The problem of predicting the liberation spectra produced by a closed continuous grinding circuit is of fundamental importance for the design, optimization and control of most operations in an ore dressing plant. The only known approach through which such a calculation can be performed is the population balance model equation. The latest and certainly most significant progress made in this area is the solution proposed by King (1990), which requires one textural parameter that can be measured directly from the ore being studied. The main advantage of King's solution is that it does not require the estimation of hundreds of arbitrary parameters that cannot be independently measured, as required by the existing conventional solutions. However, King's solution relies heavily on a knowledge of the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Milm diagram (Andrews and Mika, 1975). This has never been measured for any ore. The characterization of the internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram requires the measurement of the liberation spectra at several progeny sizes produced by the breakage of monosize, monograde particles at several different grades. In this paper, a procedure based on magnetic fluid fractionation for generating seven narrow-size, narrow-grade samples is presented. Each of these samples was then broken into six progeny size classes in an ultrasonic mill. The one-dimensional liberation spectra of each of the 42 progeny and seven parent particle samples were then measured by image analysis. The measured linear-grade distributions are presented in this paper. The calculation of the correspondent volumetric-grade distributions is discussed.

In recent years, coal mining safety has attained national attention due to several highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with 42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year (National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture,? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment (such as the norms, rules, and common understandings) that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the aggregated results from those five safety culture assessments conducted at underground coal mines. Additionally, some general recommendations for areas where coal mines might focus their attention as part of their attempts to improve safety culture are offered.

INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. Western Greece is a favorable site for exploration and discovery of oil fields. The most important potential source rocks seem to be all the rocks deposited before middle Jurassic under special circumstances, such as reducing conditions, which allowed preservation and maturation of the organic material. In general all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene are not favorite source rocks. The porosity type was studied on fifty samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potential reservoir rocks are the porous Paleogene wackestones-packstones with boring, channel and vuggy porosity type. Finally seal rocks are the impermeable mud-stones and wackestones of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene age. These rocks consist of micrite and whole sells of foraminiferas and the porosity type is mainly intercrystal/interparticle. A Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, conducted on seventy samples using a wet oxidation method, has revealed an extremely low TOC content (less than 0.05 %). This amount is by far less than the minimum organic content amount, required for source rock characterization and characterizes all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene age. Additionally, 18O and 13C stable isotope analysis was contacted and the results are given in d values. All the rocks within the studied time interval have much lower d values than petroleum source rocks. Clay mineral content was studied in almost seventy samples. As is indicated by the clay mineral content the studied rocks have reached up to the Middle Diagenesis and the temperature during diagenesis was rather low.

The goal of hot mix asphalt (HMA) design is optimal material blending to meet Superpave specifications. HMA cost minimization has being modeled as linear programing (LP) (Awuah-Offei et al 2011) and mixed integer LP problems (Brown et al, 2012) and solved with commercial software such as LINDO and CPLEX. Often these software, which are designed to solve general optimization problems, have licenses that cost thousands of dollars. The objective of this study is to develop a novel solution algorithm to the HMA optimization problem presented by Brown et al. (2012), which will negate the need for expensive commercial packages and is specific to this problem. This novel algorithm is based on the branch and bound algorithm for solving mixed integer problems. The algorithm is incorporated into a software package with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The developed algorithm is validated using a real-life HMA problem. Using this solution algorithm will save companies thousands of dollars, otherwise used to purchase software licenses.

In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.

Today the world looks on longwall in the hope that it can produce the next really big break through in productivity, Three correlated machinery developments have made this possible, but it is not only the machinery developments, interesting though these be in themselves, but together with developments in control systems of these machines that longwall now looks so much more attractive, The machinery concerned is, of courses:- 1. The Anderton Shearer Loader - A miner that takes a narrow strip off the, face at rates acceptable to modern mining engineers. 2. An Armoured Flexible, Conveyor which can be kept in close contact with the face and still convey coal as it is snaked over to the faces 3. Powered support systems which can be mechanised and controlled with reliability at any distance from the individual support itself.

Economically important heavy minerals have been studied in the sediments of offshore Alabama and Mississippi. Sandy samples have been collected from a 200 square mile area from Dauphin to Horn Islands. The minerals concentrate in sediments under 10-35 feet of water and may reach 2.4% by weight. The distribution of total heavies is related to the hydrodynamics of offshore Alabama-Mississippi; the greatest concentrations are in the Gulf where the longshore current is diverted from its westerly flow. Preliminary observations indicate that the distribution of individual minerals can be correlated with wave energy, particle size, specific gravity, and morphology of the mineral grains. The coarser, lighter minerals--kyanite, sillimanite and staurolite--are concentrated in relatively low energy areas in the Mississippi Sound and at the end of Dauphin Island in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each is 34.5%, 6.0% and 43.2%, respectively, of the heavy minerals. The smaller, more denseminerals--ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite--are concentrated in high energy areas in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each, respectively, is 42.0%, 5.9%, 9.652, 10.7% and 1.3% of the heavy minerals. On the basis of a minimum concentration of 1% heavy minerals, two areas have been identified and the total amounts of different minerals have been calculated to a depth of 25 feet of sediment. The data are preliminary and in no way indicate recoverable reserves, but they do show that on the order of 20 million tons of heavies exist. These deposits should be termed "indicated resources".

