s 2004 Hardrock Mineral Environmental Award. The Manhattan Mine is a sustainable development showcase. The reclamation accomplishments at this Nevada gold mine demonstrate how modern reclamation techniques can restore an old mining district into an aesthetically pleasing landscape that can support multiple and sustainable uses. In a collaborative effort that relied on substantial community involvement, Round Mountain Gold Corp.(RMGC) has improved the environment and eliminated a number of public hazards associated with old, unsafe mining features. RMGC’s community collaboration, innovative engineering, creative reclamation design and corporate commitment to environmental excellence show what Secretary Norton’s 4 Cs Initiative looks like on the ground and inaction.

More than 111,350 mining and construction industry professionals from throughout the world gathered in Las Vegas, NV, March 19-23 for ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 and IFPE 2002. The triennial event is the Western Hemisphere’s largest equipment show for the quarrying, aggregates, construction and ready-mixed concrete industries. Despite the difficulties in the world economy, ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 attracted more than 2,450 exhibitors from throughout the world. This was an increase from the 1,882 exhibitors that were on hand for the 1999show. And this year’s show occupied more than 180,225m2 (1.94 million sq ft) of exhibit space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This was an increase from the160,900 m2 (1.73-million sq ft) occupied at the 1999event.

The algorithms for the mathematical modeling to predict productivity of underground room-and-pillar mining systems are well known and documented. These algorithms consider the time-varying relationships between mining equipment for a given geometry of operations as well as other constraints. This paper presents WebConSim, a newly developed, Web-based, user-friendly computer simulation tool for the Windows environment. The simulator is easily customized for use by field engineers, planning engineers, and management and will help mine operators plan the optimum mining sequence for different mine geometries and equipment layouts. Program output includes production data and equipment utilization indices, as well as time driven event chains that can be used for virtual reality presentations.

Nodular-graphite cast iron (GGG) is a material similar to steel, and one which exhibits excellent properties, in particular for components exposed to pressure. GGG cast iron has been used in many cases when sinking mine shafts with conventional tubbing. With linings made of cast iron tubbings (the backfill concrete is not integrated into the calculations, and merely serves as bedding) the properties of the cast iron can be made full use of, provided the tubbing is made to the appropriate cross-section. Calculations have shown that better static values can be arrived at when using cross-sections other than those of tubbings made to conventional German standard. The cross-sectional design of the new types of shaft lining made from GGG is to be developed on these lines irrespective of the cast iron structure being only stressed component or its restistance function being combined with the one of concrete. GGG 50 is used for the first time to make the reinforcing inner liner of a main shaft currently sunk in Germany. The physical properties of nodular-graphite cast iron, strength and deformability, suggest that, in the future, its application will not be restricted to shaft support but also in tunneling. New moulding techniques with better three-dimensional modelling resulted in new tubbing designs as installed e.g. for the Hannover underground at present. Shield-driven tunnels have to withstand earth and water pressure, apart from axial machine loads. In this field time is money as well. Therefore easy handling and quick installation are necessary for successful, use. Last but not least, safety is of first-order importance for work in shaft sinking and tunneling. Cast iron lining systems, accordingly, are adequate systems, in particular for excavations underneath water for transport systems and for goods and passengers.

Most innovations in the mining and processing industries have come from the need to produce more for less. Extracting minerals from the ground is expensive. And it is a constant struggle for mine operators to maintain the line between profitability and loss. The same holds for equipment suppliers. To maintain competitiveness, mining equipment manufacturers are building their machines with an eye to what the customer needs. Equipment makers know that if they do not supply machines that are productive and cost efficient, their competitors will. The result has been that the mining industry can now produce more ore with fewer people and more productive equipment. But, for all of the advances made in equipment, mine operators still demand machines that produce even more, are safer for workers and the environment, require less maintenance and can do the job at lower costs. And equipment manufacturers keep responding with larger, smarter and more technologically advanced machines.

Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. "The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. Recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from coal-related resources has recently received significant interest due to supply concerns and their key roles in critical industries and defense-related technologies. An integrated flowsheet consisting of sorting, crushing/grinding, physical separation, acid leaching, solvent extraction, and selective precipitation was designed to achieve continuous production of rare earth products from various coal-related resources such as coarse refuse and acid mine drainage. A pilot plant was constructed that enabled continuous testing of the circuitry on a range of different coal-based feedstocks. Despite achieving significant success in producing high-grade rare earth oxide products, low REE recovery values and high operational costs necessitated a re-evaluation of the process flowsheet. This article describes the circuitry improvements that were based on both laboratory and pilot plant test results. Roasting as a pre-leach treatment was found to significantly improve the leaching rate and overall REE recovery values. After roasting West Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal refuse materials at 600 °C, REE recovery increased by 60 and 40 absolute percentage points, respectively. Rare earth concentration in the pregnant leachate solution (PLS) was increased to around 700 ppm prior to solvent extraction using a staged precipitation method. REEs in the precipitate were re-dissolved, purified, and extracted from the PLS using solvent extraction and selective precipitation to values of around 80%. As a result of the improvements, chemical consumption in the acid leaching and solvent extraction processes was significantly reduced. A techno-economical assessment of the improved flowsheet indicated significant commercialization potential.

Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

Because of its small interburden thickness, concentrated stress distributions, high coal seam metamorphism, and complex geological conditions, mining the five coal seams (Nos. 5, 7, 8, 9 and 12) of Kaiping coalfield is difficult. Kaiping coalfield is located within 80 m in the Kailuan Group. The overburden caving caused by mining the five coals seams was measured using ZTR12 geological penetration radar (GPR) survey combined with borehole observations. The development characteristics of full-cover rock fractures after mining were obtained from the GPR scan, which provides a measurement basis for the control of rock strata in close multiple-seam coal mining. For the first time, it was found that the overburden caving pattern shows a periodic triangular caved characteristic. Furthermore, it is proposed that an upright triangular collapsed rock pile and an inverted triangular area with larger fragments piled up alternately appear in the lower gob. The research results show that the roof structure formed in the gob area can support the key overlying strata, which is beneficial to ensure the integrity and stability of the upper coal seams in multiple-seam mining of close-coal seams.