Stimulated by current $0.80 to $1.20 per pound price tag of copper, considerable interest and activity have been generated in the copper mining camps throughout the world, and especially in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico copper belt. Under these economically favorable conditions, many of the marginal oxide-copper deposits, as well as newly discovered prospects, are under scrutiny for possible exploitation. For both the known deposits and new prospects, the big question facing the mine operator is the selection of the best method for processing these economically attractive oxide-copper deposits. Several variations of the hydrometallurgical processes are currently available for treating oxide-copper ores which can be mined by the open-pit method. Basically, these processes involve preparing the ore for application of an acid solution, applying the solution to the ore, and recovery of the metal from the pregnant solution. Dump leaching, heap leaching, vat leaching, agitation leaching and, in more recent times, in situ leaching or solution mining in combination with well established cementation process or the newly developed solvent extraction-electrowinning system have all been employed or have been investigated for the recovery of copper from oxide ores. Of these processes, dump, heap and vat leaching have been successfully practiced for treating oxide-copper ores. Agitation leaching is a relatively newcomer and has been adopted from the experiences of uranium and gold processing. Finally, the inplace leaching technique is the latest process to be suggested for possible treatment of oxide-copper ores.

Sedimentation is used to clarify process effluents or to thicken process slurries. The sedimentation cycle of a suspension is presented as a settling curve. This curve is simply a plot of the height of the interface between the settled suspension and clear liquor versus time. Figure 1 shows a series of graduate cylinders which contain a suspension at various stages in its settling cycle. Cylinder 1 shows the suspension completely mixed at time zero. After a brief period of time (see cylinder 2), the suspension is observed to settle from its initial height Ho to height H1, leaving behind a volume of clear (or turbid) liquor, called the supernatant. The interface between the supernatant and suspension is termed the mud line. It is also possible to distinguish at the bottom of the cylinder a layer of sludge representing solids which have settled from the suspension. The interface between it and the suspension is called the sludge line. The sludge line moves upward in the cylinder.

In the current operational facility, due to the absence of pellet pot facility, a novel technique is developed wherein the pellets with different chemistries prepared in the laboratory are fired in an induration machine by placing them inside the Inconel baskets. In the present work, an attempt is made to optimize the pellet chemistry by developing 2 different flux pellets, viz., low basicity (B2: CaO/ SiO2 = 0.3) pellets and high basicity (B2 = 0.9) pellets, and further the effects of basicity on pellet properties, viz., cold compressive strength, porosity, swelling index, reducibility index, and softening and melting temperature, are studied. It has been found through the multiple operational trials that increasing the basicity of pellets from 0.3 to 0.9 results into improving the pellet strength, reducibility and softening and melting characteristics. Moreover, it is observed that the swelling index of pellets is reduced by adding 2% MgO to both low and high basicity pellets that could be attributed to the formation of high melting point slag in pellets. The operational trial has resulted into producing pellets that exhibit a combination of desired mechanical strength, improved swelling, and reducibility index and possess better softening–melting behavior among all the chemistries studied.

Rock breakage using blasting is one of the important operations of the mining industry. The delay timing decides the initiation sequence of holes in the blasts and is a crucial factor to improve the overall blast performance. Blast-induced ground vibration is an undesired yet unavoidable outcome of blasting. Peak particle velocity (PPV) is commonly used to measure the magnitude of blast-induced ground vibration. Channelization and better utilization of explosive energy delay are provided between blast holes using initiating systems. The use of different initiation systems even on the same site results in a very significant difference in the values of PPV generated. Due to scattered delay timings of pyrotechnic detonators, the scaled distance predictor equations obtained become unreliable. The error/scatter in delay timing leads to overlapping of holes and hence increases in maximum charge per delay. In this paper, an analytical approach has been discussed to measure the overlapping of holes during blasting with initiation systems having inherent cap scatter. The analytical approach will be calculating the probable overlapping of holes due to scatter in delay timing and will help blasting engineers to understand the variation in maximum charge per delay due to pyrotechnic based initiating systems. In this study, a total number of 102 blasts were conducted using different initiation systems at two different opencast coal mine and 221 corresponding blast vibrations events were recorded.

Martin County Coal Corporation's operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company's Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

The ability to track miners and communicate with them while they work in underground coal mines is important during normal daily operations, and critical in emergency conditions. As was evident during recent incidents at underground coal mines worldwide, communication with miners and the knowledge of their location is of great importance for rescue efforts and the preservation of life. Numerous technologies have been developed, adapted, and deployed to meet tracking requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Evaluating the performance of these systems has proven to be difficult for mine operators, system manufacturers, and regulatory agencies. The MINER Act of 2006 requires operators to improve accident preparedness by developing an emergency response plan specific to each mine. With the recent implementation of the provisions of the MINER Act of 2006, all underground coal mines in the United States are subject to the mandates of legislation concerning communication and tracking system installation. As of June 2011, 203 new or revised tracking and/or communication systems had been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), with nearly 50 other systems or revisions in the approval process (MSHA, 2011). At that time, the available approved systems for underground coal mine use included these types: ? Leaky Feeder Communication Systems ? Fixed Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Wireless Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Medium Frequency (MF) Communication Systems ? Communication System Peripherals Other types of tracking systems have since been developed and some manufacturers are seeking approval for use in this application. Some of the new products include Through-the-Earth (TTE) systems and various radio frequency (RF) adaptations. New technologies that are currently being developed and deployed in other industrial applications should also be considered, including acoustical, optical, inertial, and hybrid technologies To date, no uniform method has been employed in the industry to effectively compare and evaluate the performance of installed systems. Neither industry operators nor regulatory agencies can accurately assess the capabilities of installed systems in the continuously changing mine environment. There is need for a uniform evaluation method that provides the ability to assess how different systems and technologies perform in various mining applications, and whether they can satisfy the regulatory requirements.

It was recently proposed to use the pastefill technology as a surface tailings management method. Surface paste is an economic and safe storage method that respects current environmental regulations. There are many problems related to accidents that occur in conventional tailings damps. In this study, the applicability of the surface paste disposal (SPD) method for a Pb-Zn mine in western Turkey was examined. Density was 3.084 and specific surface area was 0.899 m2/g. The mill tailings have very low plasticity and show characteristics of clays and silts in terms of the Unified Soil Classification System. The particle size distribution of the tailings was 39.2% particles finer than 20 µm. The results of this study showed that the physical and chemical properties of mill tailings make them suitable for SPD.

The occurrence of rock falls in underground coal mines entails detrimental effects as fatal or non-fatal injuries on workers, stoppages in mining operations and breakdown of equipment. In this paper, a risk assessment approach on the basis of a decision analysis trend is employed in order to assess the possibility of and manage roof falls. Risk is then assessed by determination of likelihood of occurrence and the cost of consequences (outcomes). In this regard, collected real roof fall data from Tabas and Kerman coal regions comprising of several underground coal mines are used. It is concluded that the annual accidents due to the roof falls occurrence in the all investigated mines are so high that it is economically feasible to improve the support systems and to implement a suitable educational program as well as an accurate supervision and other elements of safety management.

Mine seismicity is influenced by the mechanical properties of both near-seam rocks and overburden and the prudent selection of mining methods and mine layout designs. Using finite-difference modeling, experience in many U.S. mines and measurements of the pressure arch width, the author has reviewed the engineering design factors that control seismicity in room-and-pillar retreat operations for stiff stratigraphic conditions in deep western U.S. mines. By back analyzing the overburden response in now understood to have been inadequately designed historic room-and-pillar mine, the overburden collapse mechanism is addressed as well as the need for improvements in designs including panel and barrier pillar widths, and sequence of retreat.

Chemical mining may be defined as the in-place extraction of metal values from ores located within the confines of a mine (that is, broken or fractured ore, stope fill, caved material, or ores in permeable zones) or ores located in dumps, prepared ore heaps, or tailing ponds. The term solution mining has, in general, been used to mean the in-place dissolution of water-soluble mineral salts with leach solutions. Chemical mining is presently in its embryonic stage. Basic research needs to be done to understand the influence of physical and chemical factors in chemical mining, and applied research needs to be done on both a small and a large scale to develop practical techniques of field practice. The areas of research include the following: (1) Leaching chemistry, the influence of physical, chemical, and biological factors in in-place leaching (2) Hydrodynamics of chemical mining systems (3) The development of new, as well as old, leaching agents for use under chemical mining leach conditions (4) The development of new means of contacting fine and coarse materials (with solutions) under static leach conditions (5) The development of new processes for generating and regenerating chemical mining leach solutions (6) The development of metal recovery processes

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) systemin a blowing face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. This study evaluates the roof bolter machine CAC while operating in an exhausting face ventilation system. This study considers two similar locations to allow comparison with the previous blowing face ventilation (Zheng et al., Min Metal Explor 36(6):1115–1126, (2019)) study: (1) a roof bolter machine bolting the roof at 20 ft (6.1 m) from the face and (2) a roof bolting machine bolting at 4 ft (1.2 m) from the face. The environment introduces 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust to represent the roof boltingmachine operating downstreamof the continuous miner. However, the exhausting face ventilation uses an exhaust curtain with 9000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air. Two roof bolter machine working positions are simulated with the use of dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8%. When the roof bolter machine operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection since the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5%. Additional CAC airflows of 350 cfm(0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm(0.21 m3/s) were evaluated and demonstrated that dust reductions increased to 59.7% (350 cfm) and 72.0% (450 cfm) for the worst location where the roof bolter operators located.
